'I've Got a Bracelet, Too'

Photo of Matthew Sheffield.

In recent memory, every presidential debate eventually distills down into a few catchphrases. Al Gore became known for his sighs and love of lockboxes. John Kerry actually served in Vietnam. Dan Quayle was no Jack Kennedy.

Barack Obama has a bracelet, too.

That inartful comeback will likely filter out through the political ether in the days ahead. What might not filter through our partisan press is that shortly after pointing out that, like John McCain, he sports a bracelet given to him by a military family, Barack Obama had to stop and look down find out the name of the soldier he's honoring.

That soldier is Ryan David Jopek. Barack Obama doesn't appear to have known that fact.

Here's his complete line:

"Jim, let me just make a point. I've got a bracelet too. From, Sergeant, uh, uh, from the mother of, uh, Sergeant, Ryan David Jopek."

Had a Republican, say Sarah Palin, made this gaffe, who wants to bet that we wouldn't hear this clip repeated endlessly during the post-debate spin shows and in the days ahead? How much would the sincerity of our hypothetical Republican politician be called into question.

I didn't hear it discussed once in the post-debate coverage. Did you?

Sidenote: Michelle Malkin reminds us that this incident is remarkably reminiscent of the now-famous incident of George H. W. Bush looking at his watch during the 1992 presidential debates.

Update 3:22. No mention of Obama's gaffe by Reuters reporter Jeremy Pelofsky.

UK Guardian unsurprisingly misses it as well.

Silence from Boston Globe and New York Times.

Update 9-28 16:05. Warner Huston reports that  the family of Jopek has asked Obama to stop wearing the bracelet.

Bracelet

Obama had to check the bracelet because he appeared to have forgotten the name.

Correct.

Why bother to remember something as important that?

McCain destroyed Obama tonight.

I commented

on that in the debate thread last night...in addition did you even see a bracelet? I could not and did not take the time to run the "tape" back and see what was there.

The whole moment was so hollow for bho...

Breaking news !!!

Henry Kissinger was just interviewed live on Fox News minutes ago and he said "no president should sit down with the Iranian president without preconditions, preset by working level diplomats." (paraphrase)

However, Obama lied and said Kissinger told McCain he should just sit down with the president of Iran without preconditions.

Obama, the liar, had a fire, now its been quenched.

He sucks at prose, see his big nose, now he's been benched.

... Another note: What president, without preconditions would sit down with a leader, knowing the political risk to him/herself if he/she walked away empty? That is why there are always preconditions. Obama is not only a piss-poor excuse for a president, he's not even politically smart.

New tech

There's a new whisper-projector available now.  It uses intersecting ultrasonic beams to produce ("beat frequency") sound audible only where they cross.  So Oblabla could have been listening to coaches all night long, if someone managed to sneak a couple of the required small parabolic dishes into the venue!  ;)

Crown thy good into temptation but deliver us from the twilight's last gleaming. Amen and Awomen.

Matthew, glad to see you're keeping  your Obama campaign stylebook handy.

Too bad he didn't have a chance to "clarify" or "recalibrate" the remark.

This Election is Over

On Election Day undecided voters will be going into the booth - not knowing Obama well - and pulling the lever for McCain to be "safe." Last night McCain firmly secured that and the commercials using Obama's gaffes (agreeing 8 times, grossly misrepresenting Kissinger, unconditional meetings) will reinforce that.

I would also like to see McCain's last statement made into a commercial.

Gat -- I agree. I was

Gat -- I agree. I was listening to the conventional wisdom by the pundits, which seem to be that as Obama is leading (albeit marginally) all he need to do in the debates is turn up, look Presidential and not make a big silly gaffe.

Whereas McCain has to "win" the debates hands down to stand a chance in the general.

I think that's totally ass backwards.

So much has been invested by the MSM narrative in the alleged "superiority" of the young guy, as oppsed to this old fart, that I think it's McCain who only has to turn up, and stand up well against the youthful, charismatic (allegedly) Obama to win in the general.

If he actually wins the debate, that's just cream on top. Just my two pennethworth

I just listened to Fox

I just listened to Fox since it was late and I had no patience for putting up with the MSLSD loons.

