Assassination
December 27, 2007 - 10:51 ET by iveseenitallIt will be quite interesting to see how the assassination in Pakistan will play out here. It probably won't be long before the "liberals" start to blame President Bush or the Republican candidates. I already heard Ackerman of New York mention Iraq in connection with this. Sheeze!

December 27, 2007 - 11:14 ET by KC Mulville(I'm answering for myself, not for R2P.) I also take it for granted that initial reports are almost always wrong. I don't question that Bhutto is dead, but so much depends on the assassin. Was it a pro-Musharraf militarist? Was it an ex-Taliban or al-Qaeda? Drudge reported that Musharraf was at her bedside when she died. Was that true? Was it trumped up? We don't know anything certain yet, and I'll bet various groups will blame others, exploiting the moment.
We know nothing, at the moment. Once the assassin is identified, and observers are confident who did this, then the story will sort itself out. It's way too soon to respond.

December 27, 2007 - 11:59 ET by Right2thePointThe death is confirmed by multiple sources enough to have no doubt on that, it's the details , some of which I have already heard corrected more than once on smaller details.
The news is out. Now is the time to sit back and wait for it all to shake out and see how it plays out.
Idle speculation at this point will not change anything and it is likely that three days from now the whole story could have a different look.

December 27, 2007 - 11:40 ET by Airforce_5_Oal Qaeda will be the one behind. They have made threats against her. They are looking to destablize the Government there. Theories will fly accross the wires that it was President Musharraf or the US fault but Musharraf has more to lose by her death. Riots and her supporters will come after him and blame him while the war lords and al Qaeda sit in lawless area of Pakistan and wait.
Time to drop some bombs I believe.

Best Story of 2007
December 27, 2007 - 11:04 ET by BruzillaThis story gets my nomination: http://www.baltimore...
In addition to believing that "within the lifetimes of his two cats" all of Gore's dire predictions of global warming are going to come true, and many of the Red areas of the country will be swamped or left barren, he also sees that this great upheaveal will be the salvation of the Democrats!
Putting aside the fact that the Earth has already seen an increase in ocean heights that equals what Gore is predicting, and we haven't seen even an appreciable area of a beach go under yet alone a whole coastal area, this idiot thinks that if you drown all the God fearing Republicans or let them die from dehydration, that all will be well with the country. The USA will become a Liberal Utopian environment where he can do all the drugs he wants, abortion will never be challenged, and the environment will always get the respect it deserves. He seems to completely overlook the fact that if you wipe out the folks who are generating the revenues to make all this happen... it ain't going to happen.
It's almost sad that his view of the coming wrath of global warming is so delusional. How fun would it be to watch him try to round up all his forest fairies and get them to stop hitting the bong and get some work done before the utopian society collapses under the weight of it''s own excesses.

On a warmer note, Dave
December 27, 2007 - 11:10 ET by bassndudeOn a warmer note, Dave Lindorff, has out done himself with a commentary published in the Baltimore Chronicle and Sentinel. The title?
"Global Warming Will Save America from the Right...Eventually".
Rather catchy, dont you think? What he is saying is that the Red states will become inundated or drought stricken and uninhabitable. Not considering that we may move to the enlightened neighborhoods, (where he resides, I assume), he instead writes, bold is mine...
"There will be much work to be done to help the earth and its residents—human and non-human—survive this man-made catastrophe, and we can’t have these future refugee troglodytes, should their personal disasters still fail to make them recognize reality, mucking things up again.
It should be considered acceptable, in this stifling new world, to say, “Shut up. We told you this would happen.”
Now is this the party that preaches tolerance...or what?
I guess this is licnese to tell SF and LA, after the next earth quake, "Shut up. We told you this would happen." Is this right Dave?

December 27, 2007 - 11:19 ET by OldSailor88I ran into this article while perusing Drudge today. According to the writer, Dave Lindorff, global warming is going to save the world from us conservatives. As the sea level rises, we're going to be drowned and blue states will prevail.
"So the future political map of America is likely to look as different as the much shrunken geographical map, with much of the so-called “red” state region either gone or depopulated.
There is a poetic justice to this of course. It is conservatives who are giving us the candidates who steadfastly refuse to have the nation take steps that could slow the pace of climate change, so it is appropriate that they should bear the brunt of its impact."
The interesting part is at the bottom of the article. It seems Mr. Lindorff is the co-author of, "a well-regarded book on impeachment, The Case for Impeachment." The book describes the legal case for impeaching President Bush.
I'm shocked I tell you, shocked.

