Fearful Publisher Drops Novel About Mohammed's Wife

Self-censorship toward radical Muslims continues to be a problem in corporate America. The latest casualty: a book by author Sherry Jones about Aisha, the favored wife of Islam's founder Mohammed, whom he is said to have betrothed when she was less than ten years old.

Writing in today's Wall Street Journal,  Asra Q. Nomani tells how the book,  "The Jewel of Medina," got canceled by would-be publisher Random House thanks to a politically correct professor of Islamic studies named Denise Spellberg:

In an interview about Ms. Jones's novel, Thomas Perry, deputy publisher at Random House Publishing Group, said that it "disturbs us that we feel we cannot publish it right now." He said that after sending out advance copies of the novel, the company received "from credible and unrelated sources, cautionary advice not only that the publication of this book might be offensive to some in the Muslim community, but also that it could incite acts of violence by a small, radical segment."

After consulting security experts and Islam scholars, Mr. Perry said the company decided "to postpone publication for the safety of the author, employees of Random House, booksellers and anyone else who would be involved in distribution and sale of the novel."

This saga upsets me as a Muslim -- and as a writer who believes that fiction can bring Islamic history to life in a uniquely captivating and humanizing way. "I'm devastated," Ms. Jones told me after the book got spiked, adding, "I wanted to honor Aisha and all the wives of Muhammad by giving voice to them, remarkable women whose crucial roles in the shaping of Islam have so often been ignored -- silenced -- by historians." Last month, Ms. Jones signed a termination agreement with Random House, so her literary agent could shop the book to other publishers.

This time, the instigator of the trouble wasn't a radical Muslim cleric, but an American academic. In April, looking for endorsements, Random House sent galleys to writers and scholars, including Denise Spellberg, an associate professor of Islamic history at the University of Texas in Austin. Ms. Jones put her on the list because she read Ms. Spellberg's book, "Politics, Gender, and the Islamic Past: The Legacy of 'A'isha Bint Abi Bakr."

But Ms. Spellberg wasn't a fan of Ms. Jones's book. On April 30, Shahed Amanullah, a guest lecturer in Ms. Spellberg's classes and the editor of a popular Muslim Web site, got a frantic call from her. "She was upset," Mr. Amanullah recalls. He says Ms. Spellberg told him the novel "made fun of Muslims and their history," and asked him to warn Muslims.

In an interview, Ms. Spellberg told me the novel is a "very ugly, stupid piece of work." The novel, for example, includes a scene on the night when Muhammad consummated his marriage with Aisha: "the pain of consummation soon melted away. Muhammad was so gentle. I hardly felt the scorpion's sting. To be in his arms, skin to skin, was the bliss I had longed for all my life." Says Ms. Spellberg: "I walked through a metal detector to see 'Last Temptation of Christ,'" the controversial 1980s film adaptation of a novel that depicted a relationship between Jesus and Mary Magdalene. "I don't have a problem with historical fiction. I do have a problem with the deliberate misinterpretation of history. You can't play with a sacred history and turn it into soft core pornography."

Of course, that's exactly what has been done to Christianity a number of times in books, film, and song. Ah but Christians aren't known for going around making bomb threats--at least outside the mind of Rosie O'Donnell. Put this down as yet another incident that gives lie to the ridiculous liberal phrase about how courageous they are about "speaking truth to power."

Be sure to read the whole thing.

Cowardly

A publishing company shows it's cowardly side and folds like a wet dish rag.  They can no longer be looked at as independent publisher, but as a tool of Islam.

Old, Retired and glad of it.

Another Slippery Slope.

The brave and cutting edge media become lily-livered cowards when confronted by islamafacists. What a surprise! Just like a bully who abuses the meek they will soon regain their self-respect by attacking some aspect of Christianity, safe against a theology based on peace and love.

