New York Gets Al Jazeera English

By Matthew Philbin | August 01, 2011 | 11:15

A  A

Look out MSNBC. The market for “vicious, inaccurate, and inexcusable” cable news just got more crowded in New York.

The New York Times reported August 1 that Al Jazeera English will begin appearing in New York for the first time, “subletting air space from a channel owner.” This marks a victory in AJE’s campaign to gain widespread access to the U.S. cable market. It’s also a victory for the network’s liberal media supporters, including several at the New York Times.

“Al Jazeera English was lauded by the United States government and even by a few competitors for its broadcasts from Egypt and other Middle Eastern countries earlier this year,” the Times noted. Yes, and it was called “balanced and thorough.” But as the Culture and Media Institute has reported, the praise was overblown and stemmed more from a decidedly non-journalistic admiration for the network’s activism than the quality of AJE’s reporting.

In fact, AJE willfully ignored the horrible sexual attack on CBS’ Lara Logan in Cairo’s Tahrir Square on Feb. 11. Nor did it report on the murder of a Jewish family (including toddler and infant) in an Israeli settlement the next month. AJE did report on related events that occurred later, portraying Palestinians as victims of the Israeli thirst for vengeance.

But it’s par for the course for a network that threw a birthday party for a child-murdering terrorist, whose Iraq War coverage was called “vicious, inaccurate, and inexcusable” by the U.S. Secretary of Defense, and who’s website after the killing of Osama bin Laden ran a long list of editorials suggesting the moral equivalence of the terrorist and his killers.

Al Jazeera English is little better than an anti-Western propaganda outlet. It says a lot about the debasement of our own “journalists” that they can call it “balanced and thorough.”

I don't understand. We already have NBC, ABC & CBS.

President Obama is a Muslim (from his own lips), Kenyan (read it from his publicist) a homosexual (read it on a news magazine cover) and a Socialist (I'm alive and can see it for myself)

Victory for Islam

Submitted by jon_torlin on Mon, 08/01/2011 - 11:44am.

So New York gets a victory mosque and now they got a channel to crow about it on.

Of course it was lauded by the US Government, THERE'S A MUSLIM IN THE WHITE HOUSE!!!!!!  I'd look for a Ramadan special on that channel with Bambi as a feature piece.

Sharia coming to a town near you

Submitted by Sefton on Mon, 08/01/2011 - 12:04pm.

Would anyone have guessed that, following 9-11, someone would be accurate in saying that soon there will be a celebratory mosque next to ground zero and Al Jazeera will establish residence in New York?
I used to be one of the people upset about the mosque. Now, I guess my attitude is that New Yorkers get what they deserve; congressional reps and senators included.
At least the folks with brains are clearing out - apparently New York state has the highest rate of exodus than any other state in the union. I'm guessing California is second.

tolerance gets you nowhere

Submitted by jon_torlin on Mon, 08/01/2011 - 12:15pm.

This is what tolerance gets you, especially ignorant tolerance, tolerating something you don't really have any clue about without doing the research yourself.  So you are correct that they are getting what they deserve despite repeated warnings.

The NY City Council had a lot to say about the victory mosque being allowed to take place.  What bothers me is that exodus as you mention it also solidifies the victory rather than take the fight and kick THEM out instead.

By not fighting, they gain a stronger foothold on our territory.

You gotta wait in line. Michigan is first. 1.5 mil. Since Barry Soetoro took over.
11.2 % unemployed.
There are empty houses on every street. And I live south of Detroit. 20 min. south.
On the way to and from work. I see at least 1 u-haul a day. On I-75, going south.

Idiots Walk Among Us

Submitted by JustAl on Mon, 08/01/2011 - 12:13pm.

My liberal sister in law went to Al Jazeera on the web exclusively for news about Iraq. . . while her son fought through three tours there. She chose to believe the propaganda of those who would cheer if her son was blown to bits, rather than risk reading something from a pro-American source. Of course, I'm sure she skipped any words with more than three syllables anyway.

This country is screwed. It

Submitted by ant on Mon, 08/01/2011 - 12:40pm.

This country is screwed. It is no longer ever really about differing 'opinions' via Dem/Repub, or whichever. It is about a firm anti-American idealogy, a refusal to listen, let alone, 'tolerate' common sense, the informed opinion of "right-wingers" is to be villified and shouted down with rants and idiotic slogans. In reality, as conservatives and Americans we are no longer involved in debates with other Americans with different ideas, we are in battle with maybe the most mentally-retarded political party that has ever existed.
To think, this in New York where 3,000 people were murdered by Aljazeera's fan-base. Disgusting, cowardly and stupid. Lord, save us from 'liberals'.

Submitted by ant on Mon, 08/01/2011 - 5:48pm.

What should have been a simple budget process blown way out of proportion, lied about, and demagogued was rescued by the very people that created the 'crisis'. Except, the cuts are miniscule in relation to the money the government that feels it must do everything must spend in order to do everything, plus will give Obama more money to borrow and spend (it's not cheap saving the world and fundamentally transforming your country and all.) Hip.hip, hooray! My heroes!
Kinda sucks though, looks like Mr. O'wishIhadthepowertodothingsmyselfBama, won't get to cut Social Security like he wanted or continue trying to scare people with this particular bogeyman.

