Obama-Infatuated Newsweek Reporter Defends Obama for Not Leaving Jeremiah Wright’s Church

Last week Newsweek reporter Allison Samuels defended Barack Obama's decision not to leave the church of Rev. Jeremiah Wright whose America-hating sermons have become a big political issue on the campaign trail. Responding to questions from host Greta van Susteren on the Fox News show "On the Record" May 5, Samuels goes easy on Obama, excusing his decision to stick with Wright for years after Obama supporter Oprah Winfrey quit the Trinity United Church of Christ (apparently) in disgust. (Video here, transcript here, Samuels article on the same subject in May 12 Newsweek here)

But what Samuels didn't disclose to TV viewers was that she is no neutral observer standing on the sidelines making a good faith effort to objectively chronicle the truth for posterity. More on that in a moment.

On May 5, Samuels said Obama joined the church because he was "searching for his identity as an African-American and as an African-American male." Winfrey didn't need to go on the same quest because, unlike Obama, she grew up in a "traditional African-American household," Samuels said. So, Samuels argued, Winfrey didn't need an "instruction manual from Reverend Wright to tell her about racism in America...[but] Obama, he did need that. He did need to sort of hear those words."

Samuels's defense of Obama makes perfect sense given her own words published a few weeks earlier which strongly suggest she is just another journalist who has fallen in love with the junior senator from Illinois.

Samuels wrote an op-ed in Newsweek, called "The Legacy of My Grandmother," after some of her feminist friends accused her of disloyalty to that cause for not supporting Hillary Clinton for president.

The column, published March 17, leaves little doubt that Samuels is a passionate Obama supporter. Some excerpts from the essay:

A few of my more socially progressive girlfriends have expressed surprise and dismay that, as a woman, I seem to feel no particular allegiance to Hillary Clinton and her quest to become the first female president. They question my sisterhood and my support for women attaining real power. I'd like to say their accusations bother me, but they don't...

...the demise of the black family, the growing number of young black men behind bars and the faces of [Hurricane] Katrina all haunt me and remind me constantly that, until there is an honest conversation about race in this country, African-Americans will continue to lag behind in income, health care and education. My desire to see someone at the top care about these issues, too, trumps my desire to see a woman in the White House.

Obama's presence alone forces a change of dialogue. [Italics in original] Just one look at Michelle Obama and the couple's two beautiful daughters speaks volumes about the diversity of this country and the possibility for anyone who fights the fair fight to have a chance to succeed. Whatever your politics, it is hard to deny how transformative it would be to see those two girls playing on the White House lawn, or watch Michelle's elegant charm as she works the room at an official White House dinner.

When I see Obama, I see a black man who can redefine what it means to be a minority in this country-a man whose very presence may actually encourage the black men I know to believe in their own futures and force those around them to do the same.

I know that a woman president would change the course of history, too, and many might even argue that gender is far more of an albatross than race. That just hasn't been my experience. I know Gloria Steinem might not agree with my decision to be swayed by Obama's poise, intellect, beliefs and, yes, his color. But like my grandmother before me, I can't afford the luxury of fighting two battles when one is so clearly a matter of life and death.

Wouldn't it have been better for Samuels to disclose her personal bias on TV so that viewers could have decided for themselves how much weight to give to her words?

(Note: I would have written about this earlier but I missed the show and only learned of it when Yahoo! News belatedly spotlighted it May 11. Further note: This blog post contains the personal opinions of the author and does not reflect the views of his employer.)

So Obama stayed with Wright

So Obama stayed with Wright because he was "searching for his identity as an African-American and as an African-American male." And it took him 20 years to decide that Wright's version of African-American male wasn't who he wanted to be? It didn't take Oprah Winfrey long at all to figure out Wright!

And oh please, not the "conversation on race" card again!!! How many times are we going to hear that? Exactly what does Ms. Samuels think needs to be said that hasn't been said already?

Maybe it took him 20 years to learn how to tell a lie convincingly.

It's not just Wright...

