For general discussion and debate. Possible talking points:
- Drudge is reporting (via Rasmussen) that Obama's now ahead of Clinton by four points in Texas. Meanwhile, Rasmussen shows Hillary's lead in Ohio slipping. Is Tuesday the end of the road for Hillary's presidential run this year? Will she concede next week, or continue to hang in the race despite the futility? Assuming the former, are you planning to celebrate, or despair because you're more worried about Obama?
- Speaking of Barack, Rasmussen finds people more comfortable with McCain on national security, Iraq, and the economy. As these three issues are probably most important to Americans at this point in time, doesn't this suggest that the current Obama inevitability is just as errant as Hillary's six months ago? Once the primaries are over, and the real campaign begins, how is a three-year senator going to prove his bona fides in these areas compared to a war hero that has been in Congress for 25 years?

Polls
February 28, 2008 - 10:55 ET by shawn228As I said yesterday, most times polls are useful because they clearly show the mood of people at the present moment
At the present moment, most people prefer Obama. The election is over 8 months away, anything can happen in that timeframe. ie scandal, a huge faux paux.
Obama - Superior Skills And "Untouchable" Color
February 28, 2008 - 14:02 ET by zeestephenAlmost two years ago I watched a tape of Obama speaking at a small college near Seattle. The undertext of his speech was obvious: "I am running for President." He was completely serious, and his communication and political skills were exceptional. He took on the toughest Democratic candidate since 1996 - H. Clinton - and gave her a serious beating. Obama will be a formidable candidate in November, much tougher than Hillary. He also has the advantage of being - or claiming to be - black. Some voters may vote against his skin color, but not many. In sharp contrast, the GOP will be accused of racism - or encouraging racism - every time they try to criticize the guy.
Obama is paper
February 28, 2008 - 11:04 ET by KC MulvilleOnce people get a load of what Obama's really offering (i.e., increased taxes to pay for a whole lot of Obama's political pie-in-the-sky promises), he'll start to wobble. Then, someone will ask him whether he intends to listen to his generals about Iraq. Obama will have to choose between losing credibility with his nutroot liberal base, or losing any credibility with the military. Either way, he's going to lose a lot, and the wobble will grow. Throw in the Rezko investigation. Count on Michelle Obama saying a few things to get them in trouble (she's a time bomb). And maybe, just maybe, we can convince Bill Clinton to campaign for Obama (unlikely, but we can hope). Obama's house of cards will fall down.
The problem now is that the only person who can beat McCain is ... John McCain. He's already collapsed once, and he has every potential to do it again, and again.
As Bette Davis said, "it's going to be a bumpy night."

Do you really think John McCain can take down Obama?
February 28, 2008 - 11:14 ET by robertjacobAnswer: Not by himself - he is going to need a lot of help. World events, ALL republicans, some dismayed Hillary supporters, independents, and a lot of coaching on how to give a speech.

February 28, 2008 - 11:23 ET by shawn228Make no mistake robertjacob, The majority of Hillary supporters will vote for whoever the nominee is.

