There's a heartwarming story in today's Times of Northwest Indiana. Jane Pauley, one-time co-host of NBC's Today and Dateline NBC programs, made an appearance yesterday for Barack Obama. Joining her was Steve Skvara, the retired steelworker who in August of last year tearfully asked Democratic presidential candidates at a debate, "What's wrong with America? And what will you do to change it?" The Times reported:
PORTAGE Former television news anchor and Hoosier native Jane Pauley returned to her professional roots Monday during a local appearance on behalf of Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama.
Pauley, who said she worked for the state Democratic Party before launching her successful news career, took part in a panel discussion aimed at touting the benefits of Obama's economic plans for Hoosiers over that of his Republican challenger John McCain.
Story Continues Below Ad ↓While the subject matter was complex at times, Pauley occasionally took the opportunity to inject partisan humor into the discussion.
"Why would you want a maverick when you've had a cowboy in the White House for two terms already?" she asked, referring to McCain's description of himself.
Alas, Jane's witty comment didn't enjoy as much currency as it deserved. That's because only eight people showed up for the rally. Late notice was cited for the pathetic turnout.
The small gathering didn't discourage Skvara, a favorite with the Communist People's Weekly World. He gave the obligatory McCain "scares me to death" statement and continued:
He said McCain opposes federal rules and regulations and yet that has repeatedly led to catastrophes, whether it was the savings and loan crisis during the 1990s or the current mortgage crisis.
Playing off President Bush's claims of wanting to put more control into people's hands as part of an "ownership society," Skvara said the country is headed in the opposite direction.
"It's going to be the homeless society," he said.
Last year Steve tugged on liberal heartstrings with his plaintive, "What's wrong with America?" That only eight people showed up to see the Pauley-Skvara duo supporting Obama is evidence of what's right with America.
See also this local tv report of the campaign stop, which does not mention how few people showed up.

Beautiful. Poetic, even.
September 23, 2008 - 16:01 ET by The DistributistA close family member was once a guest on Pauley's show when she was on Today. By his account she was the nastiest, least friendly and most self-important woman he ever had the pleasure of meeting.

September 23, 2008 - 19:22 ET by Indiana JoeDidn't make much of a point, either.
<edit> On second thought, I'll reply further: It may be a "sweeping generalization," but maybe not "stupid." With the surety I constantly find in liberals, the sense that they are right, dammit, and you must be evil or stupid not to see it, it's not a stretch to say that female liberals are similar to males in that regard. There's a definite superiority complex operating on the left, a need to listen to our "betters." Of course, those who believe that generally feel that they are members of that elite.
Stuck up and snobbish? No, not much of a stretch at all.

Sweeping generalization?
September 23, 2008 - 22:24 ET by JPR1Not necessarily; if one is reasonably well aquainted with both liberal gals and conservative gals the distinction is not hard to make.
No shortage of liberal women revealing their true nature on a daily basis within the MSM. Conservative women? Well, one has to get to know some before one can really tell the difference.

I saw that Greta Van Susteren is being pilloried in liberal Canadian circles because she called that nasty, anti-Palin Canadian columnist, Heather Mallick, "a pig". Last night, in response, she again called Ms. Mallick "a pig". Van Susteren may be more liberal than others on FoxNews, but she does know her pigs.

September 23, 2008 - 17:44 ET by bigtimerFor someone from the left I have always respected/liked Greta...even though we disagree.
I watched her half hour show on CNN when she got it, you could tell she wasn't happy, she later explained all that years later on Fox...it is just what you would expect...she was told to do what they wanted her to...whether she agreed or not.

September 23, 2008 - 18:09 ET by iveseenitallJust had a discussion with a former liberal. He's finally seen the light. Now I can't shut him up. On and on he goes about how bad the "liberals" are. I have to laugh as he mentions Pelosi, Reid, Obama, Kennedy, Biden, et. al. After years of trying to defend them, he's had an epiphany! I think Greta has had the same, but can't say it right now. Maybe there is hope, after all.

September 23, 2008 - 18:36 ET by Indiana JoeGeez, this was right next door to me, and I didn't hear a word about it!
Of course, I haven't bothered reading the local newsrags in quite awhile. And our local TV is run out of Chicago. Time was when Pauley would have made some ripples just being near Chicago.
I lost any respect for her (little as it was) when she appeared on Letterman, and they used a synthesizer to make her and Dave's voices sound like they were breathing helium. And that self-important snob wouldn't say one word.
Sounds like she got as much attention as I always felt she deserved.

blur and then, finally, lose all separation?
When the last of the feeble attempts at being apolitical and totally unbiased occurred is pretty clear. It occurred with the nomination of Sarah Palin for RNC VP. It caught the 95% liberal media so off guard that their "reporting", at least for the first few weeks, has been raw and up front across the board unbridled biased partisanship.
Printing rumors on page one ignoring the age old journalism rule of "two independent reliable sources" and even making up hypothetical stories you'd normally not find in daily city newspapers or, at least, buried in the op-ed section and clearly marked as such. Journalism that has been the standard in other countries for many years. Especially countries with one party "strong man" rule and only one newspaper that is more government issued propaganda than it is actual truthful news. We dropped to one paper per major city for competitive (not political) reasons and the same three major TV networks (Fox is great but vieweship stacked up against ABC/NBC/CBS is no contest. Plus viewership of Fox is mostly "preaching to the choir".
The media is quickly backtracking trying to cover up their many "my slip was showing" totally biased stories that should have been in the op-ed section but, instead, appeared on page one as actual verifiable 100% truthful news. But a surprisingly high number are not pulling back an inch! They are amazed at how easy it was to move "op-ed" to the front page. And the same with network news although that had pretty much been completed years ago.
The dream of "changing the world" that virtually all journalism students had and still have as their life's goal but, until now, mostly had to hide behind carefully worded code words or write their true feelings in the op-ed section that not one in 20 readers ever reaches has been realized with ONE news event.
They are now free to write whatever they want wherever they want and their editors are cheering them on! I predict the newspapers who have tried to cover their tracks of their emotional few days of unbridled page one bias will decide "its working for them so it can work for us too, how easily the American people believe whatever they read on page one as real, unbiased and the absolute truth. We've returned to the all biasd and all scandal sheet newspapers of the 18th century!
To answer the first question, it will always be debated but I'd say carefully worded bias began to slip into page one in the election of 1960 but what's really important is what has happened since Sarah Palin became the RNC VP nominee. Don't get me wrong. I think she is a great choice and she has my vote. But there is no longer a "page one" of most big city newspapers. Just op-ed from cover to cover. They'll skip sports and classified for now but are the American people this easily fooled? Sadly, yes.