Of course Hillary has already claimed what good friends her and Bhutto were...blah blah blah....anybody can take it from there when it comes to her and her typical blather...why she will take care of situations like this immediately when... not if... she is President after the election.

We have hard freeze warnings for the next few nights. I do realize that does not seem like much to those in other areas of the country, but it is COLD here.
Bhutto was dumb as a post and now dead as one
December 27, 2007 - 12:11 ET by Lame CherryWith no disrespect intended to the dead, I blogged here months ago that Bhutto was not only dumb as a post but that she was tossing what would amount to nuclear bombs on a dynamite of Pakistan.
She is completely responsible for the dead in Pakistan in her return as much as those she took with her today. That is the plain reality.
Now while idiots like the McGlaughlin group WERE SAYING JUST LAST WEEK THAT Musharrif was a bad guy for clamping down........one sees why he clamped down as that nation is a cesspool of Russian sponsored Islamocommunist terrorists.
For the record, al Qaeda did this as both bin Laden and Zawahiri intend to get the Pakistan nuclear arsenal "to use on the west" as the Russians mandated that their bombs are not to be used on America ........as all uranium is able to be traced.
All this has done is made Pakistan a worse situation for America BY ANOTHER LIBERAL WOMAN meddling in politics, you can see the mirror in Hillary, Obama and Edwards as they are all liberal females as much as Huckabee and Ron Paul are too.
My concern if for the United States and for our policy Musharrif must be kept alive and in power and the McGlaughlin group can apologize for being the morons they are again.

"Homicide" bombing. Ugh.
December 27, 2007 - 13:46 ET by Hero SquadDoes it drive anyone else a little nuts that Fox News uses "homicide bombing" to describe "suicide bombing"? A homicide bombing is just a bombing. A suicide bombing is when the bomber takes his own life in the process. It sounds like they don't know what they're talking about every time I hear it.
Other than that, Fox News is great.

December 27, 2007 - 14:02 ET by JasonCI always thought of this as an attempt to linguistically re-envision the ideological approach of certain issues. Like Freedom Fries, a neologism for which our government should be eternally embarassed. I think the logic behind "homicide boming" is the precept that "suicide bombing" takes the focus off of the victims of the attack and gives the bomber some sort of authority or mastery that we shouldn't allow terrorists to have. While this may be a worhtwhile point, as you point out, it's stupid because it does nothing to distinguish is from normal bombings (ie where the bomber does not die because he/she has a remote-detonation device or what have you). Suicide bombing is a unique threat and to de-emphasize that its practitioners are more than happy to take themselves out along with the target is to provide an inaccurate analysis of it.

December 27, 2007 - 14:16 ET by JasonCBut shouldn't there be some sense of differentiation between suicide bombing and the kind of bombing that doesn't take the life of the bomber? I mean, for the sake of tactical strategies and understanding how to deal with the threat, if nothing else, is it really wise to downplay that aspect of it? Wouldn't it have been silly to pretend the Japanese kamikazees weren't willing to kill themselves in order to hit their target?

It's about being descriptive
December 27, 2007 - 14:43 ET by Hero SquadA kamikaze bomber would be a more apt description. (or should we be calling them "homicide pilots"?)
I do appreciate the idea of not giving the bomber recognition. However, simply not using the perpetrator's name seems to satisfactorily accomplish that.
"Homicide bomber" gives no indication whether or not the bomber took his or her own life. To me, that's simply synonymous with "bomber." Although at Fox, it now is synonymous with "suicide bomber." So how is it giving any less recognition to the bomber?
I'm sure Fox and the other news outlets will be aggressively trying to find out more about this bomber and motives, which is far more telling of who the bomber is than calling him a homicide or suicide bomber.
I just think Fox is overthinking this. (Then again, I probably am, too.)

Not out of some martyr-like respect to the bomber (if I must reiterate that) but to emphasize the added dangers and complications that suicide bombing presents.

There has been far too much of this coining of neologisms in the WoT, in my opinion. Similar to how people disapproved of the term "insurgents" in Iraq and wanted them to be referred to simply as "terrorists", even though there are broad and obvious differences between those who organized to fight our troops in Iraq and run-of-the-mill terrorists. This is what I mean about re-envisioning things ideologically. Isn't it just a weird inversion of the goals of PC language?

Murder-suicide attack?
December 28, 2007 - 08:51 ET by Hero SquadI heard an even more apt description on a radio report last evening: "Murder-suicide attack."
That, to me, accomplishes everything we have been discussing here. (Unfortunately, I probably returned too late to the party for anyone to notice.)

