Presidential Race: The war for the soul of the Republican Party was won in 1980 by Ronald Reagan. Presidential candidates who want to re-wage the conflict in 2008 will only weaken the GOP against the Democrats' nominee.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Related Topics: Election 2008
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the aftermath of Vietnam, Watergate and a Jimmy Carter presidency that rendered America an economic and foreign policy basket case, Republicans discovered a tried-and-true recipe for electoral success.
They would stand for three sets of principles:
• Lowering high taxes and stemming the growth of government in order to revive the private economy, lower inflation and interest rates, and generate jobs.
• Rebuilding U.S. defenses and unashamedly confronting Soviet expansionism with the goal of winning the Cold War rather than learning to live with communism.
• Reasserting traditional values in the aftermath of the 1960s social revolution, including opposing abortion and smut, especially through the appointment of federal judges holding strict-constructionist views.
Overnight, the GOP was transformed. Losing the 1976 election with Gerald Ford as its standard bearer, it was a scandal-plagued "dime store Democrat" party, backing detente with an ever-more-aggressive Russia, imposing wage and price controls, and appointing to the Supreme Court liberals such as Roe v. Wade author Harry Blackmun and the high court's current most left-leaning member, John Paul Stevens.
Under candidate Reagan in 1980, it suddenly represented a vast cross-section of the country:
• Beleaguered businesses, big and small alike (and those they employ).
• Voters who feared the geopolitical consequences if America didn't soon take the "kick me" sign off its back, as the late Jeane Kirkpatrick so eloquently put it.
•The legions of Catholics, evangelicals and others who deplored America's sinking into a Hollywood-inspired moral sewer.
More than a quarter-century later, sustaining the Reagan coalition remains the recipe for Republican victory in a national election.
The candidate most likely to energize all the segments of the Republican grass roots against a Democratic opponent next year is one committed to making the Bush tax cuts permanent and fixing the entitlement spending crisis with free-market solutions, who insists on winning in Iraq and clearly sees Iran for the nuclear threat it is, and who would reverse the radical ACLU mentality on the federal bench.
Yet most of the GOP presidential hopefuls have refused to act as across-the-board Reaganites. There would be nothing, for instance, to stop a one-time Southern Baptist minister from claiming the mantle of Reaganism. But erstwhile man of the cloth and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, whose appeal among evangelicals has raised him to within striking distance in Iowa, has continually attacked the Club for Growth, a major champion of conservative economic policies, as the "Club for Greed."
Calling capitalists Scrooges is straight out of the liberal Democratic playbook. A more helpful retort from Huckabee would be to address the Club's concerns about his approving an income-tax surcharge in Little Rock.
Former Sen. Fred Thompson, on the other hand, has managed to gain the endorsement of the National Right to Life Committee (a key stamp of approval from social conservatives) while at the same time espousing the boldest of economic solutions on both Social Security and tax reform.
Thompson would solve Social Security's insolvency by giving Americans voluntary control of their own personal retirement accounts. He'd keep the Bush tax cuts, and he announced last weekend that he'd let taxpayers choose between the present, complex tax code and a simplified system with only two rates: 10% and 25%.
The movie star politician also proposes a Reaganesque rebuilding of our Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines.
The Republicans running for the 2008 presidential nomination are often accused of being unconvincing actors in repeatedly invoking the name of Ronald Reagan. Funny how the one real actor among them seems to understand what Reaganism is.

NBC has rubbed off on the NFL with the National Anthem skipped on the ESPN broadcast.
Lastly, on the sports report thread, I want Newsbusters to go back and look at my blog posted here exclusively on how to beat New England. I said pressure Tom Brady and beat up Randy Moss. Gee whiz on Sunday night Andy Reid had the Eagles do EXACTLY that and would have won the game if the Eagles had not stupidly thrown a long pass which the Patriots picked off.
There was no reason to throw that long strike as taking time off the clock was mandatory and the Eagles could move the ball.
It did though have John Madden who I have been disgusted with lately lament, "Well the Eagles have shown the NFL how to beat the Patriots."
If John Madden didn't know the glaring weaknesses in New England he should be replaced as it was posted here weeks ago how easily it would be to defeat that team.
Worst part was Madden saying when Brady was running up the scores that it was the defense of the other team who were responsible for stopping him. I guess Brad Childress and the Vikings running out the clock on New York and not going for a touchdown have not heard the Madden excuse about piling on.

