For general discussion and debate.

Hoping you all had a great Thanksgiving, today's possible talking point is the official start of the holiday shopping season, or Black Friday.

As you are likely aware, the media Scrooges are once again forecasting a terrible Christmas. With that in mind, how are you feeling about this season? Are you merry or Grinchy? Are you going to spend more or less than last year? How much of your shopping do you do on the Internet? Finally, how do you feel about your personal business and finances for next year?

Forgive me friends for I

Forgive me friends for I have sinnned. Last evening I got bored watching the Cowboys humilate the Jets. I turned to the evening news on ABC. They were showing the troops in Iraq eating Thanksgiving meals and playing flag football. I turned over to NBC and they were talking about how the surge was working. There were bus loads, yes that's plural, of citizens returning to Baghdad. It seemed to pain the news reader to have to report on the good news.

By the way we had a great Thanksgiving. Got to eat out our dinner on the deck. It was a chamber of commerece day here-high 79-warm SW breeze and partly cloudy. Thank goodness for global warming. Today it is cloudy and about 40 degrees 15 mph winds from the NE. Thank goodness for global cooling.

The wife and daughter left at 3:30 this AM to go to Greenville shopping. There is no way I am going to be caught near a shopping center today- NO WAY. Most of the sales were from 4 AM to noon.

SO BAD!

Went to the local supermarket to shop for Thanksgiving dinner; couldn't find a parking spot. The Mall--forgetaboutit! Went out to the local restaurant; no tables available. Most cars in my neighborhood are no more than three years old. "Retirees" by the millions are living as well or better than when they worked for a living. People are moving back to Bagdad and shocked at how good life is becoming there. Last time I looked, most Americans were thoroughly enjoying their safety and freedom in a land in which they can go as far as their dreams will take them and be anything they want to be. God Bless America!

Give a "liberal" 95% of want he wants and all he'll do is bitch about the other 5%.

I agree.  I know when Social Security was initiated, it was to keep our elders from living in poverty in their old age. That was before the days of IRA's, 401K's, and stock options. Currently, those over 65 are the wealthiest demographic group in this country. Granted, there are some who are hurting financially, but as a whole, that age group is doing very well.

When I lived in Florida, we would go out to eat, and see the seniors pull up in their Cadillacs towing huge motor homes, or in giant RV's, sit at a table and ask the waiter if they had a "senior citizen discount." Used to infuriate me. Many of them were also "Snowbirds" which meant they could afford to keep two homes, which made it even worse.

Not that I'm denying them anything (except the discount when they don't need it).  I hope to live like that some day. I just get tired of the Liberals telling us that all our seniors are struggling over the decision to buy medicine or Alpo.

Black Friday I've done slept in till 6:30, may do a little shopping if the crowds are not bad may not.  I plan to watch LSU - Arkansas until the Longhorns take on A&M.  Oh and I have about 4-5 hours of homework getting e-mails, RFIs, and job planning done.

I'll be spending more this year and should be about double that next year.

I look at the whole waiting in line for the supersales like this, if i wanted side work i could make a lot more doing that with less aggravation than I'd save fighting the crowds.  Strange how when you put in the time to train yourself, your time becomes more valuable.

Very Merry!

I don't see, nor do I expect any economic downturn for me personally in the near future.   I believe I've probably spent more this year than prior as well.  My most interesting discovery after visiting with family and friends (some quite liberal) is that practically all despise Hillary and will not vote for her for any reason.  My most disturbing news is that my sister (a school teacher) wishes that Algore would enter the race, because she believes he would be a great President at this time.  I asked her why, and discovered she has consumed the 'planetary disaster' scenario and believes something needs to be done now.  My 2008 goal now is to save her.  Have a great Holiday season all!

Here I must separate the

Here I must separate the Christmas season from the shopping season. I can't imagine a terrible Christmas. I will enjoy it as the wonderful holiday it is, and as I always do.

Spotting Christmas items before Halloween in a local drugstore really soured me to the shopping season. Charlie Brown sure had it right, around 40 years ago! I'll buy gifts (online when possible), but with a mind to what a person needs or wants, not the priciest item available. Probably spend more than last year, because last year was financially weaker.

