Video: Newt Gingrich Goes After Debate Moderator John Harris for Biased Questioning
By Matthew Sheffield | September 07, 2011 | 22:25
For reasons that are still inexplicable, the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Library agreed to partner up with NBC News, parent organization of the uber-left-wing network MSNBC to televise tonight's Republican presidential debate. While NBC representative Brian Williams had more than his share of sneering biased questions, it was Williams's co-moderator, Politico editor John Harris, who laid on the snark in his attempts to bait and attack the candidates.
Such unbalanced questioning is par-for-the-course for Republicans competing at the national level. More often than not, they take it in stride. Tonight, though, Newt Gingrich was having none of it as he went full-on after Harris's attempts to insert Gingrich into a non-existent debate about an individual mandate to purchase insurance at the national level that Republicans simply are not having. Video and transcript follow.
"Well, I’m frankly not interested in your effort to get Republicans fighting each other," Gingrich retorted.
Later on, he examined more closely what Harris was trying to do by ginning up a false dichotomy between the candidates on the individiual mandate:
"I for one, and I hope all of my friends up here, going to repudiate every effort of the news media to get Republicans to fight each other to protect Barack Obama who deserves to be defeated. And all of us are committed as a team, whoever the nominee is, we are all for defeating Barack Obama."
Here's the video of the exchange between Gingrich and Harris:
The transcript:
JOHN HARRIS: Speaker Gingrich, it sounds like we have a genuine philosophical disagreement. In Massachusetts, a mandate, almost no uninsured—in Texas, a more limited approach, about a quarter uninsured. Who’s got the better end of this argument?
NEWT GINGRICH: Well, I’m frankly not interested in your effort to get Republicans fighting each other.
(Harris laughs, audience applauds)
GINGRICH: The fact is—
HARRIS: Speaker Gingrich, we’ve got—
GINGRICH: The fact is—
HARRIS: We’ve got—
GINGRICH: No, no we don’t—
HARRIS: We’ve got a choice between the individual mandate or not. Anyway, go ahead.
GINGRICH: You’d have, you would like to puff this up into some giant thing. The fact is, every person up here understands Obamacare is a disaster. It is a disaster procedurally. It was rammed through after they lost Teddy Kennedy’s seat in Massachusetts. It was written badly, it was never reconciled. It can’t be implemented. It is killing this economy.
And if this president had any concern for working Americans, he’d walk in Thursday night and ask us to repeal it because it’s a monstrosity. Every person up here agrees with that.
(Audience applauds)
And let me just say-- since I still have a little time left, let me just say—
HARRIS: Sure.
GINGRICH: I for one, and I hope all of my friends up here, going to repudiate every effort of the news media to get Republicans to fight each other to protect Barack Obama who deserves to be defeated. And all of us are committed as a team, whoever the nominee is, we are all for defeating Barack Obama.
This was a rare moment in Republican political history that shouldn't be nearly so rare. In the 2012 campaign, the biggest opponent whoever the Republican nominee will face is the nation's rabidly left-wing media elite. Kudos to Gingrich for pointing this out.
Conservative candidates across the country should follow suit and not fear going after the media when they try to attack Republicans and carry water for Democrats instead of playing it down the middle as they proclaim to.

Newt just keeps debating and reminding the country that he beat his way up from minority leader to Speaker of the House and that he is the only Speaker with a .400 batting average for a year. His personal problems may always keep him from being elected to the big chair but in a pinch he is the one man who could do the job well until the College Professor in him reasserts itself.

A perfect example was when that dirt bag Democrat Chris Wallace asked Bachmann if she was a flake. I was livid when he asked that question yet Bachmann, although taken aback by that stupid disrespectful question, answered it with class, something Wallace is lacking.
Although I don't believe either Michelle Bachmann or Newt Gingrich can win the nomination (I support Perry or Romney), I can see both Bachmann and Gingrich as key members of the new Republican administration.

