In Memoriam: Andrew Breitbart
This morning the unexpected news came that conservative internet publisher Andrew Breitbart has passed away. His business manager Larry Solov has posted the following announcement on websites affiliated with Breitbart. [This is a developing story, see below for statements from his former boss Matt Drudge, Brent Bozell, Rush Limbaugh, Mark Levin, and Michelle Malkin.]
With a terrible feeling of pain and loss we announce the passing of Andrew Breitbart.
Andrew passed away unexpectedly from natural causes shortly after midnight this morning in Los Angeles.
We have lost a husband, a father, a son, a brother, a dear friend, a patriot and a happy warrior.
Andrew lived boldly, so that we more timid souls would dare to live freely and fully, and fight for the fragile liberty he showed us how to love.
Andrew recently wrote a new conclusion to his book, Righteous Indignation:
"I love my job. I love fighting for what I believe in. I love having fun while doing it. I love reporting stories that the Complex refuses to report. I love fighting back, I love finding allies, and—famously—I enjoy making enemies.
"Three years ago, I was mostly a behind-the-scenes guy who linked to stuff on a very popular website. I always wondered what it would be like to enter the public realm to fight for what I believe in. I’ve lost friends, perhaps dozens. But I’ve gained hundreds, thousands—who knows?—of allies. At the end of the day, I can look at myself in the mirror, and I sleep very well at night."
Andrew is at rest, yet the happy warrior lives on, in each of us.

What a shock to the conservative movement and to internet veterans everywhere. I knew Andrew for a number of years and there was no question as to his sincerity of purpose. He succeeded in ways greater than he likely ever dreamed in his desire to help the right learn to toughen up and understand how the left views politics as the moral equivalent of war.
We wish the best for Breitbart and his family. His fiery soul and sense of humor will be greatly missed.
Update 10:12. MRC president and NewsBusters publisher Brent Bozell has released the following on Breitbart's passing:
Today we have a lost a truly brilliant mind and a tireless warrior for the conservative movement. Andrew was one of the few good guys who knew Hollywood inside and out. He coupled that knowledge with the creativity and passion that has become his trademark, offering it for the cause that he so believed in. The entire Breitbart family will be in our thoughts and prayers. May he rest in peace.
Update 10:17. Brian Maloney at the Radio Equalizer is collecting statements in Breitbart's honor from America's top conservative radio talk show hosts. So far he's got tributes from Rush Limbaugh and Mark Levin. Here's part of what Limbaugh said:
"His passing is such a huge loss, to everyone who knew him. There was, literally, no one like him. As such, he is a legend now. He was culturally refined and a bulldog at the same time. And he was credible, always credible. It's just a shame."
Levin on Breitbart: "I am stunned and deeply saddened. Andrew was a wonderful person and patriot. He loved his family and his country."
Update 10:32. Great tribute to Breitbart by Michelle Malkin: "I’m stunned. He was kinetic, brash, relentless, full of fight, the bane of the Left, and a mentor to the next generation of right-wing activists and citizen journalists. [...] He will be greatly missed, but his legacy online and in the conservative movement is built to last."
Update 10:40. Some more details on Breitbart's death via the Daily Caller's Alex Pappas:
Katie Bosland, an ABC producer, tweets, “LA Coroner’s office has confirmed to @ABC that Andrew Breitbart passed away last night at UCLA Medical Center.”
Pollak said he couldn’t immediately provide more details on Breitbart’s passing.
“None additional,” he said.
Breitbart was walking near his house in the Brentwood neighborhood shortly after midnight Thursday when he collapsed, his father-in-law Orson Bean said.
Someone saw him fall and called paramedics, who tried to revive him. They rushed him to the emergency room at UCLA Medical Center, Bean said.
Breitbart had suffered heart problems a year earlier, but Bean said he could not pinpoint what happened.
“I don’t know what to say. It’s devastating,” Bean told The Associated Press.
Update 10:50. In June of last year, Breitbart released his autobiography Righteous Indignation. I interviewed him about it in a wide-ranging discussion. One part which stands out today is Breitbart's recollection of his first and second appearances on liberal comedian Bill Maher's show. He didn't stand up for his beliefs the first time and was invited back for a second appearance. This time, he decided to stand his ground:
I stood off to the side before I went out into the seating area opposite Professor Michael Eric Dyson, a race-bating sociology professor, and opposite Maher, in a hostile crowd. I went in, and it was a worst-case scenario, and the entire time I kept doubling-down on standing up for what I believe in. I defended Rush Limbaugh on the false charges of racism, I defended the Tea Party on the false charges of racism, the crowd booed me, Sarah Silverman mocked me, the audience interrupted me before I could get my sentences out.
But their boos, I got to sneer at the smirks from Bill Maher, and it was singularly hideous. I went back to my dressing room where friends and family were, and it was like a funeral. They started to rationalize how my life would eventually come back to me over months, perhaps years, and they thought it was like the death of my career, the end of my self-respect and dignity.
I looked at them and I basically looked at myself because I was starting to realize something interesting had happened. I looked at them and said “you don’t understand, that was the best moment of my entire life because I recognized the thing that I feared the most,” wholesale rejection from that many people, perhaps millions in the audience, watching on the television, the majority of the crowd, the popular host, the guest, Sarah Silverman, lovely, funny comedian that I like her type of work. Everyone rejected me, and it was an exultant moment, because I realized, yeah, it’s fun to be liked, but when standing up for what you believe in, it’s also very fun not to be liked.
Update 12:13. Breitbart's former boss Matt Drudge has now given his tribute to him:
DEAR READER: In the first decade of the DRUDGEREPORT Andrew Breitbart was a constant source of energy, passion and commitment. We shared a love of headlines, a love of the news, an excitement about what's happening. I don't think there was a single day during that time when we did not flash each other or laugh with each other, or challenge each other. I still see him in my mind's eye in Venice Beach, the sunny day I met him. He was in his mid 20's. It was all there. He had a wonderful, loving family and we all feel great sadness for them today... MDRUDGE
Update 16:50. Some nice flashbacks to think of Breitbart today. My NB colleague Brent Baker has video of him accepting one of our mock "dishonors" awards on behalf of Chris Matthews in 2009, complete with sarcastic speech.
Our friends at Accuracy in Media have made a compilation of Breitbart at his best and funniest.
Also here at NB, in 2010, Noel Sheppard clipped Breitbart making a later appearance on Bill Maher's show and completely eviscerating the highly partisan Democrat for his ridiculous claim that he's a "libertarian."

