MRC/NB's Bozell on Hannity & Colmes About Magazine's Derogatory Soldier Tales

  • Bookmark and Share

Brent Bozell, President of NewsBusters parent the Media Research Center, appeared Tuesday night on the Fox News Channel's Hannity & Colmes. Topic: Swirling questions about the accuracy of The New Republic's "Baghdad Diarist," writing under the pseudonym "Scott Thomas," a presumed soldier who has penned derogatory stories about the behavior of U.S. soldiers in Iraq running over dogs, ridiculing maimed Iraqis and playing with the skulls of kids.

Bozell pointed out how the New Republic only says “they know who he is with near certainty,” which is like saying you're “almost pregnant.” Noting that the magazine's editors now promise to look into the accuracy of the stories, Bozell wondered: “Ought not they not to have done that before?” Bozell recited a list of previous media distortions about Iraq, from CBS's National Guard story to exaggerating Haditha, and agreed with Sean Hannity that the magazine has an agenda. Bozell contended the magazine is motivated by wanting to make a statement that “America is wrong in Iraq,” an assertion rejected by Alan Colmes.

The Washington Post on Saturday ran a nice summary by Howard Kurtz. An excerpt:

The column in the New Republic, described as being penned by a U.S. soldier in Iraq, is filled with tales of petty, stomach-churning behavior.

The "Baghdad Diarist," writing under the pseudonym Scott Thomas, says he was "shocked by my own cruelty" as he recounts soldiers getting their kicks by running over dogs with Bradley Fighting Vehicles and playing with Iraqi children's skulls taken from a mass grave.

But now the liberal magazine, responding to questions raised online by the Weekly Standard and other conservative Web sites, is looking into whether the soldier's account in this and two earlier columns can be substantiated.

"The Standard raises some important questions about the piece, and we're investigating them," New Republic Editor Franklin Foer said yesterday. "I've been in touch with several members of the author's unit who corroborate the details under question. And the author has provided compelling responses himself."

Standard Editor Bill Kristol remains unconvinced. "Right now, it looks as if the New Republic has been the victim -- and the perpetrator -- of a fraud," he said. "Many vets and experts have raised questions devastating to 'Thomas' s' credibility. Not a single individual has come forward to confirm any aspect of 'Scott Thomas's' account. And who is 'Scott Thomas' anyway?"

Foer said he and another editor have met "Thomas," whose identity the magazine is protecting to shield him against retaliation from his superiors. He said the soldier's three columns were fact-checked, to the extent possible, before publication, and that he is now trying to resolve the critics' objections "to my complete satisfaction."

The issue of veracity is especially sensitive for the New Republic, which fired associate editor Stephen Glass in 1998 for fabrications that editors concluded had appeared in two-thirds of his 41 articles.

Foer called the soldier "an amazing resource -- a guy who's on the front lines, who has a gift for observation and can write."

Standard writer Michael Goldfarb this week called on the blogosphere to investigate, and many have tapped into experts who challenge key details of the columns. At National Review Online, columnist John Podhoretz questioned whether the writer is "the Stephen Glass of Baghdad." Blogger Michelle Malkin said the diarist's account was "punctuated with red flags and adorned with incredible embellishment."

Some of the anecdotes in the soldier's July 13 "Baghdad Diarist" column read like perfect little melodramas, although other members of his unit have told New Republic editors that they either witnessed or were told about the episodes. The magazine's editors recognize that his friends might be covering for him, according to someone with knowledge of the inquiry. Before publication, this person said, editors contacted people who have served in Iraq to ask whether the incidents sounded plausible.

The diarist described how soldiers in a mess hall had openly mocked a woman -- he wasn't sure whether she was a soldier or contractor -- whose face was severely scarred from an injury presumably suffered in Iraq: "The disfigured woman slammed her cup down and ran out of the chow hall, her half-finished tray of food nearly falling to the ground."...

