Open Thread

For general discussion and debate. Possible discussion point: Chelsea Clinton gets asked about Monica Lewinsky...again (video embedded right which, due to resizing, might need some horizontal and vertical bar scrolling to properly center).

Has this gotten out of control? Should she be asked such questions? Regardless of her age, should she have to answer for her father's behavior? Or, as she's involved in the campaign, and is an adult, is this fair game?

Finally, Allah brings up an interesting twist: "Are people suddenly feeling frisky about this subject because even the left sort of hates Hillary now? There’s no one left, besides her own persona-non-grata supporters, to take the righteously angry line on Chelsea’s behalf here."

What say you, NewsBusters?

NBers

NBers,

I wanted to respond first: I think this is disgraceful, and very much agree with Allah's suggestion that this is a function of folks turning on the Clintons for their deplorable behavior during this campaign.

Now, I am certainly pleased that the nation is turning on Bill and Hill. However, even though the daughter is campaigning for her mother, this is not the kind of crap she should have to answer for. JMHO. ns

Agreed, N.

Although Chelsea is out on the trail for her mum, she shouldn't have to comment on Monica.  It's a gross, and crass question.  Too bad the press is too scared to ask HILLARY....chickens!  That is where this particular question should be directed.

The first clip I saw of Chelsea responding to this question was spot-on...."none of your business".  However, she reminded me so totally of her mother (even to the sound of her voice) that I find Chelsea to be demon-spawn....she can't help it...the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

Having said that....were the Cirque de Soleil tix worth the price of admission, Noel?

Oh...and wazzup w/the Open thread at this time of night?

Blonde

Blonde,

Well, I was the guest of an insurance wholesaler. So, I didn't pay. Would I? $165? I don't know. I've paid $100 for ballet and opera tickets. Obviously, if I was paying, my wife would be with me, which means $330. Plus dinner. $500 evening. I've done those before.

That said, it was the greatest thing I've ever seen in a theatre. Honestly. It was mesmerizing, enthralling, and way beyond my expectations. I want to see it again. Will I pay that much? Sure. It was absolutely fantastic.

As for Open Thread so early, I thought I'd make up for how late today's was. Also, I've been out of the office for two days, and may not have a lot of time tomorrow morning. ns

Thx, NS

I've always been enthralled by C du S on the telly...and have given serious thought to seeing it live...but the cost kind of set me back a bit.

Some things are great on TV...but unbelievable in person...Michael Flatley comes to mind.  So, upon your recommendation...I may just have to do this the next time it comes to town (or I go to Vegas...next February, sheesh!).

Are you enjoying the basketball?  I'm not...for obvious reasons.  But I'm still enjoying wearing my redneck belt buckle with TWO different national championship shaped balls on it.   LOL.  Serioulsy waiting for football season.

hey Blonde, Nice to hear

hey Blonde,

Nice to hear from you....I am with you and Noel, I don't think Chelsea should have to answer about Monica, but her mother and father should.

Speaking of C du S, I just found out my nephew (who performs in Vegas) has just gotten a gig to travel to London to perform in C du S. My nephew was the back up for Rick Springfield a few years ago is some show (I don't follow the shows in Vegas). He is a pretty talented kid. Just a little proud!

msh,

That is so totally cool!

Noel,

The first time this happened, I must confess that I kind of felt that if Chelsea wanted to play with the "grown-ups" and campaign for her mother, then she should be willing to play by grown-up rules and grow a spine in these situations.

However, I have since changed my opinion in that she sould not be held to account for the deplorable actions of her father, as they really have nothing to do with either Chelsea, or her mother's run for the White House.

After all, she was only a mere child during the time her father was president.

Theme for Election '08: I want my mommy!

What's interesting...

Is that her father's not being asked these questions. Which makes it look unfair. Which makes the questions look both tasteless and possibly-planted, given the history of this campaign so-far...And as-usual we're faced with massive interest in the sex scandal and 0 interest in the China/$/technology scandal. It's a '90s tradition.

Head of Interns

That's right, when is someone going to ask Bill what assurances the American people can expect in regards to his behavoir should he return to the White House as spouse.

I heard he was personally

I heard he was personally interviewing the under secretaries.

Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark.

