'Right-wing' Rupert Murdoch Heaps Praise on Barack Obama

Aside from President Bush, one of the left's favorite boogeymen is Rupert Murdoch, CEO of News Corporation, owner of the Fox television networks and myriad newspapers around the globe. Murdoch, as the story goes, is deliberately foisting a far-right ideology upon the world, intent upon making it to support his personal political agenda.

In order for that to be true, however, paranoid lefties have to ignore a lot of evidence that Murdoch's words and deeds are hardly those of a consistently conservative person. The media exec demonstrated that once again today by heaping praise upon "rock star" Barack Obama while heavily criticizing his Republican rival John McCain as ignorant about economics, "unpredicable," and having "a lot of problems."

"I want to meet Obama. I want to know is he going to walk the walk. Have you read his education policy, what it is? It's just great. [...] I just hope that he's as good as he promises."

Below is the full transcript of Murdoch's interview at the Wall Street Journal's "D" conference with his left-leaning Journal employees Kara Swisher and Walter Mossberg (watch video here):

KARA SWISHER: How do you look at the political scene right now? And not so much the Fox impact because I think that's sort of [unintelligible].

RUPERT MURDOCH: Well the Fox impact is--people laugh when I say it's fair and balanced. Well it does, it gives both sides which the others haven't done in the past.

SWISHER: Both sides?

WALT MOSSBERG: You really believe that? You really believe that it's totally neutral? [Audience laughter]

MURDOCH: Yes. [Cut]

MOSSBERG: We're going to have for the first time in a long time somebody who isn't a Bush or a Clinton, probably, as president. What's your assessment of the situation? You know--

MURDOCH: --I think you have two candidates, Obama and McCain [cut] I think you've got probably the making of a complete phenomenon in this country. Politicians and Washington are at an all-time low. They are despised by 80 percent of the public [audience applause], they're just sick to death.

And you've got a candidate who's putting himself--trying to put himself above it all and saying he's not the average politician. And he's become a rock star, it's fantastic. [Cut]

He has other problems. He may not carry Florida because Jewish people are suspicious of him and so are the Hispanics. So he's got problems there. But he'll probably win Ohio and who knows. If it's a close election, you can start adding different states and so on. And--he'll probably win. [Cut]

MOSSBERG: I mean assuming he doesn't screw up somehow, the tide is against the Republicans because they've been out of power [Democrats].

MURDOCH: Oh, absolutely. You've got the Obama phenomenon. You have got, undoubtedly, a recession, everybody getting hurt. The average American is really getting hurt financially and that all bodes well for him. [Cut]

SWISHER: What is the McCain issue from your perspective?

MURDOCH: He's been in Congress a long time and you've got to make a lot of--you've gotta make too many compromises. So what's he really stand for? He's a patriot, he's a friend of mine, he's a very decent guy but he's unpredictable. He's--

SWISHER: Yeah, we met him here last year.

MURDOCH: --He doesn't know very much about the economy. I think he has, and I say this sympathetically, I think he has a lot of problems.

SWISHER: Who are you backing?

MURDOCH: I'm not backing anyone. Personally?

SWISHER: Yeah.

MURDOCH: I don't know, I want to meet Obama. I want to know is he going to walk the walk. Have you read his education policy, what it is? It's just great. He's got to revolutionize--the education system in this country is a total disgrace. [Audience applause]

If we're going to compete with the rest of the world, we've got the rising China, India, Brazil--

MOSSBERG: Does he have to smash the teachers' unions to do that or does he just have to take them on?

MURDOCH: Look, he can pay them all he likes, double their salary, but they've got to do different things. He's got to take control of the curriculum, everything. There's a lot that's got to happen. [Cut]

MOSSBERG: Why is she [Hillary Clinton] still in it, in your opinion?