After inquiries by the Standard, Foer identified the mess hall as being at Forward Operating Base Falcon. Michael Yon, a respected military blogger who spent time with the unit this year, wrote: "That story about American soldiers at FOB Falcon sounds like complete garbage." Other bloggers said military personnel always wear uniforms and could not possibly be confused with contractors.

The diarist wrote of a private who enjoyed using his Bradley vehicle to crash through concrete barriers, corners of buildings "and his favorite target: dogs." He would "suddenly swerve and catch a tail or a leg in the vehicle's tracks. He kept a tally of his kills in a little green notebook."

One commenter at the Ace of Spades blog wrote: "I have been awarded the Army Tracked Driver's Badge for driving a Bradley...There is no way this story is true. A Bradley cannot routinely bust through concrete...It is loud and cannot pivot as quickly and easily as a M113 or M2a1 because of the steering system."

In describing a mass grave -- now said by the New Republic to be near the Baghdad airport -- "Thomas" wrote: "One private, infamous as a jokester and troublemaker, found the top part of a human skull, which was almost perfectly preserved. It even had chunks of hair...He squealed as he placed it on his head like a crown. It was a perfect fit."

In an earlier column, the diarist reported seeing a 9mm shell casing with a "square back." American Spectator staffer John Tabin wrote: "I've Googled in vain for evidence of [a] 9mm cartridge that features a 'square back.'"...

The Weekly Standard's "Worldwide Standard" blog has the best day-by-day updates on developments.

An excerpt from Tuesday's posting by Michael Goldfarb:

....Meanwhile, it's been a week since we first contacted the New Republic with our questions about this piece, and, to date, the magazine has failed to produce a single piece of evidence that corroborates "Thomas"'s account. In that time, not a single person has stepped forward to say that they remember a woman, described by "Thomas" as horribly disfigured by an IED, at FOB Falcon. In fact, many have written in to say that they remember no such woman at the base in the past two years -- and one would think that such a woman would be seared into the memory, as it were.

Further, not a single person has come forward to corroborate the existence of a mass grave as described by "Thomas," containing the remains of murdered children. One person reported the possible existence of an unmarked children's cemetery in the area described by "Thomas", but he also reported that the remains were properly handled and reinterred at another site -- that the events described by "Thomas" could not have transpired as reported.

And finally, numerous experts and soldiers have written in to question "Thomas"'s account of a Bradley Fighting Vehicle careening around the streets of Baghdad in an attempt to kill as many stray dogs as possible. These experts tell us that the account could not have happened as "Thomas" describes owing to the mechanics of the vehicle and the position of the driver. Do soldiers kill dogs? On occasion, yes. Do they kill them in this fashion, not according to anyone who has come forward in the past week.

Doubts have also been raised about previous stories written by "Thomas" for the New Republic, most notably the claim that his men stopped their Humvee in knee-deep sewage to change a tire. According to experts and soldiers who have written in to us, the Humvee is equipped with run-flat tires that would make such an operation completely unnecessary.

The bottom line is that many legitimate questions have been raised and the New Republic must now provide evidence to support "Thomas"'s charges. We await the results of their investigation.

Journalistic Standard

Did you all forget the Left-Wing standard of journalism?  WE have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the piece (of crap) is ficticious, otherwise, we are to assume it's accurate.  If there is a tall-tale teller amongst our warriors in Iraq, I hope they find him, and permanently make sure he will never receive honors for his disgraceful military service.

When Mary Mapes, after Rathergate, said no one had proven the documents  false, she was asked if she didn't have the responsibility to verify their authenticity before publishing them. Didn't she say no, she didn't think that was the standard?

As a former Bradley jock, I

As a former Bradley jock, I gotta tell you that you that using a fully loaded M2 Bradley fighting vehichle to chase a dog in order to run it down is DAMN NEAR IMPOSSIBLE!!!!

All the dog would have to do is swerve to the left or right while running and the Bradley would lose the chase.

Now, if the dog were to run out in front of it, the Bradely would not be able to slow down fast enough to avoid it, nor speed up fast enough to run it over.

