Hiya Mickey!

Our Halloween party was Saturday and the town parade was Monday, so I'll only be accompanying the kids for Trick-or-Treat tonight as "Dad."

But I went a little obscure this year: Morty Melnick, the embattled Camp North Star head counselor from the 1979 Bill Murray flick, "Meatballs."  Here's Morty, and here's me as Morty.

For fans of the movie... I did teach my daughter to say "Hiya Mickey!" to me.

I'm dressing up as a front running Democratic presidential candidate. I am wearing a mask with two faces wearing a Chinese house coat, pockets stuffed with thousand dollar "donations". HALOWEEN HORROR

The film voted as having the 20th most scary scene in all of filmdom was....Bambi.

Oh, the horror....

Given the continuing strong reaction to an animated film, an argument can be made that Bambi was the beginning of the weepy "feelings" movement that plagues all aspects of society today.

Schools getting it right

Here's a case where a school is getting it right.

My wife volunteers to help our daughter's first grade class once a month, and the project she was given was a great one: The teacher had each child work with my wife two at a time to create a little Veteran's Day poster. The kids colored an American flag then wrote the words "Thanks" and then drew a picture of anything they wanted to that was patriotic. My daughter on her own thought to draw an eagle. She said one boy actually drew a great picture of an American soldier (careful, junior!). The posters will be hung in the school through Veteran's Day, then I believe they will be sent to American service men and women.

This comes on the heels of a great moment last Friday when she came home and started singing a song they were learning in music class: Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the U.S.A." Not only was it great to hear her sing and that her school isn't afraid of a little patriotism, but my daughter said after singing it, "It's a very important song."

When we bought a house earlier this year we were doing all we could to make sure our daughter stayed at the school she is at. Right now I'd say that decision was well worth the effort.

Thought I'd just share with you that some schools out there are still doing things the right way.

**My Daughter at the WWII Memorial

we are lucky also

The school my daughter goes to still believes in God and Country. Last Spring when my older daughter was "graduating" from the elementary school, the Mayor of our township addressed them. He said, among other things, "May God bless you and watch over you as you continue your educational journey at the Middle School next year."

Location, location, location

I notice you didn't identify the school or district. After that experience, if you did mention the location, you'd be overwhelmed with people trying to move there. It would be like the California Gold Rush.

Sounds like a good place. Hope it stays that way.

California Gold Rush

It's a nice relatively small downtown school, newly constructed last year. The only downside is few buses, and we live too far away for my daughter to walk, and there's virtually no parking around the school. So it's a little chaotic for drop off and pick up. But the pluses far outweigh that con.

Add: Oh, and it's funny that you mentioned the California Gold Rush. The man whose land where the gold rush officially began (Gen. John Sutter) lived the last 10 years of his life literally one block away from the school my daughter attends. As is his the Inn that bears his name and his gravesite. So it wouldn't be the first time a Californian fled to a more serene life back East.

There, a clue as to what school she goes to!

**My Daughter at the WWII Memorial

School

Hmmm... I know it isn't MA. Most of the Conservatives up here are underground. NH is quickly following suit. COULD be CT. Very agricultural in a lot of parts of CT and that usually makes for a nice hard working Conservative up bringing. Same for PA. I know it isn't RI. That entire state is a crim-alien sanctuary. Or it could be any of the South-eastern states.

How'd I do?

"I don't give DAMN what you think you're entitled too."

You are on the right track.

You are on the right track. It definitely isn't RI. It definitely is a state that is agricultrual in lots of parts.

**My Daughter at the WWII Memorial

Speaking of California,

Speaking of California, wasn't that the state that outlawed mentioning school districts in "home for sale" ads?

MSM/ACLU

Don't let the MSM or ACLU get wind of the name of the school.  It will be dealt with harshly if they know!!

Happy All Saints* Eve.

"...Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them." - Rev. 14:13

*"Saints:" meaning, in the plain biblical language, believers in Christ (not religious superheroes).

OOPS

Wrong place.

I put my Statler and

I put my Statler and Waldorf reply to dscott here by mistake before, but I do want to reply to your comment too.

I am a Catholic. We agree that not only the "superheroes" as you call them are saints. Everyone currently residing in Paradise with God is a saint. That includes my parents, grandparents, etc. That's why we have "All Saints' Day"....to celebrate ALL the saints, not just the the famous ones.

That's why the Irish refer to "My sainted mother." :-)

No to belabor a point, but...

It's not just everyone residing in paradise, it's every believer.  This is why the Epistles are addressed "to the saints..." at Philipi...or Ephesus...or wherever.  Look it up.  Living believers are referred to as saints...

I'm not just nitpicking.  I think it's important for Christians to realize that they are saints - i.e. sanctified ones; that they stand in a forgiven state and are currently citizens of Heaven although they currently dwell on Earth.  If we could keep this in mind, we might behave a little better....