Undersecretaries? Under

Undersecretaries? Under what??? LOL

OK, seriously, I agree with Blonde above, I thought it was a lousy
question but Chelsea's attitude completely turned me off. There are
better ways of saying "it's none of your business." She could have said
that's a personal family matter, and it should stay that way, for
instance. But she apparently has her mother's imperious attitude.

I would have preferred it if someone asked her if her mother was proud of her working for a hedge fund. LOL

Good grief, sarc...

Good grief, sarc...Clinton's personal behavior was deplorable, but he has been deposed about it, given grand jury testimony about it, impeached over it, and had volumes written about it.  But it's now important to ask Clinton even more questions about it?

Jer

Rereading your post, I may have misinterpreted your point.  Is it that Clinton's past sexual indiscretions are no longer of significant relevance--particularly when compared to the China/techology transfer matter?

Yes, I was always into the China-tech thing...

Even though I cracked BJ jokes with the best of 'em, having initially heard the news on the Stern show. The China stuff seemed a lot more impeachable, and the sex stuff risked a lot more, politically. My theory then and now was that both sides wanted us to focus on sex because both sides had/have something to hide WRT China-criminality (much like their bipartisan cocaine-Contra criminality, come to think of it, and with the same deafening silence from the media too!). But regardless of that, why bother the girl, especially when Bill's getting off free? I'm still thinking she needs larger goons! ;)
JMR

what exactly are the

what exactly are the questions they are asking her anyway? This is supposed to be the land of free speech and thought and questions and discussion, etc, etc - I don't really see a problem with asking anyone about anything - as long as the questioner can brace for impact - but I still need some more coffee and may change my mind...

Read above

They're asking (or maybe planting, nobody's sure anymore) questions about her Dad's affair with Monica. It's not a free speech issue, they can say anything, but it's a taste issue no matter who's asking.

And nobody wants to talk about the actual instances of bipartisan criminality I mentioned where the news media deliberately dropped the ball (Contra-cocaine & China-tech). This is because, IMO, they're both bipartisan scandals -- hence the media noncoverage & the continual emphasis on sex/anything-else to cloak the real scandals.

sarc,

And as-usual we're faced with massive interest in the sex scandal and 0 interest in the China/$/technology scandal

Not to mention the nuke technology that Clinton handed over to the Iranians and Norks as well.

To me, those two items, plus the one you point out, were his three most egregious transgressions.

Oh, and there was that little kidnaping operation that that hideous AG Janet Reno pulled off for her hero Fidel, plus the wholesale murder of the Branch Dividians, plus the killing, I'm sorry, the murder of Randy Weaver's wife, plus.....

Theme for Election '08: I want my mommy!

Noel!

I luv ya, man, but I have to say that if Chelsea wants to play, she gets what she gets. That was MY oval office, My president in My country and she was My first daughter.

I'm usually on the Noel S. bandwagon, but this time I have to say that they should go after Chelsea with both guns a-blazin'.

I'm just sayin' is all...

I understand this POV, but...

Isn't it odd that they're going after the girl, who was a victim, rather than giving any heat whatsoever to the perp himself?? I don't get it, unless as I said before* these are planted questions. It's like Chelsea's SS goons aren't as scary or something...
JMR

* Note the resulting jokes are all about the one subject, and none about the other (admittedly more-serious) issue...

A corruption-story the TV media will-not cover.

I'm with ya sarcasmo,

But the Clintons perfectly understand the realm they are operating in...

Billyboy cannot stand up there and say,"That's my personal bidness , if you don't mind."

Therefore if it is okay for mommy and daddy to continue abusing their child by consistently putting her in harm's way, well, she gets what she gets. She is almost 30 years old now, so, to me, she must want to be part of the machine.

Chelsea IN 2016?

I just wish they'd pick on the perp more

And these continued tasteless questions won't get answers. I'd rather them ask her about Loral, or BCCI, or the pardons at the end. But even all those aren't about Chelsea. I think she's in this because she loves her mom and appreciates the sweet & lucrative sinecure her pedigree got her, so I don't sense that kind of political ambition in Chelsea's future.

