Open Thread: The Great California Exodus
Today's starter topic: The left has long believed that taxes and regulations don't have an impact on economies. Reality says otherwise as the current anemic economic recovery has proven but also as the mass exodus from the state of California has demonstrated:
The first thing that comes to many American minds when you mention California isn't Hollywood or tanned girls on a beach, but Greece. Many progressives in California take that as a compliment since Greeks are ostensibly happier. But as Mr. Kotkin notes, Californians are increasingly pursuing happiness elsewhere.
Nearly four million more people have left the Golden State in the last two decades than have come from other states. This is a sharp reversal from the 1980s, when 100,000 more Americans were settling in California each year than were leaving. According to Mr. Kotkin, most of those leaving are between the ages of 5 and 14 or 34 to 45. In other words, young families.
The scruffy-looking urban studies professor at Chapman University in Orange, Calif., has been studying and writing on demographic and geographic trends for 30 years. Part of California's dysfunction, he says, stems from state and local government restrictions on development. These policies have artificially limited housing supply and put a premium on real estate in coastal regions.
"Basically, if you don't own a piece of Facebook or Google and you haven't robbed a bank and don't have rich parents, then your chances of being able to buy a house or raise a family in the Bay Area or in most of coastal California is pretty weak," says Mr. Kotkin.
While many middle-class families have moved inland, those regions don't have the same allure or amenities as the coast. People might as well move to Nevada or Texas, where housing and everything else is cheaper and there's no income tax.

That the liberals / socialists are trying hard to get everywhere to be socilist. That way people will have no where to run to. As long as there are those pesky free-market libertarian enclaves like Arizona, Texas, Wyoming, etc... where taxes are low, services are kept to a minimum and quality of life is high, there will always be an escape from places like California and New York.

We are out of here!! I was born and raised in California, and it once was the greatest place to live, no more. Aerospace, once the biggest industry here is gone and DEAD, as is most large industries, do to the NIMBY's and Tree Huggers. The state is run, top to bottom by enviro nuts, that have Cap and Trade as a state policy. The once fertile central valley, the bread basket of CA is a desert wasteland, because they wont allow water to be sent there because of some snail in the river delta.
Lunatics!! They run the state now, and all that is going to be left is Govt. employees, the super rich, sipping wine in Napa, and the poor. A totally UNSUSTAINABLE super left, uber socialist state!!
My wife and I make good money, and could live like kings anywhere else, but we live paycheck to paycheck, barely making it here. I live in the home I always wanted, but with property taxes, and all of the taxes in general are making life difficult. I dont know where we will go to, but ANYWHERE is better than here!

I left California 16 years ago. My Idaho friends started to accuse me of bring California to Idaho. I assured them that as a conservative, I was escaping California and all its liberal minions.
I did try to stay and fix California, but my conservative vote was swamped out by the idiot liberals, so I gave up and left.
My father was from Kellog, ID and almost every summer we vacationed in Idaho. I fell in love with the place. When I got a job offer from an Idaho compay We jumped at the chance to move away from the left coast and all of its horrors.
After we settled in Boise, just for fun, I went over to the statehouse and asked around about registering as a "political refugee". Every one of the state workers I talked to got the joke.
Sadly, I arrived in Ada county just before it went democrat. The mayor, city council, county supervisors are mostly democrat. This county and one other (Sun Valley) went for Obama. 99% of the state elected offices are Republican. Congress meets for only 3 months out of the year, and the constitution was written with a balanced budget requirement.
Suits me just fine. I pay $100 per car for liability insurance, $165 for full coverage. I bought a 4500 sqft house for less than I sold my 1700 sqft. house in California and I pay less property taxs on the bigger house. I used to pay $300+ a month for electricity. Now, if the bill goes above $125 a month I start looking for air leaks.
So do not consider me a spoiler of Idaho. I'm just another escaped California taxpayer that embraces the conservative, Idaho lifestyle.
Now the bad news. We have to drive down to SoCal Friday to attend a birthday party, among other things. We hope to escape early Sunday morning.
Wish us a safe trip??
