NewsBusters Turns Three

Photo of Matthew Sheffield.

Three years ago on August 9, 2005 was the first day of NewsBusters.

What a great three years it's been. In the intervening time since our start, we've been featured in every major American newspaper, launched a number of stories into the national news cycle, and had a lot of fun doing it.

We couldn't have done any of this had it not been for the fantastic institution of the Media Research Center that Brent Bozell has succeeded in building. Thanks also are due to MRC vice president Brent Baker who was able to see what NewsBusters could grow into, the first and strongest collaboration between a Washington political group and the blogosphere.

We're also grateful to the many conservative media figures who have promoted this site in their audiences. Thanks in particular to Rush Limbaugh who has stood up as a strong supporter of NewsBusters since day one. We're also grateful to the fair-minded journalists who realize that yes, even a bunch of evil right-wingers might occassionally have a point in our critiques. Thanks also to our fellow members of the blogosphere for being out there on the frontlines of new media reporting the news the MSM won't.

Finally thanks to you our readers. We couldn't have done it without your continued viewership, story tips, and your help in spreading the word about NewsBusters. Together we are making a difference.

I look forward to continuing to do that for many years to come.

Congratulations!

I look forward to many more years of the exposing of more liberal media bias. This site is one of the most widely read of all conservative sites, well done.

Thanks a lot Matt.

I love this place.

Congratulations.

Keep up the good work.

Wow - I really was here from the start

I thought it was a few months after it started but the Hurricane Katrina coverage is what brought me over the edge and had me searching the Internet for some something other than the stupid MSM.

I posted for awhile without registering - you used to be able to do that.

Thanks for watching the MSM Newsbusters so I don't have to!

Same here, Dee

Everyone who has 2 years and 41 weeks was probably posting before that, but without registering.
JMR

The tax & spend drug war looks racist in the real world.

I remember you from the beginning Sarc

I remember specifically when they made everyone register. It was after an article about Al Franken and he flooded the site with all his minions. I think that is why they did it. I think there was a lot of sock puppetry going on.
I posted as anonymous for a while because I didn't know you could create a name and was afraid to register. Then JAB chewed me out one day (he was sick of all the anon posters because you couldn't tell who was who). So he told be how to create a name and then I was "liberalnomore" for a while. Then I finally registered after they forced it because I was already addicted.

The artist formerly known as...

I posted as anonymous_in_kr for soem time because, well, I was in Korea at the time...

(Slightly off topic...an ESPN idiot called these Olympic Games the first staged on the Asian mainland.  I hope the geography idiot consults an atlas after getting hammered by countless Koreans and people who have a connection to Korea one way or another...

Well...

I keep threatening to register as NOTwarnertoddhuston so that way I can call all you guys names and you won't know who I am!

HA!

I didn't realize, myself, that the site hadn't been around but 8 or 9 months before I signed on. I had the feeling for a while that I was the last guy on Earth that had heard of NewsBusters.

At this point, I don't even remember how I found out about NB or how I ended up writing for NB? I do know I'd never registered here until I ended up being a contributor.

Anyway, it's been a great ride so far. I am grateful to the NB crew for putting up with me (I know what a pain in the rear I am, my wife tells me all the time) and for letting me be a part of this fine enterprise.

My visits at the MRC near Washington D.C. were great, too. What a fantastic, impressive place.

And all the posters here are top shelf. Even the lefty ones, for the most part, are some of the best, most sane posters on the Internet.

So, here is to another 3... no 30... years, and beyond. Why so many? Well we KNOW the media will NEVER clean up its act!

Happy B-Day NewsBusters.

And we're just getting started!

Congrats to Matthew and the gang for giving us who take a stand for the truth a place to stick it to 'em! You guys at NB are doing a great job and, having been on here for 1 year and 25 weeks, I feel honored to be one of those who puts in my two cents of vast right wing conspiratorial opinion here.

It's good to be a part of this 'right-eous rebellion'. The looney left is taking notice that we're madder than hell and we're not going to take it anymore!

And, BTW - NewsBusted is great, too! Tell Jodi Miller I think she's adorable!

All right NBrs, let's roll!

H/t to NB

Huge props to NewsBusters!!!

9 August 2005?  Really?  I remember that day very very well for other reasons entirely...

Again, congratulations to NewsBusters, and thanks to the NB powers that be for tolerating my ranting and raving for the past 2 1/2 years (has it been that long already???)...

The Olympics have begun in Beijing.  May the people of Beijing get positively sick of hearing the Star Spangled Banner from hearing it so many times!  May the organizing committee run out of U.S. flags for medal ceremonies!  USA!  USA!! USA!!!

