Republican Debate

Do you think ABC will give it more than 31 seconds or is that to much to ask?

Wow, this is repetitive

They need to quit invoking Ronald Reagan.

Yes sir. Someone needs to be

Yes sir. Someone needs to be their own man.

Fred nuked the Huckster

Huck made an OK defense of one of Fred's charges.  Huck is sending "I'm sorry" SOSs to the Bush conservatives whom he angered.

Nothing wrong with being a conservative Democrat - which is what Huck is.

But he's at the wrong debate.

Over all, a lot of fairly intelligent responses from all of the candidates (I don't count Paul as a candidate).

Rudy seems on his game - very bright on foreign affairs and the economy. Ditto Romney.  McCain is strong on Iraq and knowledgable on foreign affairs in general.

This idiot Ron Paul just

This idiot Ron Paul just brought up "Gulf Of Tonkin" when asked about the attempt to provoke action by Iran! This was after everyone else so far had said the Naval commanders acted correctly.

Romney had the right response to Paul when he said he was reading too many of Ahmadinejad's press releases! The Ron Paul supporters there got upset, but Mitt turned it around.

First Paul said he couldn't tell the truther's to stop, now this. Be glad when this guy goes away!

I know there are some Ron

I know there are some Ron Paul fans out there. The sad part is there are quite a few of his ideas that I agree with, but he comes across as such a nut case that he can’t get anywhere. The real question is if he is going to run as a third party.

Gulf Of Tonkin? Come on.. If the boats were larger I would think that Rosie was driving. (much larger) QE2.

The Gulf of Tonkin comment

The Gulf of Tonkin comment was priceless. It's sad that as a candidate, he resembles Rosie more than a Republican.

If you look at his site

If you look at his site there "some" things most of us would agree, but when he comes across as the tin foil hat guy.. you just want to scream. I would say if he goes 3 party that he will hurt the right more then left. (even if there are a lot of lefties in his fans.)

fred

I love Fred, but he say's "uhhhh" way too much!

Fred is a stud!

Wow!!! Fred welcome back! I love the Huckster Smackdown. The response was lame. I built roads? Come on. Other states do that without taxing bread.

I like Romney but get specific. Less platitudes. You sound like Huck when you are not specific.

Ron Paul supporters are over-represented...

...in the audience.  FOX should have screened out some of the Paul fanatics to create an audience somewhat representative of actual national support.  Paul has single digit support nationally but it sounds like his screamers make up about 20-30% of the audience.

I don't know if there are

I don't know if there are really more of them.  I think Ron Paul's supporters are mostly young people with underdeveloped critical thinking skills who like to yell very loud.

"insert name of conservative who stands up to the media" is all we really need. Fighting the libs is easy, its the msm that has become the enemy.

TEKI!

In the novel Shogun, by James Clavell, Captain Blackthorne had to rely upon the Jesuit priest to translate his message into Japanese so that Lord Toranaga would understand. Since Blackthorne's home country was at war with the priest's country, Blackthorne didn't trust the priest to correctly translate his message to Lord Toranaga. The priest told Blackthorne that he could inform Lord Toranaga that they were enemies by pointing at him and using the Japanese word for enemy - teki.

Republicans need to make sure that the American people know the mainstream media cannot be trusted to convey their message accurately.  Republicans need to point to the media and make sure that all Americans know they are TEKI!

Vote for "<insert name of conservative who stands up to the media>" for President in 2008.

Ron Paul is a genius!

Ron Paul is a genius! They're talking illegal immigration, and our great savior: Ron Paul says it's all Iraq's fault. All of our border guards are in Iraq! Just goes to show, you learn something every day <sarc>

Winners and Losers

This was a very good night for Fred Thompson.

Mitt Romney did OK.

Rudy was good.

McAmnisty had me screaming at the TV.

Ron Paul is undoubtedly the most annoying human being on earth. Listening to him, is like listening to Senator Clinton. I want to ram a sharp stick through my ear drums!

I had to donate to Fred's campaign tonight. He earned it!

I also hope for Mitt.

