The gov't hasn't used the

The gov't hasn't used the army to stage a military coup yet, either, right? I think you miss the point of my previous comment. The vote totals mean there are Democrats out there who, along the Republicans, know stuff that we do not, and understand how this power will help protect this country.

You moved back to "Hard Copy" territory mighty quick. The "V For Vendetta" line of thinking is weak.

Roger you Roger! I get the point you are making

and isn't it funny how little attention the dems who agreed to this are getting. When there was a Republican controlled congress this was an outrageous abuse of power, now how can anyone say that?

There is no chance of it being misused because if it's misused then they can't use the info gained even for another warrant. This is so limited and only applies to foreign conversations with terrorists. The dems know this and the ones who voted against it are only doing so because they don't want to admit that they made this into a cause for political reasons only.

The press is giving pretty neutral coverage on the passage of this bill, a stark contrast to how they were portraying it with a Republican congress. If anything they should be giving negative coverage to Pelosi and Reed and the rest who would rather put the country at risk just to have a political issue.

To be honest, finding new stuff that's good these days is tough. Suprisingly, the new Smashing Pumpkins is pretty cool, and I always like whatever Type-O Negative puts out. and the new Dimmu Borgir is heavy. Shockingly, the new Scorpions is pretty good, too.

Steelers #1 in NFL

Now for the only really important news... after soundly trouncing the New Orleans Saints last night, the 1-0 Pittsburgh Steelers are the number one team in the NFL, followed by 30 other 0-0 teams, and the Saints at 0-1.

I've got a feeling... Pittsburgh's going to the Superbowl.

I've got a feeling... Pittsburgh's going to the Superbowl.

I've got a feeling...

I've got a feeling...You

I've got a feeling...You need to lay off the Iron City beer for a couple of days Bruzilla!!!!!

The only thing you should feel when shooting insurgents is the rifle recoil.

True story... I've bought

True story... I've bought beer only one time in my whole life, and that was after we beat the Rams in the Superbowl and I bought a six-pack of ICB cans with the team photo on them.  I gave away five and kept one as a souvenir.  I was flying in P-3C Orions for the Navy at the time, and I carried that can in my briefcase on every flight.  One day my senior pilot saw it, and told me that I couldn't have that beer on a naval aircraft.  I told him that I had never drunk a beer in my life, but if he ever announced that we were about to crash, ditch, or bailout, I was going to slug that beer down.  So we agreed that as long as he never crashed the plane, I would never drink the beer.

That can sits unopened on my bookcase as I write this, so we never crashed.

LOL Bruzilla...Great

LOL Bruzilla...Great story.

I am a Panthers fan.  I hope they do well this year and not implode again.  Fox is on the hot seat.  I think if they don't do well this year that your old coach will take over the Team.

The only thing you should feel when shooting insurgents is the rifle recoil.

Bruz,

LMAO-Uhh, don't you think you ought to wait until at least a few games into the regular season before making such bold pronouncements?

Oh, well, I don't think we will be seeing the Falcons anywhere near the big dance this year, or the next, or the year after that.....

Help Fred defeat everybody.

Actually, I've been singing

Actually, I've been singing that little ditty since I was a little kid growing up in Pittsburgh, and I sing it with fellow fans, and make that pronouncement, every year.  So far I've been right five times, so I'll keep doing it.

bruzilla...

Can you say preseason? Who cares? The preseason is kinda like kissing your sister, necessary to a point, but not that exciting.

In the end, and you heard it here, the Super Bowl Champions will be the undefeated Chicago Bears...19-0. Improved on defense and REALLY improved on offense...Devin Hester will emerge as the Rock Star of the NFL.

GO BEARS!!!

I've noticed over the years

I've noticed over the years that the only folks who say things like "who cares about preseason games?" or "so what... they don't count" are the fans of the teams who lose them.  I don't care if the Steelers are playing a charity putt-putt tournament, I am thrilled when they win.

