February 26, 2008 - 23:45 ET by R D HelmIf you look carefully at what government "education" has done to this country over the last 40+ years, it isn't all that surprising, really. The government "educators" have been following a certain template to the letter. Not all at once, mind you, but gradually over time. Their efforts to turn us into a dependency society are beginning to pay off in a huge way. This election may just put them over the top. Permanently.
Roger posted this in today's ShrubReport. I saw it earlier this morning. It reinforces my considered belief that around half the people in this country are too stupid to live in a free society.

Hillary claims she negoiated national security issues while first victim. He claims individual accomplishments for his single vote in the senate to inflate a non-existent record. America, meet the drain
February 26, 2008 - 23:47 ET by candanceI really don't understand why so many people go on about smart, hardworking Americans who will come to their senses and vote for someone good.
I hold to my original assertion that 70% of the people in America are stupid. They would follow a billy goat off a cliff if he promised to punish the rich in the process.
Americans are bound and determined to throw their country down the drain and there is little conservatives can do about it.

February 27, 2008 - 00:35 ET by R D HelmWhat can one do?
LOL-Pray, cause that may be all we have left. No sh*t.
I share your frustration, as I have a very liberal friend, since childhood, who is a professor at UCSF. She even has her own lab that is named after her. She will most likely vote for Obama next November without so much as batting an eye.
Sadly, she believes voting for this guy will be helping the "less fortunate." Problem is, raising the taxes on the wealthy will only wind up hurting the "less fortunate" down the road. I have attempted to explain this many times, to no avail.
I'm the "black sheep" of my family, but I still benefited from GWB's tax cuts that, according to the libs, were only for the "rich." Obama's tax increase will not only hit me directly, but possibly impair my employment. I am in the Land Surveying business just north of Atlanta. The "Mortgage Crisis," which was largely created by the government wanting to "help the less fortunate" has practically put me out of business.
My younger brother is currently paying the mortgages on two $1 million houses. Obama's tax increase may not affect his employment right away, but it might very well impact those he hires to do whatever to his real estate holdings. Many of them may wind up out of work as other "wealthy" people cut back to pay their taxes. I wonder what Obama will be proposing to help them? Let me guess, why, a government jobs program!
I see the '70's returning in a big way.

February 27, 2008 - 07:38 ET by motherbeltI agree with your assessment of what happens when taxes get raised on the wealthy. Look what happened when they put that huge tax on luxury boats. The boat-building industry tanked and a lot of people lost jobs.
Liberals think that can apply taxes and penalties, and people won't change their behavior.

February 27, 2008 - 00:07 ET by candanceThink about life in the 70s before Reagan came in. Horrid economy, losing the Cold War, ridiculous taxes, etc. Reagan won the election by promising change, but fortunately for us he brought the right kind.
Most Americans are like teenagers following the current rock star who promises them the most goodies.
Now maybe it used to be different back in the day, I dunno, but I talk to a lot of people all over the country now and very few of them understand politics. Even fewer know basic American history.

No, I want him taking his share of the blame
February 27, 2008 - 01:58 ET by sarcasmoAnd that simply ain't gonna happen around here without my truth-injections. Face it, I've said NOTHING WHATSOEVER in this thread to let the Democrats slide, but Democrats -- especially the Tip O'Neill variety -- weren't the ones stealing libertarian rhetoric. Back then especially, they actually said they wanted bigger government, which was the truth. I tend to respect honest enemies more than dishonest "friends."
This issue is similar to why I respect Charles Schumer more than George W. Bush on the issue of Second Amendment freedoms, even as I totally-disagree with him. Schumer has always been consistently & honestly anti-gun. Bush has gotten gun owners' votes, while at the same time saying things like "I'd sign the AWB if it hit my desk!" Why this kind of trait deserves my respect, much less my vote, is beyond me. Many Republicans say over and over that they'd like to see smaller government. Far fewer of 'em actually vote that way, especially in primaries...
