MRC/NB's Bozell on FNC's 'Hannity & Colmes' About Couric on Iraq

  • Bookmark and Share

Brent Bozell, President of the MRC which runs NewsBusters, appeared Wednesday night on FNC's "Hannity & Colmes" to discuss comments Katie Couric made hostile to the Bush administration decision the launch the war in Iraq. Couric spoke about the Iraq war at a Tuesday night "Kalb Report" forum at the National Press Club (C-SPAN2 will air it Wednesday night at 11:15pm EDT). Couric contended that “people in this country were misled in terms of the rationale of this war” and she expressed frustration: “I've never understood why [invading Iraq] was so high on the administration's agenda when terrorism was going on in Afghanistan and Pakistan and that [Iraq] had no true connection with al Qaeda.”

Bozell reminded viewers of how, in a September of 2006 profile of Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice which aired on 60 Minutes, after Rice wondered “what's wrong with assistance so that people can have their full and complete right to the very liberties and freedoms that we enjoy?”, Couric retorted: “To quote my daughter, 'Who made us the boss of them?'” (MRC CyberAlert posting with video)

An excerpt from "Couric weighs in on Iraq, Rather," by Jeff Dufour and Patrick Gavin in the September 26 Washington Examiner:

Speaking at the National Press Club Tuesday evening, CBS "Evening News" anchor Katie Couric pulled back the curtain on her personal views of both the war in Iraq and former "Evening News" anchor Dan Rather.

"Everyone in this room would agree that people in this country were misled in terms of the rationale of this war," said Couric, adding that it is "pretty much accepted" that the war in Iraq was a mistake.

"I've never understood why [invading Iraq] was so high on the administration's agenda when terrorism was going on in Afghanistan and Pakistan and that [Iraq] had no true connection with al Qaeda."

Further, Couric said the Bush administration botched the war effort, calling it "accepted truths" that it erred by "disbanding the Iraq military, and leaving 100,000 Sunni men feeling marginalized and angry...[and] whether there were enough boots on the ground, the feeling that we'd be welcomed as liberators and didn't need to focus as much on security." She added "I'd feel totally comfortable saying any of that at some point, if required, on television."

The former "Today" show anchor traced her discomfort with the administration's march to war back to the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks.

"The whole culture of wearing flags on our lapel and saying 'we' when referring to the United States and, even the 'shock and awe' of the initial stages, it was just too jubilant and just a little uncomfortable. And I remember feeling, when I was anchoring the Today show, this inevitable march towards war and kind of feeling like, 'Will anybody put the brakes on this?' And is this really being properly challenged by the right people? And I think, at the time, anyone who questioned the administration was considered unpatriotic and it was a very difficult position to be in."...

The September 4 MRC CyberAlert has a list of Couric's worst bias from the past year, including on Iraq.

He had Alan on the ropes from the outset.

Anybody ever notice how Alan is the consummate buttinski when arguing with a woman, and much less so when arguing with a man.

Watch closely and you'll see what I mean.

...after Rice wondered

...after Rice wondered “what's wrong with assistance so that people can have their full and complete right to the very liberties and freedoms that we enjoy?” Couric retorted: “To quote my daughter, 'Who made us the boss of them?'”

While meaning no disrespect to Mr. Bozell, but The Perky One has a point. Under Rice's thinking, the United States is obliged to eventually invade every nation which does not grant its citizens "the very liberties and freedoms that we enjoy."

That said, Katie is wrong in her comments on C-SPAN. If Americans were misled as to whether Iraq was a threat, then they were misled by:

  • George W. Bush
  • The CIA
  • Tony Blair
  • MI-6
  • The United Nations
  • Bill Clinton
  • Hillary Clinton
  • Edward M. Kennedy
  • John F'n Kerry
  • Madeline Albright
  • George H.W. Bush

...and...

  • Saddam Hussein (who, if he really had no WMDs, would've said, "Sure, send in your inspectors! Have a look around; can I get you a falafel?"  and avoided the whole war.)

Alan Colmes says "The surge

Alan Colmes says "The surge is working is an opinion"

So he is very happy to listen to what General Petraeus has to say, but that's just the General's opinion. Colmes feels free to think the General is wrong. When the General in charge comes back and testifies that the surge is working and progress is being made, and people like Alan Colmes are saying well, that's just his opinion, mine is different, one has to wonder WHAT they would accept as evidence.

Okay, let's for a moment assume both positions are only opinions: we know what General Petreaus' qualifications are to form his opinion; what are your qualifications, Alan?

*silence. crickets chirping. a tumbleweed blows through the studio*

I thought so.

Katie Couric

Katie Couric’s interview at the National Press Club Wednesday was very telling.

When asked about the future of network TV news,  she admitted that it doesn’t look good. She even indicated that she probably will not be around within the next five years.

She, of course, blamed the Internet for the upcoming demise of network news, which parrots the reasoning of much of the MSM, and shows a head-in-the-sand mentality on their part.

She suggested that it is the viewer’s fault for not understanding what was being presented to them when, in reality, it is the viewers revulsion with how the networks disseminate the news in an agenda-driven, biased manner.

She then explains the reason for her low viewership is because – “people don’t like women of power”. This, of course, is poppycock and shows that women in history is not one of her long suits. Dan Rather wasn’t a woman, was he?

All in all, I felt the interview was Couric’s swan song as she said that her job was second to her family thereby leaving one to believe that she realizes that her days are numbered.

Who made Couric boss of ....

Who made Couric boss of  the Iraq War Stategy..... ?

When Couric said "I've never understood" ....she explained lots of things....her IQ, Her knowledge of historical details, her ability to handle complex issues.....

Someone get her a Job as a NFL babe on the sidelines......