How hypocritical of Spellberg

Apparently Mrs. Spellberg has no problems with historical fiction when Christianity is the topic, but has many problems when Islam is the topic. She went to see (and paid $$ to the producers) "The Last Temptation of Christ" in the movie theatre. A film 'adaptation' from a novel. Yet is part of the cabal that is attempting to stop the publication of a similar historical fiction novel about Islam. I guess this won't even get the chance to be adapted to film so that she can walk through another metal detector to see it.

The publisher does have a point though. THe peaceful followers of Mohammed would blow themselves up in their local markets and kill thousands of their fellow Muslims to 'protest' this book being published. Some of them might even burn all of the books in their local stores to 'make their point'. The muslim guards outside the local US Embasies would be high on the target lists of these peaceful zealots for having the temerity of being on duty at the time when they showed up to kill as many people as they could, in order to demonstrate how peaceful Islam can really be.

Oh, that's right, Catholics just grumble; they don't riot and behead people.

As far as I thought, Aisha was six (6) years old when she married Muhamed.  Probably nine (9) when it was consumated.  I hope you weren't puting yourself to self-censorship yourself when you said "less than 10 years old".

Just kidding.

Trash Christians. Why? Because they truly are a religion of peace. When was the last time a Christian strapped on a bomb and blew up dozens of innocents for his religion? Wait, wait, ... it'll come to me; just wait...

Write something the Muslims might object to. Noooooo, Noooo, run and hide. It's like all those Hollywood scripts that make reference to Hannibal (no, no, not Lecter, I'm talking about the one from way back when, or then again...). People pee down their leg and run away screaming. What a bunch of moral and phyiscal cowards. Publishers used to be bold. It sold books. Not now. Between their cowardice and the lawyers I guess those days are over.

What about publishing with Regnery? They started the conservative publishing industry. Perhaps they'd like to take this on.

They are such cowards when

They are such cowards when it comes to Islam and Muslims. But yet they get away with horrible things they write about Christianity.

NAMBLA Condemns Novel About Mohammed's Wife

By Anita Boytohugnkis WASHINGTON, Aug 6 (Reuters)

There seems to be another group condeming the novel written about Mohammed's favored wife, Aisha.

An attorney for NAMBLA stated, "This type of soft core child pornography is both unfair and misleading.  Everyone should be repulsed at the idea of an older man having sex with a young girl."

As usual, there was outrage from the Muslim communitry.  A representative from CAIR responded to this statement, "During Mohammed's time, there were no driver's licenses so there is no way to determine her age."

NAMBLA has been calling for the reinstatement for the Fairness Doctrine to address issues such as this one.

"All we are looking for is equal time for both sides," the attorney for NAMBLA requested, "If the raping of a young girl is allowed in a book, then the raping of a young boy must also be included!"

Quite the violent religion, isn't it?  Islam that is.

Religion of Peace (Not)

"Ah but Christians aren't known for going around making bomb threats--at least outside the mind of Rosie O'Donnell."

Here are a few facts and references I have found that shine some light on the so called "religion of peace":

