For general debate and discussion. Possible talking point: as it seems inappropriate to discuss tomorrow, what do folks think about Halloween? Is there any value to this "holiday" whatsoever, or just a clever way for snack and candy companies to sell their wares?

Iraqi soldiers give money to California fire victims
While a donation of $1,000 may not address any significant part of the loss from California's ravaging wildfires, already estimated at more than $1 billion, the source of that gift has some people expressing awe.
A troop of Iraqi soldiers assembled the funds and forwarded them to California for inclusion in the relief efforts being offered the thousands of people displaced by the still-burning California fires.

Sore spot
October 30, 2007 - 10:45 ET by SarahAnnieHalloween is a sore spot between my husband and I, but we have come to a happy compromise. He was raised as a fundamental Baptist, so when he was growing up, Halloween was evil. I am Lutheran, and when attending a Lutheran grade school, we didn't have Halloween, we had "Reformation Day", to mark the day when Martin Luther posted his 95 theses in 1517. We still dressed up in costumes (but nothing scary), went trick-or-treating, the whole 9. My husband says that's hypocritical. But our compromise is this, we will take our daughter trick-or-treating when she asks us. And considering that her vocabulary at the moment doesn't stretch far beyond "Mama", "Dada", and "bacon", I don't think it will be an issue this year! :)

My daughter and I dressed
October 30, 2007 - 11:11 ET by Hero SquadMy daughter and I dressed up and walked through town with her Daisy Scout troop last night for the annual Halloween parade. She was Sleeping Beauty, I was Morty Melnick, the camp counselor from "Meatballs."
We had a great time. Religion never factored into the equation.
Tomorrow is our trick-or-treat night. It'll be the first for our son, who turned 1 last Saturday. He'll be scaring up some treats in his Bard the Dragon outfit (from Baby Einstein.)

Dont't Take Life Too Seriously
October 30, 2007 - 11:14 ET by OldSailor88My suggestion is to read up on the holiday before you call it demonic. In the U.S. it's just a capitalist venture to sell candy and costumes. Here's a link to quell the Christian mind a bit. I can't understand people's religious hesitations about Halloween. My wife teaches at a Free Will Baptist day school. They won't even discuss costumes at school or decorations in the classrooms. They are going to have a "Harvest Festival" and encourage the teachers to dress like farmers. Hello???? Same difference! Most of the costumes that are considered demonic weren't even part of the original celebrations. Americans have added vampires and Frankenstein from the movies. Mummies were added when Egyptology was the craze. So, like I said, relax, have fun, put a bear costume on your kid and go quench that chocolate fix.

After a brief brouhaha, the ACLU was summarily dismissed when research showed that the land in question was actually owned by the Lititz Moravian Congregation, not Lititz Borough. It was a beautiful thing, and as the ACLU retreated with their heads between their legs, demonstrated proved just how foolish they can be to take on ridiculous crusades like this.

Voting doesn't matter in NJ, apparently
October 30, 2007 - 12:47 ET by ThisnThatWatched the Amtrack debate on CSPAN this morning. The Senator from Oklahoma pointed out that Amtrack food subsidies amounted to hundreds of millions/year, and if Amtrack would just break even on food, we (the taxpayers) wouldn't see an increase in subsidies for the next 5 years.
He made his point by pointing out that Airlines have cut food altogether to remain profitable; all Amtrack would have to do is to charge the same amount for a Heinikan that the airlines do ($5) rather than sell if for a loss at $3. Sounded reasonable to me.
Until NJ Senator Lauten... stood up and said "We may have a diabetic traveling on Amtrack. This whole idea is simply rediculous. I am against this. Surely we can come up with something else"?
Senator, the idea is to pay your way; not to remove all the food. What planet is this guy from?
Besides, if it could save hundreds of millions of dollars, I'd just fly that one person, for free, in first class. Whatever it takes.
Perhaps the most economical solution would be to replace those particular senators????

