If anyone's been tracking the sunspot activity lately, we are sitting at zero (www.spaceweather.com ) and have been for quite a while (16 days). The average sunspot number will be less than 1 for the whole month of October if nothing pops up here in the next 7 days.Â
According to my research, the historic end of the cycle and low point occurs when the monthly sunspot number is less than 2, that's at least according to the last 3 cycles (21, 22, 23). http://sidc.oma.be/html/sidc_graphics.html  The official start of cycle 24 will be pronounced when the sun's polarity flips, which I believe should occur here in the next two months. Current status of cycle 23: http://www.astro.ucla.edu/~obs/150_data.html#plots or http://www.solarcycle24.com/Â

In the battle against "earmarks", I wish the conservatives could come up with a better term than "earmarks". Everytime I hear a candidate or commentator speak out against earmarks, I think that there are a lot of people out there who have no idea what they're talking about. There's got to be a term that's more descriptive and negative.
"Pork Barrel Spending" is better - more descriptive with more negative connotations (I wondered what had happened to the term). Of course, when it's going to your state, it's an investment...
Whenever I hear Sean Hannity let loose with one of his endless lists of the differences between conservatives and liberals (I suspect because he can't come up with a concise description), he always says, "We're against earmarks". Which makes me think: Oh, yeah, there's a catchy and effective campaign slogan for us...
The Senate is getting ready to vote for Cloture on the so-called 'Dream Act'...another back door way to give illegal aliens legal status here in this country...we want a vote of NO on cloture.Â
Please for those of you who care call your Senators ect...this is another way to slide this through with people not paying attention because of the fires...
Senator Hatch is another office you should call since this is his baby along with Durbin's...
Senator Vitter is fighting hard to get this defeated, along with Sessions and Inhoffe, Bond and others...they are speaking about this now on C-Span,..by the way this bill has no enforcemnent whatsoever.
Email call anything....they are trying to slip this by...this is Amnesty again!
Illegal immigration defeated again...with no thanks to the likes of Craig who when I called his office said he was going to vote yes with Reid's motion to invoke Cloture then proceeded to vote NO...then after he felt safe changed his vote back to YES...don't tell me he isn't a switch-hitter, if he thinks the people in Idaho are going to forget any of his illegal immigration votes he is nuts...along with others who changed their votes, Domenici and Graham, but they changed to NO....now we have others who voted to allow the illegals amnesty too...such as wanna' be President Brownback, Lott, Hagel, Hutchinson, Hatch, Bennett, Martinez, Coleman, Collins, and Snowe...really precious Senators eh?
Thank goodness for my Senators here in Mt. for once, both Tester and Bauchus voted no along with Byrd, Pryor, Conrad and Landrieu (sp)....
Senator Nelson, Ben (D, NE) is going to get a phone call from me...last time I talked to his office, he said he was voting against it. Bad enough that my RINO Senator (Hagel) co-sponsored it...
Haven't caught you here for a long time good to see you gal.
I hope you do call, the people in Craig's office told the truth to me before the votes, I said what I thought of him doing this again with his votes when it comes to illegal immigration and few other things as well...
When he voted No I figured he must of listened to me...(just kiddin') but I had hoped enough people had called him, well I watched him on the floor stay around and just knew he was going to change it, he did, towards the end....I have despised him for a long time, I just don't think I could despise him anymore than I do other leftists.

No RINOs in '08 - Mike Huckabee is THE one, true conservative in the raceÂ
Last nights ABC 20/20 Special on the fires in California...
The program opened with about a 30 second narrative with the last line being classic MSM. "Can FEMA keep this from becoming another Katrina?"Â
Later in the show they did a piece on "Escaping the fires or the Feds" which was an attempt to portray illegals as putting their lives in danger because they were afraid of seeking help.
GIVE ME A BREAK!!!!!!
The only bright spot was that Charlie Gibson stuck to reporting.
This Katrina comparison has been embarrassing with the msm in the last two days...they should be embarrassed, but they do not even know the meaning of the word.
The leftist NEVER stop with attempting to always have an agenda to hurt the President and the right side of the aisle, whether it is the war which we are winning or this massive evacuation order going just fine thank you...they never stop...ever.
People can see right through it...well, most people anyway.
Chris... Boy have you got that right...Newsbusted couldn't even compete, no other comedian could either.
It is so maddening, but more than that, just pathetic in my eyes, especially when worried about others, I have family I am worried about constantly with the fires...
I also heard this morning that they caught an arsonist in action at Running Springs where my cousin lives/lived?
You would think the msm would be attempting to learn just how many of these were caused or are yet to be caused by arson....
Just sayin'....(It has been on my mind since the second day of the fires, I have been glued to the set on and off since late Sunday evening after the debates, then hearing about where some of these main fires were besides Malibu and learning of my family in dangerous areas, I just could not help but wonder who is aiding and abetting these fires)
I do NOT usually watch them, but the wife was watching 'dancing with the shmoes' and the special came on immediately after. She pulled one of those "honey, why don't you watch something with me for a change" hints.
CT, the next time you hear, "honey, why don't you watch something wit me for a change?" Just tell her, "Certainly, dear." Then pop in a tape or dvd like Resident Evil or Red Heat or Die Hard, etc. Then you'll find out if she really wanted to watch something together, or if she just wanted to annoy you. (Even worse, make it a Three Stooges compilation.)