The Truth about Islamic Crusades and Imperialism, By James Arlandson: "Historical facts say that Islam, including Muhammad, launched their own Crusades against Christianity long before the European Crusades. Westerners—even academics—accept the notion that the West alone was aggressive. It seems that Islam is always innocent and passive. It is difficult to uncover the source of this Western self—loathing. It is, however, a pathology that seems to strike Westerners more than other people around the globe. This anti—West pathology shows up in Westerners' hatred for the European Crusades in the Medieval Age Muslims seem to forget that they had their own, for several centuries before the Europeans launched theirs as a defense against the Islamic expansion. 638 Muslim Crusaders conquer and annex Jerusalem, taking it from the Byzantines. 639—642 Muslim Crusaders conquer Egypt. 641 Muslim Crusaders control Syria and Palestine. 644—650 Muslim Crusaders conquer Cyprus, Tripoli in North Africa, and establish Islamic rule in Iran, Afghanistan, and Sind. 710—713 Muslim Crusaders conquer the lower Indus Valley. 711—713 Muslim Crusaders conquer Spain and impose the kingdom of Andalus. This article recounts how Muslims today still grieve over their expulsion 700 years later. They seem to believe that the land belonged to them in the first place. 831 Muslim Crusaders capture Palermo, Italy; raids in Southern Italy 1050 Creation of Almoravid (Muslim Crusaders) movement in Mauretania; Almoravids (aka Murabitun) are coalition of western Saharan Berbers; followers of Islam, focusing on the Quran, the hadith, and Maliki law. 1075 Seljuks (Muslim Crusaders) capture Nicea (Iznik) and make it their capital in Anatolia 1086 Almoravids (Muslim Crusaders) (see 1050) send help to Andalus, Battle of Zallaca 1094 Byzantine emperor Alexius Comnenus I asks western Christendom for help against Seljuk invasions of his territory; Seljuks are Muslim Turkish family of eastern origins; see 970 1095 Pope Urban II preaches first Crusade; they capture Jerusalem in 1099

So it is only after all of the Islamic aggressive invasions that Western Christendom launches its first Crusades. It must be noted that Islamic expansion continues until well into the seventeenth century. For example, the Muslims Crusaders conquer Constantinople in 1453 and unsuccessfully besiege Vienna for the second time in 1683 (earlier in 1529). By the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the Islamic Crusades receded, due to Western resistance. Since that time until the present, Islamic civilization has not advanced very far.

Khalid al—Walid (d. 642), a bloodthirsty but superior commander of the Muslim armies at the time, also answers the question as to why the Muslims stormed out of Arabia...'I call you to God and to Islam. If you respond to the call, you are Muslims: You obtain the benefits they enjoy and take up the responsibilities they bear. If you refuse, then [you must pay] the jizyah. If you refuse the jizyah, I will bring against you tribes of people who are more eager for death than you are for life. We will fight you until God decides between us and you.'

When the Islamic Crusaders go out to conquer, carrying an Islamic banner inscribed in Arabic of the glory and the truth of their prophet, Ibn Khaldun would not deny that the army's mission, besides the material reasons of conquest, is to convert the inhabitants. Islam is a 'universalizing' religion, and if its converts enter its fold either by persuasion or force, then that is the nature of Islam. Moreover, Ibn Khaldun explains why a dynasty rarely establishes itself firmly in lands of many different tribes and groups. But it can be done after a long time and employing the following tactics, as seen in the Maghrib (N and NW Africa) from the beginning of Islam to Ibn Khaldun's own time: The first (Muslim) victory over them and the European Christians (in the Maghrib) was of no avail. They continued to rebel and apostatized time after time. The Muslims massacred many of them. After the Muslim religion had been established among them, they went on revolting and seceding, and they adopted dissident religious opinions many times. They remained disobedient and unmanageable . . . . Therefore, it has taken the Arabs a long time to establish their dynasty in the . . . Maghrib. (p. 131)

It is only natural that the Quran would be filled with references to jihad and qital, the latter word meaning only fighting, killing, warring, and slaughtering. Textual reality matches historical reality in the time of Muhammad. And after. But this means that the Church had to fight back or be swallowed up by an aggressive religion over the centuries. Thus, the Church did not go out and conquer in a mindless, bloodthirsty, and irrational way—though the Christian Crusades were far from perfect. Islam was the aggressor in its own Crusades, long before the Europeans responded with their own."

