For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: number of abortions drops to lowest level since 1976:
"It could be more women using contraception and not having as many unintended pregnancies. It could be more restrictions on abortions, making it more difficult for women to obtain abortion services. It could be a combination of these and other dynamics," said Rachel Jones of the Guttmacher Institute, a reproductive-health research organization publishing the report in the March issue of the journal Perspectives on Sexual and Reproductive Health.
What do you think is responsible for this?

Not that we don't all know the UN is worthless but....
January 17, 2008 - 11:07 ET by Prester John....get a load of this from report about increased U.S. airstrikes in Iraq.
"The greater reliance on air power has raised concerns from human rights groups, which say that 500-pound and 2,000-pound munitions threaten civilians, especially when dropped in residential neighborhoods where insurgents mix with the population. The military assures that the precision attacks are designed to minimize civilian casualties -- particularly as Petraeus's counterinsurgency strategy emphasizes moving more troops into local communities and winning over the Iraqi population -- but rights groups say bombings carry an especially high risk.
"The Iraqi population remains at risk of harm during these operations," said Eliane Nabaa, a spokeswoman for the U.N. Assistance Mission for Iraq. "The presence of individual combatants among a great number of civilians does not alter the civilian character of an area."

Hey Eliane, I have a good idea. Why don't you go talk to the headchoppers and tell them about your concerns about civilian casualties and then politely ask them to move their activities to somewhere where innocents aren't put in jeopardy?
Do these people even understand what they are saying?

January 17, 2008 - 11:07 ET by Dee Bunkabout how the U.S. fertility rate is also at it's highest. Now I don't see the article there so maybe I read it somewhere else. My first thought when reading that article was that I bet it's because the abortion culture has changed.
Not that it's harder to get abortions, because it's not, but we have a government that actually cares and puts value on unborn babies and I think it has trickled down. This is great news and I hope that the country doesn't screw it up by electing Obama (who's views on abortion are radical and treat it no different than removing a tumor) or Clinton who would put the bogus "health of the mother" exception to any kind of restriction and would nominate judges just as liberal as the one's Obama would.

Abortion
January 17, 2008 - 11:25 ET by WR JonasThe cause is clearly the spread of the term reproductive health. It has such an official and important sound to it that it immediately draws your attention. Like shouting "achtung " in a German restaurant. But it also disguises the actual act itself in a clever and high minded way. Who could be against health? Or wellness?( Another clever liberal wordover) Why, no one! I'm for reproductive health if that means keeping our reproductive equipment healthy. But. of course it doesn't ,it 's about disguising the murder of unborn infants. Now that has an ugly and disgusting sound to it. Don't you agree? How clever these people are, to have found a simple way to murder infants and make it SOUND acceptable . I'll betcha god won't be too impressed!

Ann Coulter a Mitten?
January 17, 2008 - 11:33 ET by BruzillaReading Ann's latest column, it appears she now falls into the category of women smitten with Romney who Rush has defined as "mittens". Like all the other mittens, Ann says her in-depth analysis of Romney's stands on issues shows that he is not a flip-flopper because he has only flip-flopped on one issue: abortion. I guess that's like saying someone's a great husband for keeping a job and a roof over our heads... although the regular beatings are a bit much to take. If Ann actually did her research, how did she possibly miss Romney's flip-flop on gun control laws and the NRA? On Gay rights? On stem cell research? I don't have Ann's often glorified access to Lexis/Nexis, but even Google offers plenty of evidence of Romney's flip-flopping.
Ann also takes the mitten stance that everyone who dares to call Romney a flip-flopper must be jealous of Romney's greatness or an agent for the Democrats who are terrified of a Romney win. Please! Do all these women suffer from the political equivalent of battered-wife syndrome? Rushing to the phone or computer to bail their guy out of "jail" everytime he gets busted for flip-flopping? Your guy is getting called a flip-flopper because he's a flip-flopper!!!
I think Ann needs to get some professional help... and vote for Thompson.

Most of what is in the bible is there to help comfort people and help them live a better life. It's not there as an excuse to go around condemning others.
Being Gay is no more a sin than thousands of other sins that we all commit every day. You need to worry about your own sins and not other peoples. It's ignorant to assume you know what sins God will decide to forgive and what one's he won't. There is nothing about being Gay in the 10 commandments and even those sins can be and are forgiven. You completely ruin the actual good arguments against Gay marriage by trying to condemn Gay people.

