Saturday Sports Open Thread

Wow Razorbacks! Was that an exciting game or what?

And how 'bout those Aggies?

The Huskers have apparently said goodbye to Callahan. Natalie wants you back in Danville anyway, Jackie!

On to Saturday, this could be a fun day beginning with V-Tech at Virgina in less that two hours. Sweet!

Can Kentucky beat Tennessee? I think so.

Connecticut at WV could also be interesting.

Finally, this evening's matchup between Missouri and Kansas could be delicious.

The best news: my wife and daughter are spending the entire day at the salon; I got the poolwork done yesterday as well as my workout, so; I'm READY for some late season with much meaning college football. How 'bout you?

All I can say is GO

All I can say is GO MU!

Whoda thunk at the beginning of the season that this game would mean so much?  It's amazing how many fans there are now.  They really come out of the woodwork to join the bandwagon.

All I can say is, "Welcome.  Hop on, sit down and buckle up.  It's bound to be a wild ride!"

Hawaii Did It!

For the 3rd week in a row, the Rainbow Warriors won a game they weren't supposed to win, as Heisman candidate QB Colt Brennan threw for 5 TDs, thus setting a new NCAA record for career QB touchdowns. Hawaii improves to 11-0 and gained some respect.

Undefeated

If both Hawaii and KU go undefeated for the year, they should play in the national championship game.  Period.  Last year, the Boise State Broncs were the real national champions!

<insert witty signature here>

... and personally

I would rather go back to the old bowl system rather than this national BCS championship mess they have now.  The new system creates an incentive to cheer for both Pac-10 and Big-10/11 losses so that the top team in conference are not good enough to go to the "championship" game, but still good enough to play in the Rose Bowl.  That is just not right.

I'm perfectly content with not having a "definitive" national champion and arguing about it all year with my buddies.  That gives us something to do after the Final Four and before August baseball.

(And yes, I know that many decades ago, the Rose Bowl did include non-Pac and non-Big 10 teams.)

<insert witty signature here>

Unfortunately, Hawaii does

Unfortunately, Hawaii does not have a shot unless the other contenders have 2 or more losses, and Ohio State has already completed their regular season at 11-1 (against a pathetic schedule).

Hawaii's best bet is for WVU to lose to UConn and Kansas to lose to Mizu who then loses to Oklahoma. In order to avoid Hawaii, the BCS would have to elevate a 2 loss team into the championship game, or a 1 loss KU team that didn't play in their conference championship game.

I would love to see it happen, because it would put the BCS into a quandary and bring us a step closer to a playoff system.

When asked if he went to war with Iraq to derail the impeachment vote: “I don’t think any serious person would believe that any President would do such a thing." - President Clinton (Dec 1998).

A Real Playoff System

What we need is a realistic playoff system, but I doubt it'll ever happen.

Sorry Doc

Sorry Doc, wrong.  If wishes were fishes....

Today is big rivalry day.  I'm hoping to grant Rick's wish of UF vs. FSU forcing old Bobby B's retirement this afternoon.  It'll be a hard fought game.

what a whacked season

based on that if anything can muddy the waters it probally will

What do you think if Hawaii plays LSU (or the Kansas-Missouri loser) in a bowl and wins?  A disputed championship again?

Yes, you are even more annoying than Blonde.  the EYE

Hawaii and LSU

Hawaii and LSU actually had a common opponent this season (Louisiana Tech as I recall). LSU would probably complain that they beat Tech by a wider margin than Hawaii did. As I recall, Hawaii only beat Tech by a couple of points.

hi deldolemonte

my question assumes a head to head in a bowl game (non-championship)

would have been nice if Hawaii had played a top ten team (same for Ohio)

Yes, you are even more annoying than Blonde.  the EYE

GO DAWGS

Seeing how the Heels-Dook game is meaningless, I'll be rooting for the KY Wildcats to knock Tenn out of the SEC championship game and let the Dawgs in. After what I saw last night the Dawgs can beat LSU. I don't think the Vols can.

Blonde will be happy that I am pulling for the Gators. I want them to send Bobby Bowden into retirement.