Halloween is just the "eve" of the day we reverence those saints who have passed... : )

Amen Mattm

a happy All Hallow's Eve to you and yours too.

v

btw: us "saints" need to stick together - "if my people who are called by My Name, wiil humble themselves and pray; I will hear them and I will heal their land."  - God

We sure could use some "land-healing" right now.

I agree, I hadn't thought

I agree, I hadn't thought about it that way. We Catholics also believe in a "communion of saints", which includes the living, united with those "who have passed"....

Apparently Her Royal

Apparently Her Royal Clintoness was not amused at the lack of respect shown her last night, both by her opponents, and Tim Russert.

Politico also has a take on her "comeuppance."

Of course she is firing back already. Well, not her, she's too above it all...it's her "inner circle" defenders. According to the Drudge blurb:

CLINTON INNER-CIRCLE BLAME 'UNFAIR' MODERATOR TIM RUSSERT. 'HE BORDERED
ON THE UNPROFESSIONAL,' TOP HILLARY ADVISER CHARGES. 'HE BROKE DEBATE

Translation: he didn't kowtow to Her Royal Clintoness.

When did the quest for a simple yes or no answer to a simple question become a "gotcha" game, as H.R. Clinton charged last night?  Russert was not belligerent nor was he trying to "get her"; he was just trying to understand her position on a relatively straight forward matter.

he was just trying to

he was just trying to understand her position on a relatively straight forward matter.

He is guilty of fact finding.  Don't you know it is a rude Repub/Conservative thing to do to "understand" the sales pitch?  Russert was being annoying just like those people who insist on finding every inconsistency in a movie story line. <sarcasm>

Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity. dscott's corollary: The line between malice and stupidity is called depraved indifference.

Can't Take a Punch

Hillary thought this would be an annoinment and not a challenge. This is beginning to show the real Hillary and the one that will be exposed in the general election. These are the kind of questions Republicans got from Matthews with no complaints. I found Russert's questions to be legitimate.

She's fighting the wrong guy.....

This was my favorite exerpt from the news today.  It's from Nedra Pickler of the AP:

"Gone was the Clinton who laughed off their answers and joked about how she's lucky to be getting so much attention from all these men at her age. Clinton clearly had decided she must defend herself from rivals who are right on her heels in the leadoff voting state of Iowa and who pose a real threat to her winning the Democratic nomination.

Still, she continued her strategy of avoiding direct answers to questions: She wouldn't say how she would address Social Security; she declined to pledge whether she would stop Iran from developing a nuclear weapon, or say whether she supports giving driver's licenses to illegal immigrants.

Instead she tried to tried to turn every issue into an argument against President Bush. She said Bush's name 25 times, more than all six of her rivals combined."

She won't answer any questions with a direct answer and she's still running against GWB.  Has anyone told her about "term limits"?

she can't give her postion

She doesn't have any position. All she knows for sure is that she wants to be Prez. Her position depends on where she thinks the most votes are. that is why she can't answer any questions.....

The slightest prick

I saw a little bit of proof last night of what I've been saying all along: Hillary Clinton works in a protected bubble that the (pun alert) slightest prick will pop. Challenge her for real, not just during these velvet-gloved masquerades, and she'll fold like a tent. Can't wait to get her matched up against a real opponent. All she has to do is reveal that snarl, and watch the Frank Luntz/focus group popularity lines drop to the floor.

I confess, I didn't like Sabrina at all. But I honestly thought she was going to win the competition. She had been getting great scores from the judges, so the reason had to be audience votes were lacking. Guess she's not all that likeable to the general public.

Did anyone see her and her partner on Jimmy Kimmel? I think they were going to be on one of the AM shows today too.. which I don't watch. What did they have to say?

Alan Colmes, Reason #575,632 Why He Shouldn't Have a Microphone

Last night, once again, Alan Colmes proved he has no business being on a high profile interview program.

Ann Coulter was the guest on Hannity and Colmes (Colmes can't seem to understand he's not intelligent enough to debate her). Instead of sticking to the topic that Ann was brought on to discuss, Colmes tries to reopen a can of worms and he asks for an apology over her "antiSemitic" remarks. Once again, Coulter explains the beliefs of Christianity and Judaism (Christians have a Messiah; Jews are still looking for one). Alan calls that "the language of antiSemitism" and Ann was going to have none of that. She really got fired up. I think the producer of the show finally had to tell Hannity to step in and regain the show's composure.

I don't know why Colmes wades into waters that are too deep for him, but he comes off looking like an idiot. Maybe he's trying to get a job over at MSNBC.

I missed that...does anyone

I missed that...does anyone have a video link? I would love to see Ann chew Alan up and spit him out again.

