It's Championship Sunday: Do you know where your bigscreen TV is?
I gotta say that I'm more excited about today's conference championships than any in years, mostly because of the old school nature of the Giants taking on the Packers on the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field. Honestly, for a real football fan, with all these new stadiums, some of them indoor, many with astroturf, does it get any better than this?
Add in the whole story line of an aging Brett Favre, having been written off by so many sportswriters, fans, and pundits, possibly taking his team back to the Super Bowl. If that's not why we watch sports, what is?
So, who do you like here, and why?
As for the Patriots and Chargers, if you're not a New England fan, and aren't rooting for the underdog here, please explain why? Would you really root for Goliath if present at that historic matchup? Would there be anything more delicious than a banged-up team from Southern California going into frozen Foxboro and stickin' it to the cocky Patriots and their cocky fans? Or, is a marquee matchup between Brett and Tom in the Super Bowl so desirable that David should take a fall for our future entertainment pleasure?

As for today's matchups, the New York/Green Bay matchup is a classic! I'm soooo glad that I will be sitting on my warm comfortable couch watching this one.. or either matchup for that matter.. it will be damn bitter cold in Foxboro today.
I'm pulling for the Giants, and frankly, I'd like to see the Patriots win. The Giants played a great game against NE a few weeks ago. I'd like a re-match.
Everybody stay warm and enjoy the games!

Hater? Moi? Nah.
I don't like Belichick, as he seems to be an extremely disagreeable individual. This year, when the Pats played the Colts, he practically snubbed Tony Dungy after the game. One of the most classless things I've seen from a head coach in years.
Beyond this, Randy Moss has been a disgrace for this league and this game since he first stepped onto the field for the Vikings. To me, he represents everything that's wrong with professional sports, and it would make me very unhappy if he ever won a Super Bowl ring.
I am a person who appreciates the personalities in sports as well as the competition. As such, in my view, the personalities of these two high-profile Patriots leave a lot to be desired, and make me root against the team's success. Fair enough? ns
Noel
January 20, 2008 - 11:56 ET by OldSailor88Fair enough, my friend. Belichick is a bit of an ass, and Randy has been bad in the past for sure. Randy deserves a break, though. Everyone deserves a second chance to grow up, and I think Randy has done that, so I don't hold it against him.

January 20, 2008 - 12:05 ET by Noel SheppardOS,
Randy was given multiple second chances to grow up in Minnesota. If you remember, Cris Carter took him under his wing to try to get him to behave, and finally gave up.
Furthermore, he was given another "second chance" in Oakland, and was a complete disaster.
Right now, he seems to be walking the straight and narrow. If he continues to do so, and becomes a walking billboard for kids and athletes behaving better, I'll become a fan of his. Until that point, I think he's a loose cannon waiting to explode that Belichick and Company have done a good job keeping under wraps. Time will tell if this is a long-term recovery, or a rally in a bear market. :-) ns
Could It Be Possible
January 20, 2008 - 13:11 ET by Del DolemonteIt just might be that Randy needed an a-hole coach like Belichik to turn him around!

January 20, 2008 - 13:52 ET by RJWhat are you trying to say? huh? huh? Are you saying we're aggressive and obnoxious and cocky or something? huh? huh?
RJ and JC
January 20, 2008 - 14:44 ET by Noel SheppardRJ and JC,
The question was a serious one: are Patriots fans also Red Sox fans?
Reason for the question: in recent years, Red Sox fans attending baseball games in Northern California are the worst behaved by far.
Years ago, although being a diehard A's fan, my second-favorite team was the Sox. My parents up until this year lived in Western Massachusetts; I honeymooned in Boston. Love that town.
However, about five years ago or so before the Sox won their first World Series, Sox fans at the Coliseum became unbearable. To give you an idea of just how bad: worse than Yankees fans. In fact, not even close.
When the Sox played the Giants in interleague I believe it was two years ago, the behavior of their fans at Pacbell Park was abysmal, so much so that our newspapers wrote about it. Friends of mine present said that they had never witnessed such behavior from baseball fans in their lives.
Now, maybe this is just how transplanted Sox fans behave, for in the past several years, I have seen two games at Fenway, and observed no such behavior. Had a blast both times, including a few years ago when the A's were in Boston, and my kids and I were in A's gear. Nobody mistreated us at all.
However, the behavior of these transplants in "my" ballpark, and across the Bay, has soured me on this team. Make sense? ns
If You think Red Sox Fans are bad..
January 20, 2008 - 14:59 ET by nixonYou Might want to attend a Match at the Lions den( Chelsea FC ). :) We had to have a police escort int,and out of the stadium .
Noel
January 20, 2008 - 15:01 ET by RJI'm serious when I say that I suspect the overblown concept of "Red Sox Nation" has brought in an element of tagalong riff-raff to some areas....too many to have all come from Boston.
Here in CT, where the split between Yankee and Red Sox fans is pretty equal, there's a lot of friendly banter, but it's rarely "obnoxious." :^)
Sounds Like a Localized Problem
January 20, 2008 - 16:28 ET by Del DolemonteThat's a shame. Sounds like a new generation of transplants.
BTW, I went to a Red Sox-A's game in Oakland back in the 1970s and it was a blast. Of course, that was two years after Finley broke up the team that had won 3 World Series in a row, so the A's were awful. Only 3,000 people in the stands, on a Friday night in August.