As for Clem's son and that other team from South Carolina-WHO CARES. It is shame that one of them has to win. If your ex-wife and her lawyer jump off a building at the same time who hits the ground first? WHO CARES.

I guess I'll be pulling for Kansas. This is based on them being the better basketball school.

Who ever can guess the next coach to get the axe will win a CD with Sean Penn singing carols in Spanish.

Now as for this Thursday night's game between the Cowboys and Packers if you can get it on radio listen to that. This past week, Bryant Gummball was doing the play by play for the NFL network. Boy was he sorry. If it wasn't for Collinsworth doing the color it would have stunk up the whole TV.

Real Dawgs

Sorry, but the real Dawgs play football in the Pac-10.

...and I'm a Cowboys fan and get the NFL Network!

I watched the Dallas game

I watched the Dallas game on a local channel visiting relatives in Dallas. Yes, that was snow early on, and no, I didn't see any myself.

The voice of Phil Simms gets annoying after some time of listening to his Kentucky accent.

I am not a Fla St fan, but what good does it do for College FB if Bowden retires? BTW LSU will be smoking next week, pity the team that plays them :-)

The Real Action

is in the Pacific Northwest where the mighty Huskies will feast on the lowly Wazzu Cougars.

Woof!

(And it is interesting that the whole NB staff only has one wife and daughter.  But I guess having the whole NB staff cleaning the pool makes it go faster.  My question:  Why send your family to a spa when you can just turn up the temperature on the pool and use a modified leafblower to make bubbles?)

<insert witty signature here>

Dr.

Dr,

I know you're being facetious and understand that posts by "NB Staff" don't mean that we all got together and collaborated. I do most of the open threads, and all of the Saturday sports ones. I thought most people knew that by now.

As for my wife and daughter, they are heading to the salon, not the spa, although centuries ago, there may not have been much of a difference. :-)

Finally, you must not have a pool, for it would take days and an amazing expense to heat so much water this time of year to the 102 degrees normally found in a hot tub. As cold as the water is now in my pool (about 55 degrees), it could take two-plus hours for me to heat just my spa.

Of course, that raises an entirely different question I will answer if asked. :-) ns

Cornhusker Patrician

This is teasing, but man I wonder how many Nebraska folks go to the salon, do the pool and workout. Is nice to see that patricians come from all areas of the United States in America being a land of affluence where all can rise above corn husking.

As for me I was feeding my pet chickens corn I husked this year........I learned that 800 ears of corn on average fill a 55 gallon barrel. It is wonderful being a squire and listening to pheasants cackle as you pick corn and your setter looks at you like, "Why are we picking corn when there are birds to chase".

College football has lost a great interest for me now until the small colleges start the playoffs.........while it is interesting to watch North Dakota starting to do well in playing with the big schools..........my only interest now is watching Ohio State loose.

I still would like those communists at the college ranks to approve a national playoff system like the NFL so a real champion could be crowned..........what a thrill it was last year watching Idaho doing what it did.........as much as watching LSU get waxed by a "lesser team".

Hopefully the Cornhuskers will find a coach as I miss their massive power running offenses adding depth to the NFL.

*HIC IACET ARTORIVS REX QVONDAM REXQVE FVTVRVS

Spa

Maybe there is a little bit too much spa-going in Nebraska lately, which explains their rapid decline.  I mean, how tough is a 300 pound offensive guard who has a nice manicure and baby soft skin?  Ain't no longhorn gonna be 'fraid of that!

<insert witty signature here>

Dr. Liberty, I would make

Dr. Liberty, I would make one correction. It isn't the 300 lb. linemen with the baby soft skin. Nebraska imported a 200 lb. coach with flawless cuticles from the state of California that tried to convert our corn-fed sasquatches into ninnies. Operation "Metro Purge" is now underway.

LC

LC,

Well, this patrician lives in Northern California where folks spend a lot of time at salons, spas, and health clubs -- thank god!

As for Nebraska, I was actually quite surprised to see the fitness level of people there when I dropped my son off as a freshman. I learned a lot about chauvinistic stereotypes and generalizations on that trip.