I was surprised that Fred Barnes did not pick up on the stark differences between them and not just on policy. I thought Juan Williams had a better assessment than Barnes did. And surprisingly Krathammer was even worse (he was also wrong on Palin). No. McCain only had to remind people who he was. Obama first had to educate people who he was - and he lost.

The Kissinger assertion was a huge gaffe and Kissinger has immediately gone on the record supporting McCain's view and essentially calling Obama a liar. Then there was the meeting with Ahmadinejad situation. McCain made a fool of him.

Of course if you read th NY Times you would think there was an entirely debate happening somewhere else that we missed.

And I was just watching Claire MaCaskill. Doesn't she remind you of Bette Davis in What Ever Happened To Baby Jane?

Gat -- I just DO NOT

Gat -- I just DO NOT understand what's happened to Krauthammer this month. There really is some off-beam talk by usually reliable sources on the right.

Have you read Kathryn Lopez in the NRO on Palin. It's nuts. She's gone nuts.

Journalism s Dead

I agree with Hannity that professional journalism is dead. The media have long dropped any pretense of objectivity and fairness and have adopted the art of lying to further their new goals.

Their old goals were to provide factual information Their new goals is to provide propaganda.

That is going to be McCain's challenge which is how does he counter - not Obama - but the fraudulent stories by 85% of the media who have one objective which is to get Obama elected.

Regarding Palin, has the question "what foreign leaders have you negotiated with" (Couric) been asked of Obama, or when they were running Governor Clinton, Governor Carter, or Governor Reagan? No. This is blatant hatchet job on Palin and she should have thrown it back at Couric and asked if she asked that question of Obama or Clinton etc.

gat -- the next time she's

gat -- the next time she's asked that she should respond thus:

"I'm the governor of a state, not the United States. You may not know this (insert name) but the constitution of the United States is quite explicit on whom may and may not "negotiate" with foreign powers. So why are you asking me such an uniformed and childish question?"

I don't want to mock this

I don't want to mock this incident too much, as it is centered on the sad death of a soldier in the service of his country.

We must remember that Ryan's mother gave it to Senator Obama as a sign of her love for her son. That's the important part of this story. Her love for her son who made the ultimate sacrifice for his country.

But the clip is just cringe inducing. I mean truly bad. Jumping in instantly with "I've got a braclet too" like it's a one-up-manship, then not being totally sure of Ryan's name.

Why couldn't he have just waited for another opportunity to mention this in honor of Ryan. Urggghhh.

JB, I agree, it did appear

JB, I agree, it did appear to truely matter to JMac but was only an afterthought for BOb.

The problem with the whole bracelet thing, is that it may or may not represent the SOLDIER's views or wishes.  Just as Cindy Sheehan was the antithesis of everything her son Casey stood for,  how do we know that Ryan would have been in support of the cut-and-run, socialist, troop-bashing democrats?

When asked if he went to war with Iraq  to derail the impeachment vote:  “I don’t think any serious person would believe that any President would do such a thing." - President Clinton (Dec 1998).

jerry, true. But I just

jerry, true.

But I just feel we should all be very wary of dragging the mom into this on any level.

Cindy Sheehan isn't really analagous, as her agenda from the start has been offensive to so many Gold Star Moms, mainly because she has presumed to speak for them.

I honestly don't think we have the right to quesion the motives of Ryan's mom (or whether he might agree with her politics) on any level; Obama supporter or not.. You see where I'm coming from?

I rate that excellent.  He

I rate that excellent.  He was obviously choked up.  There is no possible way that we can ever know, at a moment like that, what happens in the heart and mind of someone who has been through what John McCain went through during his time of military service to our nation.  I know the emotion that stirred in me, I can't begin to imagine the emotion that stirred in him.

Why is this man not a laughingstock?

Besides your excellent point about looking for the name on the bracelet...

No President in my lifetime, and you would have to go back long before I was born, has had the luxury of not having to send our military into harms way.

The man wants to cut and run from a war we started. He is on the stage promising that another mother will not go through what she went through. That is, having her son die in a war I presume. THIS IS WHAT PRESIDENTS DO! They send our military in harms way. It is the primary job. Commander In Chief. It is listed right there in the Constitution. It is the heaviest responsibility. When Presidents carry it out, they age before our very eyes from the weight.

Then we have this man up there on stage after stage, telling us, oh no, I won't do that, I will just take the pay for the other parts of the job.

