If you've always thought her music was hackneyed and dull now you may have another reason to dislike Alicia Keys: she's apparently a racist conspiracymonger:
There's another side to Alicia Keys: conspiracy theorist. The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter tells Blender magazine: "'Gangsta rap' was a ploy to convince black people to kill each other."[...]
Keys, 27, said she's read several Black Panther autobiographies and wears a gold AK-47 pendant around her neck "to symbolize strength, power and killing 'em dead," according to an interview in the magazine's May issue, on newsstands Tuesday.
Another of her theories: That the bicoastal feud between slain rappers Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G. was fueled "by the government and the media, to stop another great black leader from existing." [...]
Though she's known for her romantic tunes, she told Blender that she wants to write more political songs. If black leaders such as the late Black Panther Huey Newton "had the outlets our musicians have today, it'd be global. I have to figure out a way to do it myself," she said.
All this nonsense really should come as a surprise to Keys's mother, Teresa Augello, who is white. Is this just a phase? In any case, it's hard to see how a white entertainer or a religious-oriented entertainer making statements like this and it not doing significant harm to their career.

April 13, 2008 - 00:44 ET by reasonsjesterIt's that they are completely stupid about it. I mean, I love rock'n'roll from the 60s and early 70s, but when, oh when, will the hippie legacy die out so we can be "free at last"? Blacks trying to conjure up past abuses like slavery will really begin wearing thin as excuses for continuing lack of success "as a race" (as liberals wrongfully think of it) if Obama gets elected - or even gets the nomination. Furthermore, if the system is so rigged against blacks, Alicia, how come you can become a millionaire while selling ultimately forgettable songs?

Howard Stern pointed out a few years ago
April 12, 2008 - 18:42 ET by sam.i.amthat her ebonics level in her public speaking was directly proportional to the demographics of the audience. It was rather comical (illustrated with sound clips) that she could play to either part of her heritage--sounding white at a mainstream awards show, then sounding "hood" and keepin it real for black audiences. I guess it sounds more normal than Shrillary trying to pull it off, but the point is that she manipulates her diction in order to broaden her appeal and sell more records.
Therefore, not only are her statements paranoid, pathological, and puerile--they are hypocritical as well.
IIRC he noticed the same kind of speech-change with Oprah
April 13, 2008 - 08:33 ET by sarcasmoAnd again was able to illustrate with hilariously-different sound clips from Oprah talking to various audiences. The idea that Stern is 100% anti-conservative just because he happily punctured a few deserving conservative gasbags (examples on request) isn't just laughable, it's downright stupid-sounding to listeners who know that Howard (and Robin -- thank God for Robin Quivers!!) punctures left-wing gasbags with equal glee.

Notorious Fat Head
April 12, 2008 - 22:41 ET by badger.Talk about a BIG head, this girl has one! Alicia Keys struts around like the Queen of Sheba, more like Ms Queen Attitude. I'm so beautiful and pleasing to look at, just dripping in too much talent.
I recall seeing Queen Keys on the "Rock & Roll Hall of Fame" inductee show a few years back, she was demanding the audience show their love and pay homage to "Prince or is it the Artist Formerly Known as Prince", whatever! Nausea started to set in and I changed the TV channel, too much dribble for my taste. Sorry, forgive me, I just don't have the time to keep up with all the hip & cool aka name changes. Puff Daddy, aka Puff Diddy, P Diddy, Diddy, Daddy, and now just Sean "Puffy" Combs.
Conspiracy theories, are you kidding me? Keys' gives the government WAY too much credit, more than it deserves. This government, past and present, with all the resources availible, didn't have a clue about 911 coming, can't locate Osama Bin Laden, can't balance the budget, (trillions in debt), can't fix the border problem, refuses to mend the Social Security system, etc. etc. etc... I'm not talking about the Bush administration, I'm talking about the U.S. Government as a whole. Just too much bureaucracy.
"Gangsta rap was a ploy to convince black people to kill each other". Is she serious? Talk about out of touch with reality.(sounds like Obama) Has Alicia Keys ever heard of Africa? Darfur, Sudan, Solmolia, to name a few. Where black people are killing other black people in mass numbers over drugs, food, land, oil, religion, water, etc.... Talk about ignorance in worldly events, this girl is in a stupor. Queen Highness should step down from her throne for awhile and get educated on global affairs.
One other thing, the U.S. Government must have a really Big Master Plan in place, forcing millions of innocent unwitting people worldwide to spend millions of their dollars on this 'Gangsta rap'" aka music, perpetuating the killing of black people. Reminds me of in the movie "Manchurian Candidate", zombie robots all. This Government is amazing!
Great take
April 13, 2008 - 00:34 ET by reasonsjesterThe part where you effectively indict the government as being too dumb to walk and chew gum at the same time is so true. People DO give the U.S. government too much "street cred."

