AP Shows Double Standard on Release of VP Candidates' Tax Returns

The Associated Press reported today that Sarah and Todd Palin have released their 2006 and 2007 tax returns.  The release concluded:

The McCain-Palin campaign had said the tax returns would be released Monday, but it suddenly put them out Friday afternoon — a time long used by government to reveal embarrassing news because few people watch TV or read newspapers Friday evening and Saturday.

Interestingly, Joe and Jill Biden also released tax returns on a Friday. In their case it was September 12.  The AP began its report:

Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Biden and his wife on Friday released a decade of their personal financial records, showing a veteran U.S. senator who earned less than many of his congressional colleagues.

Oddly, no mention was made that Friday is "a time long used by government to reveal embarrassing news."

Nor did the AP note in today's report that the more than $8,000 donated to charity by the Palins in the last two years more than doubles the charitable contributions of the Bidens for the past ten years.

Perhaps there will be embarrassing information in the Palins' tax returns and that's why they were released on a Friday.  But why didn't AP advise its readers of that possibility with the Bidens' returns less than a month ago?

We all know the answer to that question.  But it might be embarrassing for the AP to admit it.  Maybe the news service should wait until a Friday to reveal the answer.

Great double standard example!!

Way to go Michael!

Interestingly, seems to me that AP is implying that Sarah should be embarrassed by such a "middle class" income.

This proves she's one of us, and I am glad of that.

Oh, I've always heard that politicians actually avoid Friday releases for embarrassing news, specifically because they don't want it to be the main topic of all the Sunday news talk shows.

AP makes stuff up as it suits them, IMHO.

Gracias, retro

You can bet the MSM and the Obamatons are going over the Palins' returns with a fine toothed comb.

Search away....Waste time and money

That investigation will probably amount to as much as Troopergate.

If conservatives are RIGHT, then liberals must be WRONG.

integrity

The problem here is that most liberals would not know integrity if it bit them in the butt!

MOST of us don't cheat on our taxes or cheat on our spouses or steal or lie, but people who do those things truly believe that everyone else does it. And they surround themselves with others who do those things too, until it seems like "the norm".

They have no fripping idea how to handle this woman who doesn't do those things! They think that she must just be sneakier than they are at hiding it, so they are going after her like a dog looking for a bone. They will never understand that Gov. Palin does not have a closet full of skeletons, and the associated "favors" owed to people who know about the skeletons.

Luckily, those of us who try to live by those honest values recognize them, and appreciate them. Ms. Baracuda says "bring it on" and I don't think shese just posturing - she is the real deal.

SHE has my vote, and I giuess I get wishy-washy McCain in the package *grin*.

And they'll discover...

Or...

Hmmm... two incomes, and he made his money in oil!  Wasn't she overseeing oil stuff in Alaska?  Conflict!!!  He got rich, uh, um, wealthy, no, um, uh, paid, yeah, paid, by the very oil companies she oversaw!!!

Hmmm... gave a lot of money to radical churches, CHRISTIAN churches!  Foul, separation of church-and-state!

Hmmm... had 4 child deductions!  That's why she pretended to have her daughters baby! She wants more deductions to cheat the IRS!

That's it?!

Hell, that's one tenth of what B. Hussein gives to ACORN in a month.

ACORN

True, but ACORN's not a charity; BHO is getting something in return for his $800k.

That's not his own money

That's not his own money either.

Not his money?

That's not his own money either.

It's not?  I would think after his campaign received it from contributors, it's his.

That is the first thing I

That is the first thing I noticed about the return, the charity giving...

Big difference isn't there with some other dems we have seen...you know those we feel your pain, we work for the little people dudes/dudettes...

It won't be forgotten either...too close to election time, they had such a good chance to gain, the fools, including McCain...just my rant...sorry/

"America isn't the problem...America is the solution." ~ Rush Limbaugh

Since the MSM puts sooooo

Since the MSM puts sooooo much importance on this:

Palins: $300,000 over 2 years; $8,000 charity: 2.66%
Biden:  $2,450,042 over 10 years; $3,690 charity: 0.15%
National Average: 2.00%

Palin's charity contributions are 17 times greater than Biden. What will the MSM say? I don't know, but whatever they say, you know it's going to be an attack on Sarah Palin.

Charitably, This

The MSM story line will be the Palins are taking advantage of tax loopholes.