Halloweeen is stupid
October 30, 2007 - 12:11 ET by SouthJersey1953Halloween is a stupid "holiday." When I was a kid (45 years ago), Halloween was just a night of getting free candy. We used to be able to fill up 2 or 3 pillow-cases full of candy. Now, it is just another excuse that the young adults use to get drunk. The kids don't get as much candy now because too many adults are not home. They are out at Holloween parties.
No RINOs in '08 - Mike Huckabee is the best choice
Personally, I think
October 30, 2007 - 12:35 ET by motherbeltPersonally, I think Halloween is WAY overdone. Do you know that Halloween comes in only behind Christmas as the holiday that the most is spent on?
What really angers me about it is that it is no longer a holiday for kids to go out and collect candy. Now it's about adults dressing in the goriest and most horrible things they can find. On the one hand, we worry, as a society, about becoming "desensitized" to violence. On the other hand, on Halloween blood, gore, and violence (the more shocking the better) in all its forms is celebrated and glorified.
When my daughter was 4, I had to bring her home from Trick-or-Treating after about 15 minutes. She had already been frightened and crying because of the costumes (on high school kids) we were passing on the street. Then one of my neighbors, with no thought of the little ones, opened his door in some kind of horrible mask (I forget what it was, but it was horrible), and jumped at her with a terrible yell. That was the end of the night for us.
History of Halloween...
October 30, 2007 - 12:52 ET by vrwc13"Where did it begin?
It began over 2000 yrs ago with people known as the Celtics. They lived in what is today England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. This was also the beginning of the Celtic new year, a time to give thanks to the sun god for the harvest.
What is it all about?
Halloween, All saints day, All hallows eve or All souls day is a festival. It was held to honor the Samhain the so called "lord of death". It was a Druidical belief that on the eve of this festival Samhain, lord of death, called together the wicked spirits that within the past 12 months had been condemned to inhabit the bodies of animals.
It was a pagan belief that on one night of the year the souls of the dead return to their original homes, there to be entertained with food. If food and shelter were not provided, these evil spirits would cast spells and cause havoc toward those failing to fulfill their requests. (thus Trick or Treat!)
Sacrifices were offered on this night to the dead spirits because it was thought they visited their earthly dwellings and former friends.
There was a prevailing belief among all nations that at death the souls of the good men were taken possession of by good spirits and carried to paradise; but the souls of the wicked men were left to wonder in the space between the earth and the moon, or consigned to the unseen world. These wandering spirits were in the habit of haunting the living...But there were means by which ghosts might be exorcised.
To exorcise these ghosts, that is to free yourself from their evil sway, you would have to set out food and provide shelter for them during the night. If they were satisfied with your offerings, they would leave you in peace. If not, they were believed to cast an evil spell on you. (thus Trick or Treat!)
In modern day Satanism and Witchcraft covens, this is the day when Satan himself comes to "fellowship" with his followers. Many changes have occurred over the centuries, but one thing ha stayed the same, the practice of giving an "offering" has stayed the same. Oh we do it under the name of fun but what is the real meaning? Is it still the same as in the old days? I say the answer is YES."
...and the rest of the story...
v
"Is Halloween a TRICK or TREAT?
Most absolutely a TRICK. As you can see from all the above the real meaning of Halloween has been watered down. It is Satan's objective to get all to worship him. God tells us to not have any thing to do with this."
Peter I 5:8 Be sober, be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking some one to devour.

Fighting back on Halloween...
October 30, 2007 - 15:59 ET by Clear thinkerGrowing up mostly in NJ, we found the perfect prank to pull on Halloween. There is a small mountain range called the Ramapo mountians that ran behind our neighborhood. One of our friends showed us where Pagans held a ceremony every Halloween in a secluded area of the mountain range so we came up with a plan. First we made some 30-40 treats in woodshop at school. We then painted them white. We then snuck up to where the ceremony was being held on the night of Halloween. Hiding behind trees in the dark we watched with a sense of fear, but went on with our prank anyway. At the count of three we all started throwing our hand made treats over the trees so they would land close to the fire where the Pagans were circling and chanting.
To this day, I wished we could have recorded the moment because the looks on all the Pagans faces was priceless. The treats we made, painted and threw, were all crosses!