One last thing about spas in Nebraska: as my son is an athlete, he spends a lot of time in the athletes' co-ed hot tub after workouts. The women's volleyball team -- National Champs! -- normally finishes their workout at around the same time as the track team.

Need I say more? :-) ns

What all tall girls MUST have to BE tall!!!

The women's volleyball team?

Noel, you know what they say about tall girls, right?  :-)

Res tantum valet quantum vendi potest.

Corn per barrel=800---- Birds per barrel=next week?

Who would count the ears in a barrel, and why?

As far as LSU getting waxed, I am pretty sure the only team waxing anyone yesteday was Delaware and Colorado. Also one more thing, if the N-umbskulls hire another Callahan, dont be suprized if they get waxed some more next year,,,,,,,really what were they thinking?

Let's go Buckeyes!! Things

Let's go Buckeyes!! Things keep looking better and better for Buckeye fans!! That LSU loss was huge, and it may prove to be the difference maker as it relates to OSU climbing to #2.

The winner of the MU/KU game will have to get past OU.......and I don't see that happening. OU already beat MU once, and Kansas didn't play them.

If WVU stumbles....... we might see a 2 loss team in the national championship game!!

OSU is almost a shoe in,

OSU is almost a shoe in, unless Kan or Mizzu can do an increadable feat. This is why the Big 10 has such a huge advantage over the other conferences.

Road to the Sugar

Everyone seems to think Ga can beat LSU? All I can say is after yesterday, the pressure is off of LSU. Ga may like to be in the SEC championship game, but I think they finish higher in the pols at the end of the year (like LSU last year) if they dont go. Anyone who watched the game yesterday, knows LSU lost that game in the first half. LSU offence did not take advantage of the good field position that their defence gave them, and by the 4th both defenses were beat. I think the world of Miles, but he called way too many passes (22) in the first half. I can understand why, Flynn was very good in the 2nd half, If we run the ball 12 more times in the first, I think we win. LSU had about a doz opportunities to turn the game around, but the Razorbacks were up to the task.

I had been worried about Ark ever since last year, we won a hard fought game last year, and in the SEC it very hard to beat teams consecetive years. LSU next year, Auburn, Fla (if Tebow stays) and maybe Alabama. Sorry if I sound like a whinner, but rooting for LSU this year has been excruciatingly unbearable. Let's see what the rest of the season brings us, been the best ever (other then ND) I can remember. The NFL is a pitiful shell of the collage game this year.

Va Tech & UVA

One had Michael, one had cheerleader Katie Couric!!  We're both tortured dogs!!    I'm 30 miles from C'ville-but watching grandkids so son & oldest grand son could go see!!  Close right now!!  One ggod thing is Couric is no longer a cheerleader here!!

Texas at Texas A&M

This game was a lot more one-sided that the score shows. A&M dominated time of possession, yardage (By just about a 2:1 ratio), first downs and just about everything else. Stephen McGee looked like a pro and Colt McCoy looked like a dud (1 INT, 2 fumbles). 13 of UT's 30 points came in the final 10 minutes or so, and 7 more came off of a 91 yard kick return.

Now, I'm not a diehard Longhorn or Aggie fan (I just have plenty of friends at both schools, and lean somewhat slightly towards A&M), so I mainly watch and cheer for a good game. While the outcome was pleasing and the score reflected a close game, it was as much a blowout as those 50-20 UT victories a few years back. Give me last year's 12-7 A&M victory, minus the violent late hit on Colt McCoy with 7 seconds left, any day.

Coaching Question

Can someone explain to this dunce why that college coach was wearing some sort of dress on the sidelines yesterday? It looked like something Dorothy Lamour wore in "The Road to Bali".

Answers

1. He lost a bet.

2. He thought the pizza was "delivery".

3. He's the Iranian graduate assistant.

4. It really WAS Dorothy Lamour.

The Rocky Mountain Collegian: Illustrating Idiocy

A Hawaiian Connection

OK, I got the real story about this-it was the Colorado linebacker coach, Brian Cabral, who as it turns out lived in the same Hawaiian town I grew up in (and is the same age!), paying tribute to his senior linebacker Jordon Dizon, who finished his CU career 3rd all-time in tackles. Dizon is from the island of Kauai.

