Rally for 'Sanity' Had Its Share of Hatred

By Matthew Sheffield | October 30, 2010 | 20:02

Matthew Sheffield's picture

Milling around the Jon Stewart/Stephen Colbert rally today, I couldn't quite figure out the point. The acoustics were so bad also that you could barely hear anything unless you were right by the stage. Straining here and there, I was able to catch a smattering of dialogue but Colbert and Stewart really could not be heard during most of the time in the various locations I was at. Not being able to hear anything didn't seem to bother most of the attendees however, most of whom were wandering around looking at many of the funny (and attempted funny) signs.

Not all of the signs were trying to be funny, however. Most of the ire of the angry demonstrators seemed to be directed against Glenn Beck and Fox News. There were also a few anti-Republican signs as well, including at least one of Republican politicians Sarah Palin, John Boehner, and Eric Cantor with Adolph Hitler mustaches alongside conservative talk show hosts Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh.

I took several shots of the rally, see them below or view them fullscreen here.

Exit question for members of the media: Will you eagerly report about a few hateful signs at the liberal "Sanity" rally like you did for Tea Party rallies?

Restoring Sanity Was A Joke and So Is Obama!

Submitted by im41 on Sat, 10/30/2010 - 8:20pm.

While millions of -- out of work -- Americans were wondering how they are going to pay their bills, feed their families, get to work, or where they are going to stay the night, Obama was pinning his political "hopes" on these two jackasses.

Jumping around as Captain America, stars and stripes and all, implying that they were sane and all that came before--the sponteneous tea parties, Beck, and so on--were not. Uh, OK...you get to be the coolest EVAH...now back to reality. And now Stewart can never even be a fake newsman because he is not a newsman of any sort--he is an operative.

I was there today

Submitted by melman11 on Sat, 10/30/2010 - 8:32pm.

I posted a quick summary under the Open Thread today.  But here are some observations:

-When I arrived, it seemed like the more "interesting" signs were displayed on the sides.  Lots of anti-Fox News stuff.  Scrolling through the posted photos, I don't recall seeing those.  On the walk to the Mall, people were selling T-Shirts saying "I make Glenn Beck cry".  That's the only very obvious Beck reference I can remember seeing.

-I finally got settled in the middle-to-back area and the crowd was fine.  I kept a low profile though.

-I mostly just people-watched and looked at the signs.  Some signs were good.  Others were bad.  Most of the signs had a sarcastic tone.

-There was very little diversity.  I'll be interested to see how the media tries to explain that.

I've said this before here on

Submitted by killa37 on Sat, 10/30/2010 - 8:43pm.

I've said this before here on NB.....and I'll say it again. I defy anyone to watch documentaries of the rise of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party and not be struck by the similiarities to the 'rise of Boy Blunder' and the current Democrat Party and Federal Government.........

The main difference that I can tell was that Hitler was 'legitimate'  - in that he actually worked his way up and paid some serious dues along the way, before he finally got his power. He was also a very staunch supporter of German 'greatness' and had severe national pride........

Boy Barry has been coddled his whole life, and has no experience to back up the position he's in now - much less any other position that he might hold. Hell, I'll bet the guy was a crappy 'community agitator'!!! And, as he proves on a daily basis, he is very anti-American and is trying as hard as he can to 'cut our country down to size'...................

I think you are appropriately and suitably well 'self named'.  I have often thought about the similarities between the rise of Hitler and the rise of Obama.  The big difference so far being, America is no longer under Obama's spell.  I think we wised up fairly early on, maybe around the time he held his beer summit after wrongly condemning a police officer doing his job.  I never was fooled by the guy after I read and heard just a little bit about him and his parents, especially, his mother, so I held my nose and voted for McCain, but some awfully embarrassed people are finally waking up to what they foolishly did on election day 2008.

How about these similarities?

Submitted by TheHistorian on Sun, 10/31/2010 - 2:26pm.

Hitler came to power with the assistance of his Brownshirts.  Obama was helped in his election by HIS brownshirts, namely the Black Panther Party, union thugs, ...

Hitler had his SS.  Obama wants an internal security force that is equivalent to the military.

Hitler was half Jewish and hated Jews; Obama is half white and hates whites (e.g.comments about the grandmother who raised him).  Beck's comment about him not being racist by being anti-colonialist also bears this out.

So, Jer, there are some examples on how he resembles Hitler.  I would have to research it more to give you more, and frankly I am not willing to waste my time. I am sure that someone else can give you examples of how he is like Mao Zedong, Stalin, or other tyrants if they want to bother trying.  The bigger point is that he resembles Hitler a heck of a lot more that GWB.

However, my opinion is that he and his are closer to the Weimar Republic the way he is running our currency, economy, and country into the ground.  Maybe a cross between the Weimar and FDR with some Wilson thrown in?

Submitted by BD on Sun, 10/31/2010 - 12:41pm.

Obama's only hope is dependant on two phases.

1.)  The conservatives who are swept into office Tuesday are successful in readically reducing his stimulous spending, lower marginal and corporate tax rates and destroy Obama care in 2011.

2.)  Then in early 2012 when the economy booms the morons on the left and those in the media are easily convinced that it was his foolish "Stimulous spending" that was the cause of the economic recovery.

