Paul Krugman, Sociopath

By Matthew Sheffield | September 11, 2011 | 16:13

Matthew Sheffield's picture

On this solemn commemorative day, we at NewsBusters have made a point of holding our rhetorical fire against liberals as a gesture of respect to those who lost their lives that day and subsequently. There is much we could say and, starting tomorrow, will say.

An exception has to be made for one Paul Krugman, who seems, earlier life, to have been a decent and civilized person. Since he began writing a column for the New York Times, however, Krugman has experienced a veritable descent into madness, principally due to Bush Derangement Syndrome. Today, Krugman decided to proudly expose his neurosis for the entire world to see in an execrable rant on his Times blog. His post is preserved in full below:

September 11, 2011, 8:41 AM
The Years of Shame

Is it just me, or are the 9/11 commemorations oddly subdued?

Actually, I don’t think it’s me, and it’s not really that odd. What happened after 9/11 — and I think even people on the right know this, whether they admit it or not — was deeply shameful. Te [sic] atrocity should have been a unifying event, but instead it became a wedge issue. Fake heroes like Bernie Kerik, Rudy Giuliani, and, yes, George W. Bush raced to cash in on the horror. And then the attack was used to justify an unrelated war the neocons wanted to fight, for all the wrong reasons.

A lot of other people behaved badly. How many of our professional pundits — people who should have understood very well what was happening — took the easy way out, turning a blind eye to the corruption and lending their support to the hijacking of the atrocity?

The memory of 9/11 has been irrevocably poisoned; it has become an occasion for shame. And in its heart, the nation knows it.

I’m not going to allow comments on this post, for obvious reasons.

Please note the timestamp on this posting: September 11, 2011, 8:41 AM.

That means Krugman woke up on the tenth anniversary of the largest attack on this nation's homeland and decided to make an attack on three men forever linked to that moment, simply because he doesn't like them. Imagine if a New York Times columnist had done that during World War II on Pearl Harbor Day. Absolutely sickening.

Of course, one ought not be surprised to see such contemptible rhetoric from Krugman given his history of making numerous preposterous and hateful statements.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Having no respect for the dead—all 2,977 of them—is hardly the only sin evinced by Krugman today, though. His posting makes no attempt to make an argument and he didn't seem to even bother spell-checking it.

Cowardice is another. It takes a special kind of sociopath to make a hateful remark and then run away when sane people choose to make a response. Why else would he have disabled comments on his post?

It’s possible that Krugman’s rant was prompted purely by a venal desire to gin up hits for the pitiful collection of ravings otherwise known as his blog, “The Conscience of a Liberal.” Such types of shameless sociopaths do exist after all.

That can’t be the answer, though. Even shameless self-promoters are aware that going too far can harm their future ability to shill. Krugman’s rant came from something deeper and far darker than that.

We saw this facet of his personality most recently in January of this year when Krugman penned a column for the Times reacting to the shooting of Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords which was remarkably similar to the reaction of Fred Phelps, the deranged leader of the Westboro Baptist cult.

Both men immediately flew into apoplexy, eager to blame her near-death on Americans who dare to disagree with them. Both misquoted and lied about the actions and rhetoric of their enemies and then said they were not surprised that Giffords had been shot because of the societal environment created by said enemies.

As a militant liberal and atheist, Krugman didn’t blame the actions of Jared Loughner on the wrath of a God angered at the continued non-imprisonment of gays, instead he blamed Loughner’s actions on the “growing potential for violence” supposedly created by conservatives. Both, however, saw the attack as the logical consequent of a society that had been led horribly awry by evildoers who just won’t listen to the truth. Former Alaska governor Sarah Palin was named by both men as one such individual. Krugman threw in GOP presidential candidate Michele Bachmann for good measure. Never mind that neither Palin nor Bachmann had anything at all to do with Loughner's rampage.

In using the very day during which we commemorate those who died to smear those he hates, Krugman has completed his embrace of Westboro Baptist liberalism, particularly with his utter inability to perceive the emotions of others. Does he really expect commemorations of the murder of thousands of innocent people to be anything other than “oddly subdued?”

When it comes to “hijacking of the atrocity” of September 11th, Paul Krugman has provided a far better example of the term than anyone else. The New York Times ought to be ashamed of itself for allowing Krugman’s vile rant to appear on its website on the very day the city it purports to serve is mourning the worst event in its history. What a shame it is that America’s most famous newspaper has become an enabler of a man in the throes of a mental breakdown.