IF Mc Cain gets in I will sit it out. I don’t care if I cut my nose to spite my face. Mc Cain/ Feingold, his immigration bill, vote against tax cuts.  Maverick this.. You might be the darling of the MSM, but you will never be with us. We don’t forget.

Bush and Co. with immigration has killed the base for the Republican party.

I think that I am so dam mad at the RINOs that have put us in this mess.

Bush calling us racist because we don’t let the whole world take us over. Acting like we are idiots that we don’t notice that nothing has been done on the fence even after we call the switch boards and fax machines that they break down.

Mc Cain acts like none of us have any memories. He votes against tax cuts, writes bills to make our country a third world country.

I might calm down by November, but some times I start to think we need another Carter to get another Reagan.

The RNC sends me letters that ask me what is important. At the end they ask for money. The last one I taped a brick and wrote: build the dam fence and start with this! (I think I was taken off the mailing list)

I don’t know about any one else, but I’m tired of $hit sandwiches.

We don’t have a speck of leadership for the party.

Does the GOP shill for the DNC

In noticing the above comments, how did Ronald Reagan's revolution turn into a Ron Paul spouting HuffPo garbage and Huckabee being chained to tax hikes instead of finding ways to cut taxes.

I do not see how anyone in the GOP could vote for McCain and there is McCain in the lead, Huckatax in second and these bizarre Ron Paul anachists disrupting everything. I checked the Rense site and these loons are running around harrassing Sean Hannity and other broadcasters chasing them. Of course they hate Fox News to and they are the only broadcaster who actually is pro American.

Real bright there attacking the very people who actually promote the GOP.

I will vote for Fred Thompson in hoping somehow these RINO's and these odd Jeff Rense Ron Paul mobs start voting for Fred to keep him the race for the later states.

Not to worry. Romney still

Not to worry. Romney still has the lead in this. Once the real primary gets underway, you'll see Huck and Paul go away. They will not be a factor.

Romny, Thompson, and Rudy are the only real Republicans out there. As far as I'm concerned, Huch is running for the wrong party's nomination, and Ron Paul is suffering from dementia!

Fred did very, very well.

Fred did very, very well. Romney a close second.

Cool Arrow, jut curious, what have you got against Romney?

Not much really, Gary

It bothers me he gets a complete pass from this blog and the MSM on certain issues.

You don't have to go far in this blog to find "bible thumper" and "evangelical" used as pejoratives against Huckabee, but not a peep about Mitt Romney (an ordained bishop).

The MSM throws Christianity up in Huckabee's face regularly (as they did tonight", but not a word about Romney's merrily following along with his church's teaching until one day in 1978 when he pulled over to the side of the road and wept.

By age 31, (much younger actually) I had made a break with the religion of my childhood over what I believe was false teaching.  Pulling the car over and weeping deserves a little more explanation.

I ♣ My Seal

Well, I can see that and

Well, I can see that and agree with you. None of my business, but I guess you were once a Mormon yourself, from your answer. I don't know a whole lot about Mormons, they seem like good folks. Here in Texas, we would see them on their bicycles as the rode around town, going from door to door spreading their view of The Word. Always very clean cut, and well spoken.

I can relate to having a break with a religion. My mother was a Jehovah's Witness. A religion I consider a cult. I broke away from it very early on. Don't believe a thing they say or do. It was tough. Lost God for awhile. Thankfully, God never lost me! He looks after fools and babies. Doesn't take long to figure out which I am!

But here's why the media talks about Huckster in a different way. Huckabee talks more about his religion. He's highlighted it in many speeches. It's a big part of his presentation to America.

Mitt Romney rarely talks about the Mormons. When he talks of faith, it's more in the way George bush talks about his. It's very personal.

Now Mitt did give "The speech" down in College Station, very reminiscent of JFK. But that's been that.

Again, in my opinion, Huckabee gets more flak, if you will, about his religion, is because he brings it up continually. You'd think he was running for Pope or something.

I know I'm a bit biased, because I don't much care for Huckabee, and really like Romney.

GOP debate

I'm in general agreement with the consensus here, but Paul did have at least one noteworthy moment and response...toward the end of the debate when he was defending his Republican bona fides.