This man annoys me to no end. As a veteran, I want to slap him nearly every time he opens his mouth.

Sincerely,

a Veteran of a 1000 psychic wars.

That particular portion of the evening was about the most telling.

But frankly I think this debate could not be called anything but a draw for both debaters.  Neither were able to put the other on the mat for any length of time.

In this case, I hate to say it, but a draw favors Obama since we all expected him to much worse in an actual confrontation.

Hi BD. I agree with you

Hi BD.

I agree with you to a point. I think Obama had to calm all us angry white folk and tell us to not fear him, and he didn't do that last night.

Interesting point. You could

John McCain's name was on a bracelet

I have a friend that still wears an POW bracelet that has John McCain's name ON IT!!!! She got to meet him when he came to Texas a few months ago.

txco

Yours may be THE point about the bracelet thing.

John McCain spoke of his with reverence, as he did at the end of the debate.

Barack Obama just threw it out there like "me too!", it was totally disrespectful, for crying out loud, he didn't even know the man's name.  That, to me, indicates the regard in which (lack thereof, actually) he holds the individual members of our armed services.

You are spot on.

It is what I have thought, but not put in words as well as you did blonde.

Blonde, The bracelet was

Blonde,

The bracelet was nothing more than an ornament to festoon his christmas tree campaign, to borrow from McCain and Laura Ingraham who actually used this phrasing during her Friday show before the debates - seems someone in the McCain campaign listens to Laura!

Another ornament he wore/utilized was the flag pin.  These are nothing more than accoutrements, chotchke's if you will, with little meaning other than their value to get him votes.  It is base, arrogant and manipulative.

His "me too" moment also shows the childish id nature that his ego cannot sublimate, Freudian speaking.  It is all about Obama, first and last.  It is a younger brother's or an outsider's plea for acceptance into the group.  In this instance, it was shameless self aggrandizement, as it used the death of one person and the anguish of another's in order to to prove Obama's worthiness and stature.

A very unpresidential moment for Obama.

I know, Strat...audacity

My jaw dropped at his audacity to pull a stunt like that....."I have one too, given to me by the mother of...uh, uhh, uhhhh, (gosh what do I do now, can't remember the dude's name...looks at wrist)".

See my response to Granny, below.

I think the McC campaign should run these two incidents in tandem, "Audacity, all right....the audacity to use our valiant troops as props, and the memory of 9-11 victims as a photo op."

I've taken to thinking of Obama as a trained seal....and every time he bellows like a bull seal "ugh, ugh, ugh" I say..."throw the man a fish!".

David Gregory, do you know which damn network you lie for? ~ Uncle Jimbo, @Blackfive

Indeed

It's one of those moments,

It's one of those moments, like when he just casually chucked the flower onto the pile at Ground Zero, that makes you cringe and hope this Clueless Clyde isn't out representing our country come January.

It's not a huge thing in and of itself, but it's one more link in a long chain.

Granny

I thought of that insensitive action by B. Hussein Obama as well.

The two, in tandem, are very, very telling.

And the contrast between John McCain and Obama is immense.  The thought of that inconsiderate, self-centered oaf being CIC makes me shudder.  If we thought the Clinton's were disrespectful of members of the military, wait until Barry & Michelle can order them around the White House.  Nightmare.

David Gregory, do you know which damn network you lie for? ~ Uncle Jimbo, @Blackfive

Reminded me - what was it

that Hillary did?  Told the military in the halls of the White House to NOT speak to her when she went by???  Something like that.  In fact, I believe it had a few @#$% attached ;-)

Just what we need - more self-centered uncaring individuals in the White House!

It is my understanding that both George and Laura Bush are highly regarded by the staff - and, to me, that speaks VOLUMES of their character!

Barack's bracelet is a prop.

That's all it is, and it ain't no more.

Sen. McCain's obviously means something to him.  Barack couldn't even be bothered to remember the name of, ah, um, the Sergeant, um, the mother, um, on that bracelet.

You're totally right

I want to laugh about that but have to remind myself that someone died in combat and it's not appropriate....but the way the Messiah perked up with "ME TOO! ME TOO!" reminded me of a jealous child showing off a cool new toy to the one that the neighbor's kid just got

I have been working with

I have been working with preschoolers at church for over 17 years so when I heard his I got a bracelet too I had a bad case of deja vu. One boy in particular came to mind.. no mater what anyone else had done that week he had done it too!