Chelsea should answer about violations of the Constitution

It seems like the left performed a magic trick with Pres Clinton. They reduced the Lewinsky scandal to an affair. Let's not forget that Bill committed perjury and obstruction of justice. I think if Chelsea is campaigning for her mother she should answer whether someone who thinks its OK for the chief executive of the law to perjure himself and commit crimes against the Constitution should be pres herself. Why does this alway turn into an issue about an affair? Chelsea shouldn't have to answer about the affair she should answer as to whether it's OK to violate the pres'l oath of office.

My feelings about this

My feelings about this are...she puts herself out there in the public forum..she should expect anything from anybody out there in the public forum with questions... simple as that.

She isn't a child anymore, I assume she knows this may happen already, her parents sure as heck do....Hillary has stated publicly that they have taught her early on to be ready for anything from the msm that she may hear about her parents...

So it is what it is.

Deal with it...which she has.

"Never murder your opponent when he is committing suicide." ~ W. Churchill

Here's a thought...If

Here's a thought...If Chelsea doesn't want to be subjected to such questioning, perhaps she should consider not allowing herself to be used so often as a convenient political prop by her opportunist parents.  What Chelsea has to say about the future of the country is really of no interest nor value to anyone, but she's made herself a useful tool for the Clinton campaign whenever they want to play the self-righteous victim role (apparently this role is the gift that keeps on giving...ordinarily you would have thought they'd have dried up that well long ago for all the trips they've taken to it).  Perhaps she's been asked about the Lewinsky thing so many times because it's the only subject about which she could possibly have anything interesting to say.  Or perhaps...no the Clintons wouldn't do this, that would be beneath them, wouldn't it...they hired plants to "harass" Chelsea at these town hall Q&As.  No one could be that sleazy, could they?

fitz

Of course not...no one could possibly be that sleazy (great word, BTW....fits Hillary to a "T").

I hope this latest "lying/cheating" Hillary story makes it to cable tomorrow morning.  I am so going to enjoy the monster meltdown.

Excellent stuff.

Why fitz...whatever do you

Why fitz...whatever do you mean? Certainly no parent would ever use their own child for the pity factor for voting...especially not the perfect non-political anything to win parents like the Clintons...say it isn't so!

"Never murder your opponent when he is committing suicide." ~ W. Churchill

You can bet your sweet bippy!

The Clintonista political machine is that sleazy.  Every move they make is planned well ahead of time.  If you think for one second that they aren't playing up the sympathy card on Chelsea, you've been duped like the rest of the people who vote for Billary.  Chelsea is a very intelligent woman, and she knew and was advised going in that people would be throwing this question out to her.  They will not attack Hill and Bill because their armor is too thick and their retaliation to sharp.  Chelsea, however, was new territory, and they are probing the perimiters of her tolerance.  How long do you think before she uses the bony finger point like her father does?

Stultus est sicut stultus facit

perhaps she should consider

perhaps she should consider not allowing herself to be used so often as a convenient political prop by her opportunist parents.

Whoa, fitz....are you saying she's being "pimped out"????? LOL

And then make her look like a victim too????

Great sympathy play, IMO

Last I saw Jesse "The Body"

Last I saw Jesse "The Body" Ventura, he was spinning heavily against the Gray Davis Recall (I think he was jealous of the Last Action Zero).  It was at that point that he officially changed from a somewhat refreshing curiosity to an irritating, over-indulged, sanctimonious, psuedo-know-it-all blowhard.  He got a touch of Beltway notoriety and all of a sudden he seemed to forget that his contemporaries were Greg "The Hammer" Valentine and Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka.  Though after seeing some recent video of the "great man", I think he might want to look up his old friend Brutus "The Barber" Beefcake.

there's a good reason he's

there's a good reason he's not on TV much anymore - not pretty...

it's probably the steroids

and he spent so much time on Leno and Lettermen he never really got a chance to screw up the government:)

it was kinda amazing how little of a difference he really made

but keep it growing fer sure - now its just fun to see how big it can get

He said the reason he wasn't on TV

Was a contract for a series they never ran with MSNBC. Surprisingly, these contracts often go on paying people even though they're not working and the show never made the air, so I believe he could be telling the truth. I'd STFU and stay off TV for that kind of scratch, too.

pain. He said instead of Jesse the Body he was calling himself Jesse

crybaby when he didn't get his way, or anyone with such a thin skin
when it came to criticism.  One of the local radio guys used to
call him Governor Turnbuckle"   and that annoyed the hell out
him (lack of respect.) LOL

He loved the national press because they drooled all over him (they
started suggesting, as soon as he was elected governor in '98 that he
should run for Pres in 2000) and always had time for them, but hated
the local press and would avoid them because they didn't adore him. He
gave them lapel ID's that said "Media Jackal"...

