In both the printed and Web editions of today's Chicago Tribune appears the short piece, "Rangel had interest-free mortgage:"
Rep. Charles Rangel paid no mortgage interest on a beach resort property for more than 10 years, a lawyer for the powerful House committee chairman said Friday. The New York congressman's lawyer, Lanny Davis, told The Associated Press that Rangel got his no-interest deal for the villa in the Dominican Republic because he was an original buyer in the resort development, and in the early days after the purchase the rental income failed to meet expectations.
Not mentioned is that the powerful Ways and Means Committee, which Rangels chairs, writes tax laws. You know, laws like paying taxes on rental income. Additionally, Rangel's political party is not identified, no doubt merely an inadvertent lapse in reportage.
Guess we're really going to have to put on our thinking caps to figure out to which party Charlie belongs. Think, think, think. What, you already know?

I give up I don't recognize the Democrat Party anymore.....
September 6, 2008 - 13:11 ET by lareeMaybe this is why, their leadership doesn't refelct the majority of American's values. Look at the make up of this movement right now, we are witnessing an inner battle going on inside, the movement, The feminist faction vs The rest of the Progressives.
Contemporary progressivism
The fourth and current Progressive movement grew out of social activism movements,
Naderite and populist left political movements in conjunction with the
civil rights, GLBT (Gay rights), women's or feminist, and environmental
movements of the 1960s-1980s.[6] This exists as a cluster of political, activist, and media organizations ranging in outlook from centrism (eg. Reform Party of the United States of America) to left-liberalism to social democracy (like the Green Party) and sometimes even democratic socialism (like the Socialist Party USA).
unreported income
September 6, 2008 - 13:12 ET by jiminjerseyDon't forget Rangel also failed to report $75K in income on the same property. At least that is what he admits to not reporting. Sounds like a felony to me but since he is a congressman I am sure he just has to file some sort of amended "report". I am sure the IRS would treat me the same way.

I didn't, which is why I referenced tax laws written by Way and Means.
I'm sure that, with expenses for maintenance deducted, Charlie will probably get a refund for his amended return.

September 6, 2008 - 14:15 ET by GregEAnd stupid excuses, like this gem several months ago, for his taxpayer paid-for, leased Cadillac that costs so much....
...........Representative Charles Rangel is proud of his leased-through-Congress
2004 Cadillac DeVille. And he even offers rides to constituents, so
they can discuss issues. Rangel told the NY Times, "I want them to feel that they are somebody and their congressman is somebody. And when they say, ‘This is nice,’ it feels good.”
And taxpayers should feel a little ownership over the car (which is
apparently so roomy Rangel has a desk in it)--taxpayers are footing the
$777.54/month lease (not to mention gas)

Also, isn't the same kind of stuff (foreign investment) that BHO has demonized on the campaign trail? You know, "I'll close all of the offshore tax loopholes!" Come on Barry, step up and take Rangel down to prove you are really a bipartisan reformer who stands for change.

Too regular to ignore
September 6, 2008 - 14:29 ET by SouthernRootsIn the google, yahoo, and nexus world, it is important that any reported misdeeds by Democrat or liberal politicians must never have the party included in the story.
In this way, any searches of misdeeds that include (D), Dem, Democrat, Lib, or Liberal will not return the stories.
With Republicans always labelled, the search engines will always produce more hits of rogue Republicans.
It's a way to game the system and it stinks.
The "press" gets special protection because, supposedly, without them our government will run roughshod over us. However, when the press turns blatantly in support of one particular party, agenda, and worldview, the "government watchdog" is converted into the "political lapdog".
The press has gotten so lazy these days that they will print unsubstantiated stories in order to "get the scoop". Or, they will sit on stories if it harms their "party".
This isn't journalism, it's B.S.
Print the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. Let the people decide.
I won't be wronged. I won't be insulted. I won't be laid a-hand on. I don't do these things to other people, and I require the same from them. - J.B. Books (John Wayne)