Unsane, you're one to be
December 28, 2007 - 17:41 ET by JasonCUnsane, you're one to be boasting about English comprehension, considering you took my statement completely out of context, not even bothering to complete the sentence I wrote. Yeah, that's it, I think we should just stop allowing new words and phrases into the English lexicon. If you want to swoop in and try to put me in my place with a one-sentence zinger, at least be honest about it. You can start with my reply to your barely-worth-replying-to statement about my "relentless hatred of capitalism."
Oh, and Chinese is more widely spoken, smart guy. Of course, your statement is so vague and pointless that I don't know if by "largest" you mean most commonly spoken or simply range of diction. Just letting you know.

JasonC, I am disappointed
December 28, 2007 - 23:58 ET by UnsaneJasonC, lighten the f*!k up. I was merely highlighting your upset at neologisms, because we ALL have to get used to them no matter the purpose.
I might be guilty of changing the subject but that is all.
And, my dear hyper-intellectual, Chinese is the MOST WIDELY SPOKEN LANGUAGE. When I said English is the “world’s largest language”, I meant that as literally as possible. English is the world’s largest language. For example, French has something like 100,000 words. English, last time I checked, has 750,000 words. Hence, the world’s largest language.
You were saying something about “reading comprehension”?

Most neologisms in the WoT,
December 29, 2007 - 13:33 ET by JasonCMost neologisms in the WoT, such as "Homicide Bomber" serve the singular purpose of allowing us to reinscribe accepted terms with our own ideological veneer. It's the new PC.
As to the "largest language", yes, you are correct, and I alluded to that.

December 30, 2007 - 00:35 ET by UnsaneAnd the problem with that is what? There was a neologism created in German in the 1920s that was coined for a political purpose.
This is English. Neologisms are coined for less in this language.

1) is 40

3) trolls myspace begging strangers to be his friend
I literally gave the only possible response to your post.
Anytime you try to say anything serious about politics or liberal media bias or philosophy or art or whatever, I just think of the three points above and realize, who cares what this guy thinks?
1) is 40
December 27, 2007 - 17:10 ET by MrShy1) is 40
WOW!! Wait, I'm not 20 or 25? Whatever my age is, this meeeeeans.......? Not quite sure how age validates or invalidates me or any other NB contributor, other than I might actually know more than you.
2) sells cheap thongs on the internet for a career
OMG!!! I sell clothing merchandise that includes underwear? Serious?? Hey, if thong underwear bothers you (lover of underage girls w/o shirts), then I order you to also go tar and feather my mirror-image-of-Leon brother -- another liberal moron with the same pretentious, glib take on art and music. His company cranked out underwear with their logo on them. You can thank him for the idea.
3) trolls myspace begging strangers to be his friend
Haha.
No Leon, YOU troll. That I have 23 thousand myspace friends bothers you, I know, but that's some insecurity issue you'll have to iron out on your own, in your bathroom of course :)

December 27, 2007 - 17:20 ET by LeonMr Shy,
1) No I bring up your age b/c it's funny to watch a 40 year old guy still trying to make in the music industry via myspace. Great idea. 20 years ago! But don't worry, you're in good company with every other highschool kid and college drop-out that headed to MySpace to hit the big time.
2) You sell CHEAP clothing on the internet. Thongs don't bother me at all when they're on my ladies, I just wouldn't want to sell them. Esp. not tacky cotton monstrosities over the internet. Activity number 2 that you're engaged in that every young 20 year old that doesn't want to grow up and get a real job does to pretend they're actually doing something.
3) I have 23,000 friends on myspace! haha. Oh my I'm so jealous of all your fake friends that you solicted to become your friends. In fact, guys like you are one of the reasons that MySpace is getting dominated by Facebook. People get tired of constantly being harassed by strangers such as Mr Shy begging them to be their friend, so they leave. Your message begging for friendship generally comes with all the other stripper friend invites people get on MySpace. Stripper, stripper, MrShy, stripper, call girl, stripper. What you do on MySpace is the equivalent of door to door begging. Please be my friend so I can brag to other strangers that I have more friends I don't know than they do!

