Saturday Sports Open Thread

Real sports fans know that when the Super Bowl ends, one of the most exciting events of the year isn't far away: March Madness, Baby!

As such, let's talk some College B-Ball.

Will Memphis run the table? Is Duke as good as their record indicates? How about the Tarheels?

When you look at the current top 25, who'll be in the Final Four two months from now, and who are the surprises to keep an eye on?

Anything else sports-related on your mind?

Final Four

At the beginning of the season, my "Final Four" was UNC, UCLA, Kansas, and Georgetown.

Even though it appears the top tournament seeds might be Memphis, UCLA, Kansas, and Duke, I'll stay with my original picks.

And I'm a  l o n g - time Duke fan.

BTW, those with an interest in UNC-Duke should find a copy of "To Hate Like This is to be Happy Forever". Fun reading.

I hate the Tarholes!!!

It was good to see the Dookies whup up on those Blue Scumbellies from Hippie Hill the other night. I remember growing up in NC when the Soviet Union would send it's Olympic team to play the US college teams before each summer games. Half of NC would pull for Russia! Go to hell, Dean Smith!!!

OK Noel I am mad at you. You

OK Noel I am mad at you. You had to mention DOOK. I have been trying to forget that game from Wednesday night. I have took all the crap I could take from the DOOK fans at work on Thursday. (I was off Friday.) Now you bring it back up. The Heels play Clem's son Sunday in Littlejohn. Even though Clem's son is 0-for Chapel Hill they have had better sucess at their home. I am looking on the postive side. We play DOOK again on mar 6th in Camron. There is always the posiblity we'll meet in the ACC tourney. That is 2 more chances to get them back.

Well at least racing starts back this weekend. The NHRA fired up night and NASCAR has a couple events this weekend.

Don't worry, Duke won't be

Don't worry, Duke won't be there at the end. The win against UNC was great, but can't be duplicated too many times.

NASCAR

Fastest growing sport in the country gets started this weekend with the Bud shootout.

Scrapirom

There are lot of people excited to see how Junior is going to do at Hendrix. Myself I want to see what Joe Gibbs' teams can do in the Toyotas. I am also wanting to see how John Force is going to do in his comeback and how he handles having 4 cars running in funny car. I am making plans now to go to Charlotte September 11th to see the NHRA should Humpy Wheeler get the track finished in time.

OOOh those bad "gasoline" burning

yahoos from the south, starting up so soon? /sarc
As a joisey yankee, who would like to see the Waltrip "come back", (considering last years' non-start) things should be exciting with the "con" {car of now}, and Dodge, Chey, Ford and Toyota (michael is cloe to the top 10) and Busch and Stewart have already been warned to stay away from each other. With everyone getting to know the new cars, there should be a lot of new paint before every race!

“...Bury me on my face,” said Diogenes; and when he was asked why, he replied, “Because in a little while everything will be turned upside down.”

Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox equipment truck left Fenway Park this morning at 10:30 AM, destination Fort Meyers.

In other Sox news, Curt Schilling has been getting conflicting medical advice-the surgeon who worked on his arm before says he'll never pitch again without more surgery, but the team medical people say rest and rehab should work. In order not to void his new contract, Curt is believing the Red Sox's doctor.

Rob Dibble on XM radio had Schillings personal doctor on The Show and the Doc says his tendon is very far gone.

The NL West will be fun to watch, 3 horses in that race. I don't have as much faith in the LA youngsters as LA (and fans) does.

I don't know if Julio Franco is playing this year, but this young spring chicken has a long career in front of him.

Goose Season is closing

Goose season is closing on the great plains and I will miss that closer, but look forward to perhaps some spring walleye fishing with kastmaster before ice is out.

I have not watched the final college hoops for a few years now. Just have been so turned off of the NBA gangsta crap and it just does not have the appeal of football nor in sports which one can actually participate in as Teddy Roosevelt did.

One observation though, why do the networks always do their worst to hide cheerleaders? I do not know anyone who complains of seeing them so why do the MSM hate cheerleaders so much?

"feminists" hate females

It's the same with the ring-girls in boxing. Not-showing them will, allegedly, cause men to be less-interested in them. They believe this BS despite years of real-world experience to the contrary. It's all part of what I call "the war on FUN," which includes a jihad against male-dominated "sins" like demolition derbies, etc...

I always wanted to get into politics, but I was never light enough to make the team.

Ice Fishing Time

This weekend here in central NH, it's fishing derby time. $59,000 worth of prizes this year...

Ready for NHRA!

I heard that John Force made a complete 1/4 mile test run on the new frame setup the other day, against doctors orders..heh! Dont know if he is trying to qualify this weeked, but I will be cheering for team Force! Put Capps away early Robert!

Doug Herbert

I hope that Doug Herbert can have a good season after the tragedy of losing his sons. Sure do want to see Force back. The sport is not the same without him. Ashley and Robert did a good job to keep the name going last year but there is just something about John. I am going to have to Tivo the qualifing ESPN because the Bud shootout is being run at the same time.

Show Some Love For Ice Hockey

(or "'ockey" as our friends in the "Great White North" might say.)

NHL Hockey can be one of the most exciting sports to watch (better in person than on TV). It's unfortunate that the league chose VS. over ESPN.

As for me, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that my Penguins can keep playing well so that when "Sid the Kid" Crosby returns to full health from his high ankle sprain it will be a case of making a good team better. ;-)

Just my $0.02

Pass the Back Bacon

I finally gave up on my Boston Bruins-the last time they won the prize was when Dick Nixon was President.

We follow UNH college hockey here in New Hampshire, where the fans toss a fish on the ice after a goal is scored. But like many other teams, they always seem to fold when they get to the "tournament", as Bill Parcells calls it.

Being an IU grad, I say

Being an IU grad, I say just watch the Hoosiers, baby!

Georgetown must really be

Georgetown must really be good. With the record they have in the tough big east division. And they were real good last year, so they are experienced.

Notre Dame and UConn are really coming on strong lately.

I like Kansas to go deep and maybe all the way. They got a tough one with Baylor tonight and then some other toughies later in the big 12.

I don't doubt that Memphis is a great team. But with that division, I question whether they are quite as good as other elites like Kansas and UCLA.

Why is Villanova having so much trouble lately? I know they have a lot of freshman and are inexperienced, but they were #17 not that long ago. Now 5 straight losses including a hideous game at St. Joseph's.

In the NBA could we be in for a classic matchup: Celtics vs. Lakers?

Go Zags!

Go Zags!

" I have took all the crap

" I have took all the crap I could take from the DOOK fans at work"

Wow, you said "dook", lol. How original. :)

Folks better keep an eye on this Duke team. I think they can make some noise come tournment time. Ultimately though, I think they will come up short, not because of a lack of an inside game, but because of free throws. That's why they lost the one game they did to a team that thoroughly crushed them on the inside. One more make from the line(should have made 8 more) and they win in regulation.

Unfortunately, they're still not shooting very well from the line, and eventually it's going to catch up to them.

NHRA Winternationals this

NHRA Winternationals this weekend. Thank goodness for some real horsepower. So far Melanie Troxel is #1 Qualifier in Funny Car with a 4.81 second run at 327 MPH. Antron Brown leads in Top Fuel with a 4.49@330 MPH!

Nothing like 8,000 horsepower to get your blood pumping! Finals tomorrow night on ESPN2

I'm guessing

THAT ain't no Prius!!