In a Nutshell
February 28, 2008 - 12:08 ET by CGattonYeppers, I do, lol. In no meaningful order:
1. A lot of those who clain they will vote for him, particularly in polls, will not do so when in the privacy of the ballot box. Susan Estrich, with whom I seldom agree, had an excellent analysis of this phenomenon a few weeks ago. Bottom line? It's easier and safer to be a sexist than a racist in saying for whom you will vote to a pollster when you're a democrat. (If you are a Republican, you're an '-ist' anyway, so what you say doesn't matter.)
2. Contrary to what a lot of people here, and elsewhere, feel, there will be some amount of feminazi backlash against Obama for displacing the annointed one, and in today's photo-finish elections, that may be all/just what it takes to throw him into the toilet bowl of history.
3. While everyone wants to complain about McCain, and how he has abandoned the conservatives, the fact is there are not sufficient number of conservatives to elect a president. Only 39% of the electorate is conservative, and so moderates must be brought into the fold. All other things being equal, this cannot be done by someone on the right edge of conservative, and the trick for a Republican candidate is to present himself as, or actually be, sufficiently towards the center that he picks up as many of the right sympathizing moderates as he can, without losing any on the right fringe. Though you would not know it from what you see here, McCain is actually close to the moderate edge of conservatives (life-tme) or near the right edge of moderates (2006/2007). If it weren't for the short-sighted, very vocal, my way or the highway conservative pundits, that might be better known. What must be remembered about the pundits, is they have a desire and duty, actually, to try to drive the candidate towards the right. The problem is each candidate must be driven differently. Try too hard, and some will push back.
4. Despite the "record numbers" of primary voters, and the "tremendous ground swell of support" on the Democratic side...this is still basically just the base of the party voting. Obama needs, just like McCain, to appeal to moderates to swing the election. In fact, he heeds them more, because there are less liberals than conservatives in the country, whether you go by reality or exit polling. His problem is just the opposite of McCain's however, in that he is slightly right of the center to considerably left of the center of liberal land, so while he has a solid lock on the liberal base, he will lose the right edge of the moderates, without gaining anything in return.
5. His win over Hillary is due in large part to the fact that they are both competing for the same votes, only in this case he has much more appeal to the left edge of the liberal base, than she does, since she sits about three-quarters of the way to the right side of liberal land. Having virtually locked her out of the black vote, she has to try and make it up with the women's vote. This she has been unable to do, because the numbers are again against her.

KC, Obama has already begun
February 28, 2008 - 11:58 ET by motherbeltKC, Obama has already begun to flip-flop on Iraq....he told "60 Minutes" (Steve Kroft), when asked if he really would start to bring troops home immediately that (paraphrasing) he would always reserve the right as CIC to reassess the situation.
Now, does that sound any different from what everyone else has said?
And once people start to really pay attention and he is forced to answer specifically what his plans are for a "living wage" and universal health care and universal college (nevermind universal pre-K!), and making sure everyone gets to retire in comfort and dignity....well, then people will start to see just what a flaming liberal his is. He is by far the most liberal and socialist candidate we have ever had, in my memory.
Of course, people just might want all those "guarantees" that they'll always be taken care of....
And oh, yeah, let's not forget Michelle...aI agree that she is a time-bomb with an undetermined setting...she is even more arrogant than he is, and makes little effort to disguise it.

February 28, 2008 - 12:05 ET by candanceI'm not convinced the American people have the common sense to stop liberals anymore. Look, we've got Pelosi and Reid running Congress, and even among Republicans, half of them are rinos.
All those people screaming and fainting like they just saw the Beatles, and people like Chrissy talking about feeling tingles, I very much doubt they'll change their mind in the future.

February 28, 2008 - 12:20 ET by motherbeltHi cancance...we can only hope. I've said before, as you know, that the whole country is becoming more socialist, hence the Republicans moving left along with everyone else.

Of course, people just might want all those "guarantees" that they'll always be taken care of....
On the bright side....have you noticed that since there's been a lot of attention called to it, peole haven't been fainting at Obama events all the time?
As for Chris Matthews and some of the other "journalists" they might as well have "in kind contribution" tatooed on their foreheads.
know what else get me
February 28, 2008 - 12:27 ET by candanceI really love the way liberals and the MSM are always trying to redefine conservatives to fit their own image.
When Goldwater tried to run for president, they bashed him constantly and said he was an evil corporate stooge.
When Reagan ran in 1980, they attacked him every chance they got and said he wasn't as charming as that Goldwater fellow. The other day I was watching old reruns of Kate & Ally on daytime TV - just on that one show I heard at least three references to Reagan destroying America.
Then Reagan leaves office and we get Bush then Gingrich...what does the left say? They're not charming like Ronald Reagan.
Then Bill Buckley dies, and suddenly the man so hated by the left becomes an astute thinker with charm and good nature. Those current right wing people like Limbaugh and Cunningham are poor replacements.
When Rush Limbaugh dies, the MSM will suddenly realize he was brilliant and then complain that the new batch of conservative thinkers are evil in comparison.
This is one of their tricks to demonize the right every generation and keep the American people convinced that we are crazy, we've gone off the deep end, we lost our moral compass. It's not that the left doesn't like conservatives - they just don't like those conservatives.
So the casual viewer learns to stay away from conservative speakers.
Correction......
February 28, 2008 - 12:15 ET by OldSailor88"Look, we've got Pelosi and Reid running Congress,"
Should read, "Look, we've got Pelosi and Reid running Congress to a lower approval rating than George Bush and it's swirling around the bowl."
Like you, Candance, I don't think America is smart enough to see through the wall of B.S. the media is throwing in front of them so that they can make an informed decision. I still find it hard to believe that B. Hussein Obama can look all of them in the eye, tell them that he is going to raise their taxes and legislate their lives, and they applaud him and treat him as the second coming.

