For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: Is Bill Clinton threatening his legacy with his recent behavior on the campaign trail?

The Bill Clinton we have come to know, as Mrs Clinton has taken the political lead as a New York senator, is an elder statesman. Having seemingly placed the anger and humiliation of the late stages of his presidency behind him, he has travelled the world trying to improve life for millions of people. [...]

But this Bill Clinton has not been seen since Barack Obama emerged as a serious threat to Mrs Clinton’s hopes of the presidency. Instead of a non-partisan philanthropist, US voters see a partisan operative getting red-faced with anger as he bitterly rails against Mr Obama for, in Mrs Clinton’s words, “raising false hopes” that the US can be otherwise. [...]

Maybe Mr Clinton is so emotionally caught up in getting his wife elected (and absolving his infidelities) that he cannot help himself. Or maybe it is a calculated political gamble in which he plays bad guy to her good woman and stirs up Latino voters to block Mr Obama’s progress. Either way, it does not reflect well on him.

Is Clinton's recent behavior a calculated campaign gamble, or has the former president suddenly lost his political swagger and stability? Will any of this matter to his reputation in the future, or will he only survive history's wrath if Hillary wins?

If playing hide the cigar

If playing hide the cigar didn't do that ... nothing will. Besides, he wants to earn his place in the history books by helping put his degenerate half in the ovulating office.

What? Threatening his legacy??!!

Lying to win the governorship of Arkansas, lying while governor, lying to win the presidency of the US, lying while president, lying in a court deposition, lying while campaigning for his wife...

It seems to me he is simply solidifying his legacy and at least being consistent.

The day that "politician" became a career choice is the day we started losing the Republic. Let's get it back! Alan Keyes '08.

His legacy?! You mean his INFAMY.

All he is EVER going to do is ADD to that.

As Dick Morris Points out...Bill is crazy like a fox

Bill is sucking up all the Oxygen in the Room....no one is covering Hillary anymore, and Hillary is leading in the Polls nationwide.  Bill is insulating Hillary from news coverage, negative or otherwise.

Hillary WAS in the news, ad nauseum, now (Dick M. says)"Bill is the Red cape in the Bull ring", and nobody is looking at the lady on the horse, riding away with existing votes, never to be scrutinaized  like she was.

Even NB joins ranks with MSM....although I think the MSM is Driving what NB looks at.

Anyone Heard about Hillary's Socialists Platform lately  ? ?  Bill is shielding her from any more microscopes, and is sucking up all the MSM air time.

It's a KILL BILL attack, instead of Kill the Candidate that's running attack.  Crazy like a Fox, he is.

Bush isn't running, neither is Bill (I hope), but Obama needs to attack Hillary and what SHE says.

Morris was right on with his analysis.

I thought Bill was masterful in Nevada commenting on the unfairness of the opportunity to vote of the Culinary Workers.

I'm thinking Bill's comments mobilized the White voters against the predominantly Brown Culinary workers.  And nobody seemed to notice it was his comments that turned the tide.

Love him or hate him, but don't call him stupid.

Morris also has a "Win by losing" SC article

The Theory is..the Clinton theory....if the Black vote goes for Barracki, then the White voters will react, and go for Hillary.   A Racist reaction to a perceived Racists reaction....all in the confines of a Secret Ballot.....

DICK Morris is, as usual,

DICK Morris is, as usual, failing to look at all the sides of this issue. Yes, Bill is sucking up all the ink and airtime, and Hillary is going unnoticed. But while this may be favorable for her in the short term, in the long term it's costing her. The only person conservatives hate more than her is Bill, and the more Bill stirs the pot the angrier and more motivated conservatives get. Next, Bill is getting all this attention by beating up the first Black guy with a shot at being president... he's not beating up some republican, and that's costing her votes with the blacks. The way he keeps stepping up the attacks, he could very well convince most blacks to stay home next election day rather than vote for Hillary. Lastly, I find it hard to believe that women can sit there and watch Hillary continually taking a backseat to her husband and still feel that she's qualified to be president. At some point they are going to start saying "for God's sake woman! Stand up for yourself!", and when she doesn't it's going to cost her more votes.

The Clintons may think that they are brilliant politicos by dragging Obama into the mud with them, and making him out to be a mean, insultive, guy. But remember that blacks chose to re-elect a mayor in DC who had been guilty of all manner of real offenses, and convicted of drug possession, rather than vote for a white guy. If they keep ticking off black voters, they'll remember come November.

→ Bruzilla

Keep in mind, in the Democrat world, The African American vote is up for grabs in the Primaries.

In the General Election, it's sewn up.

HillBilly's plan is to save the sucking up for the General.

