Heart Attack Survivor: ABC Distorted My Story (Updated: ABC Defends)

UPDATED BELOW: ABC RESPONDS

Six years ago, Joe Cameron survived more than two months on life support, racking up a bill of more than $1 million. He paid less than $2,000 thanks to the health insurance he had through Medicare Advantage. Needless to say, he's pleased with his outcome, and now speaks highly of the program that paid for his life-saving care.

But in a segment December 19, "Good Morning America" portrayed Cameron as a shill for the insurance industry. Host Chris Cuomo called Cameron "a favorite example for the insurance industry," saying he is a go-to interviewee when they don't want to talk about cases like Angela Dispenza, who claims her insurance company refused to pay for medically necessary rehabilitation after a back injury.

Cuomo said the insurance company refused interview requests for his story, and that the company referred ABC News to Cameron to America's Health Insurance Plans (AHIP), the insurance industry's national association.

"What UnitedHealthcare didn't tell us is Cameron has been flying around the country to lobby in favor of the program," Cuomo said, splicing in footage of Cameron meeting with President Bush.

So does he get paid to praise private insurance and Medicare Advantage? "Hell no," Cameron told the Business & Media Institute in a telephone interview Wednesday. "They have never paid me one dime compensation."

"Around the country," as Cuomo said, amounts to one trip to Washington, D.C., to meet with elected officials - including President Bush - about Medicare Part D, Cameron said.

Cameron said he has taken three other trips to the nation's capital at the expense of outside organizations like the Coalition for Medicare Choices, an AHIP-affiliated organization that took Cameron to a conference in Washington, D.C., in October featuring several hundred beneficiaries, and RetireSafe, a grassroots organization that advocates a free-market approach to Medicare.

"It irritated ... me very badly because I am not representing any insurance company in respect to my story," Cameron told BMI. "I'm angry now cause of the way they did me, because they made the implication that I was affiliated with the insurance companies, that they were flying me all over the nation and that I'm their spokesperson," Cameron said. "I'm not their spokesperson. I'm speaking for Joe Cameron."

Cuomo did not respond to requests for comment on Cameron's complaints.

UPDATE: In an e-mail to the Business & Media Institute Thursday, "Good Morning America" spokeswoman Bridgette Maney said, "Our reporting was based on a number of interviews with Mr. Cameron and the story is accurate."

This is standard practice

This is standard practice in many other areas besides the media... Global Warming springs immediately to mind...

Whatever is politically and sociologically acceptable is treated this way:  1. Preconceived idea, 2. Collect only supporting data, 3. Ignore conflicting data, 4. Present the idea as fact, 5. Declare the debate over - even to the point of defaming the opposition in some way.

Millions of people are deceived by this.

MattM, and those millions

MattM, and those millions vote.   I really wish the ignorant and uninformed stay home on 11/8/08.

What?

The media lying and/or stretching the truth to advance their story? I'm shocked!

I am getting so sick of the lying basturds. May the old liberal MSM go down in flames for Christmas.

Rush Limbaugh stated that of the top 5 Republicans running for the presidency, only one was a true conservative. http://www.fred08.com/

I second the motion!

I second the motion! In 2004 I was the victim of a violent crime, I was shot four times, face, shoulder, upper thorax and left forearm. Thanks to the majesty of the healing power in Jesus' name, I walked out of the hospital eight days later with strangers unable to tell where on my face I had been shot. I told one of my doctors that this would be the case and as he didn't "believe" I told him that I was going to "anoint" my face with oil consecrated in Jesus' name BUT that I would leave all the other bullet holes alone. Over the eight day span the doctors were amazed as the hole that went completely through my face, breaking both sides of my jaw, healed at a disproportionate rate to the other wounds. To this day there remains no mark on my face and my career remains as it was. I realize that's a little off topic but I thought it might encourage someone as we approach the birth of the savior. Here's the "on topic" part. My med bills were over thirty thousand dollars, the cost to me? My two hundred and fifty dollar deductible! That's what the Jesus and the SAG-PH insurance did for me! So , I have NO PROBLEMA with the health care system in this country. Merry Christmas and Jesus Bless you ALL!!!!!

Keith... Wow...miracles

Keith...

Wow...miracles do happen, I know that too...

Merry Christmas to you...stay healthy.

Medicare Part C = Medicare Advantage (aka Medicare+Choice)

Are only people with bad stories allowed to lobby or speak out? I would think that they would want him to praise government-run "health insurance" (Medicare Part C = Medicare Advantage). Medicare is the worst "health insurance" possible for the money - so much so that 75% have supplemental coverage despite us spending >$6000 per beneficiary per year not including supplementals, out-of-pocket, and Part D.

I don't know that I would

I don't know that I would agree with the premise that Medicare is the worst health insurance for the dollar. One thing that is an issue with Medicare is the CMS pass-through, which results in only about 75 cents of every dollar budgeted to CMS makes it out to members or insurance companies. So out of that $6,000 you have budgeted per member, only about $4,500 is really available to service each member. That comes out to about $375/month to provide healthcare to folks who 99% of them are over 65 years old, so that's not too shabby in my book.

