GOP Debate 9:00 ET

Photo of Matthew Sheffield.

The Republican presidential candidates will be debating tonight in Florida. The event is hosted by MSNBC, click here to watch it online. Discuss the debate here or in the live chat.

Thankfully the Matthews-Olbermann moonbat brigade is not moderating tonight: Brian Williams and Tim Russert are.

Thanks for hosting

Our chat software has some bugs in it that I need to iron out. Irritating at times.

Good Evening, All

I hope you enjoy the scenery from the debate site & other locales...Carl Cameron was on the beach at sunset just a stone's throw from here, and I pass the FAU campus where the OWLs are in full display (interesting, on Chrissy's show there were no candidate signs, yes?).

And thanks for the chat, Matt...I missed the last few.

Hey Blondie

will you be joining us?

Supreme Court,  National Security,  Borders,  Fiscal Restraint, my litmus test for President.

You betcha, botg

I've missed you guys.

I see Oberloon is on the pre-game show.

David Gregory, do you know which damn network you lie for? ~ Uncle Jimbo, @Blackfive

Hi Blonde...

Glad they get to hang in your neck of the woods.

I'm so disgusted I probably won't bother watching. No sense in raising my blood pressure watching RINO's pander to the base.

Rush Limbaugh stated that of the top 5 Republicans running for the presidency, only one was a true conservative. http://www.fred08.com/

Well, Clear

Now that Fred's out...I have a decision to make.

Why don't you watch & join us on the chat.

Thank heavens the dems aren't campaigning here.

David Gregory, do you know which damn network you lie for? ~ Uncle Jimbo, @Blackfive

I'm gonna pass.   Talk

I'm gonna pass.

Talk to ya later!

Rush Limbaugh stated that of the top 5 Republicans running for the presidency, only one was a true conservative. http://www.fred08.com/

I've been watching it, and

I've been watching it, and those two pieces of Democrat  sh*t, Brian and Tim, are asking questions right out of the Democrat play book.  Bill and Hillary might as well be there asking the questions.  And on the most liberal channel that exists.

Any Republican candidate is more a hero that the Democrat cowards who refuse to debate on FOX.

Sonny... Could not agree

Sonny...

Could not agree more...

The question about the cost of our military's sacrifice was despicable.

The Way They Ask It Too

Particularly using bogus poll data to lead into a questions.

Timmy also used a bogus economic analysis comparing the most recent economic data - not the last 7 year average - to the Clinton best years.

He also used that to set up the Democrats for a general election issue.

They also tried framing Iraq as anti-war and not cut-and-run. I think Mitt and Rudy did a great job of cornering the Clinton tag-team on that one.

Sonny...I don't know about

Sonny...I don't know about the piece of sh*t part, but I was under the impression Brian Williams is a Republican.  I think--though I'm by no means certain--he has made some favorable comments about Rush Limbaugh.

I"ll try to find some documentation pointing one way or the other.  Do you have any?

Jer

Williams a

Williams a republican...surely you jest Jer.

I don't care what you find.

bigtimer...would a current

bigtimer...would a current voter registration card suffice?

Just kidding...I haven't found evidence of his party affiliation so far.  However, he did have some very nice things to say about Rush during a 2004 C-Span interview with Brian Lamb.  [I'll try to get a definitive link to that...so far, I've only read quoted portions of it.]

Whom do you think performed best in tonight's debate?  [I saw about half of it.]

Jer

Jer...you can search the

Jer...you can search the world over and Brian is no republican...I don't care what nice things he had to say to Lamb.

as far as who I thought did the best tonight was Mitt Romney...which I have already posted quite a bit in between normal life....his best line was this though and he had quite a few....

When Republicans act like Democrats....America Loses.

Thanks  bt...I hadn't seen

Thanks  bt...I hadn't seen your comment farther down the thread.  I agree...and I would vote for Romney, Guiliani or Huckabee over HRC or Edwards.

It's surprising how similar the criticisms are with respect to Williams and Russert over on the lefty sites after the Dem debates.  They believe both are shills for the GOP.

Jer

Glad to know which way you

Glad to know which way you are leaning here Jer...