Thank you NB

Matt,

Happy Anniversary, my dear friend. And thank you for inviting me to be a part of this fabulous website -- and to your brother Greg as well.

Although I didn't officially post on our Opening Day three years ago, my first post was indeed on August 9 where I live: http://newsbusters.o...

My thanks to Messrs. Bozell, Baker, Graham, Noyes, Gainor, Shepherd, and everyone at the MRC.

And, to all NewsBusters...Happy Anniversary!

Cool that you could find your first post Noel

I tried to look for some original posts but it looks like they didn't save the posts from way back. Too bad.

Dee

Dee,

You looking for articles or comments? ns

Noel

The comments. I remember a few wild threads like with Franken but I looked it up and just like yours there are no comments with it.

I also typed my handle liberalnomore and nothing came in the search. I did that about a year ago looking for something and there was stuff there then. Maybe there is a 2yr limit on comments or something.

Dee

Dee,

Ohhhh. I didn't realize the comments were gone from those early articles. That's too bad. ns

Noel

I guess it makes sense that they can't keep stuff forever.

Well done Noel

I know I am biased but I tend to read most of your articles. Thanks for all the time invested, I truly believe people are better informed because of it.

John McCain 2008 Protect Traditional Marriage

Traditional Marriage is not "Divisive" Obama.

Unless we had a

Unless we had a Condorcet-style voting sytem (which I 100% support for all elections) or the two front-runners were exactly the same (which is not the case this year - McCain, with all of his faults, is still clearly better than Obama), I will never vote for a third-party candidate.

“There are no easy answers' but there are simple answers. We must have the courage to do what we know is morally right.” - Ronald Reagan (1964 Republican Convention)

I'm gonna see just how much media bias there is, *again*

Against the Libertarians (who are far more fiscally conservative than our 'conservative' troll would like, hence his worries expressed above). If it's too bad/blatant, I might just vote Barr to teach the media a lesson. This will also be a part of teaching Barr a lesson the LP has been teaching him since we gave him some "tough love" long ago. And to head off some dumb arguments, doing that, if I choose to do it, won't be either "throwing my vote away" ('88 proved that!) or "voting for Obama."
JMR

The tax & spend drug war looks racist in the real world.

Again, if Obama and McCain

Again, if Obama and McCain were twins politically, I would vote for a third-party candidate. However, as bad as McCain is, he's still much preferrable to Obama.

Maybe if I were both economically and politically powerful enough that I could ignore the damage that would be done by the Democrats if they had all three branches of government, I could cast my vote for Barr or somebody like that. However, that's not the case.

“There are no easy answers' but there are simple answers. We must have the courage to do what we know is morally right.” - Ronald Reagan (1964 Republican Convention)

Your choice is yours, as mine's mine

I'm just publicly warning an overly biased media that if they're TOO over the top against the Libertarians, as they've obviously been in the past, they'll have effects they don't anticipate from their blatant bias. I don't care for McCain because of his speech control fetish, and I don't care for Obama because I don't trust him on guns, so neither major party candidate passes even the beginning of the Bill of Rights test for me, and we're not even close to the 9th & 10th Amendments before they both flunked. I also think both are likely to spend too much. But my main point is a shot across the bow of antilibertarian media bias.

Think about it -- if you're old like me, just how much did you hear in the MSM about the LP before the widespread adoption of the internet (an information medium those with antilibertarian bias could not control)? I heard practically nothing, and I was actually looking. There's nothing in the Constitution about a "2 party system." In fact, early American history (as if anyone reads THAT anymore) is replete with distrust for political parties due to the mindless loyalty parties tend to breed. Our Founders were thinkers. Not many of those in our media these days, or politics...
JMR

The tax & spend drug war looks racist in the real world.

I'm all for third parties

I'm all for third parties if we utilized the Condorcet voting method, but for the present system, they're never going to be a force. That's just a political reality, unfortunately.

As for antilibertarian bias, the MSM is certainly biased against the conservative side of that philosophy, but I don't think they are actively against libertarians as a whole (as they undeniably are with conservatives). They do notice them if they can hurt Republicans, however.

“There are no easy answers' but there are simple answers. We must have the courage to do what we know is morally right.” - Ronald Reagan (1964 Republican Convention)

No, they're biased against ALL aspects, not just the fiscal

I'll give an example which makes my point: I spend tax money on April 15th not just for wasteful incarceration and corruption, but also for clueless drugwar propaganda with which I strongly disagree. The drug warrior side can't win a fair debate without speech subsidies to help 'em (which probably explains why a few of 'em get so unhinged & hysterical they can't even argue coherently when whinging at me on the subject!)

