Open Thread: Another Dismal Jobs Number

By Matthew Sheffield | July 06, 2012 | 10:39

A  A
Matthew Sheffield's picture

Today's starter topic: The unemployment rate is continuing to hold steady as the economy seems to be stagnating. Just 80,000 jobs nationwide were created in June.

While headlines like this will make it onto conservative blogs, they aren't likely to create a big splash in big media outlets dominated by liberals. As NewsBusters has noted, the media were overwhelmingly negative about an unemployment rate of 5.4 percent when George W. Bush was president. A direct comparison of unemployment rates from Ronald Reagan's first term and Barack Obama's term has yielded similar liberal bias about joblessness.

Given that the media are less likely to spread negative news about the economy under a Democratic president than they are under a Republican, will this fact be enough to protect Obama from people's own direct observations of unemployment?

I am a big fan of Major Garrett, and I think he would be excellent on MTP. Gregory is a failure IMO. I too hated when he left Fox and agree w/Blonde that he was underutilized there.

I don't think NBC would bring him on because of his association w/Fox which is to bad because he would be more in the Russert category and play it straight down the middle and be tough on both sides. Not just a shill for NBC as Gregory is.

14.9% will not be voting for Oblameo

Submitted by Andante on Fri, 07/06/2012 - 11:45am.

According to Oblameo’s own Bureau of Labor Statistics, unemployment is not 8.2%; >>>UNEMPLOYMENT IS 14.9 %<<< when real-world "U-6" data is used.

Oblameo’s media refuses to tell the public that the 8.2% unemployment number does not include the hundreds of thousands of jobs that no longer exist, the educated underemployed and it ignores the number of folks who have stopped looking for jobs.

From:
http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.t15.htm

“Persons marginally attached to the labor force are those who currently are neither working nor looking for work but indicate that they want and are available for a job and have looked for work sometime in the past 12 months. Discouraged workers, a subset of the marginally attached, have given a job-market related reason for not currently looking for work. Persons employed part time for economic reasons are those who want and are available for full-time work but have had to settle for a part-time schedule.”

I see that Boy Baraka pulled

Submitted by killa37 on Fri, 07/06/2012 - 11:48am.

I see that Boy Baraka pulled into some bar/restaurant yesterday on his 'spread the word/wealth Canadian bus tour', and told the manager to turn off Fox News while he was downing a beer with a rather corpulant white lady - which probably made Moooooooooooochelle see red.................oh, wait, she allready sees red. And I understand that Boy BlahBlah told everybody to 'just pretend that I'm not here'. Hey, Baraka - we'd LOVE to just pretend that you're not here - in the same way as we'd like to just pretend that we don't have a malignant tumor!!!

I know that part of the plan is to nullify and numbify (is that a word?) the 'proletariat' so much that they put up with anything and everything - and I have to admit that Boy Baraka has numbified me completely, when it comes to his abject and unmitigated lack of class, style, humility, and grace. And he even said 'MY plan' when referring to Obamacare...............and we all know how much work he put into that!!! I'm willing to bet that he couldn't even tell you what was in it - other than the fact that he likes it!!!

The worst that could happen to West - in a cage 'fight' with Belcher Bob - is that he would get that crappy hair dye all over his hands...............and probably have some alcohol/drug smelling sweat on hisself. ( I hear that Beckel is a reformed alkie/drug addict - but given the way he acts, talks, and thinks - I'll bet that he's still got a lot of it in his system!!!)

And I think it would be hard to 'debate' the half-drowned cocker spaniel, because you wouldn't be able to get in a word edgewise, AND you'd have to be in the same room as her, which would keep your hands over your mouth, just so you wouldn't vomit!!!

Killa, addicts never fully recover.

Submitted by drsamherman on Fri, 07/06/2012 - 1:37pm.

