'Early Show' Frames Story to Make Bush Look Heartless

On Saturday’s "Early Show," host Jeff Glor framed a political headline in a way that portrays President Bush as criminally uncaring. The story was about a seven year old Orlando boy who wrote a letter to the president, pleading for him to do something to make his community safer.

Jeff Glor (Host): "And one seven year old boy's cry for help has gone as far as Capitol Hill and the White House."

Santiago Valera: (Video) "Dear Mr. President, hello, sir, my name is Santiago Santana Valera...."

Glor: "In a letter to the president, Santiago describes the shooting death of his aunt and his fear of even playing outside in Orlando, Florida now. His words were read this week on the House floor by his congressman. It led to the passage of a bill to beef up police departments nationwide. President Bush is expected to veto that legislation."

Glor offered no specifics about the bill nor did he provide any explanation as to why the president is expected to veto it. Rather, from the framing of the story, the president is portrayed as something of a heartless monster, inexplicably denying the impassioned pleas of a scared child. According to spokesman Blair Jones, the administration has spent 2.5 billion dollars on the issue since 2001.

Legislation by

Legislation by heartstrings? Sounds like a typically liberal concept to me. Ignore all the details and just sign it because a seven year old asks you to. And they say Liberals aren't all about feelings and emotions. This reminds me of the little girl who flew to the Soviet Union for "peace" back in the Eighties, they actually thought President Reagan should have taken her "mission" into account in his negotiations. Bizarre...

The dogs bark, but the caravan moves on.

Let's see.  Reagan wanted

Let's see.  Reagan wanted to starve children.  Bush wants children to be shot dead in the streets where they live.  The media just inserts the current Republican president's name along with an up-to-date "crisis" to show how uncaring and out of touch they are.

Wasn't it Bush 41 who was ridiculed when he did not know the cost of a gallon of milk?  For Pete's sake, he is the President.  He does not go to the local A&P!  I don't know that answer and I do the shopping for my house!

And not to forget: "Bush

And not to forget: "Bush hates black people ..."

"Smacks forehead"

How could I have forgot that one?

How they could have blinders toward #39 is completely beyond me.

I love the one about Seniors

I love the one about Seniors eating dog food because of the high price of medication.

I always like the seniors

I always like the seniors on dog food stories too

I mean do you know how freakin expensive dog food is!?

I sure as hell can't afford to eat it...

Yeah, I saw this.  Talk

Yeah, I saw this.  Talk about twisting a story.  If the "reporter" had knowledge that the President would be vetoing the Bill, surely he (said "reporter") would also have knowledge of the reason WHY ...

Besides, it's NOT the President of The United States job to police local neighborhoods.  The kid would have been better served writing to his local government ... mayor, city council, police chief/commissioner  ... Even the local FBI, for Petesakes!

"Dictator" Bush is a great slap at the president by the left when he wants to protect this country ... But the left expects the man to be a dictator when it comes to local and state governances ... such as in Hurricane Katrina ... and now this.

You're exactly right. . .

You're exactly right when you say that the local government is responsible for policing its own neighborhoods. There is nowhere in the Constitution that would allow the Federal government to do what these idiots expect him to do, short of declaring martial law.

Large metropolitan areas that vote Democrat are the prime example of what they would do to the country if they had half a chance. After decades of wealth redistribution, New York, Chicago, Detroit, LA, etc have little to no middle class anymore. It has been replaced with poverty, illiteracy and high crime rates.

And their solution to the problems they have created is to extend the very same policies that destroyed urban America to the rest of us.

i followed your link and rated the story one star.

What are the reasons that W is expected to veto this bill?  Seems to be the missing ingredient

Look you want heartless? I

Look you want heartless? I have a simple answer. If people
in my family were being shot, step 1: get a gun. Step 2: its called.. a
U-haul. Move the hell out! No one is making you stay. Hey you are in Florida, I
hear they have some great health care in Cuba. I had my 2 cars broken into 3
times.. I moved.

From the looks of your letter, I would think you could get a
job as a typist in a office pool. Not bad typing for a 7 year old.

What a load.

Hey, if Clinton/Reno were still in charge they would have sent in armed troops to stick their guns in the kid's face and rip him from his family's arms to ship him to Cuba ...

Mayor Guliani had a great

Mayor Guliani had a great article about the nanny government situation. He presses the point that the government is not there to remedy every facet of our everyday lives. If crime is a problem in some nasty town, it is that town's responsibility to get their act to gether and kick some a$$, much like Guliani did in NYC. And if he could do it there...well you know.

This constant, incessant drumming that the fed gov needs to do it all for everyone, needs to be kaboshed in the next election.

And hey, though it may sound like I am rootin for Rudy, I would much prefer a Reagan, but I don't see one stepping up.  : )

}}}----> Aluminum Cans for Gore

Who can forget the poor couple who travelled cross country in their Winnebego to the Democrat convention?  So poor were they, in fact, they had to collect aluminum cans along the way to pay for gas.

  1. Poor people generally sell the Winnebego before they go that broke.

  2. It costs more to idle a Winnebego than the can is worth.

 Lets not forget that if

Lets not forget that if GWB didn't veto the passage of the Pre-Crime bill, John Anderton would have been at that Burger King five minutes earlier than Santiago Valera's aunt's assailants.

So once again it's GWB's fault!

Heartless Bush?

Response from President:

Dear Santiago,

Thank you for that very eye opening letter.  I had no idea crime was getting that out of hand down there.  I have sent your parents 2 Springfield XD 60 .44 pistols, ammunition, and some free shooting lessons.  Feel free to go back outside in a month.