And it starts.  A Steelers

And it starts.  A Steelers fan calls a Bears fan a loser and the post start flying!!!

I love it!!!

The only thing you should feel when shooting insurgents is the rifle recoil.

Airforce...time for the Woodshed?

Is time to for the Woodshed?

When did I call the Bears

When did I call the Bears losers?  They're 0-0 right now.  They're not in first, but they're not DAL like the Saints.  :)

I have nothing but the greatest respect for the fans from the Windy City.  They have the same great sense of respect for tradition that Steelers fans have.  A Bears game is the only time the Steelers play an opponent where fans of both teams are lined up to get pierogies at either stadium.

I will admit that I have nothing but utter contempt for Cowboys fans as they tend to be bandwagon slugs at best.

Preseason football

When the Bears one their Super Bowl, they wer 0-4 in the preseason. I would not base regular season and playoff predictions based on the preseason.

But, enjoy the Steeler's preseason...it is probably all that will go right for them.

Speaking of Football...

Did anyone else catch Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, the guy who broke, bent, and otherwise thwarted just about every NFL rule to keep his team intact year after year, introducing Michael "I know that's a lot of coke, but I swear it's for my own use" Irvin into the Football Hall of Fame on saturday?  I don't know who looked more pathetic on the stage - Jerry Jones trying to stir up sympathy by talking about the first time he saw Irvin take a hit that he couldn't get up from (because he was so ripped on drugs at the time) or Irvin trying to show he deserved to be in the HOF as something other than "Biggest Coke Dealer in NFL History"?

I have more respect for left-wing blogger ranters than the sports writers who voted the Pete Rose of the Gridiron into the HOF.

Bruzilla...

Man...where's the love?

First, Pete Rose's issues involve gambling, not drugs. The commissioner of baseball has issued a ban on Rose, not the electors.

As for Irvin, he made it on his merits as a football player...not as a law abiding citizen nor role model. If there was some other criteria to be used, a large number of football's HOF would be missing.

If conservatives are RIGHT, then liberals must be WRONG.
Thompson/Rice

What's the difference

What's the difference between gambling and drugs?  Does the chance of someone throwing a game to cover a bet outweigh someone playing while high?  Is getting busted for gambling and changing your ways better than getting busted for drugs and saying you'll change yoru ways, only to get busted two more times?  To me, Michael Irvin is every bit the embarassment to football as Rose is to baseball.

My lib brother loves Law

My lib brother loves Law and Order. Consequently, when I go to his house for dinner, I get subjected to it (at least in the background). At least he has the good sense to turn off Olbermann when I walk in - because he knows better. Last night a particularly liberal L&O was on, involving an evil psychiatrist who worked at Gitmo - including speeches by the two detectives about how "rights were being denied". Barbecuing, he missed part of the end. He asked if I knew who the murderer was. I said it didn't matter, because the point was to indict Gitmo, the story was just hung around that.

I HATE Law & Order!

I used to watch it by choice but now I get so angry and so vocal when I'm watching it (out of sheer boredom during re-run summer) that my husband has to remind me that TV viewing is not in fact an interactive sport.

But the preachiness is so blatant and whiny and disgusting that there is not a shred of enjoyment left in the story.

I object to the way the

I object to the way the writers of L&O warp the news to fit their liberal world view storyline. If the "story is torn from the headlines" as they like to advertise, then they should stick to the real story.  Besides, the writers have the detectives frequently vilolate rights and trick the suspects into giving themselves away, yet in this episode, they objected to holding and questioning terrorists at Gitmo. There's something hypocritical here - surprise, surprise...

The dogs bark, but the caravan moves on.

No ripping anymore

They no longer "rip" the plots, most are fiction now. And this allows the writers more leeway to get their politics into the mix. As a prosecutor, Jack abuses his powers all the time. Gov. Spitzer probably uses him for a role model.

Very similar to their views on the military, in fact.