Once again... the Democrats

Once again... the Democrats in Maryland thought the same thing... right before blacks came out and voted for a white Republican governor over a Kennedy or just stayed home after she had slighted them and made them mad.

gotta disgaree

I have to disagree with Bru on a few points:

-It's not really correct to say conservatives hate Bill more than Hillary, at least in the case of most conservatives I know. The Clintons are two peas in a pod.

-If being impeached and disbarred didn't make him go away, nothing will.

-No one thinks of Hillary as failing to stand up for herself. She is the mastermind of this whole attack in the first place.

-ROFL black Democrats not voting for a Democrat.

I hang out with the gun

I hang out with the gun toting crowd, and we definately hate Bill more than Hillary... although, granted, not by much.

I agree with your second point, which is why he's going to destroy himself no matter what anyone tells him.

You're wrong about no one thinking Hillary is failing to standup for herself. I work in a company of 9,000+ employees, where 80% are women. My group is comprised of 27 women and three guys. So needless to say, I've heard a LOT of female opinions over the past four years. I heard nothing but positive things about Hillary early last year, about how brave she was, how smart, how courageous for taking on all these guys. Then I started hearing more and more of the "what the hell is she thinking?" kind of comments, and lately I've started hearing more and more "she's going to let him (Bill) roll her over, and he'll be president!" comments. The attitude of women IRT Hillary is changing. Changing slowly, but changing.

To your last point, I remember how Kathleen Kennedy-Townsend and her supporters said the exact same thing about blacks in Maryland. How could blacks ever vote for anyone but a Kennedy running in Maryland! But they came out and voted for Ehrlich, a white Republican, or stayed home rather than vote for a female Democrat with a storied name just because she had slighted them.

No one will remember

The Clintons bank on the short memory span of the American public. If Hillary gets elected, no one will remember what Bill did to help her win. The headline will bury the details.

The strategy is clear. Since Obama can't afford to confront Bill directly, and since Hillary won't accept responsibility for anything Bill says, Bill gets to fire off all the cheap shots he wants. Obama and the media need to hold Hillary acountable for everything Bill says.

I woudl agree with you if we

I woudl agree with you if we were talking about just Republican voters or Americans in general. But the Clintons are ticking off black voters, and these folks aren't so fast to forget or forgive once you transgress against them.

I remember back to when Kathleen Kennedy-Townsend ran for governor in Maryland, one of the blue-est of the blue states. Her predecessor had always maintained close contacts with the black communities, but as Lt. Gov, Kennedy-Townsend never bothered to travel out of Annapolis except for campaigning. One day during her bid for governor, she went to a Giant Foods distribution center in a largely black area, and when she said "I guess we all know why I'm here", a vocie came from the crowd saying "yeah... you need our votes. That's the only time we ever see you!" The crowd went nuts, and despite being a Kennedy in Maryland, she lost to a Republican.

I think white voters may forgive and forget, but black voters have long memories.

What does that tell you?

The Clintons have calculated that they don't need the black vote.

Once they get the nomination, the Clintons presume that they're going to get the black, Hispanic, and under-30 vote in the general election anyway. Therefore, since it won't come back to haunt the Clintons in November, they feel free to piss those groups off in the primaries. Right now, in politics, the only variable is women, so that's what the Clintons target. They're willing to throw everyone else under the bus.

If I was a GOP consultant, here's what I would do. Let's say that Hillary wins big on Super Tuesday, and puts some distance between her and Obama. That's the moment to make a serious, honest, and good faith effort to appeal to Obama's supporters. While Obama is still viable, his supporters wouldn't consider it. If you wait too long, history shows that those supporters will fall back into the Democratic line sooner or later. They'll have forgotten how the Clintons mistreated them, and will unintentionally verify the Clintons' strategy. So, if Hillary wins Super Tuesday and starts to pull away, the GOP should appeal to Obama's supporters right away, while those supporters have fresh memories of what the Clintons are really like.

  • The crucial part is that you have to make a serious appeal. You have to follow through honestly on any promise you make. But if you make a serious and honest appeal to Obama's supporters, while they have fresh memories of how the Clintons lied and took them for granted, that can only be a good thing.
  • You may win only a fraction of those groups, but since the last two elections were decided by fractions, every fraction counts. That isn't playing politics, it's politics as it was supposed to be, i.e., as long as you follow through on your promises, there's nothing wrong with appealing to voters at a time when they might be willing to listen.

KC..Exactly..anyone remember

Win the Primary...the Election run after the Convention will bring forgiveness for whatever went on before, once the nomination is completed.  Even Obama will congratulate the winner.

Anyone Remember the name of McCains Advocate ? Romney's 2nd in command ?  Obama's main Spokesperson beside him ? ?