When he didn't get the budget he wanted, he closed the governor's house
and laid off the staff to make the point that the state couldn't afford
it....

He was a real piece of work.

I listened for 10 seconds....

...and switched the channel after he questioned the need for non-U.S. citizens to have any sort of paperwork or permission to come into the U.S. because after all, that's exactly what those evil Europeans did four hundred years ago.

What goes around...

When I think of the number of MSM passes the Clinton's got before and during their occupation of the White House I'm not bothered by any question Chelsea has to duck. The Clinton's have sent their little lamb to do a job the Clinton wolf pack normally handles. They made the decision, if their kid isn't tough enough to deal with stuff like this she needs to get out.

The media remind me of a pack of hungry hyenas slowly turning on a wounded but still dangerous leader of the pack.

Actually I feel a little sorry for Chelsea. Her parents are both cretins, and the media is so frightened of them that the only one who ends up getting asked the questions we would all like answers to is her. I guess she could just stay home though, or can she?

The democrats are proving to be like an untrained Pitbull dog. One minute they are licking their owners (the Clintons) a$$ and the next minute they are biting it. The past 14 months with the democrats in charge of congress has been a true circus even while they destroy the economy. Anyone notice what has changed in 14 months, the least not being the doubling of oil prices which is taking a lot of stuff through the roof with it. That's what we get when tax and tax democrats threaten industry with massive tax increases. Come on democrats, elect a few more of the fools so they can destroy everything you have. No jobs, no workers = no welfare money available for you.

The adjective for "lair" is pseudes. So should we refer to her as Pseutes Clinton or Pseudes Clinton?

pedophiles in charge of elementary schools

Is the media out of control? …Duh!! That is why we are here.

And Yes, Chelse being questioned about her father’s behavior is a perfect example.

PawpawN’s post above “We're all missing the point!” makes a very important point. But let’s be clear about this: What PawpawN identifies is a very important consequence of the media’s complete abdication of responsibility, not the other way around. I really get angry when total media jerks – we have to be nice on this web site – justify what they do by saying that “this is what the Public demands.”

The media, especially its executives and let us be sure to include the School of Journalism at Columbia, are not just irresponsible, they are pernicious. It is not much different from pedophiles being in charge of elementary schools

I guess I just don't see

I guess I just don't see the relevance in asking Chelsea.

I do, if the question came

I do, if the question came from the Clintons themselves.

Frankly, what is the

Frankly, what is the relevance of her appearance anywhere but to face that question?  Besides the fact that she's been the heavily sheltered daughter of a former President, she's gone from an elitist (notice I didn't say "elite") college to some ceremonial job with a Wall Street hedge fund.  Mind you, her upbringing and employment are perfectly acceptable...congratulations to her.  However, as such, Chelsea really has nothing worthwhile to contribute to the debate...she has no experience nor aptitude to discuss the issues she's championing on her mother's behalf.  She has never run for political office and she has never had to work a day in her life.  She is completely out-of-touch with the workings of this country.  In short, she's the Paris Hilton of politics: famous for being famous.  But she gets to lecture us on the war, the economy and socialized medicine?  Based on what?  She has no purpose in this debate other than to serve as a political prop for her mother's ambitions.  She has nothing relevant or of any substance to say...she repeats campaign talking points ad nauseum and is permitted to dictate what questions are off limits.  Sorry, politics is a contact sport...and if you insist on sticking your neck out as an advocate, you open yourself up to scrutiny from those you are lecturing.

You don't consider Stanford

You don't consider Stanford one of the top schools in the nation? I'd imagine graduating from there makes a job at a hedge fund less than "ceremonial."

She has a ceremonial job at

She has a ceremonial job at a hedge fund because she's the daughter of Bill and Hillary Clinton...not because she graduated from Stanford.