Cabral wore a Polynesian lava lava, which is similar to a kilt, and also a lei that Dizon's Mom gave him. He had been a linebacker on the CU 1976 Big 8 title team, and later won a Super Bowl ring with the 1986 Chicago Bears. He wore the lava lava on the sidelines only once previously, when CU played in the Aloha Bowl.

Sorry, no pictures!

I'm going to my bed room

I'm going to my bed room and have a good cry. Damn those Vols. They are the luckiest team in the world.

Baring a total collapse in the 2nd half it looks like Tebow will lock up the Heisman. McFadden might have impressed the clowns on ESPN but he didn't prove a thing to me last night night other than he is good at fumbling.

Looks like the Dawgs are going to win. Next stop-an at large BSC Bowl bid. We can say farewell to the great Larry Munson. He will probably the Dawgs bowl game and then retire.

Congrats to VA Tech. They are heading to Jacksonville to play BC in the ACC championship. Second time is a charm.

Well onto the bed room and sulk. Damn them Vols.

BAWAHAHAHAHAHA.

I think we just tripled the spread.

5 Touchdowns from the Ironman today.

BTW.....Tebow now has 3 more season rushing TD's than ANY of the rb's who've won the Heisman.

Tell me again how he doesn't deserve it because he's only a sophomore?

Finally...the SEC is insane....4 OT's?  Wow, nice try, Kentucky.

Sorry....Rick.  But maybe Bobby's a goner.

And yeah, I'm cheering for Mizzou....family reasons, doncha know.

How many seniors are on the UF team?  There wasn't much said during the portions of the game i saw.  You know the usual last game here at home stuff.....

GoHunter08

Bruce

This was the final game for 5 seniors (starters) tonight.   5....that's not very many, is it?

Andre (Bubba) Caldwell is the all time receiver for Florida, tho....that's going to be a loss for us.

It was an excellent game.  We scored on our first 5 possessions.  The first possession of the second half.....five first downs in a row...then touchdown.  Take that, brother Bowden.  "Going to hurt Tebow"....huh?

It's great to kick FSU....best feeling in the world, actually.  Makes me look forward to Monday.

Tebow deserves the Heisman about 19 ways from Sunday....most ever of everything, scoring wise for a quarterback, not to mention he's changed the game in his first year starting....but if he gets hosed, oh well.  I don't think he really cares.

They had a story on that Mike Shula tried to recruit him for 'Bama (at Christmas)....when he saw all of the Gator ornaments on the tree, he kind of knew the gig was up.  LOL.

David Gregory, do you know which damn network you lie for? ~ Uncle Jimbo, @Blackfive

i heard the recruiting

i heard the recruiting story.

The first two scores weren't on  TV here as the 4 OTs were played out before going to the Gator game

GoHunter08

Yeah, B.

They pre-empted two of Timmy's Heisman type plays for the KY-TN overtime (mostly going to a time-out)....sheesh!  A miss by FSU on the blitz (Timmy ducks)....Timmy runs it in from 25 yards out....and a perfectly passed long ball to the receiver in the very back corner of the end zone.

Fortunately, I get SEC TV....and they know we don't care about TN/KY in South Florida....so they switched over to the proper game right on time....didn't prevent aggravation, tho.

"MY end justifies THAT mean." - Shakespeare (not really)

Tebowmania!

Tebow deserves the Heisman no two ways about that!

And how great is beating FSU? There are no words.

Hey Doug

GO GATORS!

Beating FSU is almost (almost) as good as the National Championship.  Or the Heisman, for Timmy....I heard the thing he was happiest about is that Danny Wuerffel, as a former winner, has a vote....how cool is that?

David Gregory, do you know which damn network you lie for? ~ Uncle Jimbo, @Blackfive

Sweet it is

Yes! Tebow grew up a Gator fan, as you know. I think, looking tonight, that the next two years we are going to be VERY special!