Take a look at some of the material his church puts out or the new "hip-hop pastor" Otis Moss III preaching a "gospel remix". The new is much like the old, as his own words show:

{

Moss, the 37-year-old "hip-hop pastor," as he’s called by congregants, will become head of Trinity in June, after serving as an assistant pastor there for two years.

But a videotape of a sermon he delivered at Wright’s church shows this "wonderful young pastor” referring to "ghetto prophets" and "thug theology," calling the late rapper Tupac Shakur a "prophet," and reciting at length lyrics to Shakur’s song "Thugz Mansion."

Moss also states in the sermon:

"Jesus has a soft spot for thugs."

"God is always using thugs to do God’s work."

"Everyone has a little bit of thug in them."

Noah was a "thug" who "was drinking much gin and juice and got drunk on the eve of reconstruction."

Abraham "pimped his own wife."

Jacob was a "hustler" who "stole his own brother’s birthright."

Moses was a "thug" and "if he got mad would give you a royal beatdown."

Sampson was a "thug" and a "player."

David was a "thug," a "shot caller," and a "player," and a man after God’s own heart.

"Jesus is on the cross being lynched between two thugs. The moment of execution, the moment of murder, Jesus, the son of God, is hanging out with thugs."

In an interview last month with National Public Radio, Moss refused to distance himself from claims by Wright that the U.S. government was involved in distributing illegal drugs to minorities.
}

The sad part is that Wright was not the exception at that church, and that church's views are not uncommon in exclusively or near-exclusively black churches. When is taught that "everyone has a little bit of thug in them" and that "God has a great love for thugs because thugs can reach other thugs" rather than that we are all sinners in need of grace, the church has fallen. Wright was just the tip of the iceberg, people.

We can't have an "honest conversation about race" until it is actually conducted as a conversation (with two-way give and take dialogue) instead of the usual black representative lecturing the white folk about how bad things are for the black community because of what white people do to them.  Unfortunately, it appears as if the black leaders don't want an honest coversation.

This is akin to trying to have an honest conversation and debate about climate change with Algore and his suck-wad lackies!

And I'm tired of hearing about hurricane Katrina!

He said an "honest conversation".

That means you can ask one question.  You will then be politely corrected for the bias in your question.  A followup rebuttal will be seen as racism.

Let the discussion begin.

You don't mind if I just sit silently and observe, do you?

At this point, I'd be more

At this point, I'd be more inclined to lay in with a club than sit and watch, and I've got several black friends who feel the same way. One has to wonder how to recover after multiple generations of liberal, "woe is me", "the man's keepin' us down", "you white crackas owe me" brainwashing.

Ms. Samuels, I've had this

Ms. Samuels, I've had this conversation before, so I'll start:

You think we need a black President to uplift young black men? Well I have news for you. Government can't force young black men to keep it in their pants, or to stay away from gangs, or to stay in school. They can't force young black women to wait until they are married to have sex and have babies.
Your so-called "black leaders" need to address so-called "Black Culture" with it's 70% unmarried birth rate and the resulting "matriarchal" society, (with no fathers to influence the young boys as they grow), and start talking about what it's doing to black youth, young black men in particular.

By following just a few simple steps, a lot of black poverty can be alleviated: graduate from high school, get a job, don't have a baby until you're married. It's not rocket science. You tell me why you don't think young black men and women are capable of doing these simple, basic things unless we have a black President.

Your turn.

The Book of the Obammasiah ch. 1

The Book of The Obamassiah The Obamassiah shall reveal himself to us by his teachings, which will be the spoken word in the form of the finest silk and silver.

Do not fear if the words of the Obamassiah are not at first clear, you need only to hear them and believe.  Be not afraid if the feeling of a cool breeze runs up one’s leg.  Do not fear if the words of his glory remove you from your senses and fainting occurs.

Our savior shall become known to us by  the wreath of arugala upon his head and his ears for they shall take the form of the handles of a jug of the finest wine.

Book of the Obamasiah ch. 2

 I.  Thou shalt not speak the middle name of the Obamassiah. To do so exposes thine as a racist and it shall not be tolerated.