As to your last thought there ...

You have got to be kidding...oh wait...sorry you said the leftist sites..it figures I guess, that is you have to force yourself to be really clueless.

Brian Williams-The Littlest Democret

Brian Williams-The Littlest Democret.

Russert & Willams The Littlest Democret 2000 moderator flashback.

mod...well I guess that

mod...well I guess that settles his party affiliation--a scrawled note to LBJ when The Littlest Democret was 7 years old.

He reveals later in the interview that he is a registered Independent.  I think that's credible.

BTW, the sentiments Williams expressed in the 1966 note were nothing compared to the praise he lavished on Limbaugh 38 years later.

Jer

P.S.  Did you read Letterman's Top Ten list about the Clintons near the end of your second link?  Hilarious.

Of course it settles it jer

He he, but come on isn't it soo cute? Reminds me of the notes my daughter would write for me. Yeah that top 10 is great, when hillary moved out was that to go to NY for her senate run? I wasn't paying attention at the time. But I enjoyed the russert/williams flashback didn't you?

Do you have a link for the c-span interview where he praises rush? I can search it tomorrow, it sounds interesting. Has williams ever "lavished praise" on rush during his network newscast? Come on jer I know you're intelligent, ask yourself; is brian williams really sympathetic to republicans? "independent" doesn't mean anything to me.

And your statement of "he has made some favorable comments about Rush Limbaugh." sounds just like "the nazis spoke about christianity and the church, so they were christians" :o Just kidding, actually it sounds more like Howard "he's quoted rush limbaugh" Kurtz. But I think we can both agree that there's more important things going on in the world than wondering about which tv newsperson is this or that. Each side sees it how they want. Heck I can go over to mediamatters and read about how chris "tweety" matthews is a gop shill also. This isn't a big deal.

btw-I haven't had a chance to look at the link you posted from last night, but I am going to try one last post in the "nazi" thread actually to TM because he did cough up one link finally and I will give it my thoughts. Even though he nor anyone else really addressed my original post of goebbels quotes.Quotes that were actually written while the war was going on. I won't get to it for a day or so though. Regards.

Brian Williams-The Littlest Democret

Arrrgh...mod.  I am have

Arrrgh...mod.  I am have trouble getting my post displayed.  But, I'll try again.  [I think the problem is from my end.]

I have not had an opportunity to do much digging for the actual C-span link of the 2004 Williams interview.  However , the following one apparently quotes the relevant language:

http://64.233.169.104/search?q=cache:wxE9tNkNUioJ:www.goodasyou.org/good_as_you/

The pertinent part is in one of the first comments posted [I believe by the site moderator] playing devil's advocate with those claiming Williams made homophobic remarks [this is a gay website] and is nothing but a right-wing Limbaugh lover.

However, no matter how you slice them, Williams statements are pretty favorable about Rush.

If you have any trouble with the link, let me know.  [I googled something like "Brian Williams fan of Rush Limbaugh" and it was the very first link.]

Regarding the Nazi/Christianity debate, I printed out the entire treatise, but except for my initial 20 min. "perusal", I haven't gotten back into it.  Hope to soon.

Later, Jer

mod...when I click on that link, it's not pulling it up.  If you have the same problem, google "Brian Williams fan of Limbaugh" and it is the very first link.

Romney's quip about Gen.

Romney's quip about Gen. Hillary Clinton was...

Priceless.

Rudy got a good one in too.

Economic Questions

I was a bit pissed that no one challenged Russert assertion about Democrats being "better" for the economy.

Someone should have said that 5.2% unemployment was still virtually full-employment.

The other garbage about a "budget surplus" should also be challenged head on.  The Gov't should NEVER have a surplus.

That 5.2% unemployment was a

That 5.2% unemployment was a buss sh*t comment from Tim, because he knows damn well it was 4.7% for years, and just recently jumped to 5.2.  I too am surprised no one challenged that question and the one about the cost in lives about the war.

Can't watch it anymore.

Agreed

People have short memories. If we recall, during the 2004 Bush-Kerry debates, they asked the same questions. Why are the numbers that track the economy worse now than they were in 2000?