It actually was a fairly eloquent description of his philosophy:  strict constitutionalist, small government, low tax, laissez-faire economics, individual liberties, non-interventionist foreign policy...these were all pillars of conservative ideology for much of the 20th century.  In that sense, it was the other candidates who were mavericks...not he.

Jer

More Libertarian than

More Libertarian than Conservative.

The big deal with Ron Paul, is he is looking at the world through 1890-1939 eyes. Sure, it would be nice to roll yourself up in a ball, and hope the world leaves you alone. Ain't gonna happen.

Honestly, a lot of what Paul says, made sense 100 years ago. Times have changed in a very big way. The world has become very small. Everyone else has adapted, except Ron Paul.

He's a bit like Obama, to the kids. He's got a good spiel, but little else. Very empty suit.

We live in a very complicated world. We have terrorists that have sworn to bring down America, and other western nations. It's not our fault though. Ron Paul goes on and on about how it's America's fault. That disqualifies the man from being president. If he can't take America's side in the most important struggle of this Nation's history, then he should go back to delivering babies. I'm sure he was great at that.

Foreign entanglements

When Archduke Ferdinand was assassinated by a Serbian terrorist in 1913, it became painfully obvious how quickly sworn alliances can turn a skirmish into a world war.

Unless I'm wrong, we joined in the fight because it consumed Europe so quickly.  The Lusitania was an excuse since it was also laden with munitions for our "friends".

Then we allowed such punitive reparations after WWI that Germany was ripe for the monster who followed.

Far reaching alliances were our first dalliance in Mutually Assured Destruction.

I ♣ My Seal

You are right WWI was the

You are right WWI was the damnedest mess. It was all about old Europe and it's ways. And yes Hitler was somewhat spawned but the aftermath. Of course a world wide depression didn't help matters any on that front!

WWII was a different story. We had been attacked on our soil. It would have been like Clinton ignoring Al Qaeda after the first bombing at the WTC. Oh wait, that's what happened! And we see where that has led.

But back to WWII. We were attacked in a very unsporting way. As the Japanese were in Washington pursuing "peace" at the same time the Japanese Navy fliers were dropping bombs on Pearl Harbor. Germany then declared war on us. Hard not to go to war after all of that. The parallels between WWII, and what we have now are astounding. The only difference is war was declared against us, but for over a decade we did nothing about it. It took a second raid on the WTC, and a President with a backbone to take the fight to the terrorists! As far as allies. One has to stick up for ones friends.

You're right of course Gary

We could have continued to supply Japan with steel instead of the embargo in protest of their Eastern agression.  The embargo was a correct political move then as it is now.

And there can be no doubt our cowering after each successive attack during the Clinton era is unforgivable.  It's hard to argue that we are not at war if our enemy has declared it and has attacked repeatedly.

I ♣ My Seal

Gary [and Cool]...I agree

Gary [and Cool]...I agree with much of your historical analysis (except the German/Mexican collusion revealed by the Zimmerman telegram was a far greater preciptating factor in our WWI entry than the Lusitania sinking); but the charge that Clinton did nothing about terrorism for eight years except "cower" after every attack is simply absurd and, frankly, stands history on its head.

To state otherwise is not suggesting Clinton's anti-terrorism policies were beyond reproach--they weren't; or that Bush didn't react appropriately at the time of 9/11 or its aftermath--he did.  But Clinton did-albeit too slowly--recognize the gravity of the threat and took substantive actions; and, furthermore, like it or not, a solid case can be made that the alarm bells were being loudly sounded both from within and outside his administration during the 2000-2001 transition, but Bush slept through the class.

Jer

The problem with Clinton's

The problem with Clinton's responses were not that they didn't exist, but that he always tried to provide an equivalent response, i.e., you blow up one of our buildings, we blow up one of yours. To the Arab street, this made the terrorist groups appear to be as powerful as the United States. You had populaces thinking these groups would be wiped off the planet by the might of the US, and instead we blow up an aspiran factory. That must mean the US is afraid of these guys, so let's support them.

The weak responses from Bush Sr. and Clinton were what led to Al Queera getting the support they needed to stage 9/11.

Bru...except for some minor

Bru...except for some minor points, I think that is a fair assessment.