Chris - Rush vs Olberman card

Chris - don't you just love how condescending liberals usually are?
They think you can only hold conservative beliefs if you are brainwashed by
Rush Limbaugh but that their liberal beliefs come to them through their own
brilliance. Its such a joke because you have to be more independent
minded to be conservative. Everything in MSM, television shows and movies
leans heavily liberal and you actually have to become independent and seek out
something different when you know their bull doesn't sound right. It
doesn't mean liberals can't be independent thinkers, but many more of them are
more likely to be brainwashed and go with the crowd types.

It's one of the reasons they always have to make comments like "Did
Rush tell you to say that?" rather than address the actual point.
They can't address it unless it's something they already
heard argued by another liberal. Your come back of "Did Olberman
tell you to ask that?" was directly related to his accusation, his Rush
comment avoided your issue.

It's really sad actually

Dee,You're right, of

Dee,

You're right, of course. Beyond that, my brother likes to think he's pressing my buttons by asking me if I got some point from Rush Limbaugh (I'm way past getting ticked off by that tired tactic). He knows I rarely have a chance to listen to him and have been a conservative way longer than Rush has been around  (I suscribed to National Review before I was out of college). I now retaliate by accusing him of getting his Bush Derangement Syndrome beliefs from Olbermann - that's one of his buttons :)

Wow Dave - that is amazing

thanks for the good info. Can you imagine what it would be like if the media actually reported it favorably?

Dee,

My guess is this is headed for the same amount of MSM coverage that the 3% approval rating for the way the congress is handling the war got.

I bet the dimtwit congress critters will be paying attention to this, though. This poll, coming out right on the heels of the Brookings Institution report, probably means that a lot of drug stores around the DC area are running low on antacids right about now.

The dimtwits have wagered their political futures on our defeat in Iraq. I hope they lose big for their blatant treason.

Help Fred defeat everybody.

Dave the surge and the intelligence bill

I agree they probably need some Tums - not only because of the surge and polls but the fact that some Dems were finally brave enough to stand up to the wako leadership with the intelligence bill. Reasonable people can and do disagree regardless of political orientation. The way they have been marching in lockstep with every goofy policy put forth by Pelosi or Reed is scary. It's nice to finally see some independence.

Dee,

The intelligence bill vote was very interesting, in that I think it shows that Nancy Pelussolini and Give 'em up Harry, the leaders of the kook fringe, do not speak for even a major portion of the democrats in congress.

Remember, many of those democrats represent fairly moderate districts, where support for surrendering to the 7th century barabarians is quite low. The people residing in those districts also think it is okay to spy on people who may be planning to do us harm, something the kook fringe seems to have a problem with.

I also am beginning to sense that the effort to pass a lot of the kookier bills Pelosi has been blindly pushing may be building a little resentment among many rank-and-file democrat House members. Let's face it, they haven't gotten much done over the last seven months.

Of course, that bothers me not at all.

Rally online with fans of Dr. Ron Paul.

Sarc - finally saw Ron Paul

on Fox yesterday. I really don't know much about him other than that you like him and that he made some stupid conspiracy comments. I was impressed with him on FOX yesterday. He was clear that he didn't believe that 911 or Iraq was a conspiracy. He actually had the most intelligent argument I've heard for withdrawing troops. I still don't agree with him, but he spoke without demonizing anyone and just giving good reasons why he thought we should get out.

The only thing I didn't like which is one of the things that makes me most  mad with liberals is that they say we should have never gone in because Saddam never had WMD's or ties to the terrorists. First off, I disagree with that statement, but even if true, no one was saying that before we went in (not even Russia, France, China or American Liberals) so to say we shouldn't have gone in should be based on different reasons. The fact that he bases his argument on hindsight makes it seem like he is pandering and doesn't give me faith that he could make the right decision without hindsight.

What do you think about his foreign policy?