MURDOCH: Everybody, every one of her friends is saying 'for God's sake, get out.' Her husband is saying 'stay in there,' [unintelligible] is saying 'stay in there,' and she's not listening to anybody else. [Cut]

I think Obama would never, ever give her the number two spot. He doesn't want the Clintons around. He wants a break with the past.

MOSSBERG: You like that idea, that his notion of getting past--

MURDOCH: I'd like a complete break with the past. I do know that he's a highly intelligent man with a great record at Harvard as head of the--

MOSSBERG: Law review.

MURDOCH: Law review and so on. I just hope that he's as good as he promises.

MOSSBERG: Did you have anything to do with the New York Post endorsing him in the Democratic primary in New York state?

MURDOCH: Yeah.

MOSSBERG: Okay! [Mossberg and audience laugh]

Ok, I'll bite..

Does anyone know what's so great or different about Obama's education policy? Presumably, he wants to try to somehow outspend the Republicans just like Hillary and every other Democrat this time, right?? (I know, I'm asking this question as if the President should have anything whatsoever to do with education, which I don't believe, but since I'm in a bipartisan minority and Rupert clearly thinks I'm wrong, I need to ask...)

The tax & spend drug war looks racist in the real world.

Sarc

Duh, he's for "change"

If you want to know Obamas strategy on any thing it's so simple a lib could understand.."Change"

If you find yourself asking how Obama is going to make these changes then you're probably a racist.  Just think change.

I do not know how more

I do not know how more clear people on the left need their big bad enemy Murdoch/Fox to be. He is not a conservative or the boogeyman, he is in business to make $$$$$ you simpletons.

Btw...I have said numerous times on NBs to other posters during debates over time that Rupert is not a conservative, he is for gun control, he believes in Global Warming...and for the last time, Fox is not a conservative network....although it at least gives some semblance of fair and balanced compared to all the other networks, and they cannot stand that...as far as they are concerned the likes of CNN and msnbc are what they want, very few conservatives speaking at all...but lot's and lot's of RINOs are okay, which they try to portray as conservatives.

Excellent piece Matthew. Thank you.

Another liberal myth shot

Another liberal myth shot down.

Of course, when conservatives point out George Soros very real and avowed mission to foist far-left liberalism on the world we get slammed as being "paranoid."

I'm not so sure it was shot down

Isn't Fox the main network for the Denver Convention? He  needs to be kind from a business standpoint.

And just why did the quote slamming Olbermann get cut from this piece?

Rupert Murdoch on Olbermann: "I fired him...he was crazy"

He also played energy analyst, offering a solution to high gas prices:
Encourage oil drilling off the West coast. And for good measure, he
defended the lack of a liberal counterpart to Bill O'Reilly on Fox
News: He'd hire one if he could find a good one, he argued. What about
MSNBC's Keith Olbermann, who's now spending much of his time attacking
O'Reilly and Fox? "No. I fired him 5 years ago," when he was on
FoxSports: "He was crazy."

Hey Pam... Another very

Hey Pam...

Another very interesting tid-bit of information I never knew about Olbie.

Fits right in.

Thanks.

Rupert says:  He's got

Rupert says:

He's got to take control of the curriculum, everything.

What?  Emperor Obama?

But seriously, the teachers' Unions own the Democratic party.  So Barrack is going to be in for a big surprise if he actually tries to make a move on their turf.  They are just humoring him now because they prefer him over McCain.

Schools will improve when administrators are allowed to fire lousy teachers.  But the unions will never allow that to happen.  The permanent job security of tenure gives teachers free reign to just about whatever they want - good or bad.  And it means that incompetent, abusive, and burnt out teachers pile up in classrooms across the county like so much old wood only to be transferred to some other unsuspecting school when the harm of their presence becomes too obvious.

Breaking the code

"But seriously, the teachers' Unions own the Democratic party.  So Barrack is going to be in for a big surprise if he actually tries to make a move on their turf.  They are just humoring him now because they prefer him over McCain." -- Parker1227

Yep.  Both Obama and Clinton promise to end "No Child Left Behind," claiming that (a) it's an unfunded mandate, and (b) it forces teachers to "teach to the test" (??).