That's just a single specific example (don't make me dig up URLs to prove taxpayers finance BS propaganda, 'cuz I'll have plenty & you won't like 'em) but I have other examples if you want, too. My thesis of "antilibertarian bias is the problem" is unshaken unless you can give me some reason why I'm wrong, and I still maintain the word "liberal" used by the NB masthead has no single, coherent meaning while I'm at it. :)
JMR

The tax & spend drug war looks racist in the real world.

The problem...

The problem I have with too many Libertarians and the drug argument is that they all too often go overboard with the "well if they want to do them they should" argument. I am 100% on board with the idea that the war on drugs is now and always was a failure. But too many libertarians go to the extreme position of saying that drugs should be OK to those who want them.

I disagree strongly there. Drugs are for losers, weaklings, idiots and fools. Anyone who uses them on a regular basis... or any basis at all... are wrong on every level. And those that want to protect those that do drugs are just as guilty of fostering sloth and stupidity.

We should be using peer pressure for what it is actually for, discouraging anti-social, low-born behavior. Anyone who uses drugs should be considered a loser, not a "cool" person. Then again, I feel the same way about (c)Rap music! LOL. (It's low born and stupid and anyone who likes it should be considered not socially acceptable!)

However, the extreme laws that we have against drugs are illogical. They shouldn't be any more regulated than alcohol and just as prosecuted by law when abused to the danger of other people.

I am not for complete legalization. But the laws we now have are obviously not working.

Ok, understood, but what gets me is

My opponents can look at lower drug usage rates in Amsterdam, which my side cites over & over because study after study has shown it, and then proceed to argue that because I want drug laws like Amsterdam's I must be advocating higher levels of drug use here in the USA, as if these impotent laws are actually doing any good whatsoever. Um, have we (1.) gone that far towards emotion and away from logic, here, or (2.) should one side of the debate carefully check the origin of the mushrooms on their pizzas?? It's one choice or the other!

It must  be faith driving my opponents' zeal, because it sure as hell can't be anything resembling logic. And because this is a "Nixon goes to China" type of thing, actual drug law reform is likely to happen under a Republican President, and it's likely to come in the form of a strategic retreat on 'soft' drugs like pot and some of the lower potency forms of cocaine, such as the tea made from the leaves. An ancient episode of WFB's "Firing Line" which mentions the "white powder theory" of which drugs are good and which are bad keeps coming to mind, even though I saw it about 2 decades ago, and haven't seen it since.
JMR

The tax & spend drug war looks racist in the real world.

I won't

I won't say anything about your feelings on who should or shouldn't do drugs. I've never seen you discuss the issue.

But, I'd caution you about using Amsterdam too much. They are currently rethinking their liberal drug laws because they are finding public spaces destroyed by litter from drug use and public intoxication is rampant. It's no nirvana.

But, one thing is sure. The high penalties makes drug pushing here quite lucrative and the crime from that is worse than the troubles of needles littering public spaces like Amsterdam is experiencing!

And this makes me even madder... the drug war bloats Federal and local policing costs and creates needless agencies dedicated (and funded) just to go after drugs. Were I king for a day I'd immediately shut down the DEA and the BATF.

Daniel, If this country is to be saved, it will be libertarian..

...principles that ultimately will save it.

This nation was founded on those principles, which essentially boil down to the primacy of the individual over that of any government.

The republicrats have perverted those principles to the point where they are virtually nonexistent now.

Dave.

We are not going to save this country by being polite to those who are working tirelessly (and succeeding right handily) at destroying it.

Liberal-tarian principles are destroying the country

Liberal-tarians are imagining rights that fight traditional values.

John McCain 2008 Protect Traditional Marriage

Traditional Marriage is not "Divisive" Obama.

Got ANYTHING LIKE a specific, nontrolling argument?

Because according to US, they're not "liberal" in the way you're trying to caricature. And we have plenty of counterarguments if your argument is, shall we say, weakly standard. My question is simple, though: When did libertarians ever have enough political power to do the damage you claim, instead of just trying to fight spending by "conservatives" who give fiscal responsibility lip service at election time?
JMR

The tax & spend drug war looks racist in the real world.

Daniel, whose traditional values? Your precious repblicans...

...managed to double the size and scope of the federal government in a six-year period. That was far more than the democrats could even hope for.

Is that part of your view on "traditional values?"

Besides, since when is it the responsibility of the federal government to enforce traditional values? Are individual Americans not capable of doing this themselves?