Unless it's one of those

Unless it's one of those super-secret Cheney/Haliburton designed Silent Stealth Bradleys with the Corvette suspension and Pirelli tracks...

Aw, who am I kidding. If there was anything super-secret involving anything Republican, conservative, or corporate, the NYT would have already published a story about it...

Having read some of

Having read some of Bigtimer's comments, she definitely takes it personally when the Military is called into question and we hear and read the despicable things we have seen in the last few days. I share her rage at these stories and would like meet the likes of whitney brown and billy maher in person so that I can let them know what I feel about them up close and personal. No words, just knoch the f*ck out of them, and if they ask why, do it again. The things I have read about the last few days are disgusting, and in my opinion, should be hanging offenses. The people they are disparaging likely would not agree with me as they fight for these clowns rights as they do mine, and in that, show they are better Americans than I.

Hello to you B.T. Sorry

Hello to you B.T. Sorry about the long response time. I had to help the wife put the kids to bed. Your welocome, but no thanks are really necessary. I think most people here at NB feel the same way as we do. I never served myself. Too rough around the edges in my youth, but I have a deep appreciation for those who have. Although my dad and I have never been too close as my parents divorced when I was young, I am proud of his serving in the Air Force for 20 or 30 years. He got to full benefit retirement, then flew for airlines until his retirement age. I don't think he saw any action, but he did do some recon over Honduras (?) back in the eightys. Anyway, as I said, it gets under my skin when jerks like whitney and bill start mouthing off about that which they have no knowlege or respect for.

If I add one more puke, can I help?.. Ted Rall.. would soooo love to "Bond" with these fellas.. 3 on 2.. might not be fair, so we'll tell them to bring their Mommas.

Their mommas would

Their mommas would definitely be of more concern. These panty wastes wouldn't put up much of a fight, but a night in jail would be small price to pay for some payback on these a$$holes, and it would be an honor to have you there with me.

Either these people are more

Either these people are more brazen becuase they think a democrat is a lock for the White House, or they are desperately afraid of something. Possibly a landslide defeat in '08. I can't tell which yet, but between this, the killitary blog, and Whitney swine's drivel, something is definitely up on the left.

Restless, you hit on

Restless, you hit on several reasons the media has become so brazen, but you need to add a couple more, like they've been getting away with everything from slander to revealing national security information to influencing elections, and they've again tasted the power they had during Vietnam (political and social) and they like the flavor...

Brent did a fabulous job! I

Brent did a fabulous job! I loved how he came back at Colmes. Does anyone think that the media would report great stories of heroism by our soldiers without vetting it carefully and then finding voices of disagreement to downplay that heroism?  Of course not!  Heck, they won't report the true stories of heroism going on there!

TNR wanted to believe this, so they printed it even though there have been serious questions raised before this and even though they know how they are helping the enemy.

I think he let Colmes off

I think he let Colmes off easy. The only rebuttal Colmes could come up with was that Brett was only looking at TNR's "worst-case motivations". He didn't once deny the distinct probability that the whole diarist was lying or made-up.

The New Republic got once

The New Republic got once before...they just got caught again.

Period.

That was a great interview if you can keep from throwing a brick at Colmes, the great thing was Brent just kept laughing while he was rattling off his leftist talking points.

I also like Mr. Bozell's point about the left being blinded by their hatred for America...

Excellent Segment

Bozell:  "I just gave you four examples Alan, of left wing meda bias.  Give me one of right wing media bias" (all of my quotes  paraphrased).

Colmes: "Sputter, sputter, sputter"....change of topic..."sputter some more".

It was a perfect microcosm..  The right vs. left debate on media bias in a nut-shell.

Colmes:  "Maybe it was just bad journalism"  (about the unconfirmed author of the NR war horror author...who may or may not be legit).  Hmmm....bad journalism, eh, Alan?  Looking in the mirror, Alan?

Bozell:  "Ought they not to have vetted him before publishing?"

Sublime.

The Closed Mind Erects Strong Barriers

Scott Thomas is a war criminal.

If you want to find a rat, you look in a rat hole not the regular army.

