Mark Steyn Cleared by 'Human Rights' Panel

Great news for free speech fans that likely won't get reported much of anywhere outside the rightosphere: the national Canadian "Human Rights" Commission has declined to prosecute a "hate speech" allegation against columnist and author Mark Steyn and the magazine Maclean's.

The allegation, brought against Steyn as part of an effort by the Canadian Islamic Congress (that country's resident apologists for radical Islam comparable to CAIR here) to use the government to censor critics of Islam. It was the second of three motions before three separate bodies to be dismissed; Steyn still awaits the decision of the British Columbia provincial commission.

The national commission did not announce the dismissal publicly so here's the Maclean's reaction:

Maclean's magazine is pleased that the Canadian Human Rights Commission has dismissed the complaint brought against it by the Canadian Islamic Congress. The decision is in keeping with our long-standing position that the article in question, "The Future Belongs to Islam," an excerpt from Mark Steyn's best-selling book America Alone, was a worthy piece of commentary on important geopolitical issues, entirely within the bounds of normal journalistic practice.

Though gratified by the decision, Maclean's continues to assert that no human rights commission, whether at the federal or provincial level, has the mandate or the expertise to monitor, inquire into, or assess the editorial decisions of the nation's media. And we continue to have grave concerns about a system of complaint and adjudication that allows a media outlet to be pursued in multiple jurisdictions on the same complaint, brought by the same complainants, subjecting it to costs of hundreds of thousands of dollars, to say nothing of the inconvenience. We enthusiastically support those parliamentarians who are calling for legislative review of the commissions with regard to speech issues.

Sadly those legislators do not presently include the ruling Conservative Party of Stephen Harper which has gone on the record as supporting the existence of the free-speech-threatening commissions.

The CHRC's decision was not about supporting free expression though, as Ezra Levant writes:

With an RCMP investigation, a Privacy Commission investigation and a pending Parliamentary investigation, they're already fighting a multi-front P.R. war, and losing badly. Not a day goes by when the CHRC isn't pummelled in the media. Holding a show trial of Maclean's and Steyn, like the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal did earlier this month, would be writing their own political death sentence.

So they blinked. Against everything in their DNA, they let Maclean's go. That's the first smart thing they've done; because the sooner they can get the public scrutiny to go away, the sooner they can go about prosecuting their less well-heeled targets, people who can't afford Canada's best lawyers and command the attention and affection of the country's literati.

That is the true danger of speech regulations. Those who can fight them often escape them. Most cannot, however. Stephen Harper needs to reverse course and put an end to such Orwellian institutions and claim the free speech mantle for conservatism.

Good news!

Of course, that could never happen here, right?

remind me to never go to

remind me to never go to Canada, for this is a true example of attempted state enforced censorship.  While it is good news this was dropped, why they even entertained the suits is problematic.

Yes, you are even more annoying than Blonde.  the EYE

My Mother went to Canada last year

with her sister after visiting Niagara Falls and said she couldn't get out of there fast enough with all of the Muslims and wierdos everywhere she looked.  She thought it was pretty scary...lol.

I wish I could write a political colum like Mark Steyn and write a country song like Billy Joe Shaver.  Then maybe I wouldn't be held down by "the man."

jeff- in friendly good humor - an image flashed through my mind when I read your heading:

"My Mother Went to Canada Last Year"

It was of Groucho with his big cigar and I was waiting for a funny punch line.

Like--"And she actually saw a Canadian there"..

Look, all we have to do is to grant the Muslims the ability to enforce their own laws over their own people. That will keep them happy and we will never have to worry about them,-- Right????

I was in the Portland Maine airport last July and almost every custodial person was female and wearing a headscarf and some , a veil. Yet, as with the Mexicans, we are to believe it is only a small number and ignore it.

My best bud and his wife left to visit Quebec this past Thursday. They will be there for a week. I look forward to his tales when he returns.

Misterbill, I have a friend here in Dallas

..the friendliest town in northern Mexico...who says he is going to attach tortillas to his car and drive north until someone asks him what they are...lol.  That is where he will move!

This torrent of foreigners is definately having an effect on our country.   I believe that we are less of an America than when I grew up.  I believe that the American culture is better than every other culture in the world.  But it will not be if our "leaders" allow us to be overrun by foreigners.  Just my two centavos worth!

Both sets of grandparents came here from another country---legally. They learned quickly to speak English (with an accent, but good),and to be assimilated. Their aim was simple--the opportunity to live American, be American.

They asked for no footbaths. Although there were creches at Christmas, it was because it is America, not because they asked for it.  They did not want a separate set of laws.

Never staying serious for too long--what about if your friend drove the Oscar Meyer wiener vehicle?? How far would he have to go???

PS Tortillas?? Are those the things the toreadors stick into the bulls to make them more angry??? I also thought Guacamole was the capital of Spain. In spite of that , we have 1/2  million IAs in GA.

That's good news for Steyn

That's good news for Steyn and free speech but unfortunately the BC Human Rights Tribunal has already moved on to its next victim-a standup comedian making lesbian jokes.