While I am not a fan of Gingrich, he is an intellectual who is firm in his convictions, skilled in arguing issues, and thrives on debate.
He was quick to sense what was going on, and fired back at Harris with clarity and punch.
He probably realizes that he's got little chance of winning the nomination, but he is an experienced campaigner and he knows that the key to his party's success is unity of purpose.
Had the debate concluded without Gingrich's charge, the MSM would've had a field day snipping quotes out of context and suggesting that the GOP is at war with itself.

Bill Hemmer just interviewed Chris Wallace about last night's debate, and Newt's "attack" on the media.
It was very obvious Wallace is still pouting about his exchange w/Newt at the last debate....he was whining, and making disparaging remarks, like "it's kind of sad", "it's supposed to be a debate". I've lost huge respect for Wallace in the last month (and that process actually began when he kept shagging his wife's stupid Soup book incessantly).
I hope Newt stays in this as long as he can for a couple of reasons. He raises the level of the debate, as he is the debate king. And he's keeping the media in the room honest. All of the rest of the candidates were able to feed off Newt's determined attack on liberal stupidity, except for Ron Paul, who was easily baited into jumping feet first into the liberal trap.

and -yep, I'll say it again- Newt has taken on a role as a candidate. He knows he won't win the nomination (and he shouldn't) but he is the consummate team player for the GOP. He will say things so the others won't. He's twice called out moderators -and rightly so- in these debates and it quickly turned that Harris tool around. Newt is an attack dog but unlike the current administration's attack dog, Newt isn't the proven gaffe-master. He's a quick wit, extremely knowledgeable and obviously well prepared. Yep, Newt as VP crossed my mind too, last night. Ever since he got into the race, I have fantasized about possible Newt/Barry debates. Newt/Joey debates would be the next comedy sensation on TV!
I know he has "baggage", but, darn! He has ideas, and with his experience in Congress, would know how to implement them. Loved his explanation about how the Reagan amnesty was "supposed" to have worked. I don't think that was a shining moment for Reagan, but, then, it was not implemented the way he wanted it to be.
Thought his justification for DHS was short, sweet and powerful. The moderators didn't let him lay out his jobs plan, which he first proposed back in MAY!
I will NOT let the media select my candidate (they have already decided its Romney/Perry, if they can't push Huntsman on us. Ron Paul is just good for a chuckle). Come on, Newt!

I hope the other candidates watched and learned from Newt. Until Republicans treat 'journalists' for the democrat operatives that they are they will always be treated unfairly. The 'journalists' have to be trained to be afraid to risk totally biased questions or comments so that they are not themselves drug into the spotlight for a public spanking.
Newt will occupy an interesting role.

At this point, his nomination is highly unlikely. That allows him extreme latitude to go after the press with bared fangs and sharpened claws, no holds barred. The press has assumed the role of enforcer to the Democrat mob, and now beat cop Newt can go after them without limits. If he sustains and chooses this path, it allows him the ultimate freedom of having no personal commitments to be politically correct, and he can mano-a-mano with such scum as Tingles, BriWi, Stepinpoo and all of the other DNC propagandists/apologists in the media. He can draw the political fire to advance the Republican candidate. Interesting tactic.
Honestly, I didn't watch the debate because it was on MSNBC. I would rather have my eyes poked out than to add even a +1 to their ratings. Having idiots like John F. Harris and BriWi moderate such a debate is too painful.

Newt doesn't have a snowball's chance of winning the GOP nomination. And apparently, he seems to accept this fact, based on the way he's getting in his licks on the MSM.
A serious candidate would probably not go after a debate moderator, regardless of how much the moderator deserved it. While it's highly entertaining, in the end it appears a bit un-presidential. If you agree to a debate forum with moderators from NBC and Politico, you should expect that the "questions" will be biased.
Of course, in the end you have to appreciate Newt's media savvy. A live debate telecast is one of the few events where a favorite MSM punching bag (like Newt) can publicly embarrass the network's golden boys.....on their own network.....in front of millions of viewers. And unlike a taped speech or interview, it can't be edited out.

