January 3, 2008 - 13:08 ET by sarcasmoIf you're into Brit-humor, it's hilarious. Also on today's videos, Hugh Hewitt gets OWNED and then scurries-off rapidly. And third on the menu is the Larry King clip that never happened (much like Stossel's!). Fun fun fun!

Iowa caucus logistics
January 3, 2008 - 13:16 ET by c5thenI was laughing at a description of what actually takes place at the Iowa caucuses (on Fox News of course).
Republican caucus: Show up at neighborhood precinct and cast a vote for your choice. Results are tallied and reported.
Democratic Caucus: Have to have at least 15% of the votes in order to be counted. Once it's determined who actually is "viable" (15% or more of the preliminary votes) the supporters of the non-viable candidates get to decide who else they want to vote for. Then the final votes are taken and the results are reported.
Leave it to the Democrats to decide who is "viable" and who is not first and effectively disenfranchise voters.
The day that "politician" became a career choice is the day we started losing the Republic. Let's get it back! Alan Keyes '08.
go stand in your corner
January 3, 2008 - 13:20 ET by SouthJersey1953GMA this morning said the Dems 'stand in the corner' of their candidate. If the group they are standing with does not amount to 15% of people in room, you have to go stand with a larger group. Members of the larger groups will try to coax those from the lessor groups to "join them"

Today's Global Warming Update.
Bloomberg manages to completely befuddle readers about the latest unemployment figures. In a nutshell: First-time unemployment claims dropped 21,000 (6.25%), but remains "a level that suggests the labor market was weakening into the new year". Also: "Companies appear finally to have realized that the pressure on earnings can no longer be offset merely by holding back on hiring, so the pace of firings is picking up". Huh? So, first-time claims DROPS, and the analysis is; FIRINGS ARE UP? It would be prudent to hide the razor blades as you read the entire article. At least Reuters was a teensy bit more honest.
It looks like we need to update our "Worst Driver in the World" stereotype, from Asian woman to Asian woman using cell phone.

This my friend......
January 3, 2008 - 14:32 ET by OldSailor88is pure blasphemy to the AGW freakazoids! It's also a must read for all 'Busters. Here's my favorite part(emphasis mine);
"Carbon dioxide is not to blame for global climate change. Solar activity is many times more powerful than the energy produced by the whole of humankind. Man’s influence on nature is a drop in the ocean.
Earth is unlikely to ever face a temperature disaster. Of all the planets in the solar system, only Earth has an atmosphere beneficial to life. There are many factors that account for development of life on Earth: Sun is a calm star, Earth is located an optimum distance from it, it has the Moon as a massive satellite, and many others. Earth owes its friendly climate also to dynamic feedback between biotic and atmospheric evolution.
The principal among those diverse links is Earth’s reflective power, which regulates its temperature. A warm period, as the present, increases oceanic evaporation to produce a great amount of clouds, which filter solar radiation and so bring heat down. Things take the contrary turn in a cold period.
What can’t be cured must be endured. It is wise to accept the natural course of things. We have no reason to panic about allegations that ice in the Arctic Ocean is thawing rapidly and will soon vanish altogether. As it really is, scientists say the Arctic and Antarctic ice shields are growing. Physical and mathematical calculations predict a new Ice Age. It will come in 100,000 years, at the earliest, and will be much worse than the previous. Europe will be ice-bound, with glaciers reaching south of Moscow.
Meanwhile, Europeans can rest assured. The Gulf Stream will change its course only if some evil magic robs it of power to reach the north—but Mother Nature is unlikely to do that."

That is not equal time, but it is fascinating in how the media only care about Democrats in this in such blatant coverage which I have never witnessed before. In Reagan or Bush years at least they spent time crushing Republicans, but in this GOP season they could care less.