Jer

You had me on you're side

You had me on you're side until the "Bush slept through class" comment. Everyone knew Al Qaeda was for real. But from what I've read, "Al Qaeda determined to attack", was the only real intelligence that was getting to Bush, which I'm sure was met with a big "Duh!".

Truth is Jamie Gerelick, who effectively erected a wall making it impossible, and illegal, for The FBI and CIA to share intelligence, is very culpable in the 9/11 attacks. Which is why it was such an outrage for her to sit on the 9/11 Commission in the first place. Instead, she should have been forced to testify.

And we will NEVER know what Sandy Berger stuck in his socks! There is no way to have a complete picture of how well, or horribly the Clinton administration did it's job. Of course, if Clinton was on top of things, there wouldn't have been the need to steal classified documents. I mean we already knew he was a horn-dog, so THAT wasn't in the papers!

We can also take inference from the effort the Clinton team made trying to kill the ABC show, Path to 9/11, that something was wrong! I think they have successfully stopped it from being released on DVD.

Said all of that, to say this. The whole purpose of Gerelick's wall was the way the Clinton administration viewed the threat. Their whole theory was based on reactions to actions. It was merely a law enforcement issue to them. You know, like jaywalking.

Past that, what could have really been done to stop 9/11, other than carpet bomb every Muslim country on earth before hand? That would have not been the right action anyway. But there was no way in hell the ACLU was gonna allow "racial profiling" either!

So, here's the America took over. Clinton's group had tied the intelligence agencies' hands . The ACLU was writing law. Now in hindsight, Bush should have known to knock the wall down. But it's hard to just say he "slept through class" while briefings were given!

Gary...I'll try to

Gary...I'll try to elaborate more when I have time, but obviously "slept through class" was a quip...and a little hyperbole to illustrate a point.  I do believe the Bush administration failed to give the terrorism threat sufficient priority during the months leading up to 9/11, but we can revisit this later.  I respect your views on this and other foreign policy matters.

Jer

25 Days and Counting

Mike Huckabee C+, The Mike Huckabee Hypothesis -- From now until Feb 5, if you wanted to, you could watch nothing but Mike Huckabee interviews.

Fred Thompson A, Now I’ve said some negative things about Fred in the past, and I meant them. But Thompson was on fire last night, I can’t deny it… However he needs to win SC in order to justify moving forward, but to do that he has to take votes away from Huckabee and McCain. And he just might after last night’s performance.

Ron Paul D+, Highlights of the evening included being called on his pretentiousness by Britannica, and his disturbing new found fondness for the word “blowback.”

Mitt Romney C-, In politics, it’s not how you play the game, its how you win it. Two second place finishes would be a good showing for most candidates…unless of course everyone expected you to finish first. Getting booed isn’t helping his cause either. He’s been more or less demoted to second tier until further notice.

John McCain C-, McCain took a beating last night, in part because of his surge in SC. Even Ron Paul got in on it. His dismal night aside, he’s got major competition to deal with now. But don’t worry, he’s has a plan. He’ll woo that rare breed of Republican who supports climate change legislation. All 3 of them.

Rudy Giuliani A+, Prediction -- The Giuliani Strategy, scoffed at in the Liberal Media as absurd, will set a new precedent in how National front-runners campaign in the future.

Not so fast...

I have a similar but slightly different take. I agree with your Fred Comments. I don't think that Romney is as bad off as you claim. He is leading the delegate count. Its hard to call the delegate count leader as second tier.

The other problem in your critique of Romney was that the states he came in second allow independents to determine the outcome. In actual Republican primaries where Republicans actually pick the nominee (also in more conservative states) McCain with be left with much less support.

I think Huck did somewhat less than C+. He was slammed by Fred and had no comeback of substance. This was the second debate he took a total body blow. When Romney asked him 4 times if total taxes were raised by 500 Million or not Huck was left with nothing. Now with Fred's attack he was left explaining that he had great roads.

Rudy does not deserve an A+ in my opinion. He said very little wrong but wasn't especially good either. It was much of the same NY record and Reagan references. I think a B would be generous. I disagree as well with his strategy ultimately working out. He has to fight McCain and Huck for the "moderates" while Fred and Romney are out for the actual conservatives.