Stultus est sicut stultus facit
I agree to a point
February 28, 2008 - 12:50 ET by FastEdbeing a "glss a little more than half full" guy, I'm of the opinion that the american people appear less than smart when in comes to politics, but, when given the facts (and we know they won't get THAT from the msm(Lsm) ), they tend to head towards the truth.
Others here have pointed out that the primaries have had, and have received lots of attention, but the real test will be in Novemeber. At that point, after whatever October surprise is waiting in the wings, they will have more info about ALL the candidates, and their choice will be made based on that info - knowing full well that it has been filtered through the agendized view of the so-called media.
Now, if that view points towards a more socialized america, and the votes goes that way, it won't take long for everyone to see that it won't work - never has, never will, IF the people want to keep the living standard they now enjoy. It will be at that point that the real revolution of these United States will continue.
So, all in all, using my "not quite full glass" view, no matter what happens in November, good relult or not really good result, eventually, things will get better - based on what has gone before, we always get better.

All I can say is good luck McCain and all you smarter than heck know-it-alls....I know quite a few people who have had it with McCain and people like Rove who keep throwing real conservative candidates to the wind...

February 28, 2008 - 13:45 ET by Clear thinkerBritcom...
Although I share your passion in your opposition to McCain, I think the issue of him being, or not being a citizen is settled. I would rather see people use policy arguments and his voting record to oppose him.
Sort of related... Ann Coulter wrote her version of a farewell to WFB Jr. yesterday. And in her peice she included the following...
"With liberal Republicans still bothering everyone even after Reagan, Buckley went all out against liberal Republican Sen. Lowell P. Weicker Jr. When Democrat Joe Lieberman challenged Weicker for the Senate in 1988, National Review ran an article subtly titled: "Does Lowell Weicker Make You Sick?"
Buckley started a political action committee to support Lieberman, explaining, "We want to pass the word that it's OK to vote for the other guy or stay at home." The good thing about Lieberman, Buckley said, was that he "doesn't have the tendency of appalling you every time he opens his mouth."
After reading this yesterday I felt vindicated in my decision to use the write-in option for the upcoming elections. So for all of you that think I should vote for McCain because he has an (R) after his name, should think twice about those like myself that are persuing the legal, and ethical option of writing in the person that represents my conservative principles best.
Anotherwords, if it's good enough for William F. Buckley Jr., it's good enough for me!

The joys of wind energy.
February 28, 2008 - 11:59 ET by Dave in TexasThere is an interesting post on the energy blog at the Houston Chronicle on our grid hiccup in Texas a couple of days ago. A near-miss on the Texas grid.
To be fair, the need to implement the emergency plan was not completely the fault of the loss of 1,400 megawatts of wind power.
"At the same time the wind died down "multiple power providers [fell]
below their scheduled energy production," according to ERCOT. In other
words other power plants that had said they planned on spinning at that
time just weren't online."
For me though, this just begs a couple of questions. I assume those other power providers were the "dirty" ones. Any chance that their "scheduled energy production" has to be on the high side because of the unreliability of wind energy? If so, doesn't that negate some of the "clean" of wind energy?