We are not going to save this country by being polite to those who are working tirelessly (and succeeding right handily) at destroying it.

Some folks think this is why

Some folks think this is why the Republicans no longer control the Congress:  They governed like liberal Democrats when it came to fiscal matters.

Congratulations NewsBusters! This site is my first read of the day and the one I visit most. I found this place shortly after it started, learning of it through the MRC website. I didn't register right away, but visited daily. I do remember it was a global warming story that finally got me to register and start posting.

Thank you NewsBusters and here's to another three years and many more!

Love this site

I lurked for about two years before posting for the first time.I read NB's every weeknight, while watching the cable Moonbat Parades.Has anyone noticed we've been close to 5000 guests online last week(4996).I wonder what is the most guests so far.

Well I'm one of the newbies

Well I'm one of the newbies who hasn't been a member for a full year but I read this site more than watching the Today show since I'm essentially forced to listen to their propoganda (I work at an NBC station). In fact the Today show in an inadvertant way was how I found Newsbusters. Before I knew the concept of liberal media bias (hey I'm still basically a kid) I just listened to the talking heads tell me the war was a lost cause, Bush was the most horrible president ever, and America was the worst country in the world. But I could never totally agree (or become brainwashed) with what they were saying and I could never take on the liberal mindset because I'm pro-life, as a weatherman I knew global warming was bogus, and I believe in sticking up for Godly and conservative values. Well the Today show had Laura Ingraham on one day talking about her new book and it was refreshing to hear that point of view. I went to her website and it led me to this one. Keep up the good work guys...and I want to let you know there are conservatives under 30 who enjoy this site.

Happy Birthday Newsbusters !

Happy Birthday Newsbusters !

Media watchdog success

In March 2001, I was vocalizing my concerns of what I perceived as lies being repeated so often that they were being taken as to be truths.  The major culprits were  our major news organizations.  I made mention of how our television broadcasters had tried to sway the 2000 presidential election by announcing election trends and state returns before the election polling had ended.  It was extremely apparent they were pulling for Al Gore to win and doing their part by discouraging voters with uncast ballots from going to vote.  In one prestigious national paper, one particular writer's discription of  east Texas led me to believe that he had never been to the region that he was alegedly reporting from, all the while passing his editors on different elevators at the newpaper office.  And then there was the reporter who discribed how a car bombing victim's head rolled up to his sidewalk table after the blast, eyes still blinking.  Maybe they enjoyed embellishing their stories; I took it as undo influence of the lessor educated.  What say you now Dan Rather, Jason Blair, Jack Kelley?

Thanks, Newsbusters, for being there and enabling us to have a forum where we can be heard and letting the MSM know we are watching for bias  in the media.

Congratulations!

I probably saw the NewsBusters link on CNSNews, one of the sites I check regularly. I enjoyed reading the articles and discussion at first, then signed on 1yr and 12 weeks ago so that I could participate. I like the fact that information that is ignored or slanted by the MSM is identified and discussed so we can check it out further for ourselves. This is truly a "Liberal" site in the old/good sense of the word because posters of all opinions are discussing your articles on everything from Politics to Climate.

Keep up the good work!

Nice Work!

Congratulations to everyone who makes this site the most informative blog on the internet.  From the writers, to the editors, and to the readers.

NB is the VERY BEST!

Thank you for being here.

YOU ARE family.

And I am so happy for ALL my brothers and sisters.

Although my time here is short, I LOVE NB.

I wish you and all of us MANY years of Birthdays!

A Valuable Service

I have always thought journalists should present all sides of stories/issues, and not take sides. Sadly, that is not often the case. Most major newspapers, and wire services, slant their reporting and commentary to the left, as do most broadcast and cable news networks.

It's not supposed to be that way. Newsbusters busts them on that, and provides a very valuable service to its readers.

Screwed up reporting priorities

Not to get too far off thread, since I have not read through all of it, but there is the beginnings of a war going on in the Republic of Georgia.  The Russians have invaded for all intents and purposes and we have advisers there assisting the Georgians.

So with that going on we are worried about a well coifed hypocritical politician that will not have a "D" after his name.  Some things in life are serious and Johnny boy does not fit the serious bill.

Americans, wake up!!!!

Rant finished

Thanks Newsbusters for all that you have done.  Look forward to more good reporting and common sense discussions.  That excludes the usual trolls.

Happy Birthday NB...

And a special thanks to Rush for turning-me-on to this site.

One of the things I like best about being here from the beginning (2 years 44 weeks) is... I have learned so much, which of course should be the reason why people come here in the first place.

Thanks to all of you for making this happen. NB is truly one of those sites