He didn't make the

He didn't make the comments, Ms. Banderas tried, and apparently was partly successful, to imply that he did, though. Alex Jones is not Ron Paul. Ron Paul had the temerity to speak on Alex's radio show instead of exclusively being interviewed by Fox News, and as with last time's Fox News interview, there was a focus on trying to tie him to his most extreme supporters one just does NOT see from Fox News with other Republican candidates.

Also, I hope everyone noticed that in the "debate" the only MD on stage wasn't allowed to talk about the only health care question, or asked about health care later, despite a decades-long successful practice in one of the most legally-treacherous professions in all of Doctordom...More antilibertarian bias? I've reported, you decide. :)

Let's agree to disagree about Saddam & the invasion, since I'd have had him killed while he was our "friend" in the '80s or '90s, as Dave Barry suggested. I think the Iraq war was planned well before 9/11, and advocated by some very powerful groups interested in Iraq's oil. I still think US wars shouldn't be for UN or oil company objectives, and instead US wars should be actually-declared, as the Constitution says. That's gone out of style, but I'm old-fashioned about some things.

Here is what Dr. Paul recently wrote about foreign policy. I like the idea of a US foreign policy based more on trade than on military force, because trade does not tend to backfire like force does. Trade has worked, during my lifetime, on a "hot" war in Vietnam a lot better than enforced-no-trade has worked during that same lifetime on Cuba. Are either paradise? No, and neither are a lot of countries. But despite Cuba's proximity, I would probably choose Vietnam first & Cuba second for a visit (assuming I could legally visit Cuba at all, as a "Cuba journalist," since I've written & been published in the past about US Cuba policy I guess I might qualify!).
JMR

Rally online with fans of Dr. Ron Paul.

This is where I think guys

This is where I think guys like Paul display how little they know about foreign policy.  Aside from the sanctions against South Africa back in the 1980s, can anyone list a single time that economic sanctions have been successful?  And why aren't they successful?  Because for every country that rises up against another, there's another greedy country just waiting for the opportunity to make some profit.

Iraq was a perfect case in point.  The US said "we won't deal with you", so the French, Germans, and Russians said "we'll take your money!" Every time we crack down economically on a country, some other country just comes in the back door and puts profits ahead of everything.  This is especially the case in countries that have something that someone else wants.

I agree that military actions are risky, but they are more productive than a diplomatic version of threatening to send some tyrant to bed without dinner.

Questionable reading comprehension?

?? Where did I (or Dr. Paul, for that matter...) advocate any sanctions? I see my advocacy of free trade with Vietnam, instead, and me making fun of the sanctions against Cuba, which have been a bipartisan abject failure all my life. And Dave Barry's suggestion to Bush 1-not-2, which would have cost taxpayers orders of magnitude less than this and would have left our military ready for threats like Iran, etc. was not a cold dinner, it was "a shaving accident involving the loss of his head" perpetrated by a cheap-sounding "department of 2 guys named Victor." We libertarians know all about foreign policy. We've watched it fail under Presidents of both "major" parties, quite a bit...
JMR

Rally online with fans of Dr. Ron Paul.

Sarc,

Sarc,

I noticed Ron Paul didn't mention anything about our "entangling political and military
alliances" with regard to the French. Without which, there may not be a constitution for us to defend. Obviously the founders felt some "entanglements" and "alliances" were necessary. :-)

"There are two types of people in this country; those who provide freedom and those who enjoy it." MM says...

No politician, then or now, is perfect

No politician, then or now, is perfect, and besides that Dr. Paul wasn't given time in the debate for a treatise on American history, though I'm sure he'd do it better than the other candidates if given that time. Some politicians have better ideals than others, though, in our age and back-then too. And Dr. Paul could easily argue that the relationship with France (even the military part against our former king) was free trade, as contemplated by those same founders, but I don't want to put words in Dr. Paul's mouth. He's really not the point of Judge Napolitano's lecture, after all, despite the nice things the Judge does say about the guy.