I just received this in an email and wanted to share it with everyone;Â
Minorities
We need to show more sympathy for these people.  Â
They travel miles in the heat.  Â
They risk their lives crossing a border.  Â
They don't get paid enough wages.  Â
They do jobs that others won't do or are afraid to do.  Â
They live in crowed conditions among a people who speak a different language.  Â
They rarely see their families, and they face adversity all day every day.
I'm not talking about illegal Mexicans;
I'm talking about our troops!Â
Â
Doesn't it seem strange that many members of Congress are willing to lavish all kinds of social benefits on illegal's, but don't support our troops?
Well, I've seen some of the national news guys here... Geraldo, Matt Lauer, Charles Gibson, Anderson Cooper and others. The national news is using footage from local stations, but, they are getting some of it confused with the Malibu Fire and others in So Cal. They seem to think it's all one big fire. Well, here in San Diego County there are 13 seperate fire fronts. Winds have downed powerlines and set off multiple fronts, embers are flying everywhere and areas that burned 2 days ago are flaring up and spreading in new directions. I live a little town called Poway. We lost 85 homes. We are right up against Rancho Bernardo which lost to date 280 homes. That is the first place the national news guys went. We are safe, but, it was pretty hairy for a couple of days. The fires will be burning around us for the next 2 to 3 weeks. Homes that burned on Sunday are still smoldering today and the police are hesitant to let people back into their neighborhoods. Wind is slowing and the humidity is coming up a bit, but, the daytime temp at my house today is projected to be in the mid 90's. RH has been in the single digits (7 to 9 %!).
To date over 550,000 people have been evacuated from their homes, over 410,000 acres have burned, nearly 2,000 homes are gone and the total monetary damage estimate is now said to be 1 Billion dollars. The totals will be much worse once the fires are out and they can get a handle on the real amount of damage. Yesterday was the first day that the winds were calm enough for the fire-fighting aircraft to fly and they did a great job. Today the winds are expected to lessen and they expect to get even more aircraft up. Last night 3 of our congressmen, Duncan Hunter, Daryl Issa and Brian Bilbray had a closed door meeting with the managers of Cal Fire (previously called CDF) and they basically demanded that the military be allowed to fly and assist. There has been a lot of political BS keeping them grounded, but, they are expected to be helping out today. Thank God. The fire fighters here need all the help they can get. Some of these guys have been on the fireline for over 72 hours.
Here are a couple of links that have been providing pretty good info. for people online. My sister-in-law lives in Conn. and was freaking out when she saw our neighborhood on CNN. After sending her a couple of links she is a little less panicked. :^)
The KOGO link is for a local radio station that has been on 24/7 and they have streaming audio if you'd care to listen. We have been monitoring them since things began early on Sunday morning. They are absolutely the best. I can't say enough good about the jobs they have done. County-wide there has been a real outpouring of support. I think part of it is due to the fact that most of us have been through this before. Exactly 4 years ago today the Cedar fire started in an area only a few miles from where the Witch fire (the biggest in the state as I write this) started on Sunday afternoon. The stories I am seeing about people helping people are truly inspirational...
Places that have burned or are still burning include- Ramona, Poway, Santa Ysabel, Julian, Rancho Bernardo, Escondido, Rancho Santa Fe, Del Dios, Descanso, Dulzura, Potrero, Jamul, Chula Vista, Spring Valley, Fallbrook, Palomar Mountain, Rainbow, and Camp Pendleton. This thing is far from over. I'm off to go check things in town. We still have a few hundred folks at the community center. Something funny that we saw yesterday here in town while tracking the fire's progress, the local Costco was closed, but, the parking lot was full of RV's and fifth wheel trailers, horse trailers and other campers... People had taken the stalls that hold the shopping carts and blocked them off and were using them as makeshift corrals for their horses, ponies, sheep, goats, and even some big ole pigs! It was quite a sight. I'll check back at NB later today. Anybody that wants can PM me and I'll try to relate anything I can about what is going on. I've been talking to friends who are firemen, sherriffs, police and highway patrol and keeping up on all that I possibly can. I've been the eyes and ears for many in our large extended family. Take care all and thanks to those who have PM'ed already and expressed their concerns. I am safe and have dodged a huge bullet where I live. Please pray for those who haven't been as fortunate. Bye for now, RX
Thanks for the excellent update and links...I have an Aunt and Uncle in San Diego, so far they are safe.
I know the Lake Arrowhead Grass Valley/Slide fire is still very dangerous, I have heard and read over 400 homes have burnt down in the Running Springs area, my cousin lives there...or lived there anyway.
Canyon Country is another area that seems to be about contained for now to an extent...I also have other family in that area.
I hope the Santa Ana's stay down.
My thoughts and Prayers go out to all that are in harms way.
It would be amusing to get some pictures of the menagarie at COSCO. It might be even more amusing to have a caption contest with some of the shots. I can imagine the corall saying another day in congress.
One of the star Red Sox announcers those days was Curt Gowdy, who left us a couple of years ago. Curt used to do ads for Narragansett Beer. 'Gansett is now being brewed again, and has some of Curt's old ads on their website:
Coke just bought Moxie and plans to widen it's market again...
Thanks for the link to the Yaz song....funny stuff.
BTW, I don't mean this in any kind of a "superiority" way, but do other teams have the same kind of old-time off the wall humor as the Red Sox?  I ask because of the conversation I had here the other day about Manny, and how he's given more leeway at Boston than he was in Cleveland.
The Yankees made Johnny Damon cut his hair and beard, but he did some pretty funny commercials while he was with the Sox.
I'm sure you've seen the Sox' dugout percussion band...
Baseball has a long history of "characters", but it seems to be losing them.   I hope the Sox hold on to the tradition....
Bill is now the pride of Maui. Got to see him pitch a few times in his heyday. When he first came up with his Eephus pitch it was great, but then batters figured out how to hit it!
I always liked El Tiante better from that crop of Sox pitchers. Esepcially his pitching motion, which had to be seen to be believed.
I can think of a few teams that did the crazy stuff, but they're for the most part long-gone.
The St. Louis Browns and Chicago White Sox teams when Bill Veeck was running those teams did some wild stuff. Bill actually hired a midget to pitch a game once, and also came up with the idea of having announcer Harry Caray sing "Take Me Out To the Ball Game" during the 7th inning stretch (a lot of people forget that Harry was the White Sox announcer before he went to the Cubs). And who can forget Disco Demolition Night in 1979? It started a riot at Comiskey, and cost the White Sox the game.
I was lucky enough to see another baseball showman in action when I was in Oakland in 1976 and went to a Red Sox-A's game. Charlie Finley still owned the team then, though he would break up the 3-time championship team after that '76 season and sell the team 4 years later. Before the game, a Dixieland band entertained us from the first baseline, and they were replaced by the team mascot, a mule named Charlie O, coming out to trim the infield. Said mule was named after the owner, of course.
I had a profound dream last night. In it, I figured out a way to knock Hillary off pace during her march to the white house.
Someone hire (Fox maybe) Monica Lewinsky as a reporter. Then get her Press credentials for every major event that Hillary attends. Monica won't even have to ask any questions, just being there would cause such a stir that the attention would be taken away from Hillary. Â