At some point they will rebound. It happens universally, no matter how much they try. It's not an indictment of addiction medicine, but instead the realization that our treatment of substance abusers and addicts has shifted away from trying to induce and maintain abstinence from whatever substance(s) are being abused, but to one of harm reduction where we try to control what long term damage they have already done and deal with the medical consequences and the psychiatric ones simultaneously. Programs like AA are great, but I add the underlying caveat that the patient needs to attend them in addition to remaining adherent (compliant) 100% with medications we use to treat addiction and underlying psychiatric illnesses.

I have relatives in AA, and if you work the program, it works. The key is to recognize that they can NEVER drink again. Also, the meetings are very theraputic for my loved ones. It works on changing the whole mindset of the person.

Like anything else, it doesn't work for everyone, but please don't tell me it can't work for some. I need my hope, because dealing with an addict is extremely painful and can be debilitating.

I hope it works for you relatives, Rad.

Submitted by Newsbubba on Fri, 07/06/2012 - 3:38pm.

I have several friends who are in AA, and as long as they keep going to the meetings, it works well for them.

In this town, it ain't easy being an alcoholic, that's for sure.  They fight it every day, but manage to get by day by day.

In fact, one of my buddies has found that AA meetings is a great place to pick up women who obviously have the same interests.  He's really made the best of it.  I've been accusing him of never actually ever been a drunk, and he just uses that to pick up chicks.

One guy has not been sober since Viet Nam, until the doctor told him about a year ago that he could just go ahead and plan his funeral if he didn't stop drinking.  He stopped cold turkey that day and hasn't had a drink since.  I am still amazed.

So there is hope, but keep them in the system.  As you said, it works if you work it.

The IRS, Health and Human Services and many other agencies will now write thousands of pages of regulations — an effort well under way: “There’s already 13,000 pages of regulations, and they’re not even done yet,” Rehberg said.

I typed the comment, and when I hit "Post as", the message referencing the moderator popped up.

The comment still hasn't been put through.

I just thought it odd that the word 'ass' apparently caused a disturbance in The Force; while the F bombs, in all their glory, rained down like Hellfire missiles.

Talk about swallowing an elephant whole and then choking on a gnat.

Hilarious.

Inconsistent, too -  yes; but that very inconsistency adds to the humor of picturing a "moderator" snoring away at the keyboard during a duty tour.

From my previous experience, it would seem the post to which you were replying was flagged for review. When that happens, all posts in reply to that post are also automatically flagged by the system because the initial post may be removed, as well as a flagged post standing a exponentially higher incident of having derogatory comments in reply, for obvious reasons.

It doesn't actually have anything to do with what you wrote, but is an indicator that the post you are replying to is flagged.

Hope that clears it up a bit, bud.

Ahh, that makes sense.

All my complaining - for nothing.

Rats.  :o)

Thanks, and much appreciated !.

I'm stayin' (Obamaspeak) away

Submitted by killa37 on Sat, 07/07/2012 - 8:10pm.

I'm stayin' (Obamaspeak) away from that whole venue, guys and gals..................it's just too convoluted for the ol' simple-minded country-boy Killa!!! I'm used to normal conversation, done in some sort of coherent and understandable fashion. I've looked through some of it, but there's a lot of 'too much a'nothing' going on for me. I know we can get a little animated over here in the old-fashioned threads, but I've found that things tend to work out, and I think there's room for learning more things and becomnig more informed, since there is often a lot of information being presented here.

Call me old-fashioned and out-of-touch, I guess. Plus, I'm gettin' tired of having to scroll down through dozens and dozens of tweets, twits, twerps, and discotexts in order to find out what the 'common folks' are commenting about. I think we've been relegated to the back of the bus, and sometime soon, we'll be asked to leave alltogether.

I agree w Killa

I use the new format out of necessity, but I find the old format to be less limiting and more appealing.

Unfortunately, I think NB is headed the way of Yahoo!, where quick hits are more important than serious discussion. I hope I'm wrong.