Irresponsible

They will say that the Palin's acted irresponsibly. That money should have been used to help their children. That money could have been used to prevent a birth defect (March of Dimes speak == Abortion).

If conservatives are RIGHT, then liberals must be WRONG.

charitable giving

i would also like to know how much they gave to their church/es.  i'll bet they would FAR outstrip biden on that also.  the only reason i say this is that one of the excuses that i heard obamites give for HIS low chartible donations ( until he decided to run for pres ) was that he gave to his church...and they thought that should be looked at as charitable giving also.

Ecclesiastes 10:2 The heart of the wise inclines to the right, but the heart of the fool to the left.

The Palins donated about 10

The Palins donated about 10 times the amount the Bidens gave to charity, as indicated on their tax forms.

Biden's tax returns were embarrassing..

Biden's tax returns were embarrassing.. No kidding.

But why didn't AP advise its readers of that possibility with the Bidens' returns less than a month ago?

On a Friday? No wonder, after all, it  that they were claiming only showed an average of $369 given to charity each year.

I seem to remember that there was a good amount of media want to show that Biden was one of the lower wage earners in the Senate. I'd imagine that in their view, that would put him much closer in touch with the people and thus, a favored candidate.

$369, Gary

No wonder, after all, it  that they were claiming only showed an average of $369 given to charity each year.

But he was doing "good works" in the Senate by redistributing other people's money.

I don't know how this candidate's releasing of their tax returns

...came about, but I do not agree with it.

I certainly wouldn't want mine floating around out there.

It is hard enough to attract truly qualified people to run for office as it is. The truly unfortunate events that unfolded in the House today demonstates this clearly.

Just because someone elects to run for public office does not, in my view, mean they should be required to forfeit their right to privacy.

Of course, if we were to pass the FairTax, their would be no tax returns to release.  :-)

Palin/Anybody other than McPork in '08

Amen!

And hallelujah! to the Fair Tax. In the meantime, I think that every member of the MSM should be required to make their tax returns, school transcripts and arrest records public. Throw in their military records (if any of them bothered to serve their country) (Did John Kerry, who served in Viet Nam, ever get around to signing that form to authorize release of his records?) This would go to bias as the attorneys on TV say.

That's like reading Marx to become an entrepreneur.

Focus on Palin

I think that Palin's tax returns are being subjected to a greater degree of scrutiny, given the fact that so little is known about her, she got an extension allowing to file her Federal Elections Commission disclosure  due before the debate until after the debate, and Biden's returns were filed long ago.  That and many writers anticipated that she would fail to report income for the per diem and state reimbursement for her family's travel expense.

Politicians and Media types

Politicians and Media types have absolutely no idea how much they are reviled, despised and hated by the average American. Things could get very ugly, very quickly. When millions of people become homeless due to government malfeasence and conspiracy, they will demand retribution. The elected officials will know actual fear of the populace. Their greed has driven us into this abrogation of the pact between govt and the people.

Hey yo, AP...

Don't tell me that this is a sign that there might be something embarrassing. Tell me what is supposedly embarrassing in the tax returns.

If anything, it looks like her tax returns are more a cause for embarrassment to Biden.

BTW, nice catch, Michael. Those are the kind of subtled but significant biases that can often be overlooked.

The home of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin on Lake Lucille in Wasilla, Alaska, is seen Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2008. Palin and her husband have pieced together a uniquely Alaskan income that reached comfortably into six figures even before she became governor, capitalizing on valuable fishing rights, a series of land deals and a patchwork of other ventures to build an above-average lifestyle.

So where is the picture of Biden's Home, and or Obama's home? We know both of them make a lot more than the Palins, and I also know they have also built an "above-average lifestyle".

"America isn't the problem...America is the solution." ~ Rush Limbaugh

Barack Obama is a Crook

It is past time for it to be stated that Barack Obama is a crook. His
campaign is crooked. He employs crooks. He associates with crooks.

It is past time to note that the entire press, pundits, fringe, right and
left is in financial bed with Mr. Obama's financiers funding the entire
group.
There is no Truth. Olbermann rants for Obama. Limbaugh
prattles on about things which no one cares about. O'Reilly has a luv
fest with Obama.
The FBI might as well stand for, For oBama
Incorporated, as they know very well of all his money embezzlement and
not one charge filed.