2) "Took him under his wing?" What are they running up there in Minnesota, a liberal feel-good Outward Bound Program For Wayward Boys? A football coach isn't Dr. Phil, and Belechik understands that. Maybe if Minnesota had a coach who could connect with Moss on a grown-up level, get him to grow up and bring him into the team concept as Belechik has, there would have been no need for "multiple second chances." :^)

But I don't buy into the "if only" thing. For example, the Patriot's loss of Rosevelt Colvin in November could have easily ended their perfect season, but the key attribute of Belichik and the Pats is their ability to assess and adapt to problems like injuries and different game plans of opponents.

From your linked story: "However, the Boston Globe reported today that Moss' agent, Tim DiPiero, stated in an e-mail that he contacted the FBI and U.S. attorney's office in Moss' home state of West Virginia last week alleging that the woman's attorney was trying to "shake down" Moss. DiPiero's e-mail also said that McGill threatened that Washington had "lots of dirt" on Moss and might reveal it unless Moss paid her an amount with six figures."

January 20, 2008 - 11:53 ET by JoelCTI feel sorry for the players and the fans in Green Bay. Here is the forecast (Currently -11 degrees)...
Today: Sunny and cold, with a high near 2. Wind chill values between -20 and -30. West wind between 10 and 14 mph.
Tonight: Mostly cloudy, with a low around -9. Wind chill values between -15 and -20. West northwest wind between 6 and 8 mph.
Foxboro Forecast: Today: A chance of snow showers, mainly between noon and 3pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 24. West wind between 14 and 16 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Little or no snow accumulation expected.
Here in Central Texas, we got down to 17 last night. The streets are deserted. No one here owns anything that they can wear outside in that cold of a temperature, so we are staying inside until the Texas sun warms things up. Stupid Global Warming, where are you???

Global Warming messed up our snow
January 20, 2008 - 12:35 ET by ricklailHere in eastern NC we were supposed to have gotten several inches of snow last night from a system moving up the coast. It was the same system that dumped snow in the Hotlanta area. Well the cold air didn't make in time so it was mostly rain. Temps tonight are supposed to be in teens. Right now the winds are at about 25 mph out of the northeast making it feel cold. Damn global warming messed up our snow. We don't get much but it is nice to see it once in a while.

Here's what I'd like to see
January 20, 2008 - 11:55 ET by ricklailI would like to see the Packers beat the Giants and the Charger beat the Pats. My reasoning: Eli Manning refused to go to San Diego. That would be a slap in his face if the Chargers, the team he turned down, went to the Super Bowl and he went home. And to add insult to injury Phillip Rivers won the Super Bowl.
Eli Manning is the most overated QB in the league. I guess it has something to do with the NY press's overhype. He is not worthy of carrying Farve's jockstrap. He will never be anywhere near as good as Payton nor his dad.