Bowden said after the game he has never seen an offense like ours.

Hey Blonde

Again last night all these clowns from Arkansas were calling into SNR about McFadden. I image that Tebow has scored more TD's than a lot teams all season. What Heisman voter could deny him their vote after last night's performance. Is the Gator nation saying "Chris who?" after Tebow's season?

Here's another stike against McFadden. He is no where near leading the nation in rushing. That honor is held by Matt Forte of Tulane with over 2100 yards. His per game average is about 182 yards this season. Why don't these idiots on the sports talk shows talk about him for the Heisman. He is the best running back in the  nation. I don't think that he has fumblitis like McFadden.

I still don't think that the Vols can beat LSU.

I don't understand how Tommy Bowden, Houston Nutt and Phat Phil are rumored to be fired and Bobby is not. It is not that they don't have winning records. It is that their programs are stagnant and not making any progress.

Democracy: Three wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch.

Back at you, Rick

I watched Urby's show this a.m., & just for grins the Bobby Bowden Show.

Truly pathetic.  Woulda, coulda, shoulda. LOL. Momentum. Blah, blah, blah.

Their "play of the game"....a 60 yard field goal.

I think Timmy will be denied the Heisman because he's only a sophomore, and most everyone hates the Gators for one reason or another.  But I know he deserves it for his play THIS year, and singlehandedly changing the college game.

BTW...was it you who earlier said "Chris who"?  I thank Chris Leak every time Tim has a great play.  Chris Leak was a true leader, teacher, and mentor to young Mr. Tebow, who wouldn't be nearly as successful without the tutelage of Chris Leak.

David Gregory, do you know which damn network you lie for? ~ Uncle Jimbo, @Blackfive

No. 1

Well, it's Mizzou's turn at Number 1.  I think the rematch in San Antonio will be quite a game.

I seem to remember someone saying they were overranked at about #12 before they played (and walloped) Nebraska.

No worries, NS, we'll welcome you to the bandwagon!  :)

The Rocky Mountain Collegian: Illustrating Idiocy

Rivalry

Can't say much about the shirt and comments. Some people in every part of society (including college football) take things too far. It's enough to say that we beat KU and dashed their national title hopes. No need to bring up the ugly history such as this in this manner, though.

Time for Basketball

It is time to talk b-ball. Football is about done except for the conference championships, USC-UCLA, OR-OR State, Pitt-WV and Army-Navy. GO ARMY BEAT NAVY

My heels won the Vegas Invitational but may have lost Ty Lawson for a while. He sprained his ankle in the first 2 minutes of the BYU game. He will be re-evaulated today. Bobby Frasor is a good point guard but he is no Ty Lawson.

The Heels have 4 road games in a row begining Wednesday in Columbus with Ohio State. Then it is on to Rupp Arena on Saturday for a game with Kentucky. Both of these teams lost to lesser opponents so beating the Heels would put a feather in their caps. Then it is on the play Penn and Rutgers.

The date to remember is Feb. 8th when DOOK comes to the Dean Dome for a good old backyard whipping from the Heels.

Tim Tebow deserves the Heisman

Okay, sorry all...but I can't help it.

Here's a column from a local writer I absolutely despise (the Gator Hater) Dave Hyde

But I must agree with some of his points.....

Forget for a moment the 29 touchdowns Tebow has passed for or the single-season record for total offense at Florida he now holds. Consider this: He now has run for more touchdowns (22) this season than Herschel Walker, Bo Jackson or Reggie Bush did their Heisman years.

Florida is quietly pushing Tebow for the Heisman. No loud proclamations. Just a constant uncovering of statistics. He's the first player to run and pass for more than 20 touchdowns in NCAA history. His passing rating is at or above the past 10 Heisman quarterbacks.

Saturday brought this from Florida statisticians: In six common SEC opponents between Arkansas and Florida, McFadden has accounted for seven touchdowns while Tebow has for 25.

Enough said.....Tim Tebow earned it, he deserves it, and we'll just have to see how political the sports media really is.