Also, folks who are enrolled in Medicare Supplement and Advantage plans don't do it because the Medicare benefits are so bad. Both Medicare Supplement and Advantage plans only cover what Medicare covers, so if Medicare won't pay for a service or procedure, the supplemental plan won't either. All these plans do is pay for the co-pays and co-insurance stuff that Medicare requires them to pay, usually 20%, and that's pretty good by most non-Medicare plans, which can require up to 30% co-pays these days.

I love reading stories like

I love reading stories like this! Too bad the MSM just can't tell you the whole story. I would like to hear them explain to people how Medicare Advantage works, that being that Medicare pays an insurer "X" number of dollars per year for each person enrolled in the plan, and the insurer pays each person's claims out of those dollars. The goal is to end each year without having to pay out more inclaims than was received from Medicare. Mr. Cameron is an excellent case of why HMOs are needed. Medicare sure didn't pay United Healthcare a million dollars for Mr. Cameron's coverage, not even 5% of that number. So where did all the other money come from? It came from the money that was received for folks who didn't have a lot of claims or money that was saved by making sure services were actually needed.

As for Ms. Dispenza, she sounds like a classic example of one of these folks who justify why we never want universal healthcare. I don't know of any insurance plan that won't cover a service that's medically necessary, and the bar for determining that is set pretty low. In most cases all you need is a phone call from your doctor. What I've found is that the words "refused to pay for" usually means that the plan would cover most of the costs, but the patient is also responsible for 20% copayment/co-insurance and for a deductible.

Coming back to universal healthcare, our current insurance rates are, like automobile insurance rates, largely influenced by patient responsibilities like deductibles and copayments. The higher they are, the lower the cost of the premium. The goal of the Democrats is to provide health insurance to those who can't afford the premiums, but if a person can't afford to pay $100 or $200 a month in premiums, how are you going to expect them to pay a $1,500 deductible or a $2,000 co-pay? Short answer is you can't, especially when a bunch of whiney UHC members start showing up on The View, KO, Travis Smiley, The Today Show, and all the other Lib outlets and decry how unfair it is that they still have to pay some part of their healthcare bills. Anyone who thinks providing insurance to these folks is the worst of it is in for a shock. We're going to be paying the premiums, the co-pays, the deductibles, and everything else that we have to pay ourselves on our own plans.

Professional Victim

Do you think ABC will do an expose of union activist, and professional victim Steve Skrva who cries that he can't afford insurance for his wife and flies around the country for John Edwards.

Didn't ABC over his staged question at a town hall meeting where he said:

Every day of my life, I sit at the kitchen table across from the woman who devoted 36 years of her life to my family, and I can't afford to pay for her health care. What's wrong with America? And what will you do to change it?

Well I guess you know it all

Except I do, I was there when Ms. Dispenza arrived with a broken back, and could not ever be sent home alone to fend for herself. She was in intense pain and could not even get out of bed. Her Insurance company refused to permit her even a single night stay in the hospital. The hospital admitted her anyway. Her insurance company refused the request later to allow her to undergo at least minimal rehabilitation to help her function at home. The hospital again provided the care at its own cost. Care that the insurance company is obligated to pay for not the hospital. She could not just be sent home to die and that is what would have happened. I am far from a Liberal and I also despise much of the media's tactics but you don't have all of the facts here. As far as Mr. Cameron, I don't know those details and that is between him and ABC.

Good Case

You have just made a great case against socialized medicine where a Politbureau makes patient care decisions.

For the record, who was Ms Dispenza's insurer?

failure of socialism

Did you read the recent UK article (here) about the mum that wasn't able to give birth at the hospital because they closed the maternity ward to new admissions... told to go to a different one, and instead, due to the baby wanting to get out, had the baby at her house?

Mum is now blaming her Post-Partum (Post-Natal) depression on the fact that she gave birth at home. I wonder if Tommy-boy Cruise has some good advice for her!

I really think that questioning others' masculinity is a game probably better left to people who haven't had more cock in and out of them than a Tyson Chicken regional distribution center. AceOfSpades 06162007

Chris Cuomo

What Chris Cuomo failed to mention is that he himself is the go-to interviewer who is a a shill for the marxist/socialist left-wing led by Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and George Soros. As we see with a 13% approval rating Democrat control is useless and powerless even when they have the majority. Government can't control anything and they want to take over health care. If Hillary is elected don't get too attached to grandma, grandpa or anyone any age with a catastrophic disease. The hallmark of Clinton's  health care plan is euthanasia. First abortion, now euthanasia. What's next, death to conservatives or anyone who does not agree with her?

Recent health care stories in my family

I had a minor health care concern two weeks ago. Called my Doc at 1:30 PM and was asked if I could be in by 2:00 PM. My Doc gave me tender loving care (I do prefer the female touch), and sent on my way to the pharmacy owned by my neighbor.