Bush's answer: (a) we're in a war  (b) the post-Clinton recession and 9/11 set the economy back drastically. Normally in a war you raise taxes to pay for it, but because of the recession and 9/11, the economy couldn't afford a tax increase. So, Bush decided it was better to cut taxes and deal with the deficit.

To be blunt, everyone on that stage -- even Rudy! -- forgot about what 9/11 did, and the impact of the war. That's why the numbers haven't been better. We've gone through a hell of a lot more adversity.

That brings us to a talking point ... Suppose you had a neighbor who bragged about saving a whole ton of money. But then, one day, his car breaks down from lack of maintenance, his plumbing clogs for lack of cleaning, his roof leaks and eventually falls in. As he's standing in front of his wrecked house, he keeps bragging about how much money he saved. If you're like me, you'll shake your head and say, what were you saving all that money for???

  • Clinton built up a surplus, but he ignored things that desperately needed attention. He didn't do enough about terrorism, he didn't do enough about the power grid or energy system, his attempt at addressing healthcase was a disaster, etc. The Clintons compiled a huge surplus, but they compiled it by avoiding huge problems.
  • Every time Hillary brags about the surplus, someone should list all the things they avoided. Then that someone should ask: what were you saving all that money for?

KC, excellent reply.

You put it all in a nutshell.  Saved monies while the House went to hell!

Don't forget we got X number

Don't forget we got X number of illegals working off the books. Man if we could count them we might show -.0 unemployment!

Well..when it comes to

Well..when it comes to energy independence I see nobody wants to use that pesky little three letter word once again...

OIL...here on our shores.

Which touches every part of our economy in more ways than one.

The commie environmentalists

The commie environmentalists are shrewd people.   Stop oil exploration in the US, then bitch about the cost of oil.

It's like forcing every teenage girl to look, dress and act like a hooker, then bitch about the # of pregnancies, rapes, and herpes.

And of course, the masses just eat it up.  What morons they are.

World Economic Forum

During one of the breaks I changed channels and got The "World Economic Forum" and a dialog between Al Gore and Bono and just started laughing uncontrollably.

But a few days ago I read that they are predicting fewer and fewer hurricanes as a result of global warming. Are these the same people like RFK Jr. who predicted more and stronger hurricanes for 2 straight years as a result of global warming (which the opposite happened)?

Now think again about Al Gore and Bono have an intellectually stimulating discussion over the world's economy.

One day one of these mods

Needs to ask this simple question. To all the sitting senators. If you cant build a fence how are you going run a country? It isnt just about the fence. It is about the laws that have been passed and are ingnored or waterdown. They all talk security but nobody calls them on it when they dont implement it.They refuse to enforce the laws or bills they have past or were done by their predecessors.

Think "lobbyists."    What

Think "lobbyists."    What they want, as far as ALL politicians are concerned, trumps a few thousand Americans being killed each year.  You must look at the bigger picture - getting reelected.

You aint kidding

It is all about themselves and serving the "lobbyists" as you said.Which puts more money in their pockets. They need to bring caining to this country and apply it to all politicians not doing their job. There will be a long line.

Romney and Rudy did well

Romney and Rudy did well IMHO...Mitt did a lot better than normal he seems to be getting his sea legs with the msm more and more, which I am glad to see...and bringing up taking on Hillary later a few times was brilliant...plus he is learning to know how to burn up more time for him by playing into their questions while covering more and more that he wants to do ect...

I have a lot more I want to post about all of this but am just doing this on the sly now because my other half and I are discussing this too ect...

Later...

Btw...trying to embarrass Rudy with the NYT's endorsing McCain was absolutely beyond contempt.

Btw...trying to embarrass

Btw...trying to embarrass Rudy with the NYT's endorsing McCain was absolutely beyond contempt.

true, bt, that was a low blow. They also asked questions they didn't dare with the Democrats.

But the "was Iraq worth it" question was the absolute bottom in my book. How the hell do you answer that? Yes. Oh, so you think it was worh 4000 lives; would it be worth 5000?

Or, No, it was worth 2000 lives, but not 4000?