Finally, my financial outlook for the coming year is optimistic. It usually is. If one expects misery, one can probably find it.

God Bless us, every one!

Flying Pig Alert!!!

Flying Pig Alert!!!

On "Private Practice" Wednesday night, a group of cloistered nuns had typhoid, with supposedly no outside contact...except a priest who said he never went into the cloister. Turns out he was a carrier (from being exposed many years ago), and he finally confessed to the doctor that he had been sneaking in occasionally to visit the nun that first became sick. Are you ready for this? Not what you think....she was teaching him to COOK and they had become close friends.

No hanky-panky involved. Can you imagine that? On network TV, a priest and a nun, in a platonic relationship????

Somewhere, certainly, a pig is flying....and Hell just froze over.

It's hard not to feel a LITTLE "grinchy"

When big government just stole some of my (First Amendment political speech related, and yes, I've contacted various groups left & right who claim to care) gifts, in what was obviously a politically-timed action. To top THAT off, then the antilibertarian-biased media decided to call what I wanted to do "illegal" without benefit of any trial (why bother, right?). But I'm sure I'll eventually get the Christmas spirit in me, if only because we always make the good GW-eggnog...

Sarc

I'm a bit lost on what you're getting at.  Would you please elaborate?

The elaboration

Is at the link. I hope you don't deny the obvious, that the medallions are political speech -- as they were that even before the expressly-political Ron Paul versions existed.

These people like my friend Bernard aren't dangerous criminals like the news media would have you believe. They simply want to peacefully compete-away the Federal Reserve with their barter/currency system. They'd been doing it for literally a decade with gold, silver, and platinum. But finally, Bernard started doing what frankly shoulda been done in 1982 (yes, Reagan wasn't a small-enough government guy for me) when the USA went from copper pennies to the zinc slugs we have now (which are now also worth more-than-a-penny due to inflation's dishonesty).

This peaceful political action was met with thuggery & immense media bias, as I've already outlined in the forums in gruesome detail. I hope that explains it, but if not, you might try asking more-specific questions. As it is, my political speech items have been confiscated by an obese government. It may not affect the rest of you much, but for me it has free speech implications, whether or not the ACLU, the ACLJ, EFF, the media, or anyone else claiming to care about the First Amendment cares to notice the obvious.

Sarc

and this will be brought up

More reason we need constructionists on the SCOTUS don't you agree?

Yes, you are even more annoying than Blonde.  the EYE

That's where Bernard was smart.

(And private currencies of more politically correct sorts abound, like airline miles & gift cards!). Anyway, Bernard never let me call his medallions "coins" for exactly this reason. They and his notes were "negotiable," but never "legal tender." The whole thing is a rather elaborate barter system that ended up getting a large quantity of silver into (very happy now...) private hands at prices below $10/oz. His customers are almost universally-happy about using his stuff, and they're happy to use FRNs if you refuse/dislike it.

That's why he's likely to eventually win the money-part of his case -- he'd already attacked the government over a bogus "warning" anyway. The government had just lost a motion to dismiss in that case when the theft was ordered, but it was ordered because of the delivery of the TWO TONS of copper medallions -- this had been going-on with other metals for years. The issue of 60K Ron Paul medallions had all SOLD OUT, so it was unlikely they'd ever trade at their $1 face value due to numismatic demand from collectors. Anyway, all of that for me is a side-note.

For me, this is my political speech, being taken away, and nobody in the news media noticing it except to point out -- pre legal case/judge/jury -- that it's "illegal." I'd be OUTRAGED if a bunch of Fred Thompson or Mitt Romney buttons were stolen by obese-government, BTW, just to make it clear that this might be a principles-issue beyond the personality of any politician I might like.

i've come not to argue semantics, (let the lawyers do that) medallions, coins, a rose by any other name, it depends on what the definition of is is.  Ad nausea.

My rum-induced spelling. I may yet kill enough braincells to forget the incident entirely. :)

But my main point this thread is that my First Amendment political speech stuff has been stolen by obese (big no-longer works, sorry!) government in a politically-timed theft that SHOULD outrage any of you who actually believe in the First Amendment. I hope it does, because I'd sure as hell be outraged if YOUR 'dangerous speech' were the target of obese-government thugs with badges.

