From the birds-of-a-feather department comes news that former ABC "Nightline" host Ted Koppel is "hurting" for former CBS anchor Dan Rather.
The latter's ouster was a "travesty," Koppel said, on account of the fact that Rather's infamous National Guard story was "much more correct than incorrect." More:
“Dan Rather was squeezed out” with such little class from CBS News, Mr. Koppel said today at a forum at Fordham University in New York City that was put on by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
Story Continues Below Ad ↓The academy tonight presents its annual News and Documentary Emmys. During this evening’s ceremony, Mr. Koppel, the former ABC “Nightline” newscaster who now works for Discovery Communications, is scheduled to be honored with a Lifetime Achievement award from NATAS.
Mr. Koppel also spoke about the difficulties that network news departments face as parts of media conglomerates. Speaking of his former employer, he said, “ABC News is a pimple on the elephant’s behind”—the elephant being ABC parent Walt Disney Co.
Koppel also explained why he was, like Dan Rather, never been allowed to conduct an interview with George W. Bush since he became president:
When Mr. Bush was running for president, Mr. Koppel asked then Governor Bush what qualified him to be president. Mr. Bush cited his experience as governor of Texas, his experience running the Texas Rangers baseball team, as well as the fact that he was a loving husband and father.
Mr. Koppel replied that those qualifications would seem to be good qualifications if one were running for president of the Kiwanis Club, but not for president of the United States.
Ever since then it’s been the big freeze for Mr. Koppel from 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
Add this to the fact that both Koppel's "Nightline" and Rather's "60 Minutes II" were canceled right from under them and it's no wonder Koppel and Rather are such pals. Hat tip: "TE."

(Never mind that the story is irrelevant in the first place, but even if we stipulated that it was relevant…) If the documents were fakes, as they undoubtedly were, then the only basis for the assertion is Koppel’s pre-existing conviction. Koppel is telling us that he believed the accusation even if the proof was manufactured, which is logically the same as saying that proof was unnecessary. Koppel believed the accusation because it matched his prior beliefs.
In that case, why bother with evidence in the first place? If you believed the story at face value, why tell a story about it? Answer: because by making it into a story and pretending to have evidence, you hope to sway unsuspecting viewers who don’t share your conviction.
What shocked the mainstream media is that their manipulation was exposed for what it is - fraud.

That bothered me as well KC. Koppel is able to forgive one of the worst, if not the worst, "sins" a journalist/newsman can commit: lying/manufacturing a story.
If "much more correct than incorrect" is Koppel's yardstick for determining the overall veracity of a story and his personal seal of approval, then Koppel should be solidly behind President Bush, hurting for the president because he was "much more correct than incorrect" about the Middle East, North Korea, China, Europe and North America.
Chew on that Ted, you partisan hack.