Perhaps the people to which they refer have sinned. In fact, they probaly have, as have all of us, but it is up to God, and God alone, to decide when their time is up and their punishment is to be meted out. We are on God's timetable, not our own.
I have been taught from a very early age that we will be held to the same standard we apply to others. I think there are many Christians who are so blinded by their zeal that they forget this.
I am in no way suggesting that Christians should condone the behavior of sinners, but I have a real problem with those who seem to think that they are any where near wise enough to decide the sinner's punishment.

Dee that is the worst load
January 17, 2008 - 16:16 ET by Dan The Man 2Dee that is the worst load of thoughtless crap I have ever seen. You realize you just gave the license for terrorists to act without impunity? This statement says so “for believers and interpreted by their religious leaders” and by that it is a personal thing for them with no right or wrong and we must not call it wrong.
BTW I am very gay at times and sometimes I am not, I don’t see what being happy has to with practicing homosexuality. Homosexuality is an abomination against God.
We legislate morality all the time and sop we should.
Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark.

January 17, 2008 - 16:41 ET by Dee BunkYou must have a pretty sheltered life Dan if my statement is the worst load of thoughtless crap you've ever seen - even if I would have meant it as you have misinterpreted it.
I didn't say anyone had impunity. In fact I'm saying the opposite. Everyone is responsible for their own actions, regardless of their religion. You forcing your beliefs on someone is not going to help them spiritually. It is between them and their spiritual leader. If they choose a murderous nutcase as their spiritual advisor, then that doesn't give them impunity against any crimes they commit. Religion is a choice or it's not a religion.
Being Gay - if it's a sin, is a personal one that doesn't affect anyone but those committing the sin. Being overweight is a sin and you don't go around calling overweight people an abomination. Once you have yourself all perfect then maybe you can lecture others, otherwise limit your spiritual guidance to those who seek it and even then give it with the humility that lets you forgive their sins as they forgive yours.
No the worst load of crap
January 17, 2008 - 17:05 ET by Dan The Man 2No the worst load of crap saying we as a peopel dont have the right to legislate morality. We do it on a regular basis. There will be legislation regulation something based on someones morality, happens all the time and will continue to happen. The trick is whose morality do we legilate? Should we legislate the morlity that says it is ok to abort or the one that says it is not.
The whole of law is based mainly on morality. Remember we must choose who's morality and I choose mine.

January 17, 2008 - 17:20 ET by Dee BunkYou can legislate it if the people support it. Laws on morality should be limited to those that harm others. It should be up to you to decide what is write for you when it doesn't hurt anyone else. Without choice you can't have faith and faith is more important to God than actions. Without personal choice a country is not free and no different from communism.
I don't want liberals telling me I can't smoke (even though I don't) and that I have to wear a seat belt (even though I do) and I don't want religious conservatives making religious laws even though I may morally agree with most of them. In a free society, laws are there to protect people from others - not from themselves.
Abortion doesn't just affect the person having the abortion, it affects an innocent life.
Dee and so allowing
January 17, 2008 - 17:43 ET by Dan The Man 2Dee and so allowing homosexuality to be legal in every sense worsens us also. Do you realize what you said "Laws on morality should be limited to those that harm others" an I say allowing homosexuality harms us. It is a disagreement. I say it does because it is the camels nose under the tent. One only needs to look to Europe to see where lax morality leads to.
I know you heart is hardened by contemporary morals and society that your eyes are blind but try and see beyond the narrow time frame that is your life.

Hmm it used to be regulated
January 17, 2008 - 17:58 ET by Dan The Man 2Hmm it used to be regulated by law and there were many more mores that were taken for granted we did not need laws for. So do you have a problem with that? Or a problem with any laws?
Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark.
All the laws you need are in the Good Book!

Blasphemy! It is written in the Good Book!
January 18, 2008 - 02:19 ET by PopularTech"If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them." Leviticus 20:13
Does God promote this hatred? Hell will rain down on you for thinking such thoughts! You will obey.

You are spreading something, alright.
January 18, 2008 - 02:25 ET by R D HelmI cannot speak to whether or not you hate, as only God can look into a man's heart.
However, as far as what you are spreading around here, well, that would be manure.

January 18, 2008 - 01:23 ET by shawn228I second that Dee Bunk. Awesome post. I thought conservatives were for own personal freedom. Not dictating to everybody else how to live their lives.

Shawn show me where I have
January 18, 2008 - 11:12 ET by Dan The Man 2Shawn show me where I have professed to being a conservative. I am Christian first and foremost andmost times that follows conservative principles. Again I say we as a society legislate laws to regulate morality and I want my morality not some other guys in laws. Libertarians are for personal freedom, conservatives are for personal responsibility.