Would that all the 2nd's in Command of any candidate get the Free press than Wild Bill is garnishing...and it's ALL about "Negative slants on Obama" ,,,,unfortunately, I agree with Bill on some points about Obama...but there is LOTS more to learn about "What's her Thighs".

"Barack Obama is a Powerful Speaker—And so is My Bose Bass Amp"  Doug Giles

It depends on the meaning of legacy.........

It all depends on who writes the Clinton legacy.

Currently: 1) Hillary is allowed to claim 8 full years as co-president without anyone in the press asking about what she actually did or knew during those 8 years 2) the press and historians never even noticed that after 2 years of Clintonism the Democrats lost both houses of Congress and multiple governorships 3) wildly popular President Bill never received 50% of the vote 4) during the 1990's, other economic factors besides a Clinton Presidency were at play. 5) while under oath, neither of the Clintons seem to be able to remember anything that happened, anytime or anywhere.

"Barack Obama is a Powerful Speaker—And so is My Bose Bass Amp"  Doug Giles

If she gets elected, she

If she gets elected, she could use this strategy to solve the healthcare issue. Why pay a cardio-vascular surgeon $20,000 an hour to do surgery on you when you can get the surgeon's wife to do the surgery for $100.

Bill Clinton has never left

Bill Clinton has never left campaign mode even after winning an election.  Everything this guy does is calculated for public consumption.  He is the consumate actor and salesman, why even Ronny couldn't act as well as Bill.  Bill wants to be co-president for another 8 years, he can taste it so bad, that he would fracture the Dem Party by crushing Obama to do it.  This will be another replay of the Ted Kennedy 1980 coup attempt at the Dem Nomination convention against Jimmy Carter. The infighting was so vicious that it turned off many Dems. Even the Huffpo knows what Hillary is all about: she's already established herself as a triangulating centrist.

It's not the right wing that you need to be worried about, Watch out Obama, the Clintons are gunning for you.  Bill is employing the Rope-A-Dope strategy, intentionally drawing Obama into a confrontation on his terms.  As long as Obama responds directly, Hillary gets to stand above the fray to look presidential.  Here's a hint for you, the way to break a triangulating attack is to make it into a square.  Any attack from a surrogate must be responded to by a surrogate. Get Soros and his front groups to respond to the attacks from Bill Clinton, because everytime you lower yourself to respond directly, you come off as a whining pansey. No one votes for a pansey, not even Dems.

Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity. dscott's corollary: The line between malice and stupidity is called depraved indifference.

yuk

Clinton is just too full of himself to ever sit back and relax. He needs to be out there with everyone paying attention to him. Don't kid yourself, if the Mrs. is elected he will have his fingers in every pie at the White House while the Mrs. plays second fiddle.

2 Timothy 3:13

But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.

Former Congressman Harold

Former Congressman Harold Ford (D-TN) came to our company yesterday, and I got to attend a lunch and subsequent meeting with him. Pretty interesting guy. The first thing he said that got my attention was when he talked about torturing terrorists. He said that if someone knows of an attack on the US, we need to get that guy and get the information from him whatever it takes, and if that means we torure him, we torture him. I was kinda shocked to hear a Democrat talk that way.

His next comment of interest was also about Iraq. He said that "the folks who are out there telling you that we can get out of Iraq in 60 days, or six months, or a year, aren't shooting it straight" and aren't telling the truth. He said that if America leaves Iraq before achieving victory, that we are condeming our children and grandchildren to having to keep coming back and refighting the same battles. Again, another odd thing to hear from a Democrat.

Next he spoke of how Dr. King's views were not of white or black, liberal or conservative, republican or democrat, but rather doing what's right instead of what's wrong. I thought that's an excellent point. Then he brought down the whole concept of what he had just said five minutes later when he said he would support whoever the Democrat nominee for President is. Even though he had just called all of the liars about Iraq, even though he had just said we should do the right thing and not the republican or democrat thing, he went and trashed the best point he had made all day.

Lastly, he related a story about when John McCain invited him to go to Iraq with him. He was thrilled to be invited as he was the only member of Congress asked to go by McCain. When they got to Iraq, McCain would go off to play bigshot at each stop, and make Ford carry his bags wherever they went. He was litterarly McCain's Skycap. Then after one meeting with some generals, McCain pulled aside the senior guy and playing Mr. Bigshot again asked the general what he needed the most, and the general replied "I need more interpreters". Ford, who said he rarely spoke in these instances, said "why don't you ask the State Department to send you some?" He said that as soon as he said that he regretted it because McCain turned and threw him an ice cold look, as if to say "how dare you offer a suggestion! I'm the one with the ideas!"

Ford

Interesting story, Bruzilla. Ford comes on FoxNews on occasion, and I've always thought that this is a guy we can haggle with.