Along with everyone else I was shocked and saddened to learn of Andrew's passing. For some unknown reason, I've been holding back the tears all day.
That is, until I read your post, which skipped along the surface, sank into my heart and became the dam buster.
Time for the rest of us to step up, pick up the banner, and carry on with the fight for all our sakes and to honor Andrew.
God Bless America.

I know other sites are screaming "conspiracy" about his death already because of his age and this "natural causes" thing and the libs have a lot to gain from his death, this much is absolutely true.

about HuffPo's "busy editing". I think the embarrassment over the tasteless remarks which accompanied the report of Tony Snow's death may have been the catalyst for HuffPo implementing full moderation of the comment threads.
Of course the reaction here to Kennedy's death wasn't exactly a model of decorum. The cynic in me has always harbored the thought that NB's 'Great Archive Erasure' may have been in part motivated by the desire to expunge all evidence of that outpouring of invective. ;-)

I'm not part of a group of people that are trying to enslave everyone but they sure like to project their own ideas on conservatives of the same. Only difference is, the dems/libs ARE actually trying to enslave the American people. You say they "believe" but I don't believe that for a second. Deeds, not words, as Mark Twain would say.
This is the kind of stuff that Brietbart sought to expose.

I know you'll remember that I had nothing negative to say about T. Kennedy on his death, but the fact remains that he was a sexual predator, lecher, and hedonist extraordinaire who made his living off the taxpayers. There's not even a remote comparison between his death and Brietbart's, but liberals are sure as hell trying to draw one to excuse their despicable behavior.
I do remember that, Bru, and I know you'll remember that

Look...to you and Rad and others: I'll let God sort out who are the better angels among us. But on the occasion of someone's death, I prefer to heed the old saw that if you can't say something nice about that person, don't say anything at all.
There is plenty of time before and after their departure from this realm that the scoundrels can be appropriately pummeled.

But the day I take advice from liberals about being civil is the day I become a liberal myself, which is NEVER.
I don't know if you believe this or not, but by and large and I do mean LARGE, the majority of the liberals out there are exactly what Rush says they are, not to mention the rest of us conservatives on here, which is those people who seek to tax everyone and make us less of a super power, take from the rich, and etc etc etc.
Quite honestly, I don't know of any other kind of liberal, especially when they ESPOUSE these ideas, including living in a shiny happy utopia where everything is taken care of, because if there was any other kind of liberal, they aren't liberals.
So where do you fit in as a liberal, Jer?
As we have seen before, these calls of "civility" from the dems, such as just after the Tuscon Shooting(most people call it Giffords shooting, but there was more than one victim that day), and then comes some of the most hateful spiteful stuff to come out, well, forget it. Thanks, but no thanks.

Seriously, Ted Kennedy's character was questionable, to put it mildly. The attempt when he died to make him into a saint was rather sickening when one considered how he treated women and the decadent lifestyle he said.
I had kind of the same reaction when I heard Whitney Houston described as an "amazing mother". I don't think it's necessary to berate the dead, but lets not make stuff up, as a drug addict is not an "amazing mother" by virtue of being an addict.
I haven't heard any personal revelations about Breightbart that would lead me to believe he left a woman to die, made a waitress sandwich, caroused with his nephews in Florida, etc.

