For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: some interesting new polls:
- McCain has double-digit leads on Romney in New York, New Jersey and Missouri but narrowly trails the former Massachusetts governor in California, the biggest prize on "Super Tuesday."
- Obama has a slight lead in California and is virtually tied with Clinton in New Jersey and Missouri heading into the biggest day of voting in a U.S. presidential nominating campaign, with contests in 24 states from coast to coast.
Does Romney have to win New York or California on Tuesday to stay in the race? Can Obama run the table and really put pressure on the Clintons?

Hartford Courant spanks the New York Times
February 3, 2008 - 10:50 ET by RJIn an editorial today, the very liberal Courant shamed the NYT for it's dishonest attack on veterans that suggested they kill more Americans than non-veterans.
The following paragraph is interesting in it's admission that Vietnam vets were also falsely labeled by the media:
"This happened after the Vietnam War, when the troubles of a relatively few veterans were writ large onto the whole cohort. News stories for years would be sure to mention that someone arrested on minor charges was a 'Vietnam veteran,' perpetuating the notion that vets were walking time bombs, ready to explode."
Romney May Have A Little Oxygen
February 3, 2008 - 13:08 ET by zeestephenIf Romney pulls out a win in California, he will definitely have political viability, especially since Arnold and Rudy made a point to endorse McCain at the Ronald Reagan Library. But, as noted by a comment below, McCain holds big leads in the winner take all states, and, ultimately, McCain's delegate numbers are the only viability that matter.
Also, when did California become a proportional primary vote? One of the most exciting primaries of all time was Goldwater versus Nelson Rockefeller in California in 1964 when the state was winner take all. I stayed up that night on the east coast until 2am secretly listening to election returns on my radio. Goldwater won by a couple points, the Conservative movement was born, and I went to school as one sleepy teenager the next day.
Final thought - Wednesday morning I was convinced the Conservative movement was on life support. Is this sudden Romney surge in Rasmussen's polls an illusion or a Great Awakening?

It takes a day or two for polls to catch up with sentiment. Romney won the last debate, handily. McCain came off as an ass. The masses are PO'd.
If we could could shut down the amnesty bill, there is no doubt the people can send McCain packing. We just have less time to do it!
It won't be reported, but like Wyoming, Romney won the Maine caucuses by a commanding amount. I never thought of Maine as a conservative state. But what do I know?
I have faith that people are seeing the light. I actually HOPE McCain calls Romney a flip-flopper like the media is. All Romney would have to point to is the 2004 near defection of McCain, as the ultimate flip-flop! (and the ultimate act of betrayal) That would shut that crap right up!

Any way I fired this e-mail off to Specter but I doubt he reads.

Maybe the NY Giants will win the Superbowl and show that a 12pt Bookie handicap is just a SWAG.
Exactly
February 3, 2008 - 13:21 ET by JoelCTThat is precisely correct. I think the Republican Party needs to take a long hard look at how this year is going, and re-evaluate how we are doing our primaries. It is obvious that the Republican nominee cannot be chosen this way, as it is completely broken. The first primaries are from states that allow Democrats to vote with the Republicans? That is totally idiotic.
We need three things, in my opinion:
1) NO CAUCUSES. This country is founded on the secret vote. You get behind the curtain and you make your choice without anyone looking over your shoulder. You make your choice on paper, and you drop it in a box. If it takes all night to count it, so be it.
2) NO DEMOCRATS. It is insulting that I even have to write this one down. In Texas, they stamp your card "Republican" or "Democrat", depending which primary in which you vote.
3) One Super Saturday Primary, 7 AM to 7 PM (local time). If you have to work that day, or can't find a sitter, or your favorite TV show is on, or whatever, you can vote absentee up until the Friday before the Super Saturday Primary.
The Democrats can do whatever they want, who cares?
A Couple Amendments
February 3, 2008 - 13:54 ET by zeestephenJoel CT - I like your idea of a "super primary," but I feel it is essential to have 5-6 individual state primaries spread out over two months, first. Otherwise, you really magnify the risk that someone kind of kooky, or someone with well concealed weaknesses, might break through and win the nomination.
As to Demo's voting in our primaries, I agree completely, but keep in mind the reason for that - tax payer financed elections. Republicans have to break that chain and self-finance their own primaries. For that matter, we need to self-finance our own debates and break the chain of depending on "publicly owned" broadcast spectrums.
Under McCain-Feingold, that probably can't happen, since McCain has forbidden wealthy Republicans from donating beyond certain limits.
I think we could solve this problem by having a primary based on mail-in ballots. The Republican Party could mail a ballot to every registered Republican in the USA. Ballots would be time stamped, according to the state. After the initial two months of individual state primaries, there would be a hiatus of say, six weeks, then the other 45 states would vote. The voters would mail the ballots back to one central location where Republicans - not government employees - will count them.
The cost for own primary might run $75 million. I think wealthy Republicans would subscribe that amount in 24 hours!
Why is everyone wanting
February 3, 2008 - 17:23 ET by Gary P JacksonWhy is everyone wanting Gomer Pyle to leave? He isn't winning anything! He can't even carry his Evangelical base! Mitt Romney has carried them in every contest except Iowa. Gomer is a one trick pony. Romney on the other hand, has either won, or been runner up in most of the contests.
THAT'S why Gomer needs to go. It's the right thing to do for the party. Will Mr Happy win a state or two? Sure! But that will be it. He cannot ultimately beat McCain. And he REALLY can't beat one of the dims, not even Hillary!
So this is one of two things for Huckleberry, either it's a vanity deal, or he has sold his soul to the devil. (in this case, McCain)