No democrat got asked about their opponents' criticism of them, HRC certainly didn't get asked how much money she had raised or spent....and on and on...

Exactly mb.... Plus the

Exactly mb....

Plus the answer that Mitt gave when they were trying to embarrass him about how much money he has spent and is he trying to buy all the Florida voters was absolutely maddening,,,

To cut to the chase, what he answered was priceless, but anyway when he said "I'm spending my own money I owe NO ONE....it was precious. "

Calling Hill out over and over was great too..audacious and Gen. Clinton was great ....

...and the polls numbers with Hill about when she was for the war and then against the war when they went down with Rudy...it was great...

Well, what did you expect

Well, what did you expect when two liberal Democrats are asking the questions.  And they rationalize it all with:  "Alls fair in love and war....and politics."  As though vicious reprehensible sleaze is OK with sub-humans called liberals.  God!  And too soon they will again occupy the White House and dominate Congress.   Woe are we.

Wait until you see how all of the new "hate crimes" are expanded  over the next few years.  "Malicious intent to denigrate" will become one interpretation of the ambiguous hate crimes, and then directed to anything a conservative says that they don't like being said.  And kiss conservative talk radio good buy.  Hello Cuba?

And all the time the masses will just whine, complain, and then go back to watching Friends, Oprah, and some sports game on TV while sucking on a beer.

You can fight city hall, but not the masses.

NY Times

That's like a badge of honor for Rudy.

Timmy and Bri also misrepresented the NY Times as "your hometown newspaper." Not in New York it ain't.

McCain should have asked the Times to reconsider because it will hurt his campaign.

GNY.... Did you hear

GNY....

Did you hear McCain's answer to Rudy about that...he was quick to gleefully cover his rear in the way you mean....anyway that is how I took it...

Typical for him.

..."When Republicans act

..."When Republicans act like Democrats....America loses."....

Mitt Romney tonight.

Oh Yay!

Someone finally told Chrissy how to pronounce "Boca Raton".

Que'lle idiot!

David Gregory, do you know which damn network you lie for? ~ Uncle Jimbo, @Blackfive

Just some general

Just some general observations.

I haven't watched NBC news (or MSNBC) is so long, I forgot just how pompous these folks are, with their little theme music, and Brian Wilson's stuffed shirt! Powerful music and a slick wardrobe doesn't give your network any gravitas!

I'll start with Mitt Romney. He really won the debate. He was on. Sounded Presidential, and even though he got some of the toughest questions he did well. The "General Hillary Clinton" remark was awesome. He basically called the dims arrogant for daring to take credit for the successes in Iraq.

Mike Huckabee is such a loser! The very first question thrown out there was about the economic stimulus Congress and the President were working on. It was asked if all agreed. Everyone else answered in the question well, and talked about how they would like to do even more! But not old P T Barnum Huckabee! Instead of giving the economy a shot of B-12, the Huckster wants the friggin' WPA brought back! My dad did some work with the WPA during the Great Depression, built a football field. But damn it, this isn't 1930. There are no soup lines here! But this nimrod wants to take $150 BILLION and build a highway! (it's not like there is no money for that!) The rest of the time, Gomer played the happy populist. A chicken in every pot! The man is in the wrong party!

Ron Paul. Wow, either he final took his meds, or mine were kickin' in! No yelling, no crazy old Ron! Paul actually made some very good points. He's wrong on the war though. Once he settles down, it's easy to tell he's a smart man. But I still would vote for him under any circumstance!

John McCain was lying his ass off! He ran away from his record. Everything he says is BS. He keeps asserting how he will do this or that, but the man's actions over the year show he's done the exact opposite. Then he and Huckster traded celebrities!

Rudy was on, just did a good job. Williams threw the NYTimes "non-endorsement" at him, and he wore it as a badge of honor! I like Romney, but frankly, I want Rudy to stay in the game.

The post game deal was pitiful! Chrissie was just rude at times. And they had every left wingnut out there doing the analysis. David Gregory was half in the bag! They had some gal from Air America on. Pathetic!

Chris kept introducing guests and saying "who I know quite well" sounded stupid and childish to me. But the coup de grace came when he was interviewing Romney's man. He kept asking over and over if Romney was smarter than Bush. Of course he was trying to say that chimp Bush is stupid! Romney's guy wouldn't bite.