But since the standardized tests in NCLB are geared toward testing students to see if they are learning the appropriate academic skills for their grade level, there's no need to spend any more money.   And what does 'teach to the test' mean? If you're expected to be able to add and subtract, the test will measure that.

What these disingenuous candidates won't tell you is that they are really currying the favor of the teachers' unions at our childrens' expense, because NCLB is actually about measuring the effectiveness of schools and their staffs, with incompetent teachers to be removed from the classroom to prevent further harm to children.

Neither candidate offers details on what they are going to replace NCLB with.  Just the usual rhetoric about higher salaries for teachers and smaller class sizes (which increases the number of teachers required).

If you want to see this mentality taken to a disasterous conclusion, you need only look at the Washingtonm DC public school system, which the convicted felon Mayor Marion Barry used as a jobs program.  While the city had the second highest per-pupil spending in the nation and had one administrator for every two teachers, school buildings were condemned as fire hazards, crime inb the schools was rampant, truancy was over the top, and fewer than half of all the students ever graduated from high school.  And many of those that did graduate were functionally illiterate.

They had a strong teachers' union, though.

Parker........Obama code word

Obama code word........change = indoctrination.  What better way than to control the curriculum then they become good little comra.....oops students.

Let me take a page out of the playbook I've seen in action on here before:

Well _of course_ Murdoch is heaping praise on Obama, because he knows that Obama has no shot against McCain.

Ta-da!

Even if true

that's still not particularly conservative for him to be endorsing Obama is it?

Nor was hosting fund-raisers for Hillary Clinton. It's politically expedient, which is for Murdoch far more important than political ideology.

That's in stark contrast to left-wing media moguls like Pinch Sulzberger who always toe the ideological line and never get called for it by liberal journalists.

Damn you, Sheffield! You and

Damn you, Sheffield! You and your...good arguments!

I don't think Murdoch really cares what other people think his political persuasion is. But his tactics are a lot more savvy than Pinch. (As an aside, my mom, a lifetime NYT subscriber, has expressed dismay at the newspaper's quality as of late. That can't be good.)

The paper quality, or the

Thats what I was thinking!

I mean, Obama has more skeletons in his closet than the average mortuary. Why do you think Hillary is going to put her campaign on hold? Shes got dirt on him and wants to make sure that when she goes public with it, it has the greatest impact possible. The longer you go after having exposed your dirt, the less impact it has...see Rev. Wright.

So, yeah Rupert is just shoring up the Obama ticket so that its Obama and McCain.

Ask yourself: Do I want a good paying job, or do I want a government hand out. Its that simple!

I believe I read on Drudge

I believe I read on Drudge that Murdoch predicts a landslide victory for Obama.

Job "security" equals mediocrity

I've witnessed the same thing with unionized government employees.  Since no one can ever be fired (unless they are photographed actually murdering someone, and even then its about 50/50 that they keep their job), the concentration of nut cases, fools, cons and burn-outs just keeps getting thicker and thicker.

It is completely insane.  Yet unions are intransigent on the issue.

Follow the Money, Honey

The Leftists who hate Murdoch might be amazed to find out who he's made political donations to. Go to any of the websites that track such things, and you'll find that over the years, he's given cash to:

I don't what he really

I don't what he really thinks about Obama or Hillary but you'd have to wonder whether the DNC really cares if they win the presidentcy or not. It seems to me they are getting things done already through the courts and through other venues. They don't seem to be a bit concerned with winning the top office in November. This is just my personal observation and you can disagree. If they loose (the Dems) they will of course say "whoa is me" and whoa is the country and that bla bla bla they tend to do, while at the same time acheiving their goals anyway. I wish I was wrong about this, but I think I'm right.