To me it all fit with his condescending/cavalier attitude. Yes well I need not bother with names my people deal with that. <gag>

~lbcdawn Religion is about doing. Christianity is about done.

I knew a lot of folks in the

I knew a lot of folks in the 70's that wore the POW bracelets. Those individuals didn't have to look at their wrists to remember the name the bracelet bore. The knew details about the individual POW. Obama's was simply trying to use his as a political prop and it failed miserably. He should be ashamed.

If Obama didn't have a

If Obama didn't have a bracelet, he would have simply said that "bracelets themselves don't mean anything about support for soldiers, I prefer to show my support in other ways"....

.......just like the lapel pin BS.

I wish he hadn't had a bracelet too because I would have loved to hear this because you KNOW he would have responded to it in some similar way as the lapel pin crap.

Why didn't he say that?

Why didn't he say that? Having the bracelet didn't mean he couldn't have made the comment about more important ways to honor our servicemembers.

Matthew: You are exactly

Matthew:

You are exactly right about this. John McCain is going to have a hard time beating the MSM in this race. Not so much beating BO.

I do believe there has never been such bias in the media.  It is shameful but in my eyes the MSM will never recover their credibility.

Credibility in and of

Credibility in and of itself, they don't care about.  Credibility with whom is the focus.  Liberals are fine with the bias so that's the audience.

It's kinda like discrimination.  I get into discussions with liberals who claim to hate discrimination, yet when the topic of Affirmative Action comes up, and pointing out "all things equal, a white male CAN lose out due to a quota requirement," they're ok with that - i.e. they aren't principled as they like to claim they are.  They're only against it when it would be unfavorable to them.  If favorable, they are for it and will argue hard that it's not discrimination.

I would wager that this will

I would wager that this will be one of the only places we see or hear about this incident. When my wife and I were watching that event unfold our collective jaws dropped at the sheer juvenile idiocy of the remark "Well, Ive got one two"...what was that all about, then he couldnt remember the soldiers name? (where is my teleprompter when I need it!) and for a good portion of the first part of the debate he couldnt seem to get McCains name right either.......but of course I guess none of this matters as Obama appears to have "Won" this debate.

nadadhimmi: Come on, both

nadadhimmi: Come on, both these Oligarch's suck. McCain wants to destroy the 1st Amendment, and Obama the 2nd. Both want as many illegal aliens as possible in the country. Let's get down to brass tacks and execute the Wall Street financial traitors for war profiteering and assisting the enemy. People like Bill Clinton and Bob Dole who sell out the countries interests for Arab money in places such as Dubai and United Arab Emirates. Not just Barack Hussein Obama, but Barack "I've got a bracelet, too!!" Hussein Obama.  And bring it up every single time you refer to the guy.

to me, this incident

speaks volumes about the character (I know that's a bad word in the dictionary) of these candidates. To Sen. Obama, the wearing of this bracelet is merely "bling". It has no meaning to him other than it serves a political purpose. Sen. McCain would have probably been able to tell the story and name the soldier without even referring to his bracelet. To him, this death meant something. The American voters and MSM need to wake up and realize there is no substance within Obama.

Oh! Me too! Me too!

When Barrack started to mention his bracelet, then looked down and started shuffling his papers, I wasn't getting that warm fuzzy feeling.

Maybe that is because he is a fraud!

Governor Palin - She is the Real Deal !

hint hint

hint, hint: Obama does not care about winning in Iraq, does not care that there are never any more wars either, he just cares about being President.

Political Fellatio

...that's what came to mind when I saw Gibson, Sawyer, etc reacting to the debate with their usual spin.

It is far worse than just the death of Journalism. For me as a mid forties Gen X guy Journalism died when the MSM tried to pretend that Reagan and Carter were neck and neck the weekend before the election when the real truth was that a massive landslide for Reagan was on the horizon.

Now the MSM is nothing more that a political brothel for the left wing. The prostitution ring was outed long ago. This election is about making leftist political brothels morally acceptable to the American People.

The MSM message:

Barack is sexier and more enlightened because of his leftist views therfore he should be president.

McCain is a smelly old man that even a hooker wouldn't touch.

