On Friday’s Good Morning America, reporter David Wright (pictured at right) turned a story about Senator Barack Obama’s far-left views on sex education for kindergartners into an attack piece on Republican candidate Mitt Romney. Rather than focus on the Democrat’s controversial stance, ABC cast Romney as the villain, painting the Republican as an opportunist and a flip-flopper for daring to criticize Obama’s comments.
As Wright pointed out, "Massachusetts has one of the most progressive sex education curriculums in the country. It starts during pre-school and not only requires that elementary schools teach kids the basics about sex but encourages them to teach about sexual orientation too." In a glib tone of voice Wright explained, "Of course you’d never know that from hearing Romney on the campaign trail now."
Later, after a clip of Romney addressing a group of conservatives ended, Wright shook his head in mild disgust. Smirking, Wright suggested that the GOP candidate was pandering to conservatives: "Now as governor, Romney never sought to repeal Massachusetts’ comprehensive sex education laws, in fact he told Planned Parenthood back when he was a candidate, that he supported age-appropriate sex education much as Obama does now. Of course he was running for governor then, of a very liberal state. Now he’s trying to appeal to social conservatives."
Here is a longer portion of the story which appeared on the July 20 edition of Good Morning America:
David Wright: This week Democrat Barack Obama reaffirmed his belief that sex education should start early and be frank.
Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL): It’s the right thing to do. To provide age-appropriate sex education, science-based sex education in the schools.
Former Gov. Mitt Romney (R-MA): He said that we should have sex education in kindergarten. I'm not kidding you.
David Wright: Republican Mitt Romney quickly pounced.
Mitt Romney: I was governor four years; I never had a parent come to me, not once, and say "You know what, governor, I'm concerned about something." "What's that?" "I'm concerned we don't have enough sex education. I don't think our kids are learning enough about sex." I never heard that.
David Wright: That may be because Massachusetts has one of the most progressive sex education curriculums in the country. It starts during preschool and not only requires that elementary schools teach kids the basics about sex but encourages them to teach about sexual orientation too. Of course you’d never know that from hearing Romney on the campaign trail now.
Mitt Romney: How much sex education is age-appropriate for a five-year-old? In my view, zero is the right amount.
David Wright: Now as governor, Romney never sought to repeal Massachusetts' comprehensive sex education laws. In fact he told Planned Parenthood, back when he was a candidate, that he supported age-appropriate sex education, much as Obama does now. Of course, he was running for governor then, of a very liberal state. Now he's trying to appeal to social conservatives.
No one is going to argue that Romney hasn’t made some serious reversals in policy, particularly on social issues. The timing of Romney’s many conversions is, at the very least, suspicious. But the question remains, didn’t this report start out as a story about Obama’s comments? Does Romney’s hypocrisy let the Democratic hopeful off the hook? Wright is full of pithy comments about Romney’s past views, why not spend a little time explaining to viewers what Obama is saying on the campaign trail right now?

Obama's comment is
July 20, 2007 - 16:40 ET by GalvanicObama's comment is certainly newsworthy because it sheds some more light on his political agenda. But I can't fault the MSM for pointing out the apparent hypcrisy in Romney's retort. Had Romney said nothing, and the MSM reported about the sex ed program in Massachusetts while he was governor to make Obama sound mainstream, I'd say their reporting was overreaching.
But Romney opened his mouth, and if his quotes and the claim that he never made an attempt to repeal the sex ed program for pre-schoolers in Massachusetts are true, then his hypocrisy is worth reporting.
If a person takes a stand on principle, then he/she needs to be consistant. We slam the Left all the time for their blatant hypocrisies (And I certainly do without reservation), but if Romney plays the same game, then he only hurts the conservative movement by giving the Left "I told you so" opportunities.
New depths...
July 20, 2007 - 16:43 ET by regimeofterrorI just read the same story and thought the same thing because the AP did it as well. The link was at Drudge but gone now.
The left just continues reaching new plummets for excusing genocide. First it was Kerry's denial of genocide in Vietnam the other day and now the MSM is going to cover up for Obama saying it's no big deal? If they will casually shrug off thousands of lives how the hell are we to believe them on minor stories to tell the who truth?
We can't and they aren't.
Saddam Hussein and terrorism. The rest of the story...

It's the typical equivilence paradigm.
July 20, 2007 - 16:53 ET by c5thenIf someone says or does something bad or wrong or questionable, as long as you can find a relative equal who has done or said something bad or wrong or questionable too, it makes it all OK.
In this particular case, I think they point out the underlying issues that prove that Obama is unfit to be President and that Romney has flipped so many times depending on what office he is running for and where, that he can't be trusted to have any principles that he follows.
The day that "politician" became a career choice is the day we started losing the Republic
Romney had NOTHING to do with Mass liberalism
July 20, 2007 - 18:21 ET by exLibYou can't go and blame Romney for the blantant liberalism of Massachusetts, that's just ridiculous.
Mitt governed as a Conservative in the state and NOT as a liberal. Can he help it if you legislature is like 90% Dems? If he tries to veto something they just override it.
BTW, it was in Massachusetts that a man tried to protest that a school was teaching his kid that Homosexuality was ok and wanted to opt out.
First the school had the man foreably removed from a meeting, he then spent a night in jail.
Then when he sued the school the judge tossed out the case saying the school had jurisdiction when the kid was in school and didn't need to inform the parents about anything.
This is SCARY and should scare all right-thinking parents. The end goal here is turn kids against their parents if they are conseravtive.
I think it would be time for
July 21, 2007 - 20:11 ET by Conservative VoiceI think it would be time for another boston tea party if I were the parents.
If you can't walk on water, Mitt, you're a failure
July 20, 2007 - 21:49 ET by nkviking75So Romney was supposed to roll back decades of Massachusetts liberalism during his tenure? For all Ronald Reagan accomplished, a lot of liberalism's legacy survived Reagan's presidency. If Romney had pulled off a miracle and made Mass. a conservative paradise, the weeping and gnashing of teeth could be heard around the world.
When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.
This piece by the militant
July 20, 2007 - 22:24 ET by TEThis piece by the militant leftist fool David Wright is similar to a recent piece that I saw on either ABC "News", CBS "News" or NBC "News" (I don't remember which one it was). Anyway, after Al Gore's son was arrested for gross speeding (traveling over 100 mph), marijuana possession and illegally carrying a pharmacy of unprescribed prescription drugs in his car, this particular "News" outfit did a story not on Al Gore's son, but instead focused their story on the Bush twins' arrest (about 6 years ago) for underage drinking and Patti Davis posing in Playboy about 20 years ago!!!!