Update 19:45. Ace of Spades has a superb essay about Krugman and other liberals who, instead of hating Al Qaeda, hate conservatives:

Those of us not smitten with this Only Hate Hate Itself dodge can admit we hate. We may not be proud of it, and may question ourselves when we give license to it, but we can in fact admit this ugly emotion lives in our hearts.

And we can admit then that we do in fact hate the murderers who killed 2,996 [sic] on 11 September 2001, and we hate their allies, and we hate those who dance in the street at the thoughts of men on fire plummeting a quarter mile through the air to their deaths.

But to the bien pensants, this won't due. This sort of hatred is base, and crude, and obvious; lower working class, is what they would really call it, if they had the supposed courage Kathleen Parker imagines they do in speaking uncomfortable truth. Not Quite Our Class, Dear, as the old saying goes, lacking in manners and savoir faire (knowing how to "do," and by "do," we mean comport oneself with the expected manners and opinions of the privileged class).

And what does a bien pensant in good standing about these these uncultured yobbos who feel no twinge of class-inculcated shame in hating mass-murderers?

Why, you hate them, of course. For what else can a good bien pensant, who has purged all hate from his heart by simple act of subscribing to Mother Jones, do when confronted with some benighted hatred, but to pour enlightened hatred on it?

We have never really been arguing about whether we should go to war, or whether we should hate. The only contention of these past 10 years has been whom we should go to war with, and whom we ought to hate.

Read the whole thing. It is excellent.

He really doesn't get the irony of his comments, he complains that it should be a unifying event, but he's the one sewing division. Just because elected leaders are making speeches doesn't mean they're hijacking the event for politics, any more than FDR hijacked the occasion of Pearl Harbor.

In addition to being schmuck, Krugman misses the point

Submitted by Galvanic on Mon, 09/12/2011 - 8:02am.

When did Bush and Giuilani ever get praised as "heroes" as Krugman labels them? They did get credit for their strong leadership in the time of crisis, but I don't recall anyone calling them heroes, so Krugman's charge that they are "fake heroes" doesn't wash.

Every American knows who the real 9/11 heroes were and are, and would never equate Bush and Giuliani with the them.

Obviously Krugman can't come to terms with his irrelevancy. It seems that people in this country, despite everything the MSM tried to do to discredit the man, still miss George Bush. I certainly wasn't a fan but I recognize that he was a good man. My husband and I watched the Flight 93 speech yesterday AM and came to the agreement that we would have no problem serving again with him as CIC.

Likely Krugman spent the day hawking over blogs to see what his seeds of hate had sown - trying to derive some sense of satisfaction and regain some shred of that feeling of importance or relevance from his actions. While the majority of rest of the country likely spent a short time in solemn reflection and then moved on into their day to appreciate their family and count their blessings. I know I did. I'll give the man the one thing I am sure he can't stand. Pity.

He was right about one thing. In the picture that he showed of Bush, Guiliani, a fireman and Chuck Schumer there was one coward and fake hero there. The smiling moron Chuck Schumer. Krugman must have missed the battle for Clinton and Gore to get to the site of 9/11 before Bush. Odd Clinton would even have the gall to go to the site since he and his ilk like Schumer are totally responsible for 9/11.

The little tweed-jacketed, faculty-lounge elite has been livid and rabies-filled ever since his beloved Keynesian thought was laughably rebuffed. You don't mock and laugh at a tweed-jacketed faculty-lounge elite, so Paul is doing the only thing he can: He's lashing out at everyone and everything. He's rabies-filled.

Indeed, I quite like seeing him this way. The angrier and rage-filled this bearded man-child gets, the more we realize that 'his way' is failing. And he knows it's failing. Years of columns that shout, "The stimulus wasn't BIG enough!", have taken their toll.

DSS should check on the welfare of his family and pets; Paul might be lashing at them.

Of course, he didn't allow comments along with his little leftist diatribe. He'll probably shout from some mountaintop, "See! No one disagrees with me!!"

Those who want to bring down nations and rake off the wealth of the people need nefarious spokesmen who lie plausibly to John Q Public. That is the role Paul Krugman plays for the NYT. It isn't just that Kluelessman is angry at the leaders during 9/11. Liberals used the response to 9/11 as a wedge issue to gain power. They achieved their goal beyond their hopes and dreams with a Liberal President and a veto proof Liberal Congress. But it has all blown up in their face and they are staring at defeat in the next election and they are helpless to do anything about it because their ideas do not work. So the Liberals are like angry cornered animals. They are striking out wildly.