April 13, 2008 - 15:14 ET by vaboxrboyGranted she is a young artist, she has never shown anything but class and this whole notion of the black panthers and such is just crazy to say the least.
I am a fan of hers because she actually writes and plays her own music. She has also carried herself very well- most recently at the Grammys this year.
She's too young to really weigh in on the whole gansta rap thing, and there is no "street cred" to be gained by being assosciated with the panthers.
If the story is in fact true, it's unfortunate. But until I hear her say this nonsense with my own ears I will take it with a grain of salt.

racism paragons
April 13, 2008 - 07:51 ET by CatherwoodI happen to work in a place where there are at least ten black employees who espouse the same philosophy and this Keys woman (I have no idea who she is). I can tell you two things about these kinds of people: first, they never listen to anything anyone else says. It doesn't matter if you try and convince them with superior logic; it doesn't matter if you're provably right and they're provably wrong, they will stick to their manefesto no matter. When you try to rationallly discuss an issue with them, their defense mechanism is to talk over you or talk between themselves as you are speaking; they never listen. Two, they will immediately evoke anger and emotion in the face of realizations. If they see you are right and they are wrong, they immediately raise their voices and start shouting at you, especially when they are in a group. They will often point at you and swami their heads from side to side to make a point while their comrads say amen and you go girl. If your persist in denying their premises, they will always place the race card and say you think the way you do because you're racist.
I have concluded from my experiences with these people, most of whom are women, that I want to live as far away from them as possible. If worse came to worst, I don't think they would have any inhibitions at all about doing violence to any white person who disagrees with them. (By the way; all of these women except one have their jobs because they are black; they are completely incompetent and haven't the knowledge or education to fill their positions. They are simply catered to because they are black. Odd part is the ceo's know they are dragging the company down and will do nothing about it. Two of them were threatened with being fired but the action was dropped with they threatened to sue the company for discrimination; the ceo's backed down in two seconds.)
I know them well...
April 13, 2008 - 08:41 ET by unkeeafAs I read your comment, I thought about my previous job and the many blacks who acted just as you described. These people hate three things:
1) Whitey
2) America
3) Themselves
They are self-loathing, negative, unproductive takers who are sending this country to its demise. Just think, their vote counts the same as yours and mine.
Shameful.
You Go Girlfriend
April 16, 2008 - 04:40 ET by reasonsjesterMy wife's company has the same problem. There are some black women there who don't bathe, who fart publicly and without shame and who are loud and obnoxious and the management will not fire them! It's not about race it's about behavior. If white people did that there they would be fired. Why can't these black women be fired for doing the same thing? Why, that's discrimination! Well, maybe if the government would stop sheltering blacks as if they're children and let the bosses in the workplace decide who is hired and fired, then maybe there will be enough pressure to change the mass black culture - which is violent, me-obsessed, extremely materialistic, rude, vulgar, and in general, very harmful to blacks who should want to make a better life for themselves. I have a quick question. Chinese immigrants to this country in the 19th century were worked like utter dogs building railroads and doing other material labor and were openly discriminated against (see the Chinese Exclusion Act). And do we see any Chinese whining about needing the government to protect them from evil whites? NO. This is because they value education, hard-work, entrepreneurialism, and a strong interconnected community. What do we have in some black communities? Violence, drugs, vagrancy, disregard for education, ethos of victimization, defensiveness, lack of introspection, refusal to take responsibility, aggressiveness, etc. And many blacks, like Bill Cosby for example, would admit these problems. How are blacks on the whole going to make a change? Continuing government intervention? No. When government stops making blacks "victims" and blacks are able to see that the future is up to them, then we might see a change. By the way, any whiners about this article - I am Irish, so by the same logic of continuing white slaveowner "persecution" I should blame Englishmen for my shortcomings because of the Great Potato Famine. The fact that Obama is a preeminent candidate to run the entire country should give one pause about the real possibilities in American society and one's own imaginings of the barriers.
The object of life is not to be on the side of the majority, but to escape finding oneself in the ranks of the insane. - Marcus Aurelius
I'm just a round-the-way girl
April 13, 2008 - 11:29 ET by greenfairieThere's nothing more pathetic than someone who tries this hard to be "authentic." Miss Keys probably got a lot of stick from people for her pleasant tunes and her Caucasian heritage. She probably got called "Oreo" a lot. Her handlers probably told her she needed to "act more black." So now we get this foolishness. Anyone suffer through "Smokin' Aces?" She plays a violent, potty-mouthed quasi-lesbian assassin. Keepin' it real! The girl isn't wise enough to realize that when you are successful, people will try and tear you down out of envy, not because of something you lack. If Miss Keys decides she's going to be Huey Newton with a piano, she might win pats on the back from her critics, but her fans will start heading for the exits.
The same thing happened to Whitney Houston in the '80s. She was scorned for not being black enough (whatever that means). Her solution consisted of Bobby Brown, spouting Rev. Wright-ish rants, and taking up crack. Look where she is today, a hot mess.
That settles that

I have yet to read who is trying to discredit her. Some people here may not like her and even might think her music sucks but everybody knows that has nothing to do with her already achieved commercial success (in terms of dollars).
What appears to be at issue is yet another entertainer opening their trap about something they clearly know little about. That is the issue. And what it really appears she is doing, in fact, is pandering to a specific demographic in an effort to sell more records. Shrewd market penetration, gotta give a big thumbs up to marketing.
And to be clear, being white ain't hard. But apparently being a black millionaire is incredibly painful and difficult.
And lastly Leon, if Newsbusters is becoming an instigator and is "stirring the pot" or "stoking the fire" of racial indignation, then why not move on and leave us to our indignant fire stoking?

April 13, 2008 - 20:56 ET by BobAnthonyCould describe Alicia Keys and her statements...BLACK NAZI! I would say a couple of other words, but those two words in caps are the most MODEST I could come up with. If I have any of her albums, they get DESTROYED!
