On PBS's Web site today, ombudsman Michael Getler writes of complaints over an incident during last Sunday's pledge drive. He describes the cheap shot taken by actor Mike Farrell against vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin:
According to Joseph Campbell, vice president of fundraising programs, here's what happened:
"During the broadcast of 'The 60s Live!: My Generation, My Music,' a special featuring Eric Burdon (of the Animals), the Mamas and the Papas, Roger McGuinn (of the Byrds) and others, celebrity host Mike Farrell made an unscripted remark regarding the presidency of the United States. Mr. Farrell's spontaneous comment was entirely unplanned and does not represent the views of PBS, its employees or its member stations."
Campbell explained that, aside from performance clips by many stars of the 60s and pledge breaks featuring station-produced testimonials, a number of celebrities appeared live, including Farrell. "He made the comment live and gave us no indication of his intentions. Immediately after he went off the air he was confronted about his comments and promised that he would stay 'on script' for the remainder of the telecast, and did."
The exact exchange is as follows:
While Farrell is introducing Michelle Phillips of the Mamas and Papas, Phillips says: "People may even know us as boyfriend and girlfriend from (the TV show) 'Providence.'" Then Farrell says: "'Providence' that's right. Now I've been thinking about the fact that with all your qualities and the fact that you don't know anything about economics or foreign policy that you could be in line for the Presidency!"
Getler rightly notes that making political statements while asking viewers for contributions "is just plain stupid, and contradictory to the purpose and credibility of PBS." He includes a sampling of letters received, all of which are critical.
Actor Mike Farrell's extremely liberal views and eagerness to voice them are well known and his comment should not have been totally unexpected. Still, at least PBS is recognizing that - at least during fundraisers - it's prudent to dial down the bias.

Dear Mikey,
I really don't care what you have to say. Just because you were on a TV show doesn't mean you know anything. Your career was based on "playing pretend," just like 5 year olds do. You lived in a rarified* environment where people constantly stroked your ego until they realized you couldn't deliver any ratings anymore. Now you are a nobody. You never really produced anything useful to society. And you still don't. I know you like to think you are for the workingman and that you can relate to regular people. Guess what? You can't. Keep on blabbering, though, because we really want to see how innane people like you are. That's right, Mikey, I'm telling you to exercise your freedom of speech. Say it louder and prouder. Make an appearance at the next Sandra Bernhardt concert. Book a slot on The View with Joy Behar. Have a sit-down cry with Oprah. You might think that this shows how much you care about others or how intellectually superior you are, but remember that you are just somebody who made a name for himself by dressing up and playing make-believe.
Sincerely,
Dr. Liberty

Did Michelle Phillips slap Mike Farrell?
September 19, 2008 - 23:02 ET by Lame CherryI realize this is about smearing Gov. Palin, but Mike Farrell said on public television that Michelle Phillips is an idiot in not knowing anything.
For the record, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, US Grant, Teddy Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt, John Kennedy and Bill Clinton had no economic experience or foreign policy experience.
Most of the United State's presidents had no domestic or foreign policy exposure. People like Jefferson who did have some were actually disasters as President. Jefferson thought that gun boats were the answer to national defense.
His policy with his student Madison gave America the War of 1812.
If it had not been for the Federalists of Washington and Hamilton building the few ships America had for that war, America would have boats you rowed, capsized when firing cannon or swamped if the wind blew.
By 1815, America still had horrid flotillas except for our magnificient frigates in the Constitution a 44 gun ship which British frigates fled before, but by then America had begun building the big 74's like the Franklin to contend on the world's oceans.
Except for a few commanders like Scott in the Army and the fabulous MacDonough and Perrry on the Great Lakes, America had major problems with "experienced Jefferson policy".
The greatest leader America produced between the Revolution and the Civil War was a volatile, self educated, backwoodsman named Andrew Jackson.
This man was not known out of his Creek warfare days in the southern territories. He though met at New Orleans with an assembled group of regulars, privateers, volunteer French and Kentuckians (numbers of whom did not even have guns.) thee cream of Nelson's British Army.
These were the warriors of an empire who had slaughtered every military of note in Europe for 25 years. They looted, murdered and raped their way across the world literally as historical examples show.
The Americans were as untamed as the wind, but these backwoodsmen feared and loved Jackson and he immediately struck this British Army as it camped in hand to hand combat with American frontier knife against British bayonette.
Jackson so rattled the British they delayed the advance to which Jackson moulded his lines in 3 weeks later when this experienced Army attacked the Americans, the Americans slaughtered them and slaughtered their finest Generals who had destroyed Napoleon.
The above is related as an example that God has been very good to America in providing us with His chosen people and not bothering with military credentials, serving as ambassador to Paris or being an accountant.
God looks on the heart. Sarah Palin has that feature in her heart that God moved John McCain to choose her out of all the people for the reason of what she can bring.
Normal people can see this quality and is why America is interested in her as she is genuine.
The coward Mr. Farrell needs to ask the question when the chips are down if he would trust his life in a charge against a Chinese army if it was John McCain or Barack Obama giving the order?
If it were Barack Obama or Sarah Palin?
I know John McCain would know what to do. I know Gov. Palin would know what to do.
I even know I would trust Michelle Phillips to at least tell me she didn't know what the heck to do, but I know Barack Obama would be hiding in his bunker telling people do die on his thought process.
How do I know this? Barack Obama wanted to talk to Ahmadinejad of Iran. Ahmadinejad has challenged him to a debate now and Obama has fled.
John McCain told Ahmadinejad to stuff it and said it reveals how inept Obama is for getting into a debate mess.
http://www.canada.co...
Oh and for the people interested, the Persian Islamocommunists are now weighing about a first strike against the United States, Arabs and the Israeli state as Obamas financial rapists have so screwed up the economy in this latest attempt to install Obama as king.
I detail the logistics in my blog for those interested.