Liberalism everywhere around the globe is on the ropes. Our current recession could be ended but Liberals want to save Liberalism more than turning the economy loose out of their domination. We used to talk about the old Soviet Union as being a bland grey society. That was because the 'leaders' would only allow enough enterprise as their control would allow. That's obama's America.

With rumors of Bernanke retiring, this essay from Carmen Ghia has probably made him a ballet slipper in for the job. But seriously folks the tragedy of 10 years ago should be in remembering the lost lives and what we lost as a nation on that day and February 26 1993 and the Cole and the numerous terrorist attacks that we as a nation have withstood. Lets also remember our brave men and women in uniform in Iraq and Afghanistan and those who were wounded or gave the ultimate sacrifice so that this turd could write the venomous crap that he writes. They still believe that this a country worth fighting for . When I see these fine young men and women coming home or on the tube with the limited positive coverage they get, I feel proud. You called it a tragedy, and that's a very liberal term to use.  This is not a drama IE a dramatic act, this is a heinous act of crime against humanity by a barbaric cult called Islam.

Call it anything else at all, but never a tragedy.

That word's been misused like crazy.

While I will cede to you the correct use of the word tragedy "Note : In common usage, disasters of many kinds are called tragedies." If you think I am diminishing the events of that day or the previous attacks on this country e.g. 2/26/93 or the Cole attack because of a mis used word in your opinion, then your problems run much deeper, if you didn't grasp my meaning. I know it was a brutal attack on this country by a barbaric cult, and I know it on a personal level in 2 of those 3 examples cited. If you want to be a word Nazi go ahead, but I think the majority of the people who read what I wrote understood my meaning.

Just to let you know "Don't Let the Bastards Grind You Down" also happens to be the motto of the USS Tunny SSN 682 which was the Fast Attack sub I served on. That sub is sadly no more and like all retired and decommisioned subs has probably been turned into razor blades.

The Latin for this motto is "Illegitimi Non Carborundum".

the Krugster has proven just the oposite of what he speaks - no matter what the subject, no matter what the 'smarts' level of the writer, this country allows the speech of an idiot to be heard, no matter that that speech may be vile and moronic, we let those who are stupid, to be just that.

The rest of us can take note that we can, be free to vent our anger at this type of stupidity and show the better side of discourse.

Reading what has been posted here, we can be proud that we are allowed this freedom, not chained or muzzeled by our government, as others are, and that we can then compare our own moral base against someone as dumb as the Krugster.

My son just showed this to me. My impressions of Krugman:

Submitted by drsamherman on Sun, 09/11/2011 - 6:18pm.

He has a mixed grab-bag of Axis II Cluster B personality disorder symptoms. Cluster B includes such personality disorders as histrionic, narcissistic, antisocial and borderline. There are some common symptoms within the cluster, and normally a diagnosis is made on the cluster with emphasis placed on the more dominant symptoms, for example, a patient would be diagnosed as having "borderline personality disorder with heavy histrionic features". With cluster B symptoms (not treatable by drugs), we see a heavy amount of mood disorder overlays, such as depression/anxiety (Axis I = treatable by drugs).

With Paul, his writings make him seem increasingly depressed. Hard to tell if it is acute, episodic or chronic. I lean more towards the chronic side, because he has been petulant and moody to the point where none of his writings reflect a happiness in anything. Anhedonic features are really difficult to treat, largely because anywhere you go with the patient makes it difficult to assess if we are making progress or not. If nothing makes them happy, we don't know if the treatment for depression is working. Similarly, in Paul I see a very, very heavy overlay of cluster B, primarily towards a 50/50 of histrionic and narcissistic features. We have discussed narcissism before, but in general Paul's writings indicates a frustration with those who believe other than he does to the point where his rhetoric seems to the extreme. His histrionic features are rather interesting, for example he seems to believe his association with Obama is more politically close that it might otherwise be and his narcissism feeds into a parallel of rejection. Another part of his histrionic features is his acute reaction to anyone who disagrees with him--a common feature of narcissism and histrionics. There is also an overlay of the borderline features in him, e.g. impulsive statements, inappropriate criticism and inappropriate anger at the rejection of his ideas. Again, all of these cluster B signs tend to blend into one another with commonality.

His column is definitely a sign of whatever stress he puts himself through. The entire world of cluster B is self-focus with little or no regard for others, thus also a very sociopathically-oriented club that one would not really want to join. I do hope he is seeing a good psychiatrist, because his column is a cry for help. Fast.