Barack Obama and Michelle Obama have a
long list of odd revenue happenings. He gets to attend Occidental,
Columbia and Harvard on student loans apparently like his wife.
Nowhere
is it listed that either of these two ever held a summer job, so their
job was taking student loan money and living well off the taxpayer for
7 years. Be assured, American taxpayers at Occidental your student loan
for Obama purchased quantities of drugs as part of his living expense
for which the Mexican border and Colombian jungles are littered with
dead people all so Obama could get high on your money.

That if
felony embezzlement of government funds for illegal activity, involving
people being murdered so Obama could get stoned.

In this period,
Barack somehow found enough money in not working to take a trip with
Muslim school mates to Indonesia, Pakistan and he ended up in Kenya.

One knows very well that was taxpayer money in fraudulent use of school loans to take a round the world vacation.
That is the second felony embezzlement of government funds for illegal activity, involving Islamic terrorist states.

He graduates Harvard, gets married and becomes employed as a writer. This
means one is supposed to pay off your student loans. That is not what
Obama did though. No, he and Michelle took another 3 months vacation to
Bali.
Islamic terrorists if one remembers were blowing things up in
Bali with delight and yet Obama goes to Bali, not Hawaii where he
supposedly called home.

Then Barack and Michelle with her as a
lawyer and consultant, him as a lawyer, teacher and legislator are
earning around $200,000 a year for a decade. Still the student loans
are not being repaid.

He did though have money for a $450,000
Chicago condo. Once again one is responsible to pay off student loans,
but Barack and Michelle Obama seemed to have found ways to not pay off
the loans using them instead as low interest subsidies on 6 figure rich
careers while poor people couldn't afford to send their kids to college.

That all changed though when Obama hit the Senate and he cashed in on book deals for $2.27 million dollars.
Obama at this time stated he paid off his student loan. One knows why he did
as it looks bad for millionaire stooges running for the White House
living on million dollar welfare.

Obama states his net worth is
around $700,000, the problem is the book deal and the fact he moved up
to a Tony Rezko mansion he bought for $1.6 million which was 300,000
dollars under market price of $1.95 million in a sweetheart deal
involving Rezko.
Did I mention Rezko is Syrian and he just so
happened to be bankrupt until he got several million dollars from
Saddam's banker, Iraqi Islamocommunist billionaire, Nadhmi Auchi, whom
Obama was entertaining.

Yes Saddam Hussein helped buy Barack Obama his Georgian Mansion in Chicago.

Rezko's wife, Rita, though assisted the Obama purchase by buying the next door
lot for $625,000 and later sold Obama a piece of it so Barry could have
a bigger yard.
In cutting the crap, Rezko got Obama his mansion from
Saddam Hussein's bribes to the west, because Obama was assisting Rezko
in plundering blacks on Chicago's South Side in being a slum lord.

Barry termed his deal with Rezko as dumb. No Barry it was a multiple count
felony, and, still silence from all in the closing weeks to the
election.

Obama's spokesman, Ben LaBolt, is on record
stating that Obama had $3 million later invested in the savings trust
which then gave the Obama's a loan.
Excuse me, FBI check please, as
if they paid off their student loan finally, Obama says he is only
worth seven hundred thousand, was paid over $2 million for the book
deal, where is this other $800,000 coming from?

In any event Obama received a $1.32 million loan from Northern Trust where he took
out a 30 year loan at 5.625 percent which was well under any loans
available to other citizens.
The loan was saving him $300 a month.
At this time, Obama had never did one cent of business with Northern
Trust and yet he gets a special rate loan.
These are the same scam
loans which Democrats Chris Dodd and Kent Conrad received, all like
Obama serving on the Senate finance committees running interference for
these crooked slum lord lenders who just cost the taxpayers a trillion
dollars.

It is all FBI ok though as Obama took over one hundred
thousand from Fannie Mae, Northern Trust gave him $71,000 and convicted
felon Tony Rezko public records show around $40,000 all in Obama
coffers.
This is not unethical only. This is felony illegal in quid pro quo.

The financiers deliberately imploded the derivatives market 2 weeks ago to assist Obama which it did.

Nancy Pelosi deliberately imploded the bail out which will line Warren
Buffetts' Chinese pockets and cost thousands of people their savings so
Obama could have one more week of financial mess to attack John McCain
and scare Americans.

All of these activities are felony crimes
and I don't see one George Will, Katie Couric or any of these countless
other employed right, left or fringe media all being paid out of the
same financial pool which is assisting Obama saying one word about
Obama being a crook.