Yuck, way too un-sexy to be president.

It really is that shallow guys.

The only thing deep about the MSM is how deep they are willing to swallow for Obama.

"Rather graphic but 100% true."

Yes. My apologies to Christian Conservatives and others put off by this kind of talk.

The obscenity of the MSM bias however deserves such an analogy.

I have 2 bracelets.

One bears the image and dates of birth and death of Corporal Jason Dunham, a Marine Corps Medal of Honor recipient in Iraq. He was a pretty amazing young man. I get teary when I see his picture, so young and full of life... Both my brother and I were so struck by his story we decided he should always be remembered and he will (at least by us).

The second bracelet bears the name of a Sgt. Major of the U.S. Marine Corps, a veteran of both Korea and VietNam.  That one is my dad's...

As I just watched a video

As I just watched a video of McCain telling a campaign audience about the story of the dog tags, I thought to myself how he could have knocked the debate right out of the park......follow along........

McCain gives his talk about where the bracelet came from, just as he did last night, the Obama says "I've got a bracelet too" and goes into his story.  McCain, at that moment, with the most sincere, yet a humble stern-ness, could have turned to Obama, paused for just a second while looking directly at him and said......

"Senator Obama
...<pause>....

....it's not about...<pause>...a bracelet."

....Then turn back to his podium with that humble, yet stern, yet slight disgusted-with-his-opponent look on his face.  It would have been a moment similar to moments of the past that we always hear about....Reagan telling Carter "there you go again"....Benston telling Quayle "you're no Jack Kennedy."

Done correctly, that could have been a moment for the ages and certainly a moment for this election season.

EXCELLENT response!

Wish Senator McCain had been more "in the moment" to have come back with that, but can certainly understand after the days he'd just spent dealing with the likes of Chris Dodd & Barney Frank, Harry Reid & Nancy Pelosi et al.

On second thought, though, he constantly tells us he doesn't want to conduct an ugly campaign, and perhaps he would look at that as such.

I also think he missed a couple of other similar opportunities to mention the FM/FM mess and Obama's (and the Democrats) involvement.

In the end, the word will get around, AP, Reuters, NYT, Boston Globe be damned.  Wait til Rush mentions it Monday!

Hey barry, got get yourself a REAL job and see how long you last ASShole!

How can he get a "real" job

when his resume is EMPTY!  We really don't know much at all about this man other than what he writes in his books.  No school records, no college records...and I still want to hear someone from Chicago come forth to tell us how his "community organizing" helped the person get on the road to a better life.  A "better" life, not one that would end up protesting inequities or one that says all white people are trash and that God should not look kindly on America.

I saw

I saw the bracelet discussion and thought you could see the impression that it made on Sen. McCain. Barak jumps in with a grade school like comment "Me too" and I thought how pathetic it was that he couldn't properly remember the name and stumbled to say it.

I guess we can all tell who has thought long and hard about the name of the man on his bracelet.

bracelet on?

Will be interesting to see if the bracelet in question is still on his right wrist next time he waves at the masses.

"I have a bracelet too" Barak Obama, political sociopath..

Thank you for the reminder Mr. Sheffield

I honestly in focusing on the catastrophe of Barack Obama did not focus on this tragic moment. It was so horrid that one laughed at it in reflex in not being able to deal with this slight.

I would love to hear the real story in how Obama got this bracelet as if it was given to him, or his staff went out and got one or if  the mother actually sought him out and gave him the bracelet.

That of course is thee most disgusting of things for the Jopek family to have met the messiah, put their faith in him and this person of Barack Obama could have cared less to remember the Soldier's name when he fully intended to use it as a political ploy.

I sincerely would hope that the Cindy Sheehan mothers would look at Mrs. Sheehan, used and whored by the Democratic party and then how they tossed aside her and her son after they got power.

I honestly feel horrible for the Jopek family to know they realize that their son's bracelet is nothing to Barack Obama.

No one can ask the real story though as it would be something no one would do who has morals in invading that family's privacy even if in their mental state they decided to use their son as fodder for Obama like Cindy Sheehan did her child against George Bush.

Al Franken is using a dead Minnesota kid in his commercials too.

Ghouls is the word.

The Jopek family should demand their bracelet back and find someone in the Democratic party who at least would respect it.