Back to the 'cue!

An obvious reason-

Submitted by Ashrak on Sun, 09/11/2011 - 6:49pm.

Osama Bin Laden made clear in his 1996 and 1998 open declarations of war upon the people of these united States that Iraq was central to his complaints.

Krugman can tout the bogus foolishness of "unrelated" all he wants to, but then that is one obvious reason why he disallowed any responses directly to his nonsense post that attempts to rewrite history.

Kurgman's idol, Bill Clinton, imposed, unilaterally, some manufactured, indeed contrived, policy of containment. He got the U.N. to support that nonsense by offering that body control, influence and profit, of the scandalous Oil For Food program. Sanctions, claimed by the left to be so humane, showed themselves to be the horror that they are and they became central to Bin Laden's rantings.

Paul Krugman, you are a traitor of the highest order because not only do you aim to harm what is your own country, you lie endlessly to facilitate your treasonous musings. If you want to see who divided this nation after 9-11, look in the mirror, for there is the guilty party staring you right in the face.

Oh wait, blood sucking vampires have no reflection, do they?......................

I've always heard what a tough bunch New Yorkers are, so let's see some of you stand up and "educate" Mr. Krugman.  Surely not all of you are pansy assed liberals.  There are bound to be a few thousand conservative patriots somewhere in that city who will make an effort to run into this little fascist bastard on the street and voice your displeasure with his work.

So come on New York! Grow a set and handle this, or do some of us good old boy, redneck, racist, bigot, homophobe, sons of bitches (references provided by the DNC and other liberal organizations) have to come up there and do it for you?

Maybe Dr. Herman has it write as a psychiatric disorder , but did that little fact compensate for the Hitlers, Stalins, Mao's and OBL's of the world? This is an adult man who insults the memory of the dead on the day they are to be memorialized? Someone else stated it better but where is the accountability of the NYT' s in all this. Dunning-Kruger effect describes the handicap shared by so many liberals, most notably Obama. It describes Obama's behavior more fully than by just saying, "Oh, well, he's a narcissist."

A conclusion is elusive, however. What comes first -- the disability itself or embracing the liberal ideology?

Paul Krugman and that photo

Submitted by Slyrr on Sun, 09/11/2011 - 11:59pm.

Paul Krugman and that photo depict modern Liberal Democrats so perfectly it's scary.

They sit in their little liberal enclaves, sipping champagne, nibbling at caviar bon-bons, wearing white gloves so they don't actually have to touch anything, probably with top hats on their heads and wearing monocles, and smoking through those little cigarette holders. And sniffing in fruity little voices about how ashamed they are to live in the country that gave them all their wealth and freedoms, and how the country would be perfect if they could just exterminate anyone who wasn't just like them.

If Krugman thinks that Iran and Afghanistan are so great, then we should stuff him in a crate and mail him to Tora-bora, and let him try peddling his bilge there.

You are a bloody liar, yours is the stake the fire,
You say you are innocent, but you be caught and spent
And now you pay the price, for avarice, your vice
Intrigue your sole desire, you sold your wife, your child
You sell your oldest friends, you sold your countrymen
And yet we know your name, traitor, traitor

And now your face is shown, and so your fate is known,
We have discovered you, we have uncovered you,
You say you were led astray, fall on your knees and pray,
Pity is not for you, we'll make things hot for you,
Our hearts we make to harden, for you there is no pardon,
For you the spike awaits, upon the traitors gate,
And crows will eat your eyes, traitor, traitor

Delight we find in you, as we are binding you,
You look in vain for friends, you only find revenge
We give you blood and steel, we break you on the wheel
The ones you hope to sell, will send you straight to hell,
As we dismember you, we shall remember you,
You are abomination, you that betray the nation

Bill the Scold strikes again

Submitted by Phryj1 on Thu, 09/15/2011 - 11:02pm.

Free speech doesn't mean you can't be criticized for making partisan false accusations and politicizing the commemoration of a tragic event to attack those you disagree with. Criticism is not infringement.

Also, you seem to be saying criticism of speech isn't in and of itself protected free speech. That noise you just heard was your argument imploding.

Besides, we'd never want to infringe on Krugman's right to make a fool of himself every time he opens his mouth or puts pen to paper. It's fun to watch most of the time.

Progressives seem to be completely averse to facts and logic. Apparently, reality has a conservative bias.
