Appearing on the March 5 "Your World" program with guest host Brenda Buttner, MRC Director of Media Analysis and NewsBusters Senior Editor Tim Graham lambasted the mainstream media for its gauzy treatment of Democratic frontrunner Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.):
It's really sad that at this point in the presidential campaign, when we're in a situation where they are saying now that the math is impossible for Hillary Clinton to get the Democratic nomination, that now suddenly the media is going to try to vet Barack Obama's record. And really, obviously, the media itself are saying, 'Well, obviously the Saturday Night Live skit had something to do with this.'
They're taking their cues on when to be a professional journalist based on comedy sketches?!
Video (2:55): Windows Media (10.7 MB), plus MP3 audio (1.31 MB)
Buttner then asked Graham if he was "really surprised by this" given that both the mainstream media and Sen. Obama are "pretty liberal." Replied Graham:
No, but I think that a lot of people would expect, there's a lot of people who are not conservatives who really trust the media to give them the straight scoop. There's lots of moderate and independent voters that watch these newscasts, and they ought to try to do a better job of just telling people who this man is. And they've really failed to do that up to this point. And, you know, we ought to expect better of them than what we're actually getting.

Great job, as usual
March 5, 2008 - 21:10 ET by motherbeltGreat job, as usual, for Tim.
Who was that reporterette???? Holy Cow! I marvel at Tim's ability to keep a straight face!
I can't believe she actually said (paraphrasing) Well, the media's pretty liberal, and Obama's liberal; do you expect them to be rough on him? as it that were a perfectly legitimate explanation!
That justifies their powder-puff treatment of him? That they agree with him???? I would have snapped and said, Of course!! I expect them to do their job!!
And at the end, when while he was talking, she could be heard going "hmm" and "well.." as if trying to interrupt him. Then she started "packing up", straightening and blocking her papers, as if to say We're done here...OK, whatever.....
Talk about rude and dismissive...Tim deserves a medal for maintaining his good manners!

March 5, 2008 - 21:20 ET by Chris Normanmb,
Yeah, I caught "the ol' rapid dismissal" while Tim was saying that after the primaries, the media would probably go back to boosting Obama instead of covering him (I was watching this in a store while running an errand). Brenda Butner has one of those stock shows on Fox on Saturday mornings. I don't know where she stands politically. Neil Cavuto, though, is sorely missed when he's off. I think Tim is getting better and better on these shows.
Brenda Buttner is one woman
March 5, 2008 - 21:21 ET by bigtimerBrenda Buttner is one woman I cannot listen to long...it is her voice that does it for me...plus she is always so loud when projecting, reminds me of someone...hmmmm....
I'll have to catch the dideo later and comment about this all...one thing is sure, Tim did a good job, I don't know how some people have the patience, thank goodness they do.

Right, Chris, it was obvious she didn't want him saying that...
Well, at least now I know who she is. She should stick to doing stock reports.

March 5, 2008 - 21:58 ET by Chris Normanmb,
It's bad enough when O'Reilly does it, but when an anchor from a business brawl show (Bulls and Bears) starts doing it, well, grrrrrr. I'm more interested in what some of the guests have to say than them. Tim was making a great point when she started talking over him. O'Reilly says it's his job to "keep his guests 'focused'", I say it's because he's in love with himself and thinks we want to hear more from him than the guests. I say he's wrong.

drillanwr - that's just toooo good. When do you suppose David Gregory or Matt Lauuuuerrr will be reporting on this? Or any MSM outlet? Man, that's good stuff. Kind of like the Che flag in the Obama office - no problem and no story if you're an MSM'er.
Nothing to see here ...

Saw this reported by AP
March 5, 2008 - 23:46 ET by Oscar GoldmanHard to believe, but I found an AP story on this on Yahoo. The only difference is that the AP story waited until the end to mention the reference to Obama by US "contacts" communicating with rebels and captioned the story about Chavez's ties to FARC. Seems to me the overriding issue here is should we be concerned about a Presidential candidate being endorsed by Marxist terrorists? YES! Who are these contacts and what is their connection with those at the controls behind Obama?
Any doubts ...
March 6, 2008 - 01:10 ET by drillanwrIf, say, McCain's name had been the one on the FARC computer if the MSM would be damning the torpedoes, full speed ahead on this ...
Hell, Pelosi, Reid, Waxman and Co. would have formed an investigation committee and holding hearings by now.
I'm just sayin' ...

Translation from MSM-speak
March 5, 2008 - 22:59 ET by sherlock1... there's a lot of people who are not conservatives who really trust the media to give them the straight scoop. There's lots of moderate and independent voters that watch these newscasts, and they ought to try to do a better job of just telling people who this man is.
Translation: we don't owe the conservatives a damn thing when it comes to honesty, because they're just inbreds anyway, and we don't care if they watch our shows or not. But our own people, the good people, we shouldn't keep them in the dark, because they actually have the power of cognition, so we should let them use it a little bit... as long as they don't abuse it!
sherlock, what are you
March 5, 2008 - 23:37 ET by motherbeltsherlock, what are you talking about? Why would Tim Graham be saying he doesn't owe conservatives honesty or anything else?
Are you confusing who said what?
Here's another...
March 5, 2008 - 23:27 ET by Oscar GoldmanThe Wall Street Journal Opinion section had an excellent commentary that highlighted not only Senator Obama's reckless economic rhetoric, but also his propensity to "say anything to get elected." Change? Sounds to me like the same old story with a shiny new face.

Here are the first two paragraphs:
I am willing to guess that other mainstream broadcast and print media will pass on taking issue with this obvious display of double speak and rhetoric. Is there any better example of how Obama orates endless rhetoric and platitudes? Think the voters in Ohio will feel duped if their candidate of hope were elected and offered nothing but a dream only to be followed by a nightmare?

It's true they've been soft on Obama
March 6, 2008 - 08:13 ET by sarcasmoBut I think they've also been a bit soft on Hillary on the tax return issue, too, even though that's destined to be a big part of McCain's talking points if she's the candidate & political junkies left and right all know it. She didn't get $5 million to loan herself by waving a magic wand, and inquiring minds want to know if this election's $5 million resulted from another "expert" cattle-futures trade...

While I agree that she should make the tax records public, I doubt there will be anything fishy about that money in them.
You might be right
March 6, 2008 - 08:46 ET by sarcasmoBut if so, why's she so-reluctant to release them during primary season? She knows she'll eventually have to do it for McCain or the right will go into a justified full court press on the issue. Maybe there's no fire, but I think I smell smoke. I'm pretty sure my cattle futures blast from the past speculation is wrong, but doesn't Chelsea work for a hedge fund? Those have been quite lucrative in the era of print, borrow & spend spend spend. Maybe she did Mom a few financial favors somehow...

March 6, 2008 - 10:00 ET by motherbeltBut if so, why's she so-reluctant to release them during primary season?
Because that's how the Clintons are. They just reflexively refuse and fight against any request for "personal " information.
Is it a "requirement" that candidates produce tax records, or just something that's kind of "expected" in the spirit of openness? If it's required, she will not produce them a single moment before it is absolutely necessary. If it's not positively required, she won't produce them.