The Rezko affair looks very, very much the whip for Obama and it appears the cartel has changed plans once they were exposed here and elsewhere for a brokered convention to bring Al Gore and Bloomberg in.
The new plan is to make McCain the nominee as he is Al Gore with white hair and allow Obama to go down to burning defeat which will please those eugenics racists of the cartel so a black or minority will never be allowed to run for higher office again.

Keyes: Romney responsible for same-sex marriage fiasco
Charges 'complete misunderstanding' of role as governor, significance of court's opinion

Alan Keyes
Republican presidential candidate Alan Keyes may not get invited to the televised debates but that doesn't mean he's going stay out of the fray or not attack his opponents when he believes they've abandoned his party's values – particularly on the issue of same-sex marriage.
On his campaign website this week, Keyes blasted former Gov. Mitt Romney for being "single-handedly responsible for instituting same-sex marriage in Massachusetts" for the way he responded to a state court ruling in 2003.
"Most people are unaware of the way Massachusetts came to adopt same-sex marriage," the former Reagan administration diplomat said. "They think the state's Supreme Judicial Court forced it to happen. That's incorrect."
"The court merely issued an opinion stating that, in its view, the existing marriage law was unconstitutional because it failed to allow persons of the same sex to marry," Keyes said. "The court then gave the legislature 180 days to 'take such action as it may deem appropriate in light of this opinion' – implicitly telling lawmakers to come up with a new marriage statute."
Noting that the legislature did not act within the court-imposed 180-day window, refusing to let the judiciary infringe on its law-making powers, Keyes said the only reason same-sex marriage became the law was because of Romney's actions.
"Mitt Romney pushed through same-sex marriage all by himself, in the absence of any authority or requirement to do so, having a complete misunderstanding of his role as governor and of the significance of the court's opinion," said Keyes.
"The court never ordered him to act, nor did he have the right to act, since the legislature never changed the law. Romney claimed he had no other choice, but that's completely untrue."
Keyes' charge echoes reporting by WND last July on Romney's role in implementing 'gay' marriage while he was governor.
Romney's aides told WND that after four of the seven court members reinterpreted the definition of marriage in Goodridge v. Department of Public Health, the governor believed he had no choice but to direct clerks and others to change state marriage forms and begin registering same-sex couples.
Constitutional expert Herb Titus – Harvard law graduate, founding dean of Pat Robertson's Regent University Law School and former candidate for vice-president on the Constitution Party ticket – said Romney got it wrong.
"What Romney did [was] he exercised illegal legislative authority," Titus said. "He was bound by what? There was no order. There wasn't even any order to the Department of Public Health to do anything."
"All the Supreme Judicial Court did was pronounce their judgment, declared their opinion," he told WND. "Gov. Romney is like too many other governors in America. If a court says something, they jump."
Keyes concurred.
"The appropriate course of action for Romney was to do nothing," he said. Instead, "as governor, he created, in essence, his own same-sex marriage rule and then enforced it – reportedly threatening local clerks with dismissal if they refused to comply with his executive order."
And while Keyes called Romney's actions "catastrophic" and "among the most socially-damaging actions by a chief executive in our nation's history," their significance lay in the way he would operate as president.
"The failure by Romney to 'say no' to corrupt activist judges in a critical controversy over 'separation of powers,' and his willingness to take unwarranted steps that exceeded his lawful authority, reveal the kind of chief executive he would be if elected president," Keyes said.
Titus noted that the Massachusetts Constitution probably is the most specific in the nation on the separation of powers.
"It makes it very clear that ... the judiciary doesn't have either executive or legislative power," he said. "It specifically rejects any claim of supremacy by any one of the branches over the other."
But in the Goodridge case, the court said, "We are the supreme expositors on the constitution," he said, even though the justices admitted reformulating the definition of marriage, "which means they have blatantly exercised legislative power."
"It was a phony lawsuit ... much the same way as they have show trials in the communist countries," Titus told WND.
Romney instituted homo marriage because he BELIEVES in it! He did it because he promised the sodomites that he would be a BIGGER friend to their hell bound "community" than TEDDY KENNEDY and the "suggestion" not order, of the court, gave him COVER. The devil you know in McCain is much better than a lying SHAPE SHIFTER who will say or do whatever is en vogue at the moment.