A couple of weeks ago I
February 28, 2008 - 14:15 ET by motherbeltA couple of weeks ago I posted that I ahd written to Sen. Arlen Specter, regarding the Senate investigation into the NFL tapes controversy. I got an answer a couple of days ago.
After a synopsis of the events leading up to the Senate investigation, he had this to say:
I am concerned with the initial action of taping these signals against league rules as well as the way in which the NFL conducted its investigation and especially the league's decision to destroy the tapes.
In 1961, Congress enacted the Sports Broadcasting Act, which gave the NFL a special antitrust exemption. This exemption allows the NFL as a whole to negotiate broadcasting rights with television networks to show their games. This allows the teams to pool their games and receive enormous sums of money which has helped build the league into what it is today. Because Congress has given the NFL a special antitrust exemption, the league in turn has a responsibility to keep the integrity of the game intact. Just as steroid use disturbs the integrity of a baseball game, the illegal taping of another team's signals undermines the integrity of a football game.
While I agree there are more pressing matters facing the United States Senate, I also believe the NFL has a duty to maintain a certain level of integrity, especially taking into account their special antitrust exemption status. While I am not currently seeking a formal hearing, I have met with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and have asked to speak with other officials on this matter.

demonizing big corporations
February 28, 2008 - 14:23 ET by candanceLast night hubby and I got to talking about how certain industries in America get demonized and regulated to death all in the name of saving the little people or keeping us healthy.
But then we got to thinking...it really doesn't have anything to do with health or justice as much as it does those who make a big profit.
For example, if you want to target unhealthy products, why is there not a campaign against Big Tequila or Big Incense? Why do we only target Big Tobacco?
If we want to save the environment, how come there's no camapign against Big Airlines?
Could it be that the left targets industries that have big profit and then makes up excuses to demonize them? How convenient that the two biggest "bad guys" in America right now, Big Oil and Big Tobacco, are also the biggest moneymakers for the government?
Why is WalMart demonized for their low wages but not the Dollar Store? Why is McDonald's demonized for making people fat but not Godiva? Could it be that the only difference is the profit margin?
I fully expect to see Big Medicine as the next bad guy in need of punishment since there are massive taxes to be collected in that industry. Also Big Internet.

Difference between Dollar STore, Godiva, and Wal-Mart, McD's, is pervasiveness and/or effect on towns.
okay bal
February 28, 2008 - 15:39 ET by candanceSo basically you agree with me: it's not low wages or bad products, it's their popularity and financial impact.
Well, Godiva doesn't serve
February 28, 2008 - 18:24 ET by balboaWell, Godiva doesn't serve breakfast lunch and dinner. McD's does (not that I think McD's is the bad guy. Self-discipline, people!).
And Dollar Store doesn't have near the inventory or effect on local businesses that Wal-mart does.

February 28, 2008 - 17:31 ET by ckc1227"Why is WalMart demonized for their low wages but not the Dollar Store?"
Folks are attacking Walmart because Walmart is the big guy on the block, and the most successful. Those attacking Walmart(cough, cough libs, cough) hate success. Plus Walmart isn't unionized, another big no no in the eyes of libs.
Prince Harry in Afganistan
February 28, 2008 - 14:27 ET by Hero SquadDrudge breaks a story that the media has apparently kept hush for 3 months.
So is this a good thing or a bad thing that this info is now out? More to the point for Newsbusters, if in fact they were aware of this development and chose to keep it quiet, what criteria do they use to determine what stories are squashed and which ones are trumpeted?
UPDATE: From Sky News..."The deployment had been cloaked in secrecy under a news blackout deal agreed across the UK media to prevent details reaching the Taliban and endangering Harry and his comrades."
According to Howard Kurtz on CNN
February 28, 2008 - 15:47 ET by sarcasmoAn Australian magazine had broken the story 6 weeks ago...Since it was the idiot-box, I don't have any cite and I forget the name of the magazine, but that's what I just heard.

Speaking of Drudge...
February 28, 2008 - 15:41 ET by sarcasmoHe just reported that Prince Harry's fighting in Afghanistan, a factoid the UK media had, until today, been keeping carefully under-wraps. It's a bit odd, in view of NYT-secrets coverage here, to see no NB blogs about it so-far today, but maybe that's me.

This video is funny as you-know-what. Here's part of the text from it...
"At one point, Vidal, the America-hating homosexual leftist (a pervert on both counts!), called Buckley a “crypto-Nazi,” and Buckley’s response was priceless. "Now listen, you qu--r. Stop calling me a crypto Nazi, or I'll sock you in your goddamn face and you'll stay plastered."