And, finally, getting back to the main point, i.e. that the publisher was afraid of what would result, here is how things have been handled for centruries by the "religion of peace":

"An unapologetic view of Islamic history reveals that forced conversions to Islam are not exceptional—they have been the norm, across three continents—Asia, Africa, and Europe—for over 13 centuries. Moreover, during jihad—even the jihad campaigns of the 20th century [i.e., the jihad genocide of the Armenians during World War I, the Moplah jihad in Southern India [1921], the jihad against the Assyrians of Iraq [early 1930s], the jihads against the Chinese of Indonesia and the Christian Ibo of southern Nigeria in the 1960s, and the jihad against the Christians and Animists of the southern Sudan from 1983 to 2001], the dubious concept (see Paret, above) of 'no compulsion' (Koran 2:256; which was cited with tragic irony during the Fox reporters 'confessional'! ) , has always been meaningless. A consistent practice was to enslave populations taken from outside the boundaries of the 'Dar al Islam', where Islamic rule (and Law) prevailed. Inevitably fresh non—Muslim slaves, including children (for example, the infamous devshirme system in Ottoman Turkey, which spanned three centuries and enslaved 500,000 to one million Balkan Christian adolescent males, forcibly converting them to Islam), were Islamized within a generation, their ethnic and linguistic origins erased."(from The Pope, Jihad, and 'Dialogue', By Andrew G. Bostom).

And, as for the "academic", Ms. Spellberg, the scene described in the novel is not near as graphic as some of the actual sacred writings describing relations between men and young girls, i.e. "Muhammad was betrothed to Aisha when she was six years old, and he consummated their union when she was only nine. The hadith says of her age: . . . [T]hen he [Muhammad] wrote the marriage (wedding) contract with Aishah when she was a girl of six years of age, and he consumed [sic, consummated] that marriage when she was nine years old...(Bukhari)"

..."The following hadith proves beyond doubt that Muhammad pursued Aisha when she was six years old. Abu Bakr was Muhammad's right—hand Companion and the father of little Aisha. The Prophet asked Abu Bakr for Aisha's hand in marriage. Abu Bakr said 'But I am your brother.' The Prophet said, 'You are my brother in Allah's religion and His Book, but she (Aisha) is lawful for me to marry.' (Bukhari) (from 'Plowing fields' and marrying little girls in the Quran, By James Arlandson)

This is not reading for the faint of heart or easily offended, especially if you go to the last article and follow out the links that I have not included (the author also offers the documentation of these sections of sacred texts as links with appropriate warnings to the readers sensibilities, rather than including all the text in his article).

What is going on here is not just the intimidation of one publisher.  It is a systematic, ongoing, never ending jihad.  We cannot ignore it.  In "The Face of Evil:...", in the words of the defector son of the most popular leader of Hamas:

"You Jews should be aware: You will never, but never have peace with Hamas. Islam, as the ideology that guides them, will not allow them to achieve a peace agreement with the Jews. They believe that tradition says that the Prophet Mohammed fought against the Jews and that therefore they must continue to fight them to the death."

Interviewer: Is that the justification for the suicide attacks?

"More than that. An entire society sanctifies death and the suicide terrorists. In Palestinian culture a suicide terrorist becomes a hero, a martyr. Sheikhs tell their students about the 'heroism of the shaheeds[suicide bombers].'"

Note that it is not a state but an entire society, and entire people that sanctifies exterminating Jews, and that the inspiration comes from their God. Find me the Muslim state or leader or organization who condemns Hamas or Hizabullah and their genocidal agendas or repudiates the saying of the prophet Mohammed that Muslims should kill Jews. Find me the progressive leftist who is uncomfortable supporting this call to the murder the Jews. We are facing an evil greater than Nazism and we are still referring to their religion as one "of peace" and describing their allies as "liberals" and "progressives."

To borrow a phrase (I don't know the origin), "We are all Jews now."

HK:  Thanks, but it's not much more than a huge cut and paste job.  I've saved a lot of the references I've read and just listed some of them with excerpts.  One of my pet peeves is that these guys get away with this "religion of peace" crap, and policy makers right up to the President just go along with the islamic party line that islam has been "hijacked by a minority of radical elements."

B f'ng S!

Begging forgiveness from the Pope and God for my language, here is what got Pope Benedict in trouble with muslims a while back:

"On September 12, 2006 at the University of Regensburg, Pope Benedict XVI delivered a lecture ('adding some allusions of the moment') entitled, 'Faith, Reason and the University'.