Obama has brought in illegally over $250
million dollars from foreigners into his campaign to subvert the US
elections. The campaign via Pritzker, Hildebrand, Plouffe and Axelrod
are drying cleaning that money to election fraud groups like ACORN who
say they have registered 1 million new voters.
CSI of New Orleans is
being paid around a million dollars for stage events when it doesn't do
stage events for the Obama campaign and says it is passing the money to
ACORN.

Anyone who knows Tom Daschle and Steve Hildebrand of
South Dakota is well aware of their election fraud in showing up on the
Sioux reservations with cases of cash buying Indian votes for victory.
ACORN is funnelling money into a same election theft scheme.
All
felonies and yet not one word from Congressional Republicans, President
Bush, any pundits right, left or fringe on the national stage.

Barack Obama has lived a 3rd world dictator's life doping and vacationing off
the American taxpayer and now he is implementing a 3rd world theft of
the American election system.

and not one sound from any major
player, not one indictment from a US Attorney like Patrick Fitzgerald
who didn't seem to have problems indicting scooters and not one
investigation by the FBI into the biggest 29 year felony embezzlement
of taxpayer funds and the felony fraud on the US election system.

Where is the Truth in America and is there not one person besides a few
bloggers who are willing to call a crook a crook in Barack Hussein
Obama.

Palin is a tax cheat

Palin's failure to pay taxes on her $17,000 in per diem income is nothing less than tax evasion.  There are several reasons that she was patently not entitled to receive tax free per diem, but the easiest one to understand is that her tax home is Anchorage and not Juneau per Alaska's own financial department.

http://fin.admin.state.ak.us/dof/travel/resource/tax.pdf

"If the employee does not work at their PCN duty station at least 50% of the time (vacation time does not count toward time worked at the duty station), then the State must first considerwhether the employee works the majority of their time at another location, making this location their principle place of business. If they do, this other location becomes their tax home."

Palin spent 312 nights of her first 19 months as governor, including vactation time if any was taken.  Since Wasilla is within 50 miles of ghe state offices inAnchorage, Palin was not entitled to receive non-taxable per diem.

Maybe Palin can join her good friend Alaska Senator Ted Stevens in a federal prison.

The best the enemy can come up with against Governor Palin ?

(yawn)

It's good to see that this is the best the enemy can come up with against Governor Palin.

factfinder44, I hope you're not a tax accountant.

The employer, in this case, the State of Alaska, determines if the reimbursements are taxable or not. The PDF you linked to, shows how the State of Alaska determines if the reimbursements are taxable or not, per IRS guidelines.  If the State of Alaska determines that all, or a portion of the reimbursements are taxable, they have to include that portion in box 1, Wages, tips and other compensation on the employee's W-2 and withhold Federal, Fica and Medicare.

If the State of Alaska did not include the $17,000.00 on Gov. Palin's W-2, then I believe they determined the reimbursements to be non-taxable.

If you believe the $17,000.00 should be taxable, then talk to the State of Alaska, specifically the department that issues the W-2s and ask them what criteria they used. But, before you do, I suggest you read IRS publication 463, Revenue Ruling 2006-175 and finally the instructions for preparing forms W-2 and W-3.

Ask the State of Alaska why it treated its governor special

If it were not for the fact that the person making the ultimate boss of the person ingerpreting the rules on per diem payments, your argument would be a lot stronger.

It is like the CEO of a corportation with a home office in New York claiming per diem for working out of the comapany's local corporate Palm Spring's office, which just happens to be near the CEO's  home.  Who is going to turn down the CEO's claim?

ingerpreting the rules

ingerpreting the rules

What is "ingerpreting"  ?  Is that like the Unix command "grep" or something ?

Typo

The best you can do for a reply is to flag an obvious typo when anyone but a dolt would know I meant "interpreting"!

What is hilarious is that while Palin obvioulsly failed to pay income on both the per diem and the family travel reimbursement, and Richard Nixon was found liable for taxes he failed to pay on similar family travel reimbursement, all the Palinbots can do is whine about how it is so unfair that the MSM gigged Palin for releasing her returns late on a Friday and talk about how Palin contributed a greater percentage of her income to charity.  Why is it that no one is impressed that Palin gave charity a fraction of the money that she cheated the United States Treasury out of?

Why is it that no one is

Why is it that no one is impressed that Palin gave charity a fraction
of the money that she cheated the United States Treasury out of?