Not only are you the author of the funniest post in the history of Newsbusters, the site's premier researcher and trollbuster, but you just demonstrated your keen eye for historical and political truths unburdened by ideological influences.

I will concede to a couple of areas of similarity between Obama and Hitler:  They both assumed power during a time of economic crises within their respective countries and both enacted programs providing for massive government spending in an effort to ameliorate the severity of those conditions.  [Hitler's spending was directed largely toward German rearmament, whereas Obama's was non-military in purpose.]  Hitler was reasonably successful in reinvigorating the German economy, whereas, thus far at least, Obama has not enjoyed similar successes--an understatement indeed.

The other point of possible similarity is the fact that each had a messianic appeal which aided in the political advancement of both men--although in Obama's case, much of that appeal has already been seriously eroded.  On the other hand, the 'Hitler as Messiah' phenomenon extended over a much longer period--perhaps fifteen years.

Any other similarities are trivial and inconsequential, in my opinion.  And, frankly, several of the "alleged" points of historical convergance between the two are not just nutty, but are outrageous slanders.

Agreed-- "O" and "H" could not be more dissimilar in their upbringing and early careers-- and "O" can hardly be accused of promoting national pride-- but there are a few disturbing similarities of each's administrations-- the most notable to me is the "czar" system that has been implemented to drive national policy on key issues such as environment, science etc in which they have literally created an "enemies of the state" list of those who disagree with the basis of their positions-- "sustainability" for one alarming example-- as if THEY get to decide what's considered "sustainable" and then ram that down everyone's throats without be contested in a constitutionally  guaranteed process-- it is their disdain by them for that process that sets off alarms to which some cry the "H" word as a result--

Do you have any "after" pics?  Just wondering how much of a mess they left behind.

And honestly, so many liberals on TV are so nasty and angry all the time.  Even if this whole crowd was white liberals, I think it probably did them good to get some fresh air and smile together.

So my big question, from the beginning, has been 'who needs to have their sanity restored'??? Was is all of these libs........however many there were??? Are they admitting that they've been having sanity problems??? Most of the people I know HAVE their sanity, and they wouldn't need to go to some dopey event presented by a couple of moronic so-called-comedians who are basically lightweights in any field except for their status with the MSM and a bunch of clueless followers..................

Eric Cantor is Jewish

Submitted by laree on Sat, 10/30/2010 - 10:37pm.

Eric Cantor is Jewish, they drew a Hitler mustache on his picture, at a Rally being  hosted by a Jewish man, Jon Stewart...Non of these people  think not one little tiny bit, they aren't reasonable, they are ignorant. And not all that classy.

I fast forwarded through most of the silliness, but I did like Jon Stewart's speech at the end (followed by Tony Bennett!).

I watched quite a bit of

Submitted by Liberallies on Sat, 10/30/2010 - 10:54pm.

I watched quite a bit of this. I do not know why, nothing better to do on a Saturday afternoon.

It was boring, weird, it lacked humor, granted I have never found these two clowns humerous. The crowd was not very enthusiatic. Yes, they applauded, cheered, but it was FAR from a pep-rally type of thing.

While I watched I was expecting something more, more upbeat, more enthusiam.

I just saw two morons who easily persuaded a crowd of mostly 20 to 35 poorly informed white Americans to do, say and participate in a rally of nothing.

After watching what I watched, I felt ashamed of being an American. I turned to my wife and asked her, "did I give up my Venezuelan citizenship and become an American for this type of garbage?!" I am glad, however, that the crowd was merely 150,000 compared to Glen Beck's 500,000.

May God truly help America if the current 20 to 35 year olds do not wise up, mature and become better educated.

I think it was Einstein or one of our Founding Fathers who said the only thing that seperates a dictatorship from a democracy is one generation! and the coming generation that is starting to get into positions of power terrifies me. Not so much because they are evil, but rather due to their level of ignorance about pretty much anything, history, religion, science, math, literature, etc, etc, etc!

I watched most of this rally

Submitted by Chris M-G on Sun, 10/31/2010 - 9:45am.

I watched most of this rally (missed the first hour or so) because I can't talk about it with any clout unless I've seen it. The same is not likely true about most of the excoriating that went to Beck.

But you're right- this country is destroying itself from within by ignoring the truth of the matter (in more ways than one) and there's really not much we can do about it until the crap hits the fan and the people have no choice but to wise up. Pray that it happens soon and quickly so that we can recover and live our lives as true Americans should- with no fear of subversion by any entity or currency, "foreign or domestic."

Beck's Crowd "Primarily White", Colbert/Stewart will be...

Submitted by West Coast Minority on Sun, 10/31/2010 - 3:05am.

Not one journalist or media outlet will characterize the Sanity Rally crowd as mostly white. Why did they say that for Beck's crowd? They of course were implying that the crowd that follows Beck is racist.

The outrageous bias that dominates the media is really getting to me.

No surprise that the irony of some of the signs went over the head of the Newsbusters people. The sign with the hitler moustaches with "Afraid yet?" was probably supposed to be an ironic sign for the fear part of the rally. There were also many other signs that made fun of Hitler posters. One I really liked was a picture of Hitler without his moustache.