February 3, 2008 - 15:54 ET by KeithNo in "my own religion" there is no such thing as "What would Jesus do" that comes from those bereft of the Spirit of Sanctification who merely "think" that they have it. The reason that this is so is because the bible assures us that we "have" the mind of Christ. What else does your infantile understanding of scripture think that they are, if not Christ's WILL? If you want to know how Jesus feels about a subject all you have to to is READ. DUH! And about those who "change their mind" with the friggin' wind.....Jesus said this...
Revelation 3:16
So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.
That's how Jesus feels about people like Romney who are neither hot nor cold, having no opinion of themselves but rather "going with the flow". Again you betray your ignorant understanding of scripture in that you think it possible to "forgive" someone who has never SOUGHT your forgiveness. That is as stupid as it gets. Forgiveness like REPENTANCE is a TWO WAY street, it must be SOUGHT in order to be GRANTED.To my knowledge Romney has never asked me to forgive him of ANYTHING. The fiasco he presided over by giving FILTHY BEASTS the right to marriage should forever DISQUALIFY him from being president of a so called " socially conservative" party. But most of you are just "SCINO'S", Social Conservatives IN NAME ONLY!
Before some numb with half a scripture drags out Christ ASKING that those who crucified him be "forgiven", that was a REQUEST, Jesus himself had the power to forgive sin, but he didn't do it. He asked that they BE forgiven which would have required them to Repent. Since the bible declares that the "goodness of God leadeth a man to Repentance", what Christ was doing was setting up the conditions whereby those who slew him would be converted. This occurred on the Day of Pentecost in the SECOND CHAPTER of the book of Acts when PETER reminded them that....
36Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made the same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.
37Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?
38Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
As you can see if you keep reading these same people who Jesus prayed forgiveness for, were eventually forgiven AFTER THEY REPENTED and received the Holy Ghost THE ONLY WAY IT IS GIVEN, unlike most of you.

February 3, 2008 - 20:01 ET by PopularTechIt is really sad ignorant morons like you are part of the Republican party. Your lies and smears never stop. Not liking Romney is one thing but lying about him is simply unacceptable.
It is so embarrassing backwards morons like you call yourself Republicans. Please go start an idiotic religious party and push for your theocratic ruler.
Your IQ is below zero, it is like you people never evolved. Please do some research and learn how our government works. The Governor has no power to change a Judicial ruling or to change a law. The executive branch must follow the law as written and interpreted. I know you fools think this branch has dictatorial powers but that is because you IQ is so low.
I am serious you people are embarrassing.

Keith is Simply Lying about Romney and Gay Marriage
February 3, 2008 - 19:45 ET by PopularTechIt was dishonest enought that Duncan Hunter was lying about Romney and 3com. This is just another reason I have problems with Keyes. I researched this issue when I first heard about it and it was the Massachussetts Supreme Court and Legislature that are responsible for the Gay Marriage Issue in Mass, anyone who claims otherwise is simply ignorant. It is so sad that the Gay Haters want to smear Romney for something he is not responsible for when all he did was try to prevent it.
Mitt Romney "Chose" Gay Marriage?
"We construe civil marriage to mean the voluntary union of two persons as spouses, to the exclusion of all others. This reformulation redresses the plaintiffs' constitutional injury and furthers the aim of marriage to promote stable, exclusive relationships. It advances the two legitimate State interests the department has identified: providing a stable setting for child rearing and conserving State resources. It leaves intact the Legislature's broad discretion to regulate marriage."
"In their complaint the plaintiffs request only a declaration that their exclusion and the exclusion of other qualified same-sex couples from access to civil marriage violates Massachusetts law. We declare that barring an individual from the protections, benefits, and obligations of civil marriage solely because that person would marry a person of the same sex violates the Massachusetts Constitution. We vacate the summary judgment for the department. We remand this case to the Superior Court for entry of judgment consistent with this opinion. Entry of judgment shall be stayed for 180 days to permit the Legislature to take such action as it may deem appropriate in light of this opinion."
That was the Mass Supreme Court Ruling only the Mass Legislature could change the law. Romney literally pleaded with them to change it and went to the Federal level to have them ban it, he even wrote how other states can prevent this from happening- One Man, One Woman (The Wall Street Journal). To claim otherwise it blatently dishonest.

Keith you are liar and utterly dishonest. It is so sad that dumb evangelicals are so easily brainwashed. You people are an embarrassment to the Republican party and should get out.
These ignorant people think a Governor can rule against the Judicial Branch or Change the law like the Legislative Branch are so out of touch with reality they believe the dumber than dirt Huckabee can do the same as President. Did you morons graduate high school?