It's funny. Yesterday I posted something about McCain being a legislator, as someone who looks for compromise, but that the problem is that the Democrats exploit compromise. And yet, Ford is one good example of a Democrat who is willing to be fair ... but McCain treats him poorly.

He came across as a pretty

He came across as a pretty likeable guy, and he stressed that he often ticked off his fellow Democrats because he believes in a strong military and it's use when needed.

The only thing he did that disappointed me was when he said he would support whoever the Dem nominee is instead of whoever the best nominee turns out to be. That just blew all the arguments he had made about working together right out of the water.

Still in a quandary about Hunter support of Huckabee?

...then read this (h/t Drudge: NYT: ROMNEY AS AN OUTCAST WITH RIVALS...)

January 24, 2008
Romney Leads in Ill Will Among G.O.P. Candidates
By MICHAEL LUO
TAMPA, Fla. — At the end of the Republican presidential debate in New Hampshire this month, when the Democrats joined the candidates on stage, Mitt Romney found himself momentarily alone as his counterparts mingled, looking around a bit stiffly for a companion.

more... http://www.nytimes.c...

“Never get into a wrestling match with a pig,” Senator John McCain said in New Hampshire this month after reporters asked him about Mr. Romney. “You both get dirty, and the pig likes it.”

Mr. Romney probably knows Mr. Huckabee the best, aides said, as the two were governors at the same time and ran into each other often through the Republican Governors Association and the National Governors Association.

"Paradoxically, sometimes the enmity between them appears to be the sharpest.

Aides to Mr. Huckabee say he did not get to know Mr. Romney very well as a governor, finding him distant at meetings. The aides said they were also irritated that Mr. Romney did not call after Mr. Huckabee’s victory in Iowa."

HUNTER on HUCKABEE:

” I got to know Governor Hukcabee well on the campaign trail, “said Hunter in a press statement.” Of the remaining candidates I feel that he is strongly committed to strengthening national defense, constructing the border fence and meeting the challenge of China’s emergence as a military superpower.”

Hunter said one other quality compelled him to endorse the Iowa caucus winner.

“Mike Huckabee is a man of outstanding character and integrity. I saw that character over the last year of campaigning and was greatly impressed, ” Hunter continues.”

Poptech...an honest question

When Huckabee raised all of these taxes, did he actually do it or was it done by the Arkansas state legislature?

He did not veto them

Many he proposed and signed but he did not Veto a single one. I would have no problem with him on these if had not pandered for many or vetoed them all, even if they were overturned. The fact is - he is an economically illiterate.

Pop-Tech - STOP reprinting your book every time Hucks name

is mentioned. Several people have asked you before to stop, but still you continue. These links you put up about Huck, every time his name comes up, are really getting old.

I really don't see why you feel the need to paste the same 'book' in these threads at least once a day.

It's not Right vs. Left; it is Right vs. Wrong

The Good Book

As Huckabee would say it never gets old talking about the Good Book.

Just a suggestion;

Just a suggestion; you should probably create a blog or Web page of sorts to serve as your clearinghouse of these article links. Then and create a signature link to your page here so that people interested in delving further or who are seeing you for the first time can go take a look.

For the people who visit here regularly, you would benefit your cause more by just posting your article updates here; because honestly, they are getting lost in the shuffle of what looks like the same post over and over again. That defeats your purpose.

So the other Candidates don't like Romney? That's it?

So your argument is that the other candidates do not like him? Wow I
had no idea he was running for the nomination by making friends with
his competition. Some great quotes here:

Mr. Schnur used a schoolyard analogy to compare Mr. Romney, the ever-proper Harvard Law School and Business School graduate, to Mr. McCain, the gregarious rebel who racked up demerits and friends at the Naval Academy.

“John McCain and his friends used to beat up Mitt Romney at recess,” Mr. Schnur said.

Yeah so John McCain was a loser bully who graduated 894th out of 899 in his class, tell us something we do not know. We are well aware of McCain's anger problem:

Need to all read and pass on

Great change since 2003 to high 2007-never heard this, did we!  http://www.djindexes.com/mdsidx/downloads/xlspages/DJIA_Hist_Perf.xls  All we heard during this time was the info on days when DOW tanked!  Seems Dow increased 4939.09 from low in 2003 to high in 2006 by this chart.  Add another over 1800 in 2007, that's increase of over 6700 points from 2003.  Can someone say correction instead of whipping the R word out whenever we have a slight down ward period!  Oh, but that's right, SOROS told them all to say "IT'S THE ECOMONY STUPID!"

Agreement in House!

Seems when they need to people on Capital Hill can work together.  This is not yet a done deal, but small business should like.