Yes, this means I'm now involved in TWO lawyer-welfare programs. I get to pay both sides' lawyers in TWO bogus cases about which the "mainstream" news media has proven not only to be monolithically-clueless, but blatantly-biased against capitalism and for obese government. Oh, joy.

Rational Responders?

What a site!

I have a basic understanding of how ads by google pop-up on the sidebars of the NB site (as well as others). Words and phrases can be picked out by their computers and an ad pops up on a page that has something similar in it.

Going to sarcs most recent forum post concerning Ross Perot a sidebar ad shows up for a site/org called Rational Responders. The ad catches your eye because it states in bold lettering "Beleive in God? We can fix that". It's a site for atheists so most of you here will have little interest in it, but I have to tell you it's a cross between being insulting and being a hoot.

Update...I just checked with other pages here on NB, an evidently it's showing up on more than one.

Just curious...has anyone else seen the ad?

The Lame Cherry is always Merry

To answer the above, God has made me always merry............I never focus on the bad things, but trust in God to make them all well and good.

I believe in God so I believe in the season. Money will never solve things, you can't depend on politicians and believing God stops all the down turns as one can always rely on Him to work it out for the best.

I have no idea how much I will be spending, but I will invest my time more wisely as will my giving.

My shopping is indeed on the internet..........and I will be awaiting Amazon to tell me my stand mixer is really being offered to me on the sale block.........even though in the voting it is loosing.

Finances...........hope springs eternal in God always providing.

Finally, I have 2 suggestions for family holy days viewing. I somehow became addicted to that idiot Christmas Story with that kid and his Red Ryder bb gun...........I watched that in marathon and loved it more each time I saw it.
Second, George C. Scott before he died portrayed Scrooge and it is the most fabulous rendition ever performed. I heartily suggest people rent it or buy a copy as it makes wonderful family time traditions..........besides Church and gathering for the roast beast on Christmas Day.

The Bible verse is simple, though the vines may dry up and all hope is lost...........I will trust in the Lord as the Lord God is my strength and He will make my feet like hinds feet and make me to walk upon mine high places.

The world does not matter for a Christian, because we are on God's side.............so I could not be more upbeat and content.

Merry Christmas to all the Newsbusters typers!

Tradition

Shopping is always crowded prior to Xmas as well as more expensive. Out of tradition of normal tradition we provide the teenagers with cash on Xmas. They then have the opportunity to shop for whatever they desire at closeout prices and we are not forced to deal with returns.

We have arrived at a point where the ball is in their court. My daughter owns very elaborate photographic equipment and no doubt her money will be spent there. My son wants to do more with PC/DVR/TV integration and certainly he will be spending his there.

At this point, where, what, and how are up to them.

With that in mind, how are you feeling about this season?

I'm on a tight budget but like to go with what our 16th prez once said/wrote:

"People are about as happy as they make up their minds to be."

After a certain point, since we control so little, our minds are one thing upon which we do have influence. One sure-fire way to avoid negativism: Stay away from the LMSM. Even the local news is obsessed with spinning stories in the most melodramatic way possible.

Rumor or Not?

While sitting around the turkey yesterday, one of my guests remarked that some MSM source (he couldn't say which one) , in an effort to downplay the significant reduction of American casualties in Iraq commented, "With fewer American soldiers dying in Iraq, gravediggers are feeling the pinch".  I don't know if he was serious or not, but, if not, a new low has been achieved.  Did anybody else out there hear this?

Loaded headline

An AP story appears today on FoxNews.com with a very loaded headline:  "Cardinals Discuss Pentecostal Threats".  The story is about Vatican strategizing in response to a loss of church members to Pentecostal groups.  Despite the tone of the headline, nothing in the story suggests that Pentecostals are threatening anyone.  The closest thing to that in the article is a reference to "aggressive" evangelical movements.  Entering that title in Yahoo Search under the News category did not yield an exact match, but did bring up the article in four places, all titled "Cardinals discuss threat from Pentecostal sects, Orthodox progress".  It's hard to know who is responsible for the Fox News headline, but it's unnecessarily alarmist.