Richard Viguerie to the Fox News Channel: Have You Joined the Enemy?
MANASSAS, Va., Jan. 3 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Richard A. Viguerie,
the author of Conservatives Betrayed: How George W. Bush and Other Big
Government Republicans Hijacked the Conservative Cause (Bonus Books, 2006),
issued the following statement in response to word that the Fox News
Channel apparently plans to bar Ron Paul from its January 6 New Hampshire
presidential debate:
"I am dismayed that the Fox News Channel apparently plans to bar Ron
Paul from its January 6 presidential debate. I have not yet declared my
support for any candidate, but I find this action inexcusable.
"Roger Ailes, the president of Fox News, is a brilliant political
operative and businessman. In his 2003 interview with Broadcasting & Cable
magazine, he said, in regard to liberal bias in the mainstream news media:
"Bias has to do with the elimination of points of view, not presenting
a point of view."
"Well said, Roger. However, that's exactly what you are doing now.
"Ron Paul is a traditional limited-government conservative in the grand
tradition of Robert A. Taft, Barry Goldwater, and Ronald Reagan. He has
astounded the political world by raising almost $20 million in campaign
funds during the last quarter of 2007. In the latest Los Angeles
Times/Bloomberg poll, he is ahead of Fred Thompson in New Hampshire. Yet
Fox News is inviting Thompson and barring Ron Paul.
"In my book, America's Right Turn: How Conservatives Used New and
Alternative Media to Take Power (Bonus Books, 2004), I devoted a chapter to
describing how Fox News ended the liberal monopoly in TV news. Perhaps I
spoke too soon.
"While Fox has ended the Democratic monopoly in TV news, it is becoming
disturbingly clear that it is perpetuating the pro-Big Government monopoly
in TV news. A Republican presidential debate without Ron Paul is a 'debate'
between Tweedledum and Tweedledee. All the other Republican candidates
would continue the Big Government policies of President George W. Bush, and
the differences between them are mostly minor and cosmetic.
"Fox News itself apparently wants to limit the GOP discussion to
variations on a Neocon theme of perpetual war for perpetual big
government."
Richard A. Viguerie pioneered ideological and political direct mail and
has been called "the funding father of the conservative movement" for his
role in helping build dozens of conservative organizations. He is the
author of Conservatives Betrayed--How George W. Bush and Other
Big-Government Republicans Hijacked the Conservative Cause (Bonus Books,
2006).

Not excluded from the debate...
January 3, 2008 - 15:36 ET by HermanoI heard last night that Paul was not excluded from the debate, only a roundtable discussion before the date. Apparently the format and time allotment does not allow for all the candidates to be involved. By the way, this was from O'Reilly with Paul's campaign chair. He was, interestingly enough, not upset about the omission.

Nick Gillespie
January 3, 2008 - 15:42 ET by sarcasmoIsn't the campaign chair (O'Reilly segment video here). AFAIK he's just a supporter, as well as being the editor in chief of Reason. And yes, the libertarians among us argue it's their property right at Fox News to do the biased thing rather than being fair or balanced, even if they sell themselves as allegedly fair and balanced. But like it or not, the point of this blog is media bias, and I've been repeatedly-reposting the days-old "panic" link for a good reason. Bias at NB, just like bias in the news media as a whole, needs to be mocked. I'm just the self-appointed mocker-in-chief in this case. :)
I do, however, have a yes or no question, now that the deafening silence has ended. Is Richard Viguerie right, or is he wrong? Fox has played a biased-hand very poorly, and IMO a big bluff's about to be called. Some major-league conservatives seem to agree with me. IF we do well tonight, and I have no idea whether or not we will, the spin we're gonna see will be funny as hell. I'll do my part to make sure of it...

You are right, Sarc...
January 3, 2008 - 16:21 ET by HermanoYou are right. Bias is the reason for this blog. The fact of the matter, however, is the Paul is going to the big dance. So he didn't get invited to the social beforehand.
Look, I am all for much of what Paul stnads for. It has been the Libertarians' mantra for many years now that we start at the local level and move up. He is doing a great deal of good with his candidacy to advance the recognition of the Libertarian Party, but he is also doing a great deal of harm with his presentation style and some of his content. If I were looking at each of the candidates and trying to decide who I would invite to a size-limited discussion, I would omit Keyes and Hunter due to their lack of wide-ranging public support. Paul would be one I would likely keep - if I could - because of his views that are away form the rest of the pack.
thanks, but the bad-news for Fox...
January 3, 2008 - 16:42 ET by sarcasmoIs that it's NOT just me, or it wouldn't be nearly as interesting. Richard Viguerie & John Sununu are both major-league conservatives, and they have been active for decades. When they echo what I've been saying about this particular media-bias, that's a sign things are going bad on this bet/possible-bluff. What we're seeing here, in slow motion, looks much like a very poorly played poker-hand. :)
The proper (and unbiased) course to take would have been to give provisional invitations to all the candidates, including Keyes, saying explicitly "your attending this forum totally-depends upon just how well you do in Iowa, therefore some of you won't be getting in." That -- unlike tipping their obviously antilibertarian-biased hand -- would have been "fair and balanced." Instead, Fox News was once-again biased, so I've slapped their hand for it along with the heavyweight conservatives, as is our right. This, depending on the outcome tonight, is potentially the biggest media bias bust of the year so far seen on NB, whether or not it's little-old me instead of the NB masthead that's doing the busting...