I am 58, ideal weight, eat healthy, run 5 miles a day. This past weekend I developed a Deep Vein Thrombosis that if not treated in a timely manner can kill you. All the docs in the emergency room could not believe I had one because of my history and fitness...things just happen.

Why is it that the good people seem to have these kinds of things happen to them while the evil ones live on(most of them anyway, unlike Ted Kennedy but he was already a drunken old sot anyway).
The undeniable thing is, Brietbart was a HUGE thorn in DuhOne's side, especially after that exposure regarding SIEU/ACORN and other things.
You KNOW the WH has to be jumping for joy at this.

I just woke up over here in Asia/Hawaii, so this is the first piece of news that I have read, and it's bad news!!! I had a lot of respect for Breitbarts guts, balls, and passion...........he put his beliefs on the line, and he backed them up with factual evidence.
You're right about Brietbart being a huge burr under Boy Barry's sidesaddle, and as ghoulish as this may sound, I can't help but think that these creeps in the White House are celebrating Brietbarts death and probably even being relieved, with the idea that Andrew won't be around to come up with more TRUE dirt on the REGIME during the upcoming election...................and you KNOW that the Republican establishment won't!!!!
And, yeah, I'd take 43 in a heartbeat!!!Obviously it didn't work for Brietbart - I'd still like to know the whole story of why he died.

It is not genetic...no one else in the family has had one. I am set to see a hematologist to see if there is something there. The Friday before I cut down about seven tress on a mountainous slope (very physical) and moved a couple hundred rocks the size of a basketball weighing ~60 lbs. . I was building a rock wall. One of the docs postulated I may have damaged a vein via blunt trauma, but that is all they could guess.

My dad died at 44. He was in great shape and had no known risk factors. He developed a brain tumor the size of a tennis ball. He never complained of pain but was tired a lot. I saw Andrew several weeks ago on TV and saw many comments about people wondering if was exhausted or drunk. I passed it off as he always had a unique speaking cadence. I'm now wondering if this weren't a warning sign.
A true champion of Liberty and Truth. I for one am saddened by his passing, but am thankful we had him at a time when we needed him most. I pray I am up to carrying on his example. He was fierce in his beliefs, kind to his opposition (much kinder than me) and courageous in the face of pure hatred.

Stunning and so sad.
For those who question "natural causes" for a man his age, 43 is not too young for a massive heart attack or stroke. Let's not throw in with the left-wing haters who would want to dig up dirt in order to destroy Breitbart's legacy.

Just like it did the passing of Tony Snow, my local newspaper takes down comments sharing the news of a good man, Andrew Breitbart, passing.
I am disgusted by a "mainstream media" full of "authorized journalists" bent on not telling the truth. They care more about controlling information, only sharing the information they want to, when they want to, how they want to, than they do about the substance of it.
Thanks for being here NewsBusters, MRC. Just as Andrew did, you provide a glint of hope that all is not lost.

Losing someone who fought so strongly and smartly is always so tragic. My thoughts and prayers are with his family in this terrible time.
The really depressing thing is how rotten some leftists can be, singing their songs and mocking the deceased because they don't have the human decency to put aside their differences for at least one day and offer their condolences. They say character is what you are in the dark, and I think this proves what kind of people those are almost disturbingly well.

These "compassionate" leftists are not only hateful, they are arrogant and selfish.
They care not for Andrew's wife and 4 kids; all they can think of is that THEY are happy he is gone.
Glenn Beck just talked about someone tweeting that the world is now a better place, and David Freddoso of National Review tweeting back "Is it a better place for his children?"
They care for no one and nothing but their own ends. They probably think Breitbart's family deserve to be devastated, for being related to someone they think is scum.

I used to be very naive. When that young man (his name escapes me at the moment) exposed ACORN, I stupidly thought he would be hailed as a brilliant, brave investigative journalist. Then I saw him and Andrew Breitbart on Good Morning America. George Stephanopoulos was extremely hostile, combative, and downright vicious in his attack on both of them - I can't use the word interview as it is completely inappropriate for what went on.
RIP, Mr. Breitbart. I hope and pray that there will be others to take up your cause.