October 24, 2007 - 11:51 ET by Chris NormanIn the battle against "earmarks", I wish the conservatives could come up with a better term than "earmarks". Everytime I hear a candidate or commentator speak out against earmarks, I think that there are a lot of people out there who have no idea what they're talking about. There's got to be a term that's more descriptive and negative.

October 24, 2007 - 12:06 ET by bigtimerThe Senate is getting ready to vote for Cloture on the so-called 'Dream Act'...another back door way to give illegal aliens legal status here in this country...we want a vote of NO on cloture.Â

The only bright spot was that Charlie Gibson stuck to reporting.

I'm not talking about illegal Mexicans;
I'm talking about our troops!Â

Doesn't it seem strange that many members of Congress are willing to lavish all kinds of social benefits on illegal's, but don't support our troops?

Quick Fire Update 10/24/07 9:30am Pacific Time
October 24, 2007 - 13:22 ET by rx4musicHi all,
Well, I've seen some of the national news guys here...
http://www.kpbs.org/news/fires

http://www.signonsandiego.com/

I know the Lake Arrowhead Grass Valley/Slide fire is still very dangerous, I have heard and read over 400 homes have burnt down in the Running Springs area, my cousin lives there...or lived there anyway.

Speaking of the classics coming back, Del
October 24, 2007 - 16:49 ET by RJCoke just bought Moxie and plans to widen it's market again...
But do you recall...

October 24, 2007 - 20:42 ET by Del DolemonteBill is now the pride of Maui. Got to see him pitch a few times in his heyday. When he first came up with his Eephus pitch it was great, but then batters figured out how to hit it!
I always liked El Tiante better from that crop of Sox pitchers. Esepcially his pitching motion, which had to be seen to be believed.
A Couple Come To Mind
October 24, 2007 - 18:43 ET by Del DolemonteI can think of a few teams that did the crazy stuff, but they're for the most part long-gone.
Bottom of the 5th, Red Sox up 13-1
October 24, 2007 - 22:52 ET by RJ...and with 9 extra base hits, they've already tied a World Series record.Â
The dugout percussion band is going full tilt... :^)Â
P.S. Thanks for the extra baseball trivia, Del....I love it.  People who don't "get" baseball don't know what they're missing....

October 24, 2007 - 23:38 ET by RJ...there's a whole World Series to play....and I think the announcers were pretty dumb when they were dissing the Rox last inning....
Oh, absolutely
October 24, 2007 - 23:53 ET by dervishI suspect the Rockies pitchers might even show up tomorrow, and it'll definitely be a different game in Colorado. I think.
That fifth inning, though, looked like an Ohio State-Kent State football game. It's not often you feel sorry for a professional team.