Scott Thomas is using "stories" he heard or thinks he heard. He is at least a weekend warrior and at worst some reporter hack still fighting the 2000 Gore defeat by pretending to be a soldier.

It is so absolute nonsense in anyone picking up a human skull with hair still on it as for those who know such things can assure you they stink and it is a stink you can not wash off your hands. It has to wear off. That is why ME's all wear latex.

In most cases, no one would be squealing at a mass grave playing with bones as a mass grave stinks so putrid one would wretch or the odor literally takes your breath away. A human is not a coyote. Humans are repelled by rotting flesh.

Scott Thomas is a fake as other military men have exposed him. It would take the DOD about twenty minutes to track down this gluteous orafice which they should.

Then if real or pretending what this creature has done is impersonate a United States soldier, inflamed the enemy, caused the murder of US soldiers and in revealing scuttle that John Ford would never touch and committed treason. For that reason, let Scott Thomas face a real military tribunal and when convicted let his poison pen be hung like him around his neck until he has paid for his war crimes.

Scott Thomas is a war criminal and the New Republic is guilty of war crime propaganda. The New Republic printed this garbage which anyone with a half a wit would see was bogus, because they wanted it to be true. Prosecute the whole cursed bunch to the full extent of military law and let the thud of a hangman's rope echo all through Chris Mathews, Keith Olberman, Judy Woodruff, Brian Williams, the Boston Globe, New York Times and Ariana Huffington's site with a tune that when this ilk gets United States soldiers murdered they will answer for it.

This is not a political game where Obama, Hillary, Christiane and Anderson go home to martini's, but is war where real American kids are being killed by these propagandist muck rakers.

Since Abu Gharib all of the US deaths are on this ilks head. They created the slaughter pit for political gain and it is time the US military buried their treasonous corpses in it after trial.

No where in the world does the press get away with betraying a nation and getting it's soldiers murdered.

Concur with your statement

Concur with your statement regarding the falsity of the claims.  During the First Gulf war my unit spent an evening in a position near some burned up Iraqi equipment.  THe smell of burned flesh kept us from exploring the MTLB's and BMP's that were nearby.

Rotting flesh from an opened grave is even worse and I have never heard of anyone being able to clown around in such an event.

Thank you for the video as I

Thank you for the video as I was not able to catch this on FNC. Way to represent Brent!!

Even if every accusation is

Even if every accusation is true, am I to assume that in every war the US or any other civilized country has been involved in that illegalities and extremely bad taste was not commited?

Perhaps he should direct his comments to US citizens since we have committed much more heinous things.  Are soldiers not human?

The man is a moron!

Does this remind anyone

Does this remind anyone else of the infamous John Kerry testimony about the atrocities he was told about and witnessed back in Viet Nam?  I am willing to bet that these Thomas stories today will turn out to be as made up as Kerry's stories back then.

Concur on this.

Concur on this.   "Genghis Khan" stories....

Purely designed for political effect.

}}}----> Ambulance Chasers

What if, behind every ambulance there was a reporter trying to get a scoop that the driver didn't use the turn signal?

A Shyster Subsidy (big government)

Well, paying 90% of corporate profits (with 40% of that going to the politically-connected shysters, as with the equally-corrupt tobacco lawsuit payoff) beats getting thrown in jail, which is what happens if you misbehave using the same chemicals on a retail, instead of wholesale, way. (I know, "the temerity of that sarcasmo guy for following the money & thereby questioning the 'morality' behind our perfectly-consistent, holy tax & spend drugwar!!")
JMR

}}}----> And your point is?

1/20/06:  Cecil Bryon Knox III, age 56, of Roanoke, Virginia, was sentenced to five years probation for racketeering, illegal distribution of prescription drugs, illegal distribution of marijuana to a patient, and health care fraud.

Knox pled guilty to the charges in September pursuant to a plea agreement.