Flip flop what's the problem
January 3, 2008 - 15:08 ET by JayTeeThese flip flopping accusations against Romney, are very short sided. We cannot expect every politician to be 100% in line with one’s expectations. IF we get “Core” support for Immigration/Taxes/Defense and 70% support for other Conservative issues, we should be satisfied with a candidate.
The best of Bill Clinton when he was president, was that he could be influenced by the polls, by the popular opinion. What more can one expect of a politician than to be “Responsive” to the public, the Majority he represents ? I like an elected official that will FLIP when pressured by the majority opinion, or FLOP when he’s proven to be wrong. We saw this work when Amnesty was defeated last year.
Of course one always hopes it’s along the lines of what you personally think is correct, and not the opposite of what you believe.
Same thing with Rudy and his flip/flopping stance on Abortion. Is everyone forgetting that Roe vs. Wade is the Law of the Land ? Some act like the election of a previously pro-life President immediately obsoletes Roe vs. Wade.
The President we elect cannot pursue the ACLU thru the courts, or otherwise present to the Supreme Court a newly contested case on abortion, just as Hillary as President, cannot propose Medical legislation on the floor of the Senate or Congress.
Conservatives should Pick a good candidate with character and Core principles similar to your beliefs, but don’t run away from a guy that only has 70% of your core beliefs, so that the Democrat that has a mere 20% of your core platform gets a toll free lane to the election.

January 3, 2008 - 15:21 ET by JasonCThis is an eminently sensible and well-written post. The use of "flip-flopper" as an epithet (and it predates Kerry by quite a bit) has always seemed odd to me. Who wants an elected official that won't budge on an issue or perspective no matter what new evidence or circumstance comes along? The basic motivation behind this attitude seems to be that being "principled", one of those near-meaningless traits in the political milieu that is nonetheless held up as an indispensable virtue, entails little more than plain old-fashioned stubborness. Not what I look for in a leader.
Again, JayTee, great post.

Romney V. Militant Gays
January 3, 2008 - 15:40 ET by LeonIn light of Romney adviser's (Jim Talent) comments concerning Mitt's dedication to stopping the militant gays from installing their gay agenda in America, I thought it would be nice to finally ask...what is the gay agenda?
Nobody's really sure, but we hear an awful lot about it. Pam over at House Blend was kind enough to break down what the gay agenda actually is...in tangible terms. Thanks for clearing this up Pam! (LINK)
Here's a great example of a potential gay agenda:
6:00 am Gym
8:00 am Breakfast

2) Recruit all straight youngsters to our debauched lifestyle
3) Destroy all healthy heterosexual marriages
4) Replace all school counselors in grades K-12 with agents of Colombian and Jamaican drug cartels
5) Establish planetary chain of "homo breeding gulags" where over -medicated imprisoned straight women are turned into artificially impregnated baby factories to produce prepubescent love slaves for our devotedly pederastic gay leadership
6) Bulldoze all houses of worship
7) Secure total control of the INTERNET and all mass media for the exclusive use of child pornographers.

Will They Respect Them in the Morning?
January 3, 2008 - 16:18 ET by CaringwhiteguyHow long do you think it will take for all candidates and media types to get the hell out of Ft. Dodge, Iowa? The handful of candidates and the thousands of media, who have been going on and on and on and on and on and on about the importance of Iowa, will drop the state and all references to it so fast it will make your head spin. Iowa will look just like the leftover girl they picked up in some bar at closing time.
Gratefully, most Iowegians will be happy to see these parasites gone.
Caringcracker.........What ?
January 3, 2008 - 18:44 ET by JayTeeI keep hearing those Candidates LOVE Iowa, the Iowanians, and everything in that state......you trying to tell me they like NH better ? At least Rudy was honest, he prefers Florida in December.
Besides, in NY it's a state law.........if it's Winter and you're Jewish, you have to leave and go to Florida.
The Iowanians will miss all the Spending........$$'s are leaving.

Iowans
January 3, 2008 - 21:34 ET by nkviking75It's Iowans, and we earn every penny of that money. We have to put up with all the ads, all the junk mail, all the robo-calls, all the condescending MSM attention, all the whining from other states who say we're too white and too rural and the process sucks, all the whining about the cold weather, all the fringe candidates, and campaign appearances that start almost the instant the previous election is over. John Edwards is where he is in Iowa because he started organizing here shortly after the 2004 election.