A large group of Muslim leaders wrote a letter to "Christendom" seeking "peaceful coexistence and mutual undrstanding."
So what do American Christian leaders do? Do they say, yeah, OK, we'll peacefully co-exist, as long as you don't kill us for not converting to Islam?
No, like good little PC acolytes, they apologize and ask forgiveness! If you don't believe me, go read the whole thing
but here are a couple of excerpts:
After 138 Muslim leaders last month wrote an open letter to Christendom calling ostensibly for peaceful coexistence and mutual understanding, self-proclaimed Christian leaders and other celebrity Christians took the bait.
Among more than 100 theologians, ministry leaders and prominent pastors, signing the letter were Jim Wallis, president of Sojourners, Rick Warren, senior pastor of Saddleback Church and Leith Anderson, president of the National Association of Evangelicals.
"If we can achieve religious peace between these two religious communities, peace in the world will clearly be easier to attain," they wrote. They called for interfaith dialogue to build relations that will "reshape" the two communities to "genuinely reflect our common love for God and for one another." And they asked the Muslim leaders to forgive Christians for their sins – including the Crusades and "the excesses of the war on terrorism."

Luke 6:27-36
[27] "But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, [28] bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. [29] If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. If someone takes your cloak, do not stop him from taking your tunic. [30] Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. [31] Do to others as you would have them do to you.
[32] "If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' love those who love them. [33] And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' do that. [34] And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' lend to 'sinners,' expecting to be repaid in full. [35] But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. [36] Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

November 27, 2007 - 18:52 ET by professor truthNo soldier in Iraq is defending my freedom, unless you want to state that my teaching is resulting in your high standard of living. There's no freedom for those under occupation. The Iraq war was a criminal war by any international standard. You cannot name a single Iraqi who directly threatened the freedom of anyone who lived in the US.
The US is a hated occupier of Iraq and it would serve all interests if we left as quickly as possible. Today's military serves as an imperial power, having over 700 bases worldwide. It's ludicrous to believe that if there were massive Chinese military bases in the US, they would be providing freedom for US citizens. AF, you need to show an immediate cause effect relationship between soldiers in Iraq and my freedom. Actually, the war is diminishing my freedom, it's costing me thousands of dollars, it's removing valuable people who could serve the public as doctors, teachers and engineers, and it's draininng our budget of over a trillion dollars with much higher costs projected and nothing to show for all this except thousands of dead soldiers, tens of thousands of wounded and PTSD soldiers, and lot's of homeless vets. Bush and his fascists have sold the military down the river and have privatized much of it, all with disastrous effects. Go look at the 14 traits of fascism, determined by looking at the commonalities of the fascist governments of Pinochet, Franco, Suharto,Mussolini and Hitler . Compare those to actions of the Bush administration . Draw your own conclusions.

I'll tell you what REAL freedoms Christians like me have lost over the last few years:
1. Public school rights such as a valedictorian thanking Jesus at a high school graduation, the right to hold Christmas programs in public schools, the right to organize Christian activies groups in public schools, the right to wear clothing with Christian references on it in public schools
2. The right to oppose homosexual couple benefits in the workplace

4. The right to life before we are born
And many more - none of which are due to conservative efforts...

A compassionate occupation???
November 27, 2007 - 19:39 ET by professor truth4 million displaced people, over a million dead Iraqis?? The inspections were keeping Saddam in check. There was another compassionate occupation of Iraq that occurred when the British displaced the Ottoman Empire around 1914 give or take a few years. Sir Stanley Maude, who stated "we come here not as conquerers but as liberators". The British occupied Iraq for around 20 years of compassion. There was an uprising around 1921 or so where Iraqis revolted against their compassionate occupiers. I assume Winston Churchhill is your hero so I'll give you a little quote from him. regarding Iraqis, he said,"I see no problem with using poison gas against uncivilized people." Paul Bremer went in and suspended ALL DEMOCRATIC ELECTIONS, he then unilaterally wrote economic directives to privatize all industries except oil(which was not done in order to avoid massive uprisings)
and allow all foreign corporations to extract 100% of their profits from Iraq and also wrote that "all foreign corporations are exempt from any laws", Sound pretty compassionate to you, Six string?
There was controversy over whether to privatize the oil or not. The neocons wanted it privatized in order to break OPEC's chokehold by ramping up production of Iraqi oil. Philip Carroll of Shell Oil didn't want this and his comment in response to some neocon saying that privatization is a "no brainer", was"yeah, you'd have no brain if you privatized the oil. Carroll wanted Iraq to have the oil so that oil prices could remain high and profits would stay huge.