I couldn't agree more. The only reason the media is so bold is because they've gone decades without paying a price for their bias.
Newt is wise to drag their hidden agenda out into the light because if they can't hide behind their "impartial referee" title, they have no credibility at all.
If each and every candidate would expose them whenever they shill for their own team, they would be less willing to stick their necks out. The media is great at playing offense, but when someone forces them to defend, they usually look like the uninformed hacks that they are. John Harris knows that he is no match for Newt in an intellectual exchange and a direct confrontation from Newt was probably his worst nightmare. Now that he's been slapped down, I suspect he'll be a lot more cautious in the future.
I've been critical of Newt in the past, but he knows exactly what he's doing here and it's something that should have happened long ago.

On a posting some months back I stated flatly that Newt is the guy, and his performance here is only one very tiny reason why.
He is exceptionally articulate, could never lose a genuine debate with any democrat and, proving his open-mindedness, has repudiated his original take on global warming (which he now recognizes as false).
I had the great privilege of getting his autograph (and that of his charming wife Callista) a few days ago at Chicago's Taste of Polonia festival and rank those autographs with others I have which include Alan Shepard, Robert Bork, George Lucas, Jim Lovell, Gene Cernan and David Prowse (Darth Vader).

If the purpose of these pre-primary debates is to educate Republican voters about their choices in candidates, wouldn't the proper questioning from the "moderators" be chosen and framed in a way that fed into what Republicans are interested in knowing? Wouldn't this preclude attacking them from the Left - a position than very few in the GOP would want to hear? No, these "moderators" are already trying to turn these supposedly party debates in the kind that will be used in the general election campaign. I'm surprised that NBC didn't suggest putting Obama on the stage with the others so he could answer soft ball questions and help NBC attack the Republicans.

This was a blue ribbon winning moment from Newt. Had me cheering like he hit a grand slam. He also had two other candidates agreeing with him, which I thought made Newt look like an elder statesman instead of an equal, something you don't want to do for your opponent.
I wanted to search a transcript of the debate but am unable to find one, the reason because I believe right after Newt called for fellow debaters to not attack one another as the moderators wanted, that Cain went immediately on attack mode. I like Cain but was a bit shocked he did this immediately after Newt's words. So was some of the audience by their audible reaction.
I did manage to locate the exchange on this video beginning at the 27:47 mark. Immediately after Newt's glorious rebuke of the Obama watert hauling moderator, Cain takes a shot at Romney for RomneyCare. I don't blame him but the timing following Newt's comments seems a poor choice.
For some reason, the NYTimes published transcript does not appear to include this Newt-Harris exchange. In fact, my cursory examination shows the Bachmann exchange immediately preceeding Newts bristling is not included in this so-called transcripts. Would that be due to the NYTimes' motto "All the news (we deem) fit to print"? [italicized mine] This is henious censorship by both Roll Call and the NYTlimes who purports to be all about freedom of speech, especially those entities who were so self-righteous and indignant about the accusing editing hijinx of Shirley Sherrod's racism by Andrew Breitbart. The dirty tricks Left is in full regalia here.

PJMedia seems to have the full transcript broken up into 4 parts. 1 2 3 4.

I checked several transcripts--all of which omitted the Harris/Gingrich exchange--until I located a partial transcript at PJMedia which was a verbatim publication of the first part of the debate. It did include the relevant Gingrich fireworks however.

Thanks katainkent and Jer.
Any ideas why Roll Call would censor and the NYTimes would publish it?

Newt throws himself on the media bias grenade once again. It will cost further points in his bid for the Presidency but I think he's had enough experience to realize that he's pretty much "dunfer" and I am not certain he cares. Meanwhile, I hope he'll keep holding out the lightning rod as long as he can.
I get the impression Mr Newt

I get the impression Mr Newt is doing this for posterity. After all, each exchange he has with the media further cements his reputation. He is showing the rest of them on the dias how to do this, and do this well.

liberal bias for factual bias. Since when should media play the middle or the left or right at all? They should play the role of devils advocate in pursuit of actual truth on actual issues in the real world and not cheerleaders for their side. Direct questions about policy in specific are not liberal. Nor is it liberal to point out relevant facts that inform the question or answer.
Asking a presidential hopeful who has said that they support tax cuts and balanced budgets how and what they will cut is not liberal, it is informational. It sounded to me like the questions were biased to helping Americans better understand realities.