2 for 4
January 20, 2008 - 14:54 ET by Lame CherryI was only right on 2 games last week and this week we will see soon.
It is not too bad in Green Bay today as I have the same weather. The sun is warm, but the problem is going to be when it gets dark as it will be 5 below to 10 for the game.
Home field goes to Green Bay
Kampman and the corners go to Green Bay
Running game Green Bay
Quarterback Green Bay
Passing game goes to Green Bay
Pass rush goes to the Giants
Kicking game is neutral as it the linebackers and coaching.
But if the Giants can get at Farve and stop the run in the backfield, they have an optimum chance of winning........but except for Farve being cold in Chicago........The match says Green Bay wins by 21.
In Foxboro, people are speaking of banged up San Diego, but not noticing these factors.
The Pats linebackers are old, slow and Teddy quit tackling last week.
Their secondary is porous to the pass.
Their line is open to slashing run of the Chargers.
On the offensive side, since the NFL took my published advice and started knocking up Randy Moss and blitzing Brady, their offense shuts down.
The Pats running game is nothing and will be dismal due to the fast linebackers of San Diego.
Match ups are simple.
Pats win on Brady coupled with Wes Welker.
Chargers win on overwhelming defense, LT and some very good wide recievers opening holes that even a second string quarterback can pass too.......they are proven that good.
If the Chargers follow my published game plan of knocking up Moss, floating Merriman in front of Welker for short pass interceptions AND a little flush blitz I have been working on in sending a safety or lineback to Brady's right to get him looking there and in a stunt instead send in Merriman on Brady's blind side in passing to drive a shoulder pad into his kidneys as he eats turf EARLY IN THE GAME. The entire Pats team will fold as Brady will be so stiff in the cold he will not be able to play effectively.
My pick: Chargers 28 Pats 17.

"The Pats linebackers are old, slow and Teddy quit tackling last week."
Except, last week the Pats held the Jags to 80 rushing yards, 70 below their average.
What all your armchair coaching plans overlook is that the Belichik and the players adjust and adapt to whatever gameplan is thrown at them. Along with that, they make fewer dumb mistakes and they protect the ball better than most teams. It's a Belichik mantra.
As far as knocking Brady down, the Giants tried that with hit after hit, and Brady never flinched. For the entire game, he stood there to the last second to get his pass off, even though he knew another hit was bearing down on him. In that game, Brady impressed me with his cojones. He's a man, and he wins football games.

Favre will be carried off the field by members of the 1972 Miami Dolphins -- flown in by the NFL for the purpose.

Shades of Super Bowl XL
January 20, 2008 - 17:20 ET by scamoramaRemember all the talk about how great it would be for Bettis to win a Super Bowl in his home town in his last game?
Was there really any doubt about the outcome of that one?
scam
January 20, 2008 - 17:30 ET by Noel Sheppardscam,
Yeah, there was doubt. It was a close game if you recall. If Seattle's big mouth tight end -- don't remember his name! -- would have caught a ball or two thrown right in his hands, the Seahawks win that game going away.
Don't get me wrong -- I was rooting for the Steelers. However, that wasn't a walk away for Pittsburgh. ns
Jerramy Stevens
January 20, 2008 - 17:50 ET by scamoramaYou're thinking of former Husky Jerramy Stevens, who drank his way out of Seattle.
I'm thinking of calls that went against Seattle -- either killing Seattle drives or keeping Pittsburgh drives alive.
That game and the NBA draft that put Patrick Ewing in New York are the only two times I've ever thought a fix was in.
scam
January 20, 2008 - 18:07 ET by Noel Sheppardscam,
Well, for me as a Bay Area resident, that draft sent Ewing to NY, and although the Warriors should have had the first pick, they ended up with the seventh.
That was a JOKE! ns

Green Bay - New England SB
January 20, 2008 - 17:52 ET by BobbyGChargers are trying to win by kicking field goals...unfortunately for them the Patriots have decided that scoring TDs is the best way to win this game.
The GB-NY game should be good, but I think the Pack's going to the Super Bowl this year. Gotta love Manning & co. for taking out the Cowboys. Even though I'm a life long Packer fan, I don't think we could win in Dallas. Something about that place does weird things to Favres mind...and his arm.
Current temp at Lambeau is about 1 degree, global warming? Not in Green Bay Al.
Folly! All is Folly!
January 20, 2008 - 23:19 ET by scamoramaIt's not that Green Bay lost; it's the way they lost that frosts (of course, -24 wind chill will do that).
I guess this means the New York ratings for the Super Bowl will be good.
Sheesh!
the fix is in??!!