One surprising and neat thing that bears mentioning here: On Friday, Hannah came home from school and started singing to us one of the songs her music class is learning: Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the U.S.A."
She had already mastered the chorus and sang it for us. She followed it up by telling us that "it's a very important song."
She goes to a public school, which makes it even more impressive that they taught it to the kids. I think it might be for an upcoming Veteran's Day program. But it's not easy getting info like that out of a first grader.

OBAMA HITS A LONG HOME RUN (you watching, repubs?)
October 31, 2007 - 06:50 ET by reelman46OBAMA DOES REPUB CANDIDATE JOB LAST NITE
By NEDRA PICKLER (AP) Democratic presidential hopefuls Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., and Sen. Barack Obama,…
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - In the City of Brotherly Love, there wasn’t much for a sister.
Hillary Rodham Clinton’s rivals ganged up on her during a two-hour
Democratic presidential debate Tuesday night, putting the front-runner
on defense on issues ranging from Iraq and Iran to Social Security and
whether she would be electable in the general election.
Gone was the Clinton who laughed off their answers and
joked about how she’s lucky to be getting so much attention from all
these men at her age. Clinton clearly had decided she must defend
herself from rivals who are right on her heels in the leadoff voting
state of Iowa and who pose a real threat to her winning the Democratic
nomination.
Still, she continued her strategy of avoiding direct answers to questions:
She wouldn’t say how she would address Social Security; she declined to
pledge whether she would stop Iran from developing a nuclear weapon, or
say whether she supports giving driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants.
CRAWFISH NOTE:
HALLOWEEN TREAT:
Hey, Repubs, did you notice Obama (aka Mr. Fantasy) hit a long home run
off the Klinton “ace” last nite? Notice he simply had to bring up one
of the many many Klinton weaknesses? He simply brought up the hypocrisy
(the Klintons own that) of slamming Bush for secrecy then
(deliberately) holding back access to millions of documents from the 8
years of the Klinton juvenile administration. Did you see HRC look like
a zombie with no response?
The fact is the Klintons are so vunerable for their many actions,
inactions and scandals well known during 8 years… why not get after
this target-rich gold mine NOW! She had no response and can have no
reasonable response for many things IF somebody will simply bring them
out in an articulate way. We are tired of waiting!

Hat-tip for someone/Lou Dobbs/Spitzer
October 30, 2007 - 18:53 ET by bigtimerI gotta' get out of here for awhile...but I just saw Lou Dobbs blow up at his guest about the Gov. Spitzer deal with the drivers licenses being issued for all the illegals in nY...
I think his name was Michael Balbony or such...just heard him say it while I had just got into the half of the interview...
A hat-tip for someone.
He is still raving on about it...I love it!
Tropical Storm Noel
October 30, 2007 - 20:56 ET by BlondeWhere are you Mr. Sheppard?
Your tropical storm is beginning to rage outside. We're beginning to feel some slight effects here.
This is going to be a PITA. I've not turned on the Weather Channel (nor am I going to)....I'm sure the media has this hyped as a killer storm already.
Thank you Global Warming.

Oh Yay...Let's Sacrifice
October 30, 2007 - 22:29 ET by BlondeEdwards just said "we all need to sacrifice".
Um, hello, why?
I work hard, why should I sacrifice?
Would someone kindly explain the need for me to sacrifice (further?).
I work like a slave, don't get me wrong, I love my job. I "sacrifice" many things, personal life, vacations, etc. To earn the money that I need to do what I need to do....support my parents, support myself.
Why should I "sacrifice" to support illegals, other countries (Darfur), etc., etc.?
Oh, this is great...now Brian the MODERATOR is asking about "sacrifices".
I'm hearing the Jimma Cahtah "maliase thing" going on here.
Edwards is an idiot. This is the stupidest thing I think I've ever heard in my life....Silky Pony is going on about NO....
Oh, I should NOT have turned on the TV tonite...sorry all...I just hate stupidity.

Single women (with children) will be the ones to vote her in. It's a "security" thing.
They, along with the have-nots, never-will-haves and never-intend-to-do-squat crowd.
We now have less than 13 months. Let's hope the "real" consevative movement is not as dead as I fear that it is.