Anyway, I'm not all that curious to hear how you folks feel about Dr. Paul, I think I know that already. I'm instead curious about how you feel, if you're willing to sit through it, about Judge Napolitano's non-filtered for Fox audiences 4-part remedial ConLaw 101 lecture? Do you see why people like me might oppose some of these new, sweeping federal powers Hillary's at this point likely-as-not to inherit from Bush? Where, specifically, in his lecture do you think the good Judge is wrong (aside, of course, from the mortal sin of saying nice things to/about Dr. Paul!)?? ;) Thanks.

Rally online with fans of Dr. Ron Paul.

sarcasmo - I'm sorry if I caused a tangent

from your subject, but you didn't know how I felt about Paul and it was I who was curious about your feelings. Can't I be curious? : )
I really did think Paul had some good and well reasoned things to say but from what he said I didn't get that he thought it was a war for oil though you seem to imply that you think it was. I may be misinterpreting him or you or both. Anyway, I don't think that just because a war was planned that it means it was preordained or wanted. Our leaders shoud be planning for war with all of our enemies on a contingency basis.

In the case of Iraq, sure oil figures into it, but not to make a few oil executives rich, it figures in because it effects our economic stability and therefore our security and every single person in this country and others . If we were cut off from oil before we were ready our economy would collapse. That is why it was in the interest and security of this country to stop Iraq (unfriendly) from taking over the friendly trading partner in Kuwait and becoming closer to threatening another one (Saudi Arabia). That is also why it was necessary to have contimgency plans for war with Iraq when Saddam was not living up to the cease fire agreement.

I can tell you are getting annoyed so I won't continue with this, but I think it's important to discuss. Both you and Paul have made me think a little differently about the situation. I wish I could have the same effect on you. It's not as important to agree as it is to respect where each other are coming from.

Again, sorry for my tangent and I'll try to find the time to watch the video. I can say now though that I don't think Fox censors Judge Napalitano because I've heard him agree with both liberals and conservatives at different times. I really don't think FOX censors. I hardly watch it anymore but I'm sure it's the same.

I don't think it was just

I don't think it was just oil, so you're right. In many ways, the take-down of Saddam was like an extra expensive version of the take-down of Noriega. In both cases, we had a former US intel-asset who'd risen to the top level of leadership in his country, but then refused to "stay bought." In both cases, simply killing the former asset might have been a much cheaper way to achieve the same result. Of course, capitalists like me still question why an explicitly socialist political party in a foreign country deserves any of my tax dollars, but those tax dollars got spent already, and now they're down the drain for good.

I guess we'll have to disagree over whether Saudi Arabia is anything like "friendly." I think they, not Saddam, have been responsible for the decades of hate being indoctrinated into Islam via too much money being owned by an irresponsible & inbred dictatorship. I blame the Saudis for 9/11, so I don't like them a bit. I'm excited about both new and old technologies (from pebble bed nuclear reactors all the way back to actual hemp-capitalism, which would cheaply produce both food and oil on marginal land) that would allow us to quit-paying this dictatorship (which some people don't want to call "a dictatorship").

I do very much respect those who disagree with me on this issue, there are many ways to see foreign policy these days. The Judge Napolitano thing is kinda a perfect Con-Law lecture. He starts with a joke (not the best joke, but funny enough) and ends up scaring you because yes, they really can use cellphones in that Orwellian fashion these days. You can tell the Judge had good law professors, and his talk is much like a good law professor's lecture in how he times it and in the content.

Anyway, I hope what I seem angry at isn't you, but rather, the media bias. Think about it, if we saw ONE Democrat MD on a stage and a health care question got asked, would the "unbiased" moderator really NOT allow that Democrat MD to address the question, and instead let only the NON-MD politicians drone-on? If you believe they would let that happen, and that we'd hear the kind of deafening "only sarcasmo's complaining" silence we hear now, well, I've got some cheap real estate in Florida's Everglades & a bridge in Brooklyn that might interest you... But seriously, let's just face the ugly truth: Whether or not the NB masthead decided it was worth a byline, this discrimination against the sole medical professional on stage when asking a health care question is blatant media bias. No excuses, and no question.

