"PROMISES, PROMISES: Obama rhetoric, reality clash" is today's offering from Liz Sidoti, the Associated Press White House correspondent. The piece begins with a harsh assessment:
Barack Obama's optimistic campaign rhetoric has crashed headlong into the stark reality of governing.
In office two months, he has backpedaled on an array of issues, gingerly shifting positions as circumstances dictate while ducking for political cover to avoid undercutting his credibility and authority. That's happened on the Iraq troop withdrawal timeline, on lobbyists in his administration and on money for lawmakers' pet projects.
But just wait. Although it's true that Obama is breaking promises faster than he made them, we can't hold that against him. Sidoti explains:
It's the same delicate dance each of his predecessors faced in moving from candidate to president, only to find he couldn't stick exactly by his word. Each was hamstrung by his responsibility to the entire nation and to individual constituencies, changes in the foreign and domestic landscapes, and the trappings of the federal government and Washington itself.
Story Continues Below Ad ↓Once in the White House, presidents quickly learn they are only one part of the political system, not in charge of it. They discover the trade-offs they must make and the parties they must please to get things done. Inevitably, they find out that it's impossible to follow through completely on their campaign proposals.
Take, for example, the fact Obama signed Porkulus, a massive spending measure that included more than 8,000 earmarks. According to Sidoti:
He had little choice. The measure, a holdover from last year, was needed to keep government from shutting down. But to blunt the fallout, Obama outlined guidelines to ensure tighter restraints on the spending and made a new promise: Future earmarks won't become law so easily.
See how that works? Obama broke his promise on earmarks, but made up for it by making a new promise. It's a tough job, but one the messiah has selflessly accepted.
No doubt most presidents have had difficulty keeping their campaign promises. Then again, unlike Obama, most presidents have not enjoyed solid majorities in Congress, a never-ending campaign orchestrated by presidential loyalists, and a fawning mainstream media constantly cheering them on.
The One has all of that going for him. It's still not enough and the mainstream media are already getting their excuses for him in order.

The great reader not communicator
March 21, 2009 - 21:31 ET by Robert S LaRuersl775
Obama gets compared to many people when something of their greatness can be rubbed off or attributed to him. He is often compared to President Reagan and his ability to speak and communicate with the public. What nobody ever mentions is that President Reagan did not have a cheerleading choir in the press or any Main Stream Media outlet. They hit on him from all angles but President Reagan still got through to the public. Obama gets total cheerleading and support on everything he says. The public is told at every chance what a great thing he said and how he handles a situation and how his rhetoric transcends anything in history or will go down in history. Without this cheerleading Obama would go down in flames. I have yet to hear anything that comes close to inspiring even with his TelePrompTer. Little things like Obama saying his treasury secretary has a more difficult situation than Alexander Hamilton so we are supposed assume he knows American history. I don’t think Obama knows anything about Hamilton unless his TelePrompTer tells him. I don’t think Obama could tell you who is on a ten dollar bill unless he read.

March 21, 2009 - 23:34 ET by metaphorsbwithuAmen! I broke a pledge and watched a few minutes of Washington Week on PBS last night and wanted to vomit at the calm, hushed voices and reverential tones in the discussion of the AIG Bonus flap and the President's handling of the economy.
I was amazed when a poll graphic showing poor grades by Republicans AND Independents and Democrats was displayed. The following comments centered on the lack of understanding in the public and the need for Obama to better communicate what he's doing to help the economy.
These people are either lying or have no real clue of what is going on in the nation's heartland.
No mention of Dodd and Geithner's funny business in regard to the AIG bonuses, nor of the public disgust at out-of-control spending and lack of oversight ... the consensus was that Obama simply needs to educate the public better.
Amazing! That was about all I could stand and turned it off.

PS anybody else concerned about the ammunition shortages?
Ammo shortages
March 22, 2009 - 08:38 ET by sam12663I just purchased my first handgun, and was surprised to find out just how hard the it is for dealers to get both guns and ammunition. They said it was due to the fact that so many people are buying guns thinking that Obama will try and repeal the 2nd amendment. I ordered my ammo online, but it will not be available until mid April.
President Obama is nothing more than a empty suit; a Hollywood

Re Ammo
March 22, 2009 - 11:53 ET by slickwillie2001I've read on blogs that the federal government is 'going slow' on ammunition import sign-offs. By simply letting the paperwork pile up they can easily cause a shortage of imported ammunition, and the firearms themselves. Don't know how credible these reports are.
You can also check Wal-Mart. Most states' Wal-Marts still sell handgun ammo as well as rifle and shotgun. It's only the handguns themselves that I believe most of them no longer sell. Their ammo stock comes in regularly but can sell out quickly. You can get lucky if you are there at the right time.
slick, ammo is allready
March 22, 2009 - 12:12 ET by Blazerslick, ammo is allready extremely hard to come by as it is and the prices have risen sharply. A great proportion of .223 and 5.56 cases come from the U.S. military and sent to manufacturer's for reload's. Mysteriosly, for a period last week, those shipment's stopped, without explanation, but resumed again when the N.R.A made a stink about it.
Not to mention gun's themselves are at a premium. I have one 50 rd. box of .40 and four 20 rd. boxes of 7.62x39. The last few times I've gone out to our local gun and sporting good's stores to procure some, the shelves have been empty.
In my life I have never seen a run on gun's and ammo this epic and I'm not talking about just hunting rifles either.
You'd almost think people were worried about the government or something.

You'd
March 22, 2009 - 12:24 ET by UpNorthbetter be at the Wal-Mart when the truck comes in. My wife works in sporting goods at a WM, they can't keep ammo on the shelf. And what they get is limited now, as the manufacturers can't keep up with demand.
Also, downthread, the reason that .223 and .308 was short for a while was because the DoD, for some "unknown" reason, had stopped shipping cartridge cases to remanufacturers. They claimed that a "new" policy was that the cases had to be rendered unusable, and converted to scrap metal, not to be used to reload ammo. After the NRA and other shooting/gun groups contacted enough Reps. and Senators, the "policy" was quickly rescinded.

March 22, 2009 - 20:37 ET by Mike BatesJust got back from a brand new Wal-Mart. A sporting goods clerk there told me they don't sell ammo in any of their Illinois stores.

Their indelicate approach to remaking America into the United States of Chicago and Obama Socialist Republics will backfire hugely in their faces.
As Mark Levin said recently on his radio show, the price they will pay will be swift and stunning political reversal for them in upcoming elections.
And that also means that Barack H. Obama will be a single-term president, unless he does something extra-constitutionally to make that otherwise.