Libs

I switched there to kill time during the hockey intermission and caught just this. Colmes is such a leftist he lacks the ability to reason. Without that ability, he cannot communicate with facts and relies on feelings and such.

He is not capable of reasoning with people and instead focuses in one area which is often unrelated to the topic. He attempts to corner individuals by not permitting them to finish their thoughts, simply interrupting and altering the topic.

It is interesting to watch Ann run circles around Colmes, often he is unaware. Sean is cognizant yet out of humble respect says nothing.

What does one expect out of a true lib from fair and balanced? Mrs Clinton is running for president, how much more does she know than Colmes?

JDW

Sen Clinton: Founder of Media Matters

An abvious Colmes Over

It was another in a growing list of dumb, idiotic "interviews" from Colmes.

He NEVER tries to elicit any useful information from conservative guests as he's too busy looking at his Media Matters' talking points, on something they said 20 years ago, and taken out of context.

I bet Ann would have had NO problem had he asked her in to discusss her comments about religion. But it was clearly a segment about the Presidential campaign.

I think he wanted to provoke her to walk out. I can't think of any other reason for his silly questions and then calling her anti-semite.

Based on her belief that she actually believes in her Christianity where the New Testament compeleted the Old Testament., and NOT supplanted it.

Check out my latest YouTube...but only if you support the troops and their mission: Better Men Than Me/The Battle For Fallujah

Jack,and Colmes

Jack,

and Colmes continues to pull that sneaky stunt, of insulting guests (in this case, Coulter), while they're speaking. He throws his bombs quickly, before either changing the subject or, else, at the end - to keep them from responding. He gets his jabs in so quickly or so under his breath, that the guest either doesn't hear him (but the viewers do) or doesn't have time to respond. His is the coward's way of debating. He's a snake.

Oh, my mistake, I thought I

Oh, my mistake, I thought I was posting on Newsbusters, where the defense of conservative antics is almost always through the lens of "Well, liberal x did something like this too."

Your remarks on Colmes are about his style of interviewing and punditing (if that can be made into a verb) and to ignore that his co-host employs the exact same bag of irritating blowhard tricks is disingenuous and makes clear that your criticisms are ideological, not stylistic.  Colmes may be grating to those who are not with him on the issues, but he is far and away the superior, more rational commentator on that show; which is why Hannity is so much more successful, I would imagine.  Who wants reasonable discourse when they can watch S.H. bluster his way through another reductive, epithetic attack on the evil Left?

Excellent job Roger.  Sometimes I just sit around and think about John Candy and cry laughing.  Johnny Larue, Mayor Tommy Shanks, Steve Roman, Dr. Tongue, etc.etc. I just loved his sense of humor.  I don't know if you ever saw "Going Berserk" but John Candy and Eugene Levy are in it.  They do a Kung Fu movie spoof that is worth watching the movie for.  He also is trying to impress his girlfriend's dad, and he asks John Candy about investing.  Candy's character replies, Yeah I invest in Smith and Barney and Opie, and totally doesn't know what he is talking about and it is great.

I also like "Who's Harry Crumb?" too.  "Armed and Dangerous" with Candy and Eugene Levy makes me laugh too.

What an awesome guy he was.  He and Howard McNear aka Floyd from "Andy Griffith" show make me cry laughing.  I can watch the same episodes of "SCTV" and "Andy Griffith" in black and white and cry laughing as if it's the first time I ever watched them.

Heaven has a lot of laughter with those 2.  May have to break out the SCTV Christmas episode where Larue wanted his crane shot for Christmas.

I just KNEW John Candy

I just KNEW John Candy would bring you out of the shadows and posting again, Carl my friend. It has been too long since you've grace the Shrub Report with your presence!!

BTW, you left out Paul Fistinyourface and Zontar!

The Zontar episode was

The Zontar episode was classic. They did a spoof of "Different Strokes" that was very funny. The brother of the dad from "Different Strokes" was Zontar's agent who infiltrated SCTV. William B Williams with that cabbage on the back of his head laughing was great. I think that may have gotten nominated for an Emmy if I'm not mistaken.
How about the "Golden Turkey" award show?
One of the last "SCTV" episodes had Candy playing a guy called Cognac with the lady from "Hill Street Blues" on SCTV. He goes around slapping everyone and it is classic. Unfortunatley they don't make cool shows like "SCTV" anymore.
He also did a good Tip O'Neil impression. I remember Steve Roman's characters and that was great. One time he was Steve Roman playing a Puerto Rican Supreme Court Justice, and he kept saying "Bring in the next witness" trying to use a Puerto Rican accent. Another time he was Angel Cortez FBI jockey. John Candy as Steve Roman trying to be a horse jockey. Just remembering all of this makes me cry laughing.

Here's to you John Candy, thanks for all the great joy of laughter.