Ha, I feel your pain

Ha, I feel your pain rackie. I live right outside Reading and we thought we'd get the kids one of those pools from toys r us. After installing it we were told we needed a fence and a permit to build a fence and a permit to have the pool. I just have one question. What am I PERMITTED to do on MY PROPERTY these days?!?!

You can't save the Earth unless You're willing to make other people sacrifice. Dogbert the Green Consultant summing up the elite left.

There are many good reasons

There are many good reasons for obtaining permits for building stuff on your property.  In addition building a fence to surround your pool is for the safety of the public.  Now, how big of a "kiddie" pool did you get them as the town may have gone overboard?  One reason for obtaing a permit is to make sure your fence doesnt hit any utilities on your property and another is to make sure it is up to code.  I deal with these issues all the time.

Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark.

Same in my City, rather

Same in my City, rather than county (Florida), we have to have a permit to have a garage sale, it is $5.00. Isn't that insane? We built a wooden swingset for our kids when they were little, and yes we had to have a permit from the City. Crazy.

For those who heard of this----

An excerpt from John Boeher speech:

"In a fateful moment that capped off seven straight months of cynical broken promises, the current leadership thumbed its collective nose at the will of the American people. In one telling instant that has now been viewed by millions of our constituents via the Internet and other means, the Democratic majority revealed it is willing to break any rule, trample on any precedent, and run roughshod over its own Members to defend a left-wing, big government agenda most Americans utterly reject. Then it compounded the gesture on the House floor by stifling Republican efforts to debate the majority’s handling of the incident, and erasing the evidence of its iron-fisted actions from the public record, much as it did with the 215-213 vote itself.

The stolen 215-213 vote wasn’t about us. It was a breach of trust between the Democratic majority and the American people the current majority swore it would work in an open, bipartisan, accountable manner to serve. "

Bonus score!

Just beneath that story, there's a typically scatterbrained editorial by Bill Press, where he rails against Murdoch's purchase of WSJ and the "FOXification of America". I've found Bill Press to be hilarious (in the "laughing AT him" sense) since he first came to my notice as a local ABC affiliate commentator in LA. He just keeps getting sillier and more partisan over time, and this particular column is no exception.

Speaking spanish vs english

KJ...

I too noticed that. Press is all done as far as I can tell anymore. he ought to retire somewhere quietly.

As an aside I just heard on the Grapevine on Fox that the boss's on fire crews in Oregon will be fired if they do not know how to speak spanish, even if it is just one person of say twenty to a crew that does not speak english.

What is wrong with this picture here...the person hired should never have been hired if he cannot speak ENGLISH!

The whole NW is in tinder-box condition, we have heat and no rain here like I have never seen ...ever....and they are going to fire a crew boss for not being able to speak spanish.

God help us all when the whole NW goes up...if it does that is...bad enough already here with fires....more to come I fear greatly.

Law-suits against  this type of action plus the enviro's for numerous reasons are exactly what I would do if my property burns.

(I have worked on and with fire crews, this is ridiculous...it is outrageous, especially if you have to get people from all over the US and Canada) I am just shaking my head...plus furious.

Two young students

Two young students of Middle Eastern decent arrested in South Carolina with the makings of several  pipe bombs in their car, but CAIR says it is not terrorism related. They are saying possibly making rockets, huh. I find this disturbing to say the least. Both of these men are here as students attending school in my home State.

Well if CAIR says so it

Well if CAIR says so it must be a fact eh msh?

Pathetic...in the good old days...CAIR would no longer exist in the country after 9/11....as it should be today as far as I am concerned.

bigtimer, For some reason

bigtimer,

For some reason CAIR has established itself here in the US. Over on HotAir, Robert Spencer has a lot to say about CAIR.