I have no doubt that being

I have no doubt that being Chelsea Clinton helped her get the job. But you're assuming she doesn't do any real work.

Well, is she at work or on

Well, is she at work or on the campaign trail?  I think it's a pretty accurate assumption under the circumstances.

Come on. You're just looking

Come on. You're just looking for things to rag on her about. Yeah, she's not at work RIGHT NOW. When she is at work, you have no idea how much she works, how hard, what she contributes. You just assume she doesn't do anything.

When she is at work, you

When she is at work, you have no idea how much she works, how hard, what she contributes.

And I suppose you do?  Frankly, it doesn't matter whether or not she works hard...she's there because her employers believe her name adds value to their enterprise.  As long as she doesn't break anything, they come out ahead.

So you don't think she does

So you don't think she does any work at all, isn't really smart enough to work at a hedge fund, just sits around doing her nails all day.

That's rational.

First of all, I have no idea

First of all, I have no idea how smart she is (neither do you)...that's part of the issue with her.  She's been wrapped in cotton wool all these years, so it's difficult to make any accurate observation of her credentials.  I'm saying it doesn't make a difference what she "does".  She serves her primary purpose simply by being associated with the company.  If she does anything, it's incidental to her main function of providing "credibility" by her mere presence.  It's not that difficult a concept, bal.

Fitz, Wrapped in cotton

Fitz,

Wrapped in cotton wool?

Do you generally assess the credentials of other people's children so vehemently?  Weird.

You're talking out of your rear my man.  You literally have no clue as to her work with the company, her work at college, or her work in her regular life.  This entire thread was nothing more than you making things up and whining about some girl you know nothing about.  Pathetic.

Leon, Do you really want

Leon,

Do you really want this fight?  You're already getting your a** handed to you by several others in this thread, and were I you, I would concern myself with damage limitation up the thread before picking a new fight with someone else.  But I'm in a giving mood, so I'll indulge you.

It's interesting that you'd refer to a 28-year-old Stanford graduate and Wall Street employee as "some girl" and "other people's children"...then have the nerve to suggest that I'm talking out of my rear.  Perhaps you need a refresher course at the local sensitivity training facility, I think your attitude towards women is outdated.  I mean, here you are, inadvertantly proving my point that Chelsea Clinton has been elevated beyond her capabilities and injected into a campaign as a prop to score sympathy points with base voters, and you're calling me pathetic.

The fact of the matter is that Chelsea Clinton's academic and employment records are irrelevant to her worth to the Hillary Clinton Presidential Campaign.  She could be CEO of Wal-Mart or an unpaid campaign staffer and she'd be of the same use to the Clinton campaign that she is now...because her value is in her identity.  Her function within the campaign is to be trotted out as a symbol of Clinton virtue (something the campaign itself lacks in abundance)...as if to suggest, "hey, you may think that Bill and Hillary Clinton are cold, calculating, self-absorbed political animals...but could cold, calculating, self-absorbed political animals produce such a graceful, polite, well-spoken Stanford graduate?...your perceptions of the Clintons are all wrong and should be turned upside-down".  But Chelsea cannot stand as an unassailable symbol of Clinton virtue if she's left open to scrutiny from those who believe her standing is at least partly an act.  If she's challenged and she comes out looking less than the image her family has projected her to be, it further erodes the campaign's credibility.  So, she must be seen to be above the fray...thus the "cotton wool" reference.

The problem is that the campaign has used her as a weapon once too often.  She's starting to talk about issues of policy, economics, the war, health care.  She's starting to make charges of other administrations.  In short, she is using a platform that is beyond even your average 28-year-old Stanford graduate and Wall Street employee...and with such a freedom comes great responsibility...namely encounter some uncomfortable questions from time-to-time, speak to a 9-year-old "journalist" every so often and quit condescending to the victims of her father's dalliances (the American People) by getting on a high horse and insisting that this was simply a private matter that only affected the Clintons.

Let me know how the sensitivity training goes.

Fitz, Wow, that post was

Fitz,

Wow, that post was amazingly boring.

Here's your argument:

she's there because her employers believe her name adds value to their enterprise.

My word choice aside, the fact of the matter is you have no clue.  You're simply speculating which in