I am about 4/5 ths of the way through the paperback version of America Alone. It has updates at the beginning since the original version of the book came out.  I recommend the book.  He comes out hard against Socialism and Multiculturlism for having weakend Europe's will to defend itself against the advancement of Islam in Europe.  Due to low birthrates of the natives, and rapid immigration and high birthrates of the Muslim immigrants, Europe is becoming semi-Islamic and is not the Europe we have known in America.  Yet most people in America are unaware of what is happening.
The book is an eyeopener if you are not a regular reader of sites like Jihad Watch, Gates of Vienna, Little Green Footballs and Michelle Malkin.

Pat Buchanan said pretty much the same thing in "The Death of the West."

As Mark Steyn famously says in his book:

"The future belongs to the fecund and the confident. The Islamists are both."

These issues are here, now, mb...

These issues are here, now, mb and with the quality of our immigration enforcement, it's going to be difficult at best. I'm sure that Pelosi will do her best to see that the Fairness Doctrine is re-instituted even though it has nothing to do with fairness. When the time comes when we can no longer discuss issues or offer constructive criticisms, analysis, and dissent because all of these fall in the category of hate speech, that's it. We must not allow the creeping Islamic culture to gain a foothold here. Allowing our laws to be supplanted by Islamic law is not an option, despite what so many of the Left advocate. It is insanity. It would destroy us. Assimilate or terminate your visit.

These commisions have existed for over twenty years. A distracted people allowed an apparently innocuous idea to morph slowly into a speech and thought control system few right thinking persons would have forseen. I believe this is the first ruling against a complainant. Hopefully the commisions will be abolished. Several European countries have similar commisions and a few are looking at the damage they have caused to their liberties.

Here in the US we are embarking on the same jouney, again. The "Fairness Doctrine" is rearing it's ugly head, after Reagan buried it. If Obama wins the only salvation will be the courts. That is until a conservative member of the SCOTUS dies. At the same time our Civil Rights Commision will begin an expansion. Have you noticed how quiet they have been since Ms Berry was finally forced to give up her gavel? I thought US Marshalls would have to bodily remove her from the building! This is just one of the important stories the MSM have kept out of the public's awareness, and more of the same that the Republican party has failed to keep in the light of day. They must give the people a reason to vote for McCain and a Republican Congress. They need to paint an accurate picture of what this country will look like with a totally liberal court, Obama and Nancy's Congress. I'm afraid of the consequences that a period of control by these people may cause. It may seem a stretch, but Venezuela recently has entered such a period. The people may have finally realized the mistake of one party control of every government function. They have only the streets to bring a complaint to and who knows where that may lead. Chavez and Obama speak at the same audience. Both address the majority at the expense of the minority. Their support will disappear when the wealth of the minority has been disbursed and wasted by the majority. When that happens the idealogue has nothing left to give because the national wealth has been destroyed. And then, the people may have to take to the streets in this country, again.

A first?

"....the national Canadian "Human Rights" Commission has declined to prosecute a "hate speech" allegation against columnist and author Mark Steyn and the magazine Maclean's."

This is excellent news in light of the FACT that in the thirty year existence of the Canadian Human Rights Commision not a single person has ever won a case before ANY Canadian Human Rights Tribunal.

Which begs the question of what kind of "progressive" democracy boasts a 100% conviction rate -- for ANY offence?   Any of our lib readers care to offer an explanation?

Is that like the old "If he

Is that like the old "If he wasn't guilty the police wouldn't have arrested him"?

This is indeed wonderful news! However, I think, considering the other people who have been found guilty of quoting the Bible etc,. Mr. Steyn was very fortunate!

Bravo

Excellent news.  I enjoy Mr. Steyn's work and viewed his persecution in Canada as evidence of the uniqueness of our Constitution versus those of other countries.  Some people think there is nothing worth fighting and dying for.  They are the cowards.  Those of us who served, fought and died for the right of all of us to write words on a page truly understand what is at stake.

Rights of the group

In Canada, the rights of the group are prized over those of the individual.  That's a bit of a problem as you can see with this case.

A short question

If McCain is elected, and Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins go to Canada, can they be tried for hate speech, because of what they say?

Well, there could be exceptions to my opposition to these panels. It would be delicious if they were nabbed while attending a protest against the war or a generic Bush-hater.

Some wise words

Here is a shocking idea: Canada could do away with its human rights commissions.  When I first heard this story, I could not help but think to myself: “Canada has human rights commissions?”

I have since found the logic  (if you can call it that) behind them but still find their very existence odd.  But this IS Canada we are talking about…

I now leave all of you with some words from one of my favorite commentators:

Maclean’s and its columnists, especially of late, are an ornament to Canada’s civic space.  They should not have to defend themselves for doing what a good magazine does: start debate, express opinion, stir thought.  And most certainly, they should not have to abide the threatened censorship of Canada’s increasing interfering, state appointed, and paradoxically labeled ‘human rights commissions.’” – Rex Murphy, CBC’s The National, January 2008
