For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: Did Obama get votes robbed from him in New York (paragraph breaks removed):
Barack Obama's primary-night results were strikingly under recorded in several congressional districts around the city - in some cases leaving him with zero votes when, in fact, he had pulled in hundreds, the Board of Elections said today...Unofficial primary results gave Obama no votes in nearly 80 districts, including Harlem's 94th and other historically black areas - but many of those initial tallies proved to be wildly off the mark, the Board of Elections confirmed...Truth is, in some districts getting a recount, the senator from Illinois is even close to defeating Hillary Clinton.
Isn't this the state in which Hillary is senator? Are the Clintons at fault, and is this a foreshadowing of what they'll do at the convention to steal the nomination from Obama?

Incompetence, Indifference, Or Criminality?
February 17, 2008 - 14:17 ET by zeestephenReminds me of the alleged "vote stealing" that took place in predominantly black precincts in south Florida during the Bush-Gore fiasco in 2000. Turned out almost every precinct involved had a registered black Democrat as precinct captain. So, in 2008, I'm supposed to believe that black Democrat precinct captains in New York City deliberately made all of Obama's votes disappear because, like, you know, absolutely no one is going to notice?

February 17, 2008 - 11:26 ET by ThisnThatI've always said, even an additional 10 minutes of the Clintons in the White House would have turned into total disastor for this country. Why did they trash the White House before they left? Because they are vindictive, destructive, evil people. And now Ickes is saying that Hillary will get the super delegates; and they will get the MI and FL delegates? And they will win the nomination?
I hope so. She will then have the whole country against her, and the Republicans will likely garner 90% of the black vote.
Go Hillary!

A Few Simple
February 17, 2008 - 11:36 ET by ghotifunA Few Simple Questions...
Did the Clintonistas ever apologize for their "associates" vandalizing public property, specifically the WH and computer keyboards?
Did the Clintonistas ever issue a sharp statement in rebuke of those actions?
Did the Clintonistas demand that the perpetrators make financial restitution to the owners (the citizens of the US!) of those computer keyboards, the walls, the monitors, the chairs, etc...
I think Ickes might be right. . .(shudder)

Key facts to know about these "financial instruments"
February 17, 2008 - 20:38 ET by ThisnThatBlonde,
I found the following two items the most intriguing part of this so-called Muslim bond thing:
Islamic bonds are slightly more expensive than Western-style bonds, mainly because they require extensive legal and religious advice.
Ok, now let's translate for all the dunderheads out there. In simple, United States terms:
All future Municipal bonds will be based upon the word of God, and guided by the Bible. Prior to purchasing a bond, the buyer will be required to attend Catholic Mass, and agree to go to Confession at least once every two weeks until the Bond matures in 20-30 years. Finally, each buyer agrees to tithe a portion of his interest to the Church each month.
Does anyone think that will fly in the U.S.? Or even Great Britian? Of course not. But it's ok if it's Muslim, the Quran, and Clerics.

One could say the same things about Kosher food
February 17, 2008 - 20:47 ET by sarcasmoYet it somehow survives in the marketplace anyway, despite higher costs. In the case of hot dogs, even non-Jews like me are known to willingly-pay extra money for Kosher products. I doubt I'd ever feel the same about Islamic financial instruments, but any extra choice is always a good thing, even if it might seem like a silly choice.

Where'd you get
February 17, 2008 - 21:30 ET by sarcasmo"Government"??? [Edit -- Oh, the linked story! I'm not a big fan of governments getting involved in it, as you might imagine, but governments weren't always that prominent in financial affairs, Islamic or otherwise!]
Presumably this demand for Islamic financial instruments would come to banks from customers, just like hot dog demand comes to supermarkets. If that doesn't compute, you probably should get off the thread, because it's pretty simple as a concept.
Islam exists. It's a big enough financial marketplace that serving its adherents well is likely to be profitable despite their blinkered-IMO views on the time value of money. But I never said government could, or would, or even should, do the job of financial institutions. Indeed, governments screw that job up with inflation/scandal every time they try it...
JMR
If this is winning, I think I'd rather lose...
Islam exists
February 17, 2008 - 22:41 ET by ThisnThatYes indeed, Islam exists. It's an ancient, midieval religion tha not only requires you to kill the non-beleivers, but requires you to embed religion into every aspect of your life. And that's the problem. We have rules of law -- they have clerics. We are trained in the use of binding contracts -- they use a religious hierarchy for all decisions. With Islam, your life is embedded within the religious trappings, and every aspect of that life is monitored to enforce obedience. That's no way to run a business; or your life. And saying that "Islam exists" simply isn't enough justification to start turning towards it.

Who's turning towards it??
February 18, 2008 - 07:14 ET by sarcasmoI'm merely saying that I think all religion deserves respect, even when I disagree with its views on how to run a life. In the case of finances, they all seem to have some bad ideas and some good ones. Ignoring the time value of money is in the "bad, but understandable" category for me. The power of compounding interest probably seemed like black magic back then to all sorts of folks, not just Muslims, and not even starting with them. Laws against "usury" predate Christ, and Christ predates Islam.
I think unlimited borrowing from China is more of a long-term danger to the USA than the non-al-quada adherents of Islam. I don't think all of Islam wants to control my life, even though some obviously do want control over individuals (just like certain Republicans). And speaking of unlimited-borrowing, I also find it a bit odd, in view of the restrictions of Islam, that we borrow so-much money from Saudi Arabia's dictatorship.

February 17, 2008 - 12:15 ET by dscottA typical example of Dem Party machine politics, "we know better, we will make the choices for you, do as we say." Yeap, just a practice run of the super delegates at the Dem nomination convention. If the Dem rank and file don't put up a major fuss over this it will be business as usual by the party bosses. Yes people of the world, you are witnessing how Democracy can be stolen, the difference between US Dems and Venezuelan Socialists is Hugo Chavez was more discrete and had anybody who attempted to talk put in jail. Dems are so brazen about election fixing because they have been doing this so long without consequence. Please notice the tactic of omission is just as good as stuffing the ballot box. Since this is a political primary vote, I suppose fixing the results isn't a felony?

All Democrats Cheat
February 19, 2008 - 12:07 ET by cziganIn the last election for governor in Pennsylvania many of the black districts in Philadelphia had over a 100% turn out voting for Rendell and they claimed it was justified because blacks would be disenfranchised if they had to show ID before voting. The surprise was that he ran against Lynn Swann and all of the blacks I know didn't vote for him because to be a black Republican means you are an Uncle Tom.