II.  Thou shalt not mention past associations of the Obamassiah.  To do so exposes thine as a racist.  For despite any recent or current friendship his holiness may have with them, he was only a child when they ran afoul of the law.  Or he missed that sermon.

III. Thou shalt not mention praise of the Obamassiah by murderers and tyrants.  To do so exposes thine as a racist, it is a sign that thine has truly lost one’s bearings

Book of the Obamassiah ch. 3

IV.  Thou shalt not mention the schooling of the Obamassiah at any point in his existence.  To do so exposes thine as a racist.

V.  Thou shalt not question the Obamassiah more than eight times.  To do so exposes thine as a racist.  For the time of his holiness is of a value beyond your own.

VI.  Thou shalt not question the past of the Obamassiah family arrival or his birth.  To do so exposes thine as a racist.  For events in time matter not if they occur differently than his holiness speaks of them.  It matters only that you believe.

Book of the Obamassiah ch. 4

VII.  Thou shalt not question the words of the Obamassiah’s  spouse.  For if her words mirror those of the past associations of his holiness then thine is a racist twice over for the mention of them. (see II)

VIII.  The purveyors of words to the people shall cast only praise on the Obamassiah.  To turn from this exposes thine as a racist and a soldier of the unbeliever and thine should be cast out and lose any source of livelihood.

IX.  Thou shalt not question the patriotism of the Obamassiah.  To do so exposes thine as a racist.  For by not displaying any outward love for his land only proves his love for his land.

Those unenlightened to the truth, and the light, and the way of the Obamassiah shall cling to armaments and religions other than that of the Obamassiah and will mistrust his glory for they understand it not.

This is the word of the Obamassiah.

Miss Allison put the blame

Miss Allison should put the blame where it belongs for the disintegration of the black family: on the liberal welfare state - that is, the Great Society and all of its policies.

There is none so blind as they that won’t see. Jonathan Swift 1667-1745

Let these apologists

Let these apologists continue.  When the 527's get finished with Obama, he will be lucky if it's only a 65-35 loss.  Nobody who is not a racist wants Rv Wright anywhere near the White House as he surely shall be if Obama is elected.

If Only That Was his Message!

This would all be wonderful if the message from BHO and his America hating wife and Pastor was one of success is possible in America if you only try!

Unfortunately, he holds himself up as one who has "escaped" the racism in America and has succeeded in spite of it!  That opportunity isn't available to anyone else and he is here to "Fix" the problem of American Racism!  Same old story from the race-baiting leaders of the Black community.

His message is I'll tax those racist rich Whites and give it to you poor down-trodden victims.  Just vote for me and you won't have to work again.  Just sit back and your income will be given to you by me, Saint Obama.  work an entry-level job and you'll make enough to feed your family of 5 because it's only "Fair" that flipping hambergers should pay the same as being a CEO.

Healthcare- FREE Paid for by theose Rich White folks.

New home - FREE Paid for by those Rich White folks.

Jobs - Why bother, unemployment income  from those Rich White Folks.

Just Vote for Saint BHO!

We are SO SCREWED!

I remember the last time

I remember the last time that calls were made for candidate for public office to leave their church in order to attain office... it was in England when the Crown decided if you weren't a member of the Anglican Church, you were unfit to hold office.  I also remember the Founders deciding that wasn't any way to run a government.  We can all agree or disagree with Wright's comments, but calling for a candidate to renounce his church?  That's just downright un-American!

No onews asking him to

No onews asking him to renounce the entire Church...just Rev. Wright. The hate he spouted certainly wasn't Church teaching; that was his own bile that had no business in the pulpit.

Whoa Bubba!

King of England created the Anglican Church for another reason altogether like maybe to get around a small marriage issue.

I think the new "Churches of America" ala socialist-democrats are The Global Warming Church of the Always Anytime Believers and Racists Who are Black are Not Really Racists Church of the Intolerant & Hateful.

Which one do you belong to?