1) I'm talentless yet you're almost to retirement age and you're still trying to start a music career. Nota Bene: Friends on MySpace do not equal fans. haha. Clearly if you had a talent, you would have put it to good use by age 40 and you wouldn't be begging for internet friends. It will definitely be sweet though once you start collecting social security, you won't have to sell crappy thongs anymore and you can just focus on your music.
2) I have no idea who the Professor is. I don't know any posters on this blog in real life. Only as Orange Names on a screen.
3) The Paula Abdul comment was gold.
4) I go on the internet for fun. You go on the internet to try to make money to survive. You reek of desperation. How many MrShy thongs did you sell this Christmas season? All the Wall Street analysts said it was a hot ticket item. Lines around the block to get them. People morgatging their homes! Pure mayhem!!
5) All of your attacks against me are speculation b/c you actually know nothing about me. Meanwhile, all of my attacks against you are true and people can see for themselves b/c you put yourself out there. Interesting decision. Recently a mass of dolphins beached themselves in Australia. As soon as this mass of beached dolphins was discovered, an even larger mass of environmentalist rushed to the scene to push said dolphins back onto the sea so they could swim away.
Now, for being such fervent believers in evolution, why did they not leave the dolphins alone on the beach? Maybe they were trying to "walk" away from the sea and these knuckleheads kept pushing them back in... I'm just saying..:-) Have a Happy New Year!!

They of course read ones which praised mob rule and praised Bhutto, but the one which got the big exposure of "just a letter" which was supposed to represent the mail said:
Since President Musharrif has had a relationship with George Bush Pakistan HAS HAD MORE TERRORISM.
Only took 12 hours and the BBC once again sinks to lows in blaming George Bush for terrorism.
ABC on Nightline though took a different approach in repeating the obvious that al Qaeda assassinated Bhutto, but swerved into that America in the communist State Department has cut Musharrif adrift as he is not credible..........and then they OUTED THE NEW HEAD OF THE PAK military as American trained and CIA backed.
Yeah that is really a good idea in telling the world our best asset in Pakistan.
If the Justice Department is gleaning this site for terrorists, please will you show some moxy and arrest Brian Ross and the idiots at the State Department as they have no business leaking information that will get American assets murdered.

Anniversary
December 28, 2007 - 01:29 ET by UnsaneTen years ago tonight, I remember well watching Jacksonville getting destroyed by the Broncos, avenging their embarrassing loss of the season before. The Broncos killed them 42-17.
And that was the beginning of the Broncos amazing Super Bowl run.
The way my boys are playing now...well...it seems like longer than 10 years...

Un, Un, Un. Why did you have
December 28, 2007 - 08:16 ET by Roger the ShrubberUn, Un, Un. Why did you have to bring up that playoff run? Now you have me all depressed. My Steeler had just beaten the dreaded Patsies by a point, and now had only one home game against a wild-card Bronco team in the way between the Black and Gold and another Super Bowl.
Your damn Broncos made Kordell Stewart look like, well, an even WORSE QB than he was. I think he threw 3 int's. We couldn't stop Terrel Davis, either!
Another Steeler homegame choke during the early Cowher era, and that loss hurt even more than when your dam Broncos beat Bubby Brister's Steelers by one point in '89. Merril Hoge was a beast that day!
Cry me three rivers
December 29, 2007 - 00:06 ET by UnsaneOh, cue the violins!!! Your Steelers beat my Broncos in the AFC Championship in January 2006, AND beat a 13-3 Bronco team in the 1984 playoffs in the first round, AND dethroned the AFC Champion Broncos in the 1978 playoffs!!!
By the way Kordell Stewart overturned the ball 5 times. He also did some fumbles.
I respect and admire the fact you are a Steelers fan, for you are not a fan of the Chiefs, Raiders or Chargers. :-)

December 29, 2007 - 00:17 ET by UnsaneFor once, a good commercial...AND I AM NOT SEEING IT!!! I may as well be in Korea!!!
(By the way, Tim Tebow is indeed Da Man. He is going to be SCARY next year, especially if you are an opposing SEC team!)

Timmy a force of nature.
Not a bad year...and I'm not that greedy of a Blonde that I insist on 4 in a row.
Note to danbo....LSU better beat OSU. The SEC rules.

That 1984 game was a shining moment in Mark Malone's unspectacular career! If I remember corrrectly, Dan Marino destroyed the Steelers a week later.
The 1978 Steelers team has been argued to have been one of the greatest teams of all-time, so no shame there! I believe your guys beat my guys the year before, that year the Broncs went on to lose to Dallas in the Super Bowl.
I never thought of this before, but I guess the Steelers and Broncs have faced each other in the playoffs ALOT!
Playoff history
December 30, 2007 - 00:43 ET by UnsaneIndeed, they have. The very first playoff victory my Broncos ever had was against the Steelers, as you noted, in 1977.

I'm learning a lot more
December 28, 2007 - 06:27 ET by Jack BauerI'm learning a lot more about Benazir Bhutto from Debbie Schlussel, and it's not pretty.
Including information about her possible involvement in the murder of her own brother -- who himself, was not a nice man. In fact, the Bhuttos seem a bad lot all round.
Much of this supports the postings of Lame Cherry here.