Since those returns - just like her expenses - are a matter of public record, the IRS should have no trouble going after her if they thought there was a problem.

Really - is this the best you've got?  You should stick with "She has only been Governor for less that two years".  At least that is factual.

Factfinder44, I disagree

Who is going to turn down the CEO's claim?

If the facts and circumstances dictated, I would, as I expect most people would.  If you don't know about "Trust Fund Taxes" and the implications for not reporting them accurately, I suggest you read up on the subject, especially the section on penalties and who can be held liable for them.

Your argument about the "CEO" would be much stronger if you could produce someone from the Alaska Dept. of Treasury that states they were "forced" to omit the reimbursements from total compensation on the W-2 when they believed it should have been added to total compensation. Highly unlikely, in my opinion.

I'm inclined to believe that the people employed at the Alaska Dept. of Treasury are going to try to interpret the IRS regulations in good faith and to the best of their ability and apply them to everybody, equally.

It looks to me like your ideological slant doesn't allow you to consider the notion that most people can, and for the most part, do try to do the right thing.

Trust Fund Taxes

Your comment on Trust Fund Taxes is about as rational as Palin was in her interviews with Katie Couric.  Trust Funds haven't a thing to do with the issue of the taxability of per diem payments.

Forget ideology.  The payments would be taxable if the recipient was sainted or if it was Spiro Agnew.  The woman didn't pay taxes on taxable income.  The only question is if she evaded paying taxes or made an innocent mistake.

As for your silly argument that the Alska employess would try to interpret IRS regulations in good faith, how many times have government employees got it wrong when acting in good faith and to the best of their ability.

By the way, you should read up on how Palin went balistic when legislators put in for per diem for attending a special one day session of the legislature in Anchorage - and those were legitimate  per diem requests.

As for her failure to pay taxes on money received for family travel expenses, I understand that Richard Nixon was found owing taxes for his family's travel.

Tax Nazi.

Factfinder44, once again I must disagree.

Your comment on Trust Fund Taxes is about as rational as Palin was in her interviews with Katie Couric.

Trust Fund taxes would be required to be withheld from any taxable reimbursement and the person responsible for withholding the taxes would be liable for a substantial penalty for not withholding them.

Employment Taxes and the Trust Fund Recovery Penalty (TFRP)

Congress passed a law that provides for the TFRP. These taxes are called trust fund taxes because you actually hold the employee's money in trust until you make a federal tax deposit in that amount. The TFRP may apply to you if these unpaid trust fund taxes cannot be immediately collected from the business. The business does not have to have stopped operating in order for the TFRP to be assessed.

Who Can Be Responsible for the TFRP

The TFRP may be assessed against any person who:

- is responsible for collecting or paying withheld income and employment taxes, or for paying collected excise taxes, and
-willfully fails to collect or pay them.

[...]

For willfulness to exist, the responsible person:

-must have been, or should have been, aware of the outstanding taxes and
-either intentionally disregarded the law or was plainly indifferent to its requirements (no evil intent or bad motive is required).

[...]

The amount of the penalty is equal to the unpaid balance of the trust fund tax. The penalty is computed based on:

- The unpaid income taxes withheld, plus
- The employee's portion of the withheld FICA taxes.

So, you're saying that my "Trust Fund Taxes" statement is not rational because why? My question is, why would the persons at the Alaska Dept. of Treasury, responsible for withholding Trust Fund Taxes on a reimbursement, subject themselves, personally, to a penalty for not properly withholding and paying them to the IRS. My guess is they determined the reimbursement was non-taxable.

As for your silly argument that the Alska employess would try to interpret IRS regulations in good faith, how many times have government employees got it wrong when acting in good faith and to the best of their ability.

You provided my "silly argument", when you posted the PDF link in your first post:

We have discussed this issue with the IRS and the following summarizes the IRS comments on the one-year rule and taxable per diem.

Now why would the State of Alaska be discussing this issue with the IRS if they had no intention of following the rules. Maybe they were acting in good faith?

By the way, you should read up on how Palin went balistic when legislators put in for per diem for attending a special one day session of the legislature in Anchorage - and those were legitimate per diem requests.

Spiro T. Agnew

The payments would be taxable if the recipient was sainted or if it was Spiro Agnew.

What evidence do you have supporting your suggestion that Mr. Agnew isn't a saint?