"I do, however, have a yes
January 3, 2008 - 16:57 ET by ckc1227"I do, however, have a yes or no question, now that the deafening
silence has ended. Is Richard Viguerie right, or is he wrong? Fox has
played a bias-hand very poorly, and IMO a big bluff's about to be
called. Some major-league conservatives seem to agree with me.
JMR"
What is biased about excluding a guy who has
absolutely no shot? Sure, Paul has raised a lot of money, proving two
things: One, raising a lot of money doesn't mean anything in and of
itself, and two, fools and their money are soon parted.
He's
polling at 3-4% nationally. The only reason he is ahead of Fred in NH
is because Fred ticked them off when he shunned NH early on.
Interesting how they left out all the other states where Paul is
trailing Thompson despite Thompson getting in late, raising less money,
taking a hammering from the media about his trophy wife and being lazy,
etc, choosing instead to focus on the one state where he leads
Thompson, somehow believing that is proof of bias.
Paul has no
shot. He never had a shot, and eventually, the roster for these debates
has to be trimmed. What better place to start than at the bottom?
So you think Richard and I are wrong?
January 3, 2008 - 17:06 ET by sarcasmoI've repeatedly explained why the polls where nobody can lose money aren't anything remotely like accurate or scientific when it comes to Paul, but let's just wait and see how he does against the others, shall we?? He'd have "no shot" if the election were held in a tiny forum like NB, but NB's not the be-all and end-all of anything, including media bias. I'm curious why I'm the only one referencing the heavyweight conservative.
I still find it funny to see NewsBusters let their own personal bias get in the way of logic. You just literally sided with blatant media bias over the wishes of a state GOP. Is Ron Paul THAT scary? It's just amazing intellectual 'dexterity,' worthy of ANY lefty that's ever posted here, IMO, even ol' "Hater."
What I might love best about NB is some members inability to see irony until it literally slaps 'em in the faces. As of today, it's Fred who's being asked when he's gonna quit, not Ron Paul. How does it feel to see such an obviously idiotic question before anyone (well, except me -- Floridians who choose absentee can vote early!) has even voted???

Loyalty
January 3, 2008 - 19:38 ET by OldSailor88Sarc, Loyalty is an honorable thing, and I will admit that RP interested me for a nanosecond, but there comes a time when you have to embrace reality a bit. The Libertarians will not get on the ticket with RP. Why? I'll describe it the way my wife so eloquently did. "He's creepy!"
1. His public speaking voice is irritating.
2. He believes in himself and Libertarian talking points to a fault. What I mean by that is he, like you, will absolutely not hear any other points of view. All who disagree are idiots, and you and he talk to the people that disagree with you in that tone constantly.
He's made a good run, and gotten his point of view out there, but it's over. He's raised a lot of money, but it's not hard to get money out of 35 year old single men who go to work and then return to their room in the basement of Mom's house. I know. That's mean. But those guys and college students looking for a cause is all he's got, and that just won't do. So, Sarc, who's your second choice?
Ecce potestas casei!
I'm still amused
January 4, 2008 - 02:40 ET by sarcasmoWhen you employ the very tactics you accuse me of in the SAME MESSAGE as the accusations, it's too funny. I think I'll savor that & the bust of Fox's obvious fibbin' bias for a while instead of answering you, since any questions about droppin' out should clearly go to Rudy tonight like-it-or-not, and your comment self-destructs intellectually if left on its own. Just because you resent my ability to take conservatives on here doesn't mean I'm abusive when I score an obvious slam-dunk bias-bust, as I just did on Faux "News"! And other outfits are taking-note of the bias, anyway. But thanks for trying!! :)

January 3, 2008 - 17:36 ET by sarcasmoAn interesting article about the Paul campaign's "quiet game" strategy. I tend to think in terms of poker these days as I play more of that, but I love both games. I believe that learning to play a good game of chess teaches kids how to think properly.

January 3, 2008 - 21:06 ET by Clear thinkerEarlier today I was watching one of the cable news channels (I'm 90% sure it was Fox) and they had a short segment where they visited a few campaign offices that were located in the same building in Iowa. They would show people manning the phones in each of the headquarters.
When they got to Huckabees headquarters and showed people working the phones, I recognized two of the young women on the phone bank. I recognized these two from a documentary I watched recently about Fred Phelps and his weird church. You know, that's the church that would go to Military funerals and protest calling our soldiers evil. Anyway, both women are F. Phelps daughters! This is not good if Huckabee realy considers himself a Christian, because Fred Phelps and his crew are definately NOT Christian!

Speaking of identity politics and religion...
January 3, 2008 - 21:46 ET by nkviking75...a short AP story appearing in the Mason City (IA) Globe-Gazette notes that Romney is getting a lot of contributions from Mormons and spending a lot of money on Mormon companies like Marriott and Jet Blue. In fairness, the Des Moines Marriott is a major convention facility there.
Just sayin'...