Knock yourself out, chump,

Submitted by ant on Mon, 08/01/2011 - 2:26pm.

Knock yourself out, chump, and while you're at it, point to the part where I said, "this is the end of America". It's more like the end of the Demotard Party. Still, you've got Pelosi and the Dems "trying to save the planet as we know it!" so I guess there's still that hope and change. I guess fiscal responsibility on the part of the government is like Kryptonite to Superhero Pelosi and the Boy Blunder.
BTW, if Odumbo gets re-elected, you may need to shorten that 3-year time frame.

Maybe we should have let he NAZIs and the Japs...

Submitted by Dave. on Mon, 08/01/2011 - 6:15pm.

...set up radio networks in this country back in 1942.

Then you very possibly could be posting here in German or Japanese - depending on which end of the country you resided in.

You see, contrary to popular belief, this country came within the skin of its teeth of actually losing WWII. Thank God Hitler was stupid enough to try and swallow up the USSR. Had he instead decided to consolidate his holdings in the Med, this would be a very different world today.

Read history much?

The former Soviet Union collapsed literally overnight. What, exactly, makes us special?

The fact that we have managed to outlive the historical average life span (200 years) of free republics by a mere 35 years?

This country is now in total debt for over $128 Trillion +. Last time I checked, that was more money than God has.

In November of '08, this country shot itself in a femoral artery by electing a man who has spent more money than every president before him combined. What is worse, most of it was money we did not have to begin with.

If the so-called budget 'deal' somehow makes it through congress and gets signed into law, America will have shot itself in the other femoral artery.

And now there is even talk of yet another "stimulus" package coming in the fall that will be over half a trillion dollars that we do not have.

If the budget deal currently under consideration that contains no real cuts doesn't get us downgraded credit-wise, blowing $600 billion out of the Treasury will do it for sure.

Do you have even the foggiest clue what will happen to this country then?

Don't bother Googling Greece.

Google Zimbabwe.

Jon is right. You really don't 'get it,' do you?

-Dave

What does a cable tv subscription offer me?

Submitted by totsotvaitn on Mon, 08/01/2011 - 12:53pm.

1. Talking heads on every channel all regurgitating the same talking points 24/7.
2. Reality shows featuring stupid people doing stupid things.
3. Reruns of Perry Mason and Matlock
4. Shock jocks
5. Insane videos featuring insane songs with insane lyrics.
6. Round table discussions about nothing. I offer "The View" as an example.
7. Documentaries about prison life.
9. Documentaries about murderous people with gory details about the crime.
10. 20 commercials an hour.
11. PBS begging for money every two weeks
12. Being forced to pay a premium price for shows I never watch.
13. Democrats. Republicans and Independents in Washington proving that they don't know how to do their job.

I could go on and on about the slop we are offered on cable TV excluding the TCM channel, and have come to the conclusion that I am paying hundreds of dollars a year for one channel. I have canceled HBO, SHOWTIME and CINEMAX but still no relief from insane programming and now we are subject to Muslim cable TV news shows?
The answer to my own question is.......CANCEL CABLE TV and live.

you ain't kidding by half!

Submitted by jon_torlin on Mon, 08/01/2011 - 6:10pm.

What the hell, might as well get slightly(?) off topic here, I got a full time guy at work that watches the Spanish channels, claims he can understand Spanish(he might but....) even though he can't speak it(how the hell does he know to understand it??) and I'm constantly having to admonish him of watching the channels because the women(holy crap!) are wearing these outfits that ....what's the best word....accent their appearance and I don't mean accent in the sense of spoken language!  It's not a little distracting and I keep getting worried that some of the female customers that come in might find that a little questionable and make a complaint.

So, hotties, hell yeah!  And I groan to myself inside every time I have to pick up the remote to change the channel.  At least the women on Fox News look good even if they aren't dressed (ahem!) the same way.

Free Yourself

Submitted by stratman on Mon, 08/01/2011 - 5:41pm.

Been cable TV free for years. What isn't on free over-the-air broadcast TV can oftentimes be found on the internet as streaming by the channels themselves (albeit delayed and not from the "premium" movie channels).

The only channel I would like and don't get broadcast is FOX news, but I can see it streaming on the internets when I need to.

One other thing, libraries have movies and TV series on DVD to check out free. There are also digital books and music, some which can be downloaded. All of it can be searched and reserved from the comfort of your home. The library is an outstanding resource!

McCain praises Al Jazeera along with Hillary Clinton

Submitted by cbeyer on Mon, 08/01/2011 - 2:12pm.

I sent a link today (to NEWSBUSTERS) quoting RINO (now that he was reelected) praising Al Jazeera!! This along with the fact that he also (McCain) has been disparaging the TEA PARTY in the last couple weeks.

McCain veered to the right running for reelection to his senate seat in 2010 but somehow magically..with 5+ years remaining in his term has reemerged as a true RINO who is reaching out to the other side and of all things, President Obama.