My point is that the wealthy

My point is that the wealthy executives represented by Rudy got 0 days in jail, but various pain doctors (like Hurwitz, who you conveniently didn't-mention -- people should go read the whole article rather than your rather-selective quote...) have gotten a lot of time in the slammer. Same substance, and if anything the drug company misbehavior was WORSE than that of any individual doctor. Same-as-usual hypocrites and money involved, I just inconveniently followed said money, unlike the NYT. I mean, you don't suppose the differential in legal treatment could be because of large pharmaceutical political contributions, could it?? Nah. Not possible. Our shyster-politicians are pure as the driven snow. That's my point. A plea agreement isn't proof of anything but big government power.
JMR

}}}----> You're right sarc

I conveniently didn't mention any of the others because I took two steps into your 2004 article and wanted to know if there was yet an outcome of the charges.

I found the 2006 guilty plea and dropped further inquiry.

Why should I do your research when the first injustice out of the blocks ends with an admission of guilt?  Yes, I've got time to do it, but you didn't exactly open with a shocker.

If you honestly want me to

If you honestly want me to believe that a pain doctor's guilty plea means anything in this political environment, you're asking too much and (obviously...) researching too-little. Read, or stay ignorant of the effects of big government. Your choice. And the underlying fact remains. The wealthy executives got 0-time for what looks like a worse crime. And the true irony is that this story mirrors heroin's history as a "cure" for morphine addiction, but heaven forbid noticing history...

Prescriptive Practices

I know the number one prescriber of narcotics in the country.  The physician's prescriptive practices are monitored by the State Pharmacy Board and probably the DEA as well, just like all physicians that prescribe narcotics.  The reason the number one prescriber of narcotics is not on trial or in jail is because he uses narcotics in a clinically acceptable fashion and he documents appropriately in the patient's charts.

The physician's that are brought to trial do not follow acceptable medical practices for either assessment for the narcotics (type, strength, number of doses) or charting or both.

BTW, there are two competing views on pain management for chronic pain.  One view is there is no ceiling on the use of narcotics for pain.  If pain is not controlled, then just up the dose in hopes that pain will eventually be controlled.  The largest narcotics prescriber in the country ascribes to this view.  The other view is that if narcotics at customary doses do not help then the focus of pain needs to be treated with different modalities such as biofeedback, physical therapy/activity, nerve block/ablation, psychologic/psychiatric care, non-narcotic medications, etc..  I know a pain management group that ascribes to this view and have a proven track record.

Killing them with kindness isn't working.  Time to get scrappy with the Donkeys.

So I take it you disagree

So I take it you disagree with this guy from the first not-so-carefully-read link above? :

"Few disagree that pain is already poorly treated in the U.S. 'Even the
DEA admits that 30 to 50 million people are undertreated for pain
,'
says Ronald Libby, a professor of political science at the University
of North Florida who has studied the issue
."

If UNF professor Ronald Libby's wrong, then I suppose there's no problem. If the reason it's all in my imagination is because you know of a single pain specialist who has so far gotten away with practicing pain medicine then you'll have to pardon my constant doubts and continual linking to Reason articles covering the subject, I guess...

And, needless to say, my original point about the different "justice" system treatment of big political contributing pharma-execs and docs stands, despite varied and creative attempts to change the subject. I followed the money, and (as in the Mexican money mountain case) found political corruption. Again.

Misdirects and Standard of Care

I was responding to the issues of why/how one physician is charged with inappropriate narcotic dispenstaion and another is not.  You mention nothing in reply to my post on this subject.

The pain management doc that doesn't rely as much as his counterpart on narcotics for pain control happens to do quite well with controlling his patient's pain.  Some (many?) will get angry that he suggests non-narcotic modalities and leave only to return when the narcotics from another doctor still don't relieve the pain to their satisfaction as he counselled them on.  Your accusations are groundless and ignorant of the principles and practices of Medicine.  Why you resort to aggressive juvenile arguments and insults is only known to you.  It is counterproductive and annoying behaviour when attempting to exchange information.

Your reply also changes the focus of my post to something I was not discussing.  I'll reply to your taunts in the hopes that something more than a pissing match can be realized.

