Last night's CBS 2 Chicago's newscast led off with a segment on Barack Obama's visit to Kuwait. The station's Web site includes a written report headlined "Soldiers Overjoyed To Meet Obama In Kuwait." The accompanying video is titled "Troops In Kuwait Thrilled By Obama Visit." Obama was "applauded thunderously" by "excited soldiers," according to reporter Susan Carlson. How the media determined the troops were both overjoyed and thrilled isn't detailed. President Bush and others have been greeted by our troops with similar enthusiasm, but I doubt that overjoyed or thrilled were used in describing it.
This typifies the caliber of detached, objective reporting we've come to expect when Mr. Wonderful is the subject at hand. The mainstream media will be tossing bouquets - and probably their undies - in the direction of Obama.
Carlson did mention on her video report that Obama's campaign hopes his overseas trip will "overcome criticism that he lacks experience in world affairs." He needs major help in that area. As noted on CNN.com earlier this year:
At a campaign stop in November, Obama told an Iowa audience that "probably the strongest experience I have in foreign relations is the fact that I spent four years living overseas when I was a child in Southeast Asia."
Can you imagine? Four whole years as a grammar school student provide him, by his own admission, with his strongest experience in foreign relations. I'm certain his supporters are overjoyed and thrilled by it all. As well as the mainstream media, of course.
It's going to be a very long week.

July 20, 2008 - 01:45 ET by Warner Todd HustonMike, I saw that silly "report," too.
What struck me is that the headline had that the troops were "overjoyed" leaving the feeling that lots of troops were happy about Obama, but the report said "a group" of troops were on hand to see Obama. The term "a group" makes the gathering seem small. So, if it was a small group, how does "troops overjoyed" fit the reality? Seems to me more like that small group was happy to see him but the headline almost reads as if ALL the "troops" were "overjoyed."

A Group Of Overjoyed Troop Gathering
July 20, 2008 - 05:09 ET by DoktorFrankenWTH - Let's review. 98% of blacks that voted in the Democrat's primaries voted for The Itinerant Junior Idjit from Illinois. The military crowd that met Obama were comprised of almost 75% blacks, which is not the average percentage of blacks in the military, BTW.
March 2006 (CBS/AP) Defense Department statistics show that the number of black active-duty enlisted personnel has declined 14 percent since 2000.
The decrease is particularly acute for the services doing most of the
fighting in Iraq: The number of black enlisted soldiers has dropped by
19 percent and the number of black enlisted Marines has fallen by 26
percent in the same period.
So, just how balanced was the crowd in Kuwait? Was the scale tipped a bit? I've seen no one reporting this conundrum regarding the adoring throng that rushed to greet the Presumptuous One. I would be 'overjoyed' if it were so.
And let's consider this:
July 20, 2008 - 06:26 ET by motherbeltAnd let's consider this: Isn't having mostly black troops on hand to greet the Obama a bit, shall we say, racist?
Let's give the black soldiers a chance to meet "their" guy?
When President Bush went to Baghdad for Thanksgiving, the troops stood and clapped hooted and hollered and shouted and roared...and I don't recall anyone describing them as "overjoyed' when on that occasion they actually were.

Not Racist - Just Kinda Expected
July 20, 2008 - 08:35 ET by DoktorFrankenMB,
I'll be open minded enough to admit that there were probably enough (20 or so?) extremely fervent Obama backers in Kuwait that actually wanted to greet their Messiah. Not unlike the vast majority of the military that would hoot and holler for W.
Just MHO.
Not just Black, but female
July 20, 2008 - 08:38 ET by WingletDriverIf you watch the video again, the crowd is also predominantly female despite that particular demographic making up less than 20% of the Air Force (Kuwait is an AF operation). Overall, Blacks make up less than 15% of the Air Force. Source: http://www.afpc.randolph.af.mil/library/airforcepersonnelstatistics.asp
Kate O'Beirne wrote a great book called "Women Who Make the World Worse" in which she demonstrates how libs have turned the DoD into the worlds largest daycare center for unmarried mothers (an obvious Democrat stronghold). What in this video would make you not believe that this is the constituency BHO was talking to? (Before you get on your high horse and claim racism/sexism, please read O'Beirn's book and realize that demographics, like nature, is a bitch).
The video also said that Kuwait was the largest base in the Middle East (I think it's actually Al Uedid in Qatar), which makes me wonder why anybody would claim that a small pep rally qualifies as an unmitigated hit.
I too saw footage of this
July 20, 2008 - 11:11 ET by Captain RepusI too saw footage of this major event on the news last night. The footage I saw looked more like a cross section of NAACP and the black division of NOW in composition, both of which voted for Obammy at a rate of 92%+. I suspect they asked the other 8%, most of which were probably wearing turbans, to step outside during the filming.
To think this is just the FIRST event of his 1 week crusade I can't imagin what we are going to see later. Maybe they can get some shots of him riding in a tank.

July 20, 2008 - 08:28 ET by amberI saw some photos of those troops and I would not call them "overjoyed" annoyed and disgusted was more the reality.

One of the skill sets required for those in the MSM is the ability to read minds. If they say the troops are overjoyed it must be so.

So, let's see if I have
July 20, 2008 - 02:01 ET by jdhawkSo, let's see if I have this right. A junion first-term senator, that by the way, may not actually be able to find his own senate seat he has been there so little during this term, when upon a couple of day visit to a war zone - the same war zone that if he was in charge we would have already turned tail on - and suddenly he is qualified to be commander in chief? I guess if I was the drive by media and had a suspension of disbelief, that would be true, but I am not.
This is the guy who said that he was going to get the Joint Chiefs of Staff together after he was sworn in as president and order them to begin withdrawal of our forces in Iraq. The only problem is that the Joint Chiefs of Staff are not in the chain of command. That would be the Secretary of Defense and the Commding General of CENTCOM.
After one of his "military" advisors gets him up to speed on rendering honors to the flag when the National Anthem is being played, they'll get around to the structure and chain of command of our armed forces.

From people I've chatted on the web who have lived in the Chicagoland area, WBBM-TV was the top news station in Chicago. And with people like Bill Curtis and Walter Jacobsen anchoring in the 1970's and into the 80's, nothing could stop channel 2. Except of course the corporate beancounters at CBS and the movement of ABC-owned WLS-TV.

Just in case you happened to see the ABC News piece(if you watch ABC News) with interviews of 5 military folks in Iraq - 3 planned to vote for Obama and 2 for Hillary; no mention of any McCain supporters. Well, here's the 'Rest of the Story.'
************************************************************************
This from Major General (ret) Buckman
************************************************************************
My niece, Katelyn, stationed at Baluud, Iraq was assigned, with others of her detachment, to be escort/guard/watcher for Martha Raddatz of ABC News as she covered John McCain's recent trip to Iraq . Katelyn and her Captain stood directly behind Raddatz as she queried GIs walking past. They kept count of the GIs and you should remember these numbers. She asked 60 GIs who they planned to vote for in November. 54 said John McCain, 4 for Obama and 2 for Hillary.
Katelyn called home and told her Mom and Dad to watch ABC news the next night because she was standing directly behind Raddatz and maybe they'd see her on TV. Mom and Dad of course, called and emailed all the kinfolk to watch the newscast and maybe see Katelyn. Well, of course, we all watched and what we saw wasn't a glimpse of Katelyn, but got a hell'uva view of skewed news. After a dissertation on McCain's trip and speech, ABC showed 5 GIs being asked by Raddatz how they were going to vote in November; 3 for Obama and 2 for Clinton. No mention of the 54 for McCain.
