Mainstream Media Marvel Over Michelle

By Mike Bates | May 25, 2011 | 21:16

Mike Bates's picture

The mainstream media are demonstrating that their fawning coverage isn't limited to President Barack Hussein Obama.  The establishment press loves Michelle LaVaughn every bit as much.  Today's Washington Post Politics Web site carries the story "Michelle Obama wows Britain with high style, rubs shoulders with new royal Kate Middleton."  The article substantiates its claim that Mrs. Obama dazzled the English with support from an impartial, disinterested observer.  I know she's impartial because she authored a book titled "“Everyday Icon: Michelle Obama and the Power of Style.”

On NPR's Web site, the headline is "Michelle Obama Wows Britain With Her Style."  The accompanying Associated Press article begins:

There weren't any hugs, like last time, but U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama shared a warm handshake with the British queen and gained more fans during her state visit to the U.K.

How does the AP know that Mrs. Obama gained fans?  Did they take a survey pre- and post-warm handshake?

The Sky News Australia Web site also headlines "Michelle Obama wows UK with her style."  On its Web site, People reports: "Michelle Obama brought her signature colorful, feminine style to the British capital on Wednesday, dazzling in an array of elegant designs."  On NBC New York's blog called Thread/NY, "the inside line on New York fashion," we learn "First Lady Earns High Marks in Tom Ford at Buckingham Palace."  Who issues those marks?  Does he grade on a curve?

Over at Access Hollywood, the story is "Glam Slam: Michelle Obama’s Drop Dead Gorgeous Gown."  The piece starts:

Wow. Wow. Wow. What a dress.

Just have to take a moment today to admire (and pay tribute to!) First Lady Michelle Obama’s beautiful gown. She looked like a goddess at last night’s State Dinner at Buckingham Palace in London!

The ruched, ivory, georgette evening gown with ribbon details is by Tom Ford, one of several American designers she has worn during her visit to the UK. Stunning.

Insert whistle here.

The ultra flattering gown showed off Mrs. Obama’s toned arms and shoulders. The First Lady wore her hair in an up-do with long, dangly earrings.

Ooh.  I was hoping they'd get to those toned arms and shoulders.  Verily, a true goddess.

I think we're getting the message.  Much of the mainstream media love, love, love Michelle Obama.  Maybe she didn't wow Britain, but she certainly captivates the establishment press.

British Press Not So Impressed

Submitted by mrt721 on Wed, 05/25/2011 - 11:01pm.

The tanned Duchess of Cambridge blew Michelle Obama out of the water

"So, the softly tanned new Duchess of Cambridge met Michelle Obama and, nuclear submarine cutbacks or no, she blew her American rival out of the water."

"My only gripe with Kate is her hair, which is now a little too long, and too flicked at the ends.
Michelle Obama, on the other hand, looked like a little girl in a too short pink bolero (I hate boleros – and only six-year-olds should wear pink!) that my fashion spies tell me is not even vintage, it’s just old. Ouch."

Prudent princess in £175 dress shows wife of President and PM that style doesn't need to cost a lot

"For 10 long days there were no new pictures of Catherine in Zara, LK Bennett, Whistles or Warehouse items that caused the chain's websites to crash within hours.
But, while the Duchess did not disappoint - stepping out in a £175 Reiss dress for her first post-wedding engagement - both Michelle Obama and Samantha Cameron decided to show off their style credentials in designer items that cost more than six times that amount."

"But, despite the extra expense, Mrs O. was still, perhaps unsurprisingly, upstaged by the svelte young royal - showing that even money cannot compete with youth."

Then there was this:

Michelle Obama’s Hair Drama! Did She Mean To Arrive In Ireland Looking Like The Grinch?

"First Lady Michelle Obama arrived in Ireland in dramatic fashion on May 23, sporting a wild Grinch-esque coif as she disembarked Air Force One! Michelle, we hope this wasn’t the look you were going for…"

Over-Praise Should be taken as an Insult

Submitted by Chris Norman on Thu, 05/26/2011 - 1:59am.

Once again, the media overdoes the praise of Michelle Obama (and her husband) which reeks of the condescension of soft racism. It reminds me of a supportive parent overpraising their non-athletic child for coming in second to last in a race. In the Obama's case, it's all a little too much - well, a lot too much..

It's the "soft bigotry of low expectations" again...

Submitted by motherbelt on Thu, 05/26/2011 - 7:09am.

I've been saying that for a while now....

Just like with her husband, they have to inflate everything with her.

The most hideous outfits (and there have been many) are praised as fantastic. She doesn't just represent her country well, she just WOWS them everywhere she goes. She's not just welcomed, they are just all agog to be in her presence!

It reminds me of a quote from Samuel Johnson about a dog walking on its hind legs:

It is not done well; but you are surprised to find it done at all."

That about sums it up.

That reminds me of one of my favorite songs. I think I got the from the National Lampoon magazine in the 70s.

I've got a dog, his name is Rover.
He is the smartest dog I know.
He can walk up on his hind legs,
if you hold his front legs up!

President Obama is a Muslim (from his own lips), Kenyan (read it from his publicist) a homosexual (read it on a news magazine cover) and a Socialist (I'm alive and can see it for myself)

I've held it back too long.

Submitted by Boil It Down on Thu, 05/26/2011 - 2:17am.

I just shake my head when these "journalists" call Michelle Obama beautiful, poised, brilliant etc. Now, I try to avoid making negative judgements about peoples appearances and women in particular, but this stuff is just too much.

I do not find her particularly attractive in the first place. The comments like "power of style" and such really got to me. When I was trying to describe how I view her general stature to my 88 year old mother see read my mind. She called her movements like a lumbering, stoop shouldered farm hand.

I don't know much about women's clothes, but I do recognize clothes that accentuate the wrong things about a woman's figure. For instance, big women should not wear bold, bright colors and if they do, they have to be very careful. Women with men's shoulders shouldn't expose them and stuff like that. Michelle just gets it wrong in my eye.

All in all, these glowing descriptions of Michelle just don't match her appearance, gracefulness or sophistication to me. I'm sorry, but I just had to get this out.  -bidn-

Without criticizing Michelle Obama's looks or style, the gushing praise of her by the media isn't warranted. To me, it comes off sounding condescending, phony, and a little creepy. See my comment above.

It really is an insult and phony. I'm a singer and know my talent is good enough for entertaining in bars and wedding receptions, but I'm not American Idol material by any means. When people come up gushing and telling me how wonderful they think I am, I take a step back and find them suspicious. (1) they want something or (2) they're drunk. -bidn-

I saw a picture of MOwookie with Duchess Kate(?), It took me some time to realize MO was even in the picture, my focus was on Kate ( she, and many ladies, would look better than MO if they were wearing a potato sack and MO had spent 1,000's of dollars.). Left out one fact.

I'm sure that we, the taxpayers, paid for those drapes that were used to make Moochie's outfit, and also for the 1000 yards of mummy wrap for the state dinner gown, while Newt paid for his wife's jewelry with his own money.

That  (using your OWN money) is a concept that liberal politicians can't seem to grasp.

I guess the UK media isn't fawning over him like they did in the beginning anymore.

Submitted by iveseenitall on Thu, 05/26/2011 - 11:48am.

Michelle is neither beautiful nor brilliant. It's all part of the phony fawning media bias toward the left. But Michelle "never been so proud" has always gotten a pass. Funny, that Smith jackass grilled Newt the other day about his wife's private spending habits but I never heard old Harry grill Barry about his wife's " part time " $320,000 job at the hospital in Chicagoland - one that mysteriously went away after big ears was elected.[ Never,Never trust a "liberal" (progressive)]