To get this out of the way early, yes, maybe the pharmaceutical company folks deserved prison time for purposefully lying about the properties/characteristics of their product.  Start a petition, write to your political representatives and run for office if you want change instead of browbeating fellow NB's.

The issue of undertreated pain is real.  How many I do not know.   The fear concerning overzealous investigation and prosecution certainly is on every physician's mind if they prescribe narcotics.  Like most everything else in medicine, there are guidelines in how one should prescribe and document the use of narcotics.  Following these generalized and specific guidelines will typically prevent prosecution for criminal activity.

Physicians are not prosecuted for occasionally being fooled by drug seekers.  A pattern of being "fooled" usually results in state enforced re-education of practice guidelines initially, with prosecution and/or permanent revocation of licensure happening for repeat offenders or gross misconduct..

Still, many primary care physicians will send chronic pain patients to a pain management specialist and then will prescribe narcotics based on the specialists recommendations.  Doing so adds a layer of insulation from prosecution, but only a thin veneer in reality.  A physician is expected to perform their duties in a comparable fashion as any other physician of the same specialty in their state.  It's called "Standard of Care", and, physician's have been prosecuted for not controlling pain adequately.

There has been a movement for several years within the medical community to educate physicians on how to prescribe and document narcotics appropriately in order to stay out of the courtroom.  It is a slow process since many physician's have already surrendered their abilities and roles in aggressively treating pain.  The reasons are several and include both governmental and private legal entities bringing cases against physicians, a belief, right or wrong, on the complexities in treating pain, administrative hassles of dealing with chronic pain, and, the narcotic seeking patient hassles.

Chronic pain management was acquiesced to specialists, aptly named "pain management specialist" 20 years ago or so.  Why else would there be this new discipline?  My suggestion for changing how and which physician's treat pain is to focus on medical school student and residents.  Educate them rigorously in pain management so that they will have the expertise and a comfort level for treating pain, especially chronic pain.  If "ethics in medicine" can be squeezed into the curriculum then surely pain management could be as well.

Killing them with kindness isn't working.  Time to get scrappy with the Donkeys.

1. Your post mentioned but

1. Your post mentioned but one single doctor, who I mentioned. The idea that the "justice" system does this kind of thing well or fairly is belied by a series of Reason articles which have shredded it logically right here.

2. What again is the "juvenile" insult I made?? Be specific, please.

3. The FACT of differential treatment for the politically well connnected executives vs the doctors is not any "taunt," it's my original point (see above). It still stands, like it or not, because it's a FACT instead of a "taunt," even if the FACT seems to taunt you.

4. The DEA seems to think it's 30-40 million undertreated, according to the article/professor you have yet to address...As for my solution, aside from "browbeating" fans of the tax and spend drugwar (yep, that's gonna continue, like it or not) I'm working to elect Dr. Ron Paul.

5. You just admitted, and I quote: "many physician's[SIC] have already surrendered their abilities and roles in aggressively treating pain." That's MY point, why would they do that if there were not a big government threat you'd like to ignore. What's yours??

story in his eyes

More sugar! Colmes tried to defend the liberal position of the New Republic but without success.  You could tell just by looking at Colmes that he did not believe his own argument.  He knows, Hannity knows, and Bozell knows that it is common knowledge that the New Rupublic promotes an anti-Bush agenda.  This is actually common knowledge being disguised as some sort of argument which mitigates the NR's guilt.  Bozell was correct when he said the idea was just to get the concept out there.  The veracity of it becomes secondary.

Something is rotten in Denmark

Something is rotten in Denmark and it ain't the fish!

Something is sticking up the New Republic once again, and it's another slimy "wanna-be."

Let's guess, he's really a guy, some lefty nerd in his underwear, in his parent's basement that has played a few too many "first shooter" video/computer games. He may have "attempted" to be in the military but "wimped" out before ever getting to the intital physical. This "dude: also attends "protest parties" in "stolen" fatigues. He "knows" someone in the military, and took their uniform to attend "Peace" rallies and stink camps.