All of the guys did well though, during the debate. No fire works, but it was interesting to watch our guys be grilled by the enemy and take it like the serious men they are.

I still think Romney won the debate though. I come away from this wishing the election was tomorrow! I origionaly was pulling for Giuliani, and tonight he reminded me why. It wouldn't hurt my feelings if he won. But I think Mitt Romney will be the one to place his hand on the Bible next January. He'll mop the floor with Hillary!

Gary, I need to adjust my

Gary,
I need to adjust my mental tuner, because you and I were on the same wavelength for part of the last evening!

1. Paul most definitely had been either told to try to at least look like you have some control of your bowels, or was heavily medicated. His usual band of idiot Paulbots were still there (Sarky included?), and deserved the stern talking-to Brian Williams gave them about applauding.

2. Romney did look presidetial, and answered some of the questions well. I, too, enjoyed the President Clinton remark, too.

3. Huckabee? Eh.

4. McCain? Well, he almost had me convinced. Then Global Warming came up, and POOF! all "happy thoughts" about him disappeared....

5. Ron Paul's question to McCain caught him off-guard. It seemed to be a small twig to hit McCain with, when there are so many big branches and logs to smack McCain around with. Just another example why Paul is not fit to be President.

6. Guiliani is done. I thought he had a chance, but seems to be missing something.

7. I thought the questions were tough, almost accusatory towards the candidates. It was almost as if those candidates were supposed to atone for the supposed "sins" of the current administration... Would Russert and Williams have asked the Democrat(ic) candidates similiarly-tough questions? I doubt it.

Yeah, Ron Paul threw me for

Yeah, Ron Paul threw me for a loop. I've know about this guy for a long time, and last night was the first time he actually made some sense, so something had to be up!

Honestly, I think he is very sincere about his agenda. He's a true believer. But some of his ideas are a bit liberterian for me. And his stance on not going to war, anytime, anywhere, is very troubling.

I think we've all figured out Romney is our only hope of getting anything even close to a conservative as our nominee. I just hope the one issue pro-life voters don't screw this up. I would love to end, or severely limit abortions too, but there are too many other things that are a priority. And if you really read what is going on, the younger generation is rejecting abortion more and more as an option. We can't let up, but it's obvious our message is getting out.

I know one thing, no way in the world should Huck or McCain be allowed to win the nomination. THAT would end the party.

Gary, I am asking you, one

Gary, I am asking you, one more time, QUIT STEALING MY BRAINWAVES!

haha

If Ron Paul wasn't such a blithering dolt when it comes to foreign policy, I would consider voting for him. But he turns me off, and his nutjob zealot hari-krishna-like followers make most people RUN AWAY from the guy.

I, too, wish that more people were NOT single-issue voters. There is not candidate out there who is 100% perfect (unless, of course, you are a Paulbot and gaze lovingly at your Lord and Savior)...

Global Warming bait used... McCain, Giuliani reeled in!

OMG, Russert asks "Global Warming" question with a straight face... in Florida!

If Global Warming were actually real and not a UN sponsored "Nigerian" money scam, Russert would literally be sitting in ocean water up to his 46" neck. And then McCain and Giuliani jump at the chance to tell us how they plan to "fix" it, HOW EMBARRASSING! Somebody on that stage with half a brain should have smacked Russert the moment he started to say: "Global..."(Smack!!).

Shame on you Tim (the sky is falling!) Russert.

Romney and Giuliani were

Romney and Giuliani were probably the strongest performers. They were kicking as$ left and right. Overall though, I think Romney won. Let's just hope Florida has it in them to not vote for McCain.

Sch.... I heard this

Sch....

I heard this morning on some network, I think msnbc that McCain is losing support from yesterdays polls, that Romney is on top now in Florida...I hope it stays that way too.

Hmm...we'll have to see,

Hmm...we'll have to see, then. I checked RCP about an hour ago and they still showed McCain on top in Florida. But maybe what you saw is more up-to-the-minute. Hopefully Romney will pull through.
