For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: Spitzer supposedly will resign today (paragraph break removed):
Gov. Eliot Spitzer has decided to resign and began notifying top state officials of his decision just after 9 a.m., The Post has learned. Word began circulating of his decision in state political circles just minutes ago, which came after what one source called "an agonizing night," as the governor's wife, Silda Wall Spitzer, and the governor's lawyers went over a possible plea deal offered by federal prosecutors, sources told The Post.
What might this plea deal involve? Would he be resigning so quickly if this wasn't an election year? Do you think he's gotten pressure from the Democrat Party to hastily quit so that this issue can get off radar screens before folks start connecting the dots between him and Hillary? Will press members ever divulge to the public that he was a Democrat?

Or just a way to help him and not have it look like a "political" favor. Even if his testimony is useless, it gives them a better reason to let him off the hook.
Seems like almost anything is possible at this point. And it could get REAL interesting before it's all over.

March 12, 2008 - 10:42 ET by Indiana JoeDems closing ranks around a "troubled" cohort shouldn't be a surprise, I should think.
I haven't heard any Dems calling for him to step down, or defending him, for that matter. I think Dersh may have just had a "knee-jerk" response, rushing to defend any Dem in trouble. But I would think that, on reflection, the Party would want to get this off the front pages and "move on" as quickly as possible.

March 12, 2008 - 10:51 ET by sarcasmoThis kind of sexual hypocrite story is pure political poison. It's gotten far more media than his trooper shenanigans, which should have spelled the end of his political career IMO. I think Dershowitz may be reacting emotionally because this is his former student/employee, but he must know this scandal is deadly for the Democrats if it continues, which it will if Spitzer doesn't go today.

March 12, 2008 - 19:57 ET by Del DolemonteThe best working bass player in rock music today is a guy hardly anyone has ever heard of, fellow by the name of Joey Spampinato, co-founder of rock musician cult fave band NRBQ, whose fans include Sir Paul McCartney, REM, Los Lobos, Elvis Costello, Bonnie Raitt, and Homer Simpson (the Q was the house band on "The Simpsons" for several years and even appeared in animated form on the episode where Marge was kidnapped by a motorcycle gang). They have been on hiatus for a few years, but did 2 reunion shows last year and also played at "Simpsons" executive producer Mike Scully's 50th birthday party.
In fact, Joey was a finalist to replace Bill Wyman in the Rolling Stones a few years back-he was the choice of Keef Richards, who hired him to play bass for the Chuck Berry "Hail! Hail! Rock and Roll" Movie. Mick favored another bass player, but both of them deferred to Stones drummer Charlie Watts, who eventually shot both Keef and Mick down when he picked the third, totally different winner (Daryl Jones?)

Rendell on Call Girls
March 12, 2008 - 12:02 ET by Hero SquadI heard this on the radio yesterday... a quote from Ed Rendell concerning Eliot Spitzer:
First, I thought it was real decent of him to disparage 49 other governors in his comments regarding Spitzer.
Second, I now would like to know where he places himself on that list of the most likely governors to hire the services of a call girl.
Third... seriously, you'd rank Sara Palin (Alaska), Janet Napolitano (Arizona), Jodi Rell (Connecticut), Ruth Ann Minner (Delaware), Linda Lingle (Hawaii), Kathleen Sebelius (Kansas), Jennifer Granholm (Michigan), and Christine Gregoire (Washington) as more likely to use the services of a call girl than Eliot Spitzer?
And finally, who would he rank as the #1 most likely governor to enlist the services of a call girl.

Why Mississippi shows us a Republican will win in '08...
March 12, 2008 - 11:44 ET by vrwc13Mississippi results:
BHO wins Blacks 91 to 9
HRC wins Whites 72 to 21
BHO wins Males 61 to 38
BHO wins females 58 to 39
So a Republican White Male (RWM) against BHO where Whites out-number Blacks nationally 74 % to 12% - RWM wins.
A Republican White Male (RWM) against HRC where nationally its about 50/50 male/female, but Mississippi voted 60/40 - RWM wins.
Debate's over?

March 12, 2008 - 11:57 ET by ahusserI am kinda worried though. Right now it looks like Jimmy Carter Redux. I checked the Iowa Electronic Markets which have Dems 57% to Repubs 43% for President. It just depends on which reality you decide to prescribe to:
March 12, 2008 - 12:13 ET by vrwc13It just depends on which reality you decide to prescribe to:
Party: Dems 72 mil, Reps 55 mil, Ind 42 mil
Race: Whites 74%, Blacks 12%
Male/female: 50/50
In a race where there are two white males; party, platform, position (lib to conservative) would rule
In a race where one party has either a woman or a black male; race and gender will probably rise up the scale as a factor.
For BHO; it's a tough 74% to 12%
For HRC; a lot of woman do not like her, and there are probably a lot of Archie Bunker dems out there who won't vote for her either.

They think McCain acts like a Democrat.

In reference to my comment
March 12, 2008 - 13:35 ET by ahusserIn reference to my comment above. The IEM is based at the University of Iowa so I considered the numbers suspect because, after all, the markets, a long standing project of the business school, were located on a college campus. I saw that many more dollars were flowing into buying Democrats than Republicans (buying in essence shares of Dem for Prez or Repub for prez that's how the IEM works). The theory being that these markets are more accurate with less margin for error than polls because people are risking real money. The Brit bookie odds are a little skewed because the vigorish is built into the odds given but will adjust based on money flows. After all Britain is pretty much a socialist country so I also considered these odds a little suspect. But again the theory being that these odds are more accurate than polls for the reasons given above. I felt this other perspective is interesting and informative.