LOL

He has that look all the time.

Not a big deal, but instead of a headline that talks about a "purge," I'd have preferred something like "Mozart welcomed back." Many of the great composers got their start composing sacred music. Maybe we can sow the seeds for a new crop of great composers.

Well KC, you have to admit;

Yeah, read that.  This would be a good April 1 paper.  Surely those two know quantum physics and the uncertainty principle better than that.  The uncertainty principle works on the sub-atomic level because an observer needs to apply energy to a particle in order to make an observation.  The energy applied changes the energy of the particle.  Therefore, it is impossible to know precisely both the position and the velocity of the particle.  In order to make an observation on the macroscopic level such as they were talking about, the observers pointed telescopes toward what they wanted to observe and captured some of the energetic photons.  It did not shorten the life of the universe by any measurable amount.  The only way it could have possibly shortened the life of the universe was by the amount of energy they used to power the telescopes and computers that was lost to heat.  That amount was, I suspect, less than the amount of hot air those two yoyos put out reporting this nonsense.

Clubbing Undocumented Aliens and using N-words

The State of the Nanny State:

[Quote]

"As I believe Americans made resoundingly clear
this year, the only "path to citizenship" they favor involves making an
application from Norway, waiting a few years and then coming over when
it's legal.

Americans were so emphatic on this point that they forced a
sitting president to withdraw his signature legislative accomplishment
for his second term – amnesty for illegal aliens, aka a "path to
citizenship" for illegals.

This was the goal supported by the president's acolytes at the
Fox News Channel as well as a nearly monolithic Democratic Party and
its acolytes at ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, MTV, Oxygen TV, the Food
Network, the Golf Channel, the Home Shopping Network, the in-house
"Learn to Gamble" channel at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and Comedy
Central (unless that was just a sketch on the "Mind of (Carlos)
Mencia").

But ordinary Americans had a different idea. Their idea was:
Let's not reward lawbreakers with the ultimate prize: U.S. citizenship.
And the ordinary Americans won.

The Times disregards all of that history to announce it has
secret polls showing that Americans support a "path to citizenship" for
illegals after all! These polls are living in the shadows!

Only those "angriest on immigration," the Times said, are still
using the various words related to immigration that liberals are trying
to turn into new "N-words," such as, for example, "immigration." With
an exhausting use of air quotes, the Times reports that: "The
Republicans have railed against 'amnesty' and 'sanctuary cities.' They
have promised to build a fence on the Mexican border to keep 'illegals'
out."

In liberal-speak, that sentence would read: "The Republicans
have railed against 'puppies' and 'kittens.' They have promised to
build a fence on the Mexican border to keep 'baby seals' out." (In my
version, the sentence would read: "Believing New York Times 'polls,'
Democrats irritate 'voters.'")

Half the English language is becoming the "N-word" as far as
liberals are concerned. Words are always bad for liberals. Words allow
people to understand what liberals are saying.

According to the Times, all decent, cultured Americans cringe
when politicians use foul words like "illegals" to describe illegals.
Apparently, what most Americans are clamoring for is yet more automatic
messages that begin, "Press '1' for English." That, at least, is the
message the Times got from the stunning victory of grass roots over the
elites on the immigration bill this year.

It is against my best interests to mention how utterly out of
touch Times editors and reporters are with any Americans east of
Central Park West and west of Riverside Drive. I enjoy watching the
Democratic presidential candidates take clear, unequivocal positions in
favor of driver's licenses for illegals and then denouncing those very
positions a week later (after the real polls come in).

...

But it is too much for any human to endure to read the Times'
version of history in which "most Americans" agree with the Times on
illegal immigration in the very year Americans punched back against
illegal immigration so hard that the entire Washington establishment is
still reeling. It's not like we have to go back to the Coolidge
administration to get some sense of what Americans think about amnesty
for illegals. (I mean "amnesty" for "illegals.")

If
Moyers had been sitting across the table from Al Sharpton or Jesse

government and the nanny state is the answer to racism; but James Cone
was having none of that, he invokes God and Faith and accepting

Then Cone really makes Moyers look like a fool after Moyers says that
