"Palin claim on eBay plane sale doesn't fly" claims a story appearing on page 3 of the printed edition of today's newspaper and on on its Web site. The article begins:
JUNEAU, Alaska — When Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin sought to illustrate her frugality and flair to delegates at the GOP convention Wednesday, she described how she disposed of a corporate jet acquired by her unpopular predecessor."That luxury jet was over the top," Palin, the Republican vice presidential nominee, said to loud cheers. "I put it on eBay."
Palin's statement implied the plane was sold through the online auction site revered for empowering millions of small entrepreneurs, and Palin's spokeswoman insisted Thursday that the transaction occurred. But the plane failed to sell on eBay.
Instead, the 23-year-old 10-seat Westwind II was sold in August 2007 for $2.1 million to a Valdez, Alaska, entrepreneur; that's about $300,000 less than a broker's asking price, according to news accounts.
So what part of Palin's claim doesn't fly? She didn't assert the plane sold on eBay, merely that "I put it on eBay." Seems like the Tribune, in its eagerness to expose the "real Sarah," came to an incorrect conclusion and not one supported by the governor's original contention.
While the Tribune inferred wrongly, I'm certain it won't be deterred. It and other components of the mainstream media don't appear willing, even after being caught, to give up their slanted coverage of the Republican vice presidential candidate.

September 5, 2008 - 13:17 ET by Mr. BishopIn truth, I felt that while she was joking about eBay itself, I also can believe that she sold it. Putting something on eBay anymore, has become synonymous with simply selling it, or auctioning it. While many of us take it literally when someone says they put something on eBay, it is believable when someone says that, when meaning they sold it. In today's day and age of the internet, people understand what it means to "put it on eBay", so it tends to make people understand that you simply sold it.

Palin does not fit their template
September 5, 2008 - 12:14 ET by CapitalismRulesThe reason the media pit bulls have been unleashed on this poor woman should be fairly simple: she does not fit the template. This should surprise no one. George Allen...macaca, Mitt Romney...morman, Palin...mother. Each time a good-looking, influential, well-spoken Republican comes to the fore, they immediately find something to harp on......immediately. Obama is their guy- young, articulate, black, the little guy, the guy they can champion to the white house.
We got McCain and the MSMs smiled gleefully- old McCain, with his Washington Insder, old codger mentailty vs. new, fresh, young and black Obama, it was a slam dunk. Then McCain chose Palin, a woman who in a lot of ways on the outside mirrors Obama, so they tried to macaca-ize her, to morman-ize her, but it came on too fast and too late, she's in and she's ready and they are fuming that this totally breaks their storyline.
OY!
September 5, 2008 - 12:15 ET by MassConserv“That luxury jet was over the top – I put it on eBay." – Sarah Palin.
The version of Palin’s speech the MSM needed to hear so they couldn’t misconstrue it:
“That luxury jet was over the top – I put it on eBay. Except it didn’t sell on eBay so I had to hire an airplane broker who then placed the jet on some airplane sales industry listings. The jet sat there in limbo for a long time with no buyers so the broker lowered the price and re-listed it. Again, no one was interested in buying the jet so the broker ended up selling the jet for $300,000 less than its actual value. But I got rid of it"
MSM reaction to this version: “Palin gave an overly long and boring speech tonight. Proof that’s she’s not qualified to be Vice President.”
Did I miss anything?

September 5, 2008 - 12:22 ET by Hero SquadDang. If only she would've waited until this week, christened it "The Barracuda" with a logo on the nose, and then autographed the plane (with a Certificate of Authenticity), it probably would've sold for double its value on eBay.

A broker is going to price
September 5, 2008 - 13:17 ET by SumricaA broker is going to price out an aircraft with, probably, Aircraft Bluebook, use the retail ask price and negotiate anything less. Aircraft sell all the time at less than retail.
Pricing out an aircraft is a pretty exacting thing...engine times, airframe times, how it's equipped (all the avionics working properly?), any damage history, general condition (paint, glass, interior). Also, where it's been based (salty environment?), how and where it has been maintained all come into play with regard to that final selling price.
Compairing apples to apples is not real easy because they all spec out so differently and have different history. So, just saying one sold for $300 grand more or less than another isn't a valid thing....to me.
Buying and selling planes is a tuff market to know. Better do your homework or you'll have your financial hat handed to you...first time out.
Yep. It's not like this
September 5, 2008 - 22:37 ET by stratmanYep.
It's not like this was a Saturn car dealership where the asking price IS the price (or so I've been told).
Percentage-wise, how many things sell for the exact asking price? (rhetorical question)

September 5, 2008 - 15:59 ET by needleThe one that gets me is Obama constantly claiming that he [ever-so-wisely] did not support going to war against Iraq when everybody else did – except that he was not an elected national official at the time. I sell antiques -- both off
September 5, 2008 - 23:17 ET by CooltomI sell antiques -- both off and on eBay. The eBay successful sales rate for all their sellers auctions is 40% -- 60% get no bids.
Off eBay, all my items have price stickers. You always price the item at the top value because when you're haggling you can go down but you can't go up.
(Except when someone gives me an insulting offer. If they offer 50% then I peer at the sticker and double whatever's on there. They recoil in shock and stammer, "but the sticker says $XX!" I reply, "oh, you CAN read.")
I usually put in a little wiggle room. I try to get 100% of the sticker but will settle 80-90% (or 60% if it's a real dog I want to see out of my booth.)
The Media Strains at Gnats with Palin & Swallows Obama Camels
September 6, 2008 - 12:33 ET by daveinbocaWatching the MSM tilt ever farther into delirious editorializing on its front pages, give press passes to Code Pink screechers at the RNC, and generally comport themselves as agitprop morons, it's a wonder that the American people constantly make the correct choice on presidential issues.
The Tribune isn't a newspaper anymore. They dropped all investigations on Rezko worthy of the name because Obama is implicated in getting slush.
To quibble about a plane & eBay demonstrates the double-digit moral IQ of the average pressie.
No wonder dead tree media are extincting faster than the dinosaurs they resemble.