Despite his critique of modern reason, Benedict argued that he did not intend to promote a retrogression,

...back to the time before the Enlightenment and reject[ing] the insights of the modern age. The positive aspects of modernity are to be acknowledged unreservedly: We are all grateful for the marvelous possibilities that it has opened up for mankind and for the progress in humanity that has been granted to us. The scientific ethos, moreover, is the will to be obedient to the truth, and, as such, it embodies an attitude which reflects one of the basic tenets of Christianity.

Christianity, the Pope maintained, was indelibly linked to reason and he contrasted this view with those who believe in spreading their faith by the sword. Benedict developed this argument by recounting the late 14th century  'Dialogue Held With A Certain Persian, the Worthy Mouterizes, in Anakara of Galatia' between the Byzantine ruler Manuel II Paleologus, and a well—educated Muslim  interlocutor. The crux of this part of his presentation, was the following:

Violence is incompatible with the nature of God and the nature of the soul. 'God', he [the Byzantine ruler] says, 'is not pleased by blood — and not acting reasonably is contrary to God's nature. Faith is born of the soul, not the body. Whoever would lead someone to faith needs the ability to speak well and to reason properly, without violence and threats... To convince a reasonable soul, one does not need a strong arm, or weapons of any kind, or any other means of threatening a person with death'....

However, it is Benedict's discussion of the Byzantine ruler's allusions to  '...the theme of the jihad (holy war)'—Koran 2:256, 'There is no compulsion in religion', notwithstanding—that has unleashed a firestorm of condemnation and violence from Muslims across the world. Here are the words deemed so incendiary by both Muslim leaders, and the masses:

Without descending to details, such as the difference in treatment accorded to those who have the 'Book' and the 'infidels', he [Manuel II Paleologus] turns to his interlocutor somewhat brusquely with the central question on the relationship between religion and violence in general, in these words: 'Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.'

The historical context for these words—which were likely written by Manuel II Paleologus between 1391 and 1394—turns out be much more banal, albeit unknown to fulminating Muslims (here; here),
and Islamic apologists of all ilks, especially the disingenuous Muslim (
here; here) and hand—wringing non—Muslim promoters of empty 'civilizational dialogue'.

When Manuel II composed the Dialogue (which Pope Benedict excerpted), the Byzantine ruler was little more than a glorified dhimmi vassal of the Ottoman Sultan Bayezid, forced to accompany the latter on a campaign through Anatolia..." (my emphases)

This is nothing new.  They are like oversized, dangerous little children with big guns, and soon unfortunately, WMD's, running around having temper tantrums whenever something doesn't go their way.  People need to wake up.

For those of you interested,

here's the link to the Hussaini Youth page.

I noticed that the forum was down when I attempted to find this;

The next day, a blogger known as Shahid Pradhan posted Mr. Amanullah's
email on a Web site for Shiite Muslims -- "Hussaini Youth" -- under a
headline, "upcoming book, 'Jewel of Medina': A new attempt to slander
the Prophet of Islam." Two hours and 28 minutes after that, another
person by the name of Ali Hemani proposed a seven-point strategy to
ensure "the writer withdraws this book from the stores and apologise
all the muslims across the world."
(e.m.)

In the end, I think someone will publish it in the hopes it does become the "new" Satanic Verses. Rushdie's book sold 746,949 copies it's first year. I have no idea how many since then. Regardless, greed trumps fear (or concern for someones "safety") just about every time.

NAMBLA

The reason NAMBLA despises this book is that Mohammed (may feces and urine be upon him) preferred sex with a female child rather than nine year old male children ! If Aisha was nine year old Abu instead, it would be fine!

A more despicable, disgusting and immoral historical individual than Mohammed, including Caligula, Nero, Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Kim Jong-il, Dahmer, Bundy is imperceptable!