November 27, 2007 - 19:10 ET by bassndudeProfessor. The Iraqi war is only a continuation of hostilities that begain during the occupation of Kuwait, (by Iraq). A cease fire was signed, and terms for that cease fire were violated time and time again. Iraq never honored the terms that were agreeded to, by both sides, and the UN. The UN was involved from the beginning. The Security Councel voted and the up shot was that Iraq was invaded again. This time with a diffrent goal. A new goverment. It was not illegal by any means. Some were aginst it, sure. But only because it got in their pocket book. There were billions in oil money going to corrupt UN officials and other goverments, (Russian, Syrian and Lebenon), not to mention HAMAS and FATAH. Pull your head out, "teacher".

there was no UN consent for invasion
November 27, 2007 - 19:44 ET by professor truthand no security council vote. The US used the violations of UN resolutions to unlawfully attack Iraq. The UN charter is very specific regarding conditions under which invasions are lawful. There was never a security council vote authorizing the invasion. If UN resolution violations gives a nation just cause for invading another nation, then Israel could lawfully be attacked since it is in continuous violations of UN resolutions.
Yes there was prof. Look it
November 27, 2007 - 19:46 ET by bassndudeYes there was prof. Look it up. Im not wasting my time posting it for you. Your international law and UN resolutions need work. Put down the chemistry book. We are not a bunch of kids in here. You have the chance to learn something. Take it.

"Proffesor"
November 28, 2007 - 01:03 ET by RESTLESS 1You have on more than one occasion stated that the President is a war criminal and acted on Iraq with no consent from congress. Actually, both chambers of Congress voted to grant authority to President Bush to go to war with Iraq.
Whether or not the U.N. security council gave authority is still in doubt due to ambiguous wording in resolution 1441. Resolution 678 in 1990, the U.S. maintains, gave the authority needed in that Iraq didn't meet cease fire requisites stated in resolution 687. There is no compelling evidence that we even needed it.
That's all for the history lesson today.
700 Bases
November 27, 2007 - 19:10 ET by Six String SpiffAnd just WHY do we have those bases? Think REAL hard before you bark again. Do you think we barged in and forced them to build one? After re-reading that utterly STUPID post of yours, I have come to the conclusion that you are a blind pacifist who does not understand his freedoms and how they came about.

Generals who disagree with Bush get knocked out of the military. G. Shinseki told how many troops would be needed and got bumped out as one example. There are many military enlisted men and officers who oppose the war.

Quit evading the subject, I am capable of answering all yet there is no point, you cannot, you must stop responding. If you feel Gen Petraeus was not running the show, explain Petraeus-Crocker to those reading.

November 27, 2007 - 21:38 ET by Airforce_5_Ohow do you come to this?
The US is a hated occupier of Iraq and it would serve all interests if we left as quickly as possible.
As someone who has a working knowledge of this the Iraqis do want us there, it is the insurgent, the illegal combatant insurgent, the terrorist that dosen't want us there.
How is it you don't read what I wrote about the soldier in Iraq defending you freedom? By the sheer fact that they are in the military they defend your freedoms. Can you wrap you mind around that concept?
The only thing you should feel when shooting insurgents is the rifle recoil.
AF, would you like to be occupied by a foreign nation?
November 27, 2007 - 21:51 ET by professor truthIf US citizens formed a resistance against occupation, we would be called 'terrorists' by the occupiers. Nazi Germany had French collaborators. The French resistancee were considered terrorists by the Vichy government. No Iraqi has ever threatened anyone on US soil so any war that is killing 99% Iraqis is unjustified. Nobody in Iraq is fighting for freedom in the US, although many may believe this, it is complete nonsense and has no factual supporting evidence.
If soldiers went to New Zealand and started killing the population, these soldiers aren't fighting for anyone's freedom. They are fighting a war of occupation in Iraq that has absolutely nothing to do with my freedom, and there isn't a single piece of evidence to suggest otherwise.