Submitted by Rusty Shackleford on Thu, 03/01/2012 - 1:26pm.
In other news, Fidel Castro and George Soros will outlive our great-grandchildren which is the norm for powerful people who wish to harm others.
At times like this I think about Christians and how they believe there's a god that is actively taking a role in the direction of this world for the good. If you notice, it tends to be people working to make things better that see an untimely end while despots typically have an unreal amount of time to do damage. Generally the times when quote-unquote "evil" is stopped is when another faction of evil puts an end to them. While I wouldn't expect a world to work where "good" people have an immunity badge around their necks protecting them from every ill, I would expect to see some sign that this all-powerful being is not asleep at the wheel. We have a seriously screwed up world, the people attempting to correct the damage are being confronted with an insane amount of hostility from people who largely mock the Bible and its teachings, and then randomless comes down on their lives to make things even more difficult. I never get an adequate answer from Christians who are asked what's the point in believing in a God that you can't count on? What more has to happen before you stop believing? I'm starting to believe there really is a God and that we really should fear him, but not because he's some cosmic power for good...

I've thought about this myself, and here is my two cents.
We are God's children, given free will. He could have made us without free will, and the world would be rainbows and unicorns. It would be the equivalent of having a doll instead of a child when you start a family. When you have a doll, it doesn't do anything wrong. But it also doesn't grow and develop. Real children are messy. They are disobedient, they are sometimes bad, but they also have the ability to surprise and delight us in ways a doll doesn't.
My children are now young adults, I know in my heart they are or have done bad things. I could try to control them, but I have chosen to allow them their mistakes and to face the consequences of those mistakes. I am there to guide them, but not to fix every mistake they make. That is what God our father does. I believe if we die with sin on our souls God will punish us by making us feel the pain we've caused others, before we are rewarded.
I believe there is a God because I wake up every day and see life. I fear him for his rightousness, and I love him for his gifts to me.
Maybe then, it's love that
Submitted by ant on Fri, 03/02/2012 - 2:11am.
Maybe then, it's love that has the good die young and the 'evil' live long lives often. Those who wish no harm on others are rewarded by 'moving up' and those that lead lives that seek to control and hurt others for themselves are extended to give them a chance to see their error and not suffer the 'pain' of death.
Our prayers and sincerest condolences to his family/friends.

There were no earthly power great enough to ever quiet Andrew's restless soul. I admire the ferocious heart of such a mighty warrior, but not the war he fought--a senseless fight which will continue to rage between armies Left and Right, each equally and supremely confident in the righteousness of the cause and the villainy of the foe...a struggle said to be for the salvation of the nation, though in truth a suicide pact unintended by the parties, yielding a few victories along the way, but with no victors in the end.

Second, some here seem questioning of the natural causes explanation, but my brother died suddenly several years ago at age 47, of natural causes. After initially blamed on a massive heart attack it was determined to have been an embolism. Although he was heavy he had not been complaining of any health issues and had not been diagnosed with any life-threatening conditions.
So someone just suddenly passing of natural causes is indeed possible, and no one really can explain it to any degree of satisfaction for those who lose a loved one.

America lost a Patriot today.....and all around cool guy.
Submitted by Founders1791 on Thu, 03/01/2012 - 10:09pm.
Andrew Breitbart was a Patriot of freedom and individual liberty, who fought the righteous fight, and makes our Founding Fathers proud of the progeny they left for the ages.
He knew freedom is not free and must be fought for on a daily basis from Socialist Security Seekers, with their despotic intentions and criminal intent to ‘take’ what they can not achieve in the ‘free markets’ of our society.
The Founders are spinning in their graves at what has become of half the American People (Democrats and RINOs) who have SOLD OUT.
“...They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety...”
--Benjamin Franklin
“...The Constitution only guarantees the American people the right to pursue happiness. You have to catch it yourself…”
-- Benjamin Franklin
Democrats have eroded the essence of American Culture from our Constitution, starting with “their” destruction of "our" individual rights and representation since the 16th, 17th, and 18th Amendments were enacted by them. It has been down hill ever since.
Democrats engage in wholesale disregard for the 9th and 10th Amendments which have resulted in hundreds of thousands of regulations and bureaucrats to enforce "citizen compliance" with those regulations.
Central Planners now control America in direct opposition to Jeffersonian principles and our traditional values. The American Bolshevik Revolution, orchestrated by Socialist Democrats at the turn of the 20th century, has had the desired affect on our culture…dependency, cowardice, and submissiveness.
Democrats SOLD OUT for the ruse that is security and perceived safety. It is corrupt at its core and ignorant of the same mistakes made repeatedly over the last two thousand years.
Andrew Breitbart has been a staunch proponent of exposing and removing from our nation of the cancer that Democrats introduced into our body politic over 100 years ago.

Nearly the end of March, and this is just as shocking and sad as when I first heard it.
Breitbart was a man of conviction and found a way to make a difference in this world. I wish it could have been for longer, but ultimately, God decides the timing and mission.
Agree with his stances/beliefs or not, living life to make a difference (for me, his was to uncover truth)...well, it's a lesson for all of us to contribute what we can while on the planet. And it's not always easy to do; nothing worthwhile is often an easy task.