Have you noticed how often
September 19, 2008 - 23:16 ET by Rush FanHave you noticed how often liberals, when defending their positions, will name so-called “conservatives” or RINOs as examples of others who also agree with their positions? These “conservatives” or RINOs , are people like Sen. Chuck Hagel or Sen. Arlen Specter or former Rhode Island Republican Sen. Lincoln Chafee or Republican strategist Mike Murphy, or The New York Times David Brooks. These individuals, as well as other fakes, are frequently used by the liberal media whenever they want a Republican or conservative point of view.
In the link to the PBS website I noticed that John Siceloff, executive producer of the PBS program NOW, responds to the criticism raised about a poll on the PBS’ website which asks the question, ‘Do you think Sarah Palin is qualified to serve as Vice President of the United States?’ Not surprisingly, this is part of Siceloff’s response: “Even a number of conservatives raised the issue of Palin’s qualifications, for example the New York Times’ David Brooks.”
For those not familiar with “conservative” David Brooks, he is about as conservative as MSNBC’s Chris Matthews. That is why he is permitted to write for The New York Times. This is what he writes about Gov. Palin and President Bush: “She has not been engaged in national issues, does not have a repertoire of historic patterns and, like President Bush, she seems to compensate for her lack of experience with brashness and excessive decisiveness.”
As for activist Mike Farrell, he is a perfect example of how dangerous and nutty are those on the far left. Earlier this year Farrell gave an anti-Iraq war speech at an anti-war demonstration. Here is the video link to that speech and the following are excerpts from that speech:
"We have to take our country back from the liars and the thieves and the criminals that are running Washington today."
"My suggestion is the following, George Bush, Dick Cheney... and all of the theives and liars they consort with should be stripped naked and walked through the streets of every town and hamlet in this country and when we finish walking through every town naked in this country they ought to be forced to walk through Afghanistan and Iraq"

Now I've been thinking
September 20, 2008 - 06:44 ET by Jack BauerSeems a bit harsh on Obama, but... kudos Farrell for speaking troll to power.
Mike Farrell is a moral and intellectual retard.
September 20, 2008 - 07:22 ET by JohnMcGrewAnd I say that with all sincerity.
A prime example: A dozen years or so ago, Mr. Farrell was the high profile guest of honor at the protest of an execution of a torturer/murderer/rapist in California. The executee had recently ceased filing appeals of his sentence, and had finally accepted the inevitable. This particular criminal had been convicted of kidnapping and then repeatedly torturing and raping a young girl over a period of days, before finally killing her in a most brutal and inhumane nature. The girl was made to endure penetration by various means not limited to the rapist himself, and was finally made to drink acid before finally succumbing to death, which must have seemed like a relief to the poor victim.
I relate such gruesome detail only to put Mr. Farrell’s comment regarding the criminal’s cessation of appeals into context:
The experience of living on death row had stolen all “humanity” from the murderer.
Excuse me Mr. Farrell, but I think that this individual was bereft of “humanity” long before the legal system got its hands on him.
If highlighting the plight of human debris such as this is the best you can do to make your case against capital punishment, then it’s really difficult to understand what the problem is. On the contrary, every time you now open your mouth and expose your intellectual and moral retardation, you reinforce whatever opinion you are voicing against.
So please. Keep it up.
An aside: Every time I consider giving to PBS again, something like this happens to slap the sense back into me. The PBS execs who brought Farrell in know what he’s about. They will deny it, but the mere fact that an otherwise washed-up celebrity is there is a statement that he shares their opinions. End Corporate Welfare. Start with PBS.