Last week, my adult daughter had some concerns re abnormal cells. That's probably enough info, unless she wants to post. She went to her Doc and was immediately referred to a specialist. She saw the guy within two days. Her concerns have been resolved, thankfully, she's okay.

Can we do something to improve health care for poor people in America? Yes.

Can the politicians improve the health care system for poor people without ****ing  it up for everybody else. I seriously doubt it.

I'm a unapologetic, selfish SOB when it come to the health care of my loved ones, and myself, for that matter. When the politicians and lawyers  become our primary care providers, we will all stand in line for service as if we are at the freaking Post office.

BTW, Newsbusters, Merry Christmas! It's great to be alive.

True Story

My mother in law is diabetic and has been having trouble with her eyes, requiring laser surgery. She has been unable to work and has been denied TWICE for disability (thanks government). She has had to have these surgeries at least twice a month, sometimes once a week at $250+ a pop. The doctor understands that she has no income and has not charged anything except a $20 dollar thing that was a mistake. He offered to take it back but she said it was ok, she could pay it after all he had done.

Now, what is wrong with this healthcare system? There are programs to get your medicine for free. A lot of doctors will work some kind of payment plan if you dont have insurance. Some just do it for free. I have seen how much heath care adds up, but I have also seen tons of instances like this.

Yet another example of the MSM

putting forth a story that is "fake but accurate", at least accurate in so far as it matches with their ideology and already decided conclusions.

The MSM in this country is no better than the Soviet "news agencies" of the '70s and '80s.

The day that "politician" became a career choice is the day we started losing the Republic. Let's get it back! Alan Keyes '08.

ABC loves Teddy Kennedy and Rockefeller Health Torture

I invested enough time in investigating the health INDUSTRY and found some key points.

Rockefellers control ALL the AMA doctors and schools.

Rockefellers decide on what treatments are viable and all of those pills, radiation and butchery basically only last as long as the patient's money and insurance hold out.

For example, in a blog I wrote last year, I noticed that cigarettes are "bad" and wondered why they were "bad" for the health INDUSTRY as it makes people sick and they profit........

WRONG. See like Rush Limbaugh stated smoking actually does have benefits in keeping people healthy from colds ect... The problem is that when side effects like cancers do develope is they are so fast moving in smokers due to weakened health systems that the INDUSTRY does not get the opportunity to irradiate the bodies for 18 months for profit when the treatment just happens to run out at the same time health insurance does.

If you have understanding, you can relate why the big seat belt push was on. It had nothing to do with keeping people safe........but it had to do with the fact that in car crashes most people die, BUT if seat belts are employed then the bashed in bodies usually survive long enough as in 48 hours to be hooked up to machines where the medical industry can then waste a week at high insurance intensive care at thousands of dollars a day before the family is told insurance will not pay any more and then the plug is pulled.

ABC is pure gluteous maximus orifice, because they know Teddy Kennedy set up the health industry for the Rockefellers which drove up prices in changing it from a medical assistance into a medical industry.
To malign Mr. Cameron for a system they are profiting from.......oh yes just look at the big shots in just what they are invested in and it is meds and pharms as that is where the billion dollar profits are.........is pure lies.

This entire industry has so propagandized and terrorized Americans into thinking "quality of life" is radiation poisoning when Royal Rife and now modern treatment is showing radio waves will treat cancer better without any vomit..........is as Nazi as pumping pills into heart patients knowing that the heart pills will cause diabetes.

This cartel has so terrified people from dying that people will do anything to survive in pure horror.........oh of course until Terri Schiavo's insurance runs out then "death is beautiful" in dehydrating someone in a criminal murder.

I would like to quote Billy Dixon, for those who do not know him, he is the basis for Tom Selleck in Quigley Down Under and most of Lonesome Dove etc.... in he made a shot in an Indian fight at about 1 mile with an old Buffalo Rifle. He also won the Congressional Medal of Honor in surviving an Indian attack in a buffalo wallow.......so he knew death and he watched people die.

Bill Dixon said, "In the last moments death is not cruel at all in nature. There is no fear. It is welcome as it wraps you up in a warm embrace and you leave the world in peace".

The point in this is American citizens deserve to know that death is not a terrifying thing to dread. It is natural and when allowed to play out God has designed the body to give great peace and the pain mechanisms shut down.

Right now the medical industry is so prolonging existence that people are being tortured to death and usually have to be drugged to oblivion to deal with the pain.

My cousin died of breast cancer, no treatment.........she lasted as long as women who were treated. Another cousin had colon cancer.....she lasted exactly without treatment without puking and loosing her hair as people who took the industry torture.

I know the networks have covered stories recently in a clinic which is not fringe which is using radio frequency treatments on cancer. I hope more information on all of this comes out so the torture will stop of the American ill as what is going on now is pure disaster.

Katie Couric pisses and moans about bridges.........how the hell about a government mandate that all hospitals must upgrade from knife surgery in pendicitus to the new lasers........just like dentists using the new laser methods instead of that horrid grinding from drills.

Fix health care and make it caring with a pay as you can.......and stop this industry of torture.
